This lens is currently the most flexible zoom within the Canon STM range. I got it for the convenience of not having to carry my other lenses, not changing lenses at a critical time (also when windy and dusty), therefore always ready to take photos and videos. The lens auto focus is silent and fast. Videos can be shot without fear of motor noise heard on the sound track. The focus is fully electronic with no mechanic connection between the focus ring and the mechanism. The manual focus ring only works when the camera is turned on, and the lens set to manual. The lens has full time manual focus, so even in autofocus mode, manual override can be used with the shutter button half pressed. The lens has a zoom lock, but the lens is a bit stiff and detected no lens creep. I have another Canon lens (55-250mm non-STM) with a similar feel and it does not have a zoom lock switch. There is an earlier Canon 18-135mm lens that is not STM! That means does not have silent autofocus, no full time manual focus, only 6 blade aperture as opposed to 7 blade on the STM version. The non-STM version autofocus is slower and hunts more. The STM version has some minor performance upgrade and the lens can focus nearer than before, compared to the non-STM version. There are lots of lens reviews and comparisons on the web.Beware of sellers showing pictures of the wrong lens (STM) when they are selling the older non-STM version. If the price is right and you don't mind which version, then okay. Just check before you buy!It is similar, larger and heavier than the normal 18-55mm STM kit lens. The 18-55mm kit lens can focus closer than the 18-135mm. The 18-55mm weighs half the amount of the 18-135mm and it is noticeable. You have to balance the convenience of carrying that one lens over carrying second lens. The lens was a bargain and should have bought it as a kit, but forgot about it at the time. I bought the Canon EOS 700D with double battery, but even this purchase makes the overall price practically the same. You don't get extra battery with the 18-135 kit.A good all round lens for general photography with STM.Read full review...

I already had a 17-85 IS and a 28-135 IS so wasn't sure whether or not worth buying this lens but the extra length seemed a good idea although I never got on with the 18-200 IS as a piece of kit.I'd thought about a 15-85 to go with my 70-200 L-series but not a cheap option and so far I've rarely missed the wider settings; if I need wider I use the 10-22 which is made to do the job of course. It's mainly used with a 7D but occasionally on a 40D and whatever the pixel or file size I've noticed minimal issues with barrel distortion or corner abberation even at f3.5 and either zoom extreme. If compared to my 100mm f2.8 and blown up to silly size you can just catch a little difference in out and outsharpness but much less than I anticipated.Close focusing is mediocre but you don't buy a lens like this for macro work and you can't get a decent zoom with IS and Macro for this money so all said this is a very decent walkabout lens for a sensible outlay with a very good 4-stop IS system and without the problems of zoom creep and bulk like the 18-200.I am happy to recommend this lens for the moneyRead full review...

After using this lens for a week I can say that it is such a joy to use. I bought this lens after purchasing its little brother, the 40mm STM, a few weeks ago and I wanted a walkaround lens that I could use for wideangle and medium telephoto shots and video and to complement this with my 40mm for some creative shots. This lens is optically great with fast, absolutely silent autofocus on my 550D. THe build quality is superb and the next generation IS enables sharp, handheld shots at 200mm equiv. at 1/30th Second so it works well for me as I do a lot of low light photography at functions and so I was intitally worried about the 'fastness'of this lens but the IS sorts those issues out and modern DSLR's control noise so well at high ISO's that this isnt an issue for me.Optical quality is great at all focal lengths, the focal range not being as broad as a 'superzoom' lens is probably to thank for that.I will update this review when I have used it some more but I am seriously impressed by this lens from Canon and have already sold my excellent Tamron 18-50mm F2.8 to make room for it.Read full review...

I bought the Canon 18-135mm STM IS lens as a more "gun & run" lens. In other words, the zoom range has a lot going for it if you only want to be carrying minimal gear.I've used the STM IS lenses for some time now and cannot fault them. This lens is no exception. If anything, the build quality on the later STM lenses is a big improvement. It feels more solid. The STM focus on the 18-135mm is silent, as are all the STM models, a must for video recording, and, with my EOS 70D's dual pixel focusing system, it is lightning fast. This zoom lens also has a zoom lock which prevents creep of the zoom mechanism whilst carrying. However, even without the zoom lock switched "on", I have never experienced any "creep" at all.Another good sign of the build quality. Both the zoom and manual focus rings move very smoothly. The lens is not particularly heavy and the images, thus far, are pin sharp and crystal clear. All in all, this Canon 18-135mm f3.5 / 5.6 IS STM lens is a good all-rounder & I would highly recommend it.Read full review...

I haven't used it much yet, but pictures are certainly not disappointing. Image Stabilization is a definite positive and seems to make a difference. Focusing is completely silent and quick. It is quite a big lens, certainly when compared to my old 18-55mm kit lens and even my 28-300mm Sigma lens. I wanted to upgrade the kit lens for my Canon EOS-400D to something with a longer zoom whilst maintaining the same wide angle capability. This seemed like the perfect choice from the research I'd done and the price I wanted to pay. Beware of using the lens with a lens hood if you are going to use the built in flash, as the hood can block it and lead to an unwanted shadow at the bottom centre of your pictures.I learned this the hard way! I bought the lens from a Hong Kong based company and paid considerably less than I would have paid in the UK. The only down side was having to wait nearly a month for it. Fortunately, it arrived before I had need of it.Read full review...

I am just getting into photography and started out with the 18-55 lens which is a nice little lens but really has next to no zoom capability and for carrying round this can be a hassle as it means that to take photos of anything that is even slightly too far away, you either have to swap lens or crop it back later. Therefore I was really excited to have a lens that has the same capabilities of my 18-55 lens but with the advantage of being able to zoom in quite a decent way. It arrived and I was instantly impressed. The build quality is great and not too heavy (455g) and with a 67mm filter it looks pretty impressive too. Good IS and the image quality from what I have experienced is good.Definitely a great little (but not too little) lens, a great replacement for the canon 18-55 kit lens for photographers wanting a bit more versatility.Read full review...

Have been using this lens for around two months now in a variety of situations. First, the bad news. It's a little heavy. That really is all the bad news. Images are pin sharp, focusing is fast, colour reproduction is excellent. I use this as my only lens as it works perfectly under all lighting conditions - particularly good in low light. The zoom range is ample for almost all situations and the lens is fast enough to capture great action shots. Images can be cropped if necessary and suffer from very little loss of quality. All in all, a really good general purpose zoom lens offering excellent quality at competitive pricing levels. You won't need any other lens except for specialist requirements.recommend it very highly. I use it with my Canon 550D

Was surprised about negative reviews I read about this lens however took the plunge and went for it....The image quality is surprisingly good more than pleased was expecting a poorer image. Lens barreling is apparent at full zoom however wideangle distortion is minimal in fact not visable to naked eye especially taking family groups. Was surprised how well the image stability worked...got away with many low shutter speeds just by supporting myself against a wall. In short if you want 1 lens to cover 90% of your photgraphic needs this is it but if you are extremely picky about IQ then buy prime lenses instead at a price

This is a compromise lens for people like me who cannot afford L series glass. I use this on a Canon 40d body and my initial impressions are very positive. The Is function is reliable and I can hand hold at 1/15 reliabley. The lens mount is metal, but the plastic used to make the lens body is solid and seems robust. Most importantly, the glass seems very good. Sharp, well resolved images are very impressive. Lichen on a statue show great detail. I bought this on the strength of Ken Rockwells review and he is absolutely right. This is the only Canon lens I will use and it will stay on the body.

A bit larger and a lot heavier than the 18-55mm Canon kit lens that comes with most Canon cameras. But, the same aperture at the wide end and 135 gets you in a lot closer. I thought there would be a trade off in picture quality, but I would say the 18-135 is as sharp, if not sharper and produces better colour.Chromatic aberations are present around high contrast borders if you enlarge.I would take the 18-135 over the 18-55 for everyday use in spite of the extra weight and size.

What a smashing lens!! Giving from a wide angle to telephoto in a lens that is not too big or unwieldy unlike some of the 18-200 that can be bought. The pictures are crisp and colourful with good definition and although there is some barrel distortion at the wide end, it never became annoying. The only thing missing from this lens is a zoom lock, to stop the zoom extending as you are walking along, which makes the camera balance awkward.Other than this- a lovely lens.

3.9.2012

Purchased this lens to use as a regular walkabout lens for my Cannon 550D, that covers wide angle to reasonable telephoto.Well made, light in weight, small in size even at full extent.Stabilizer facility that really helps in low light conditions.Have not found any thing I don't like about this lens.Glad I bought it particularly as I paid in the region of 50% of new retail price.Ebay strikes again!!!

8.11.2015

Excellent lens for the money, has a nice weighty and quality feel. Fast focus and sharp. Obviously L lens snobs will pixel peep for flaws but for £228 its a bargain. I reckon this lens will be attached to my 70D most of the time.My other lenses:Canon 24mm F2.8 STMCanon 10-18mm STM F4.5-F5.6 (shame no metal mount)Canon 70-300mm F4-F5.6 IS USMCanon 400mm F4 L

3.9.2011

Excellent lens to replace the 18-55 and 55-250 which came with the camera, avoiding all that lens swapping and carrying. The 67mm diameter object lens allows more light in and the IS is excellent for low light situations. Super quality photos result - very pleased with my purchase, especially at Ebay prices!
