After reading some other reviews here about this train being more powerful I decided to get this one. To be honest, I'm happy i did. Not because it is very powerful at all, but if people are describing this as powerful i dred to think about the other ones. For someone who doesn't have any other trains, this ones just seems normal. It does the job and goes around the track pretty easily. There are two front lights and an unrealistic back light. There are 3 buttons and a switch. The front botton - makes a choo choo and then goes forward. The middle button - stops the trainThe back button - makes a different sound and makes the train go backThe Switch - switches the train off/on.When off you can use this as a push train, however if the tain is ON and your child constantly decides to push it, I believe this may damage it after a while as there is resistence there. The most important thing - the kid loves it!

Some of the reviews talk about the training using up battery power quickly - my experience is that it is no different to other battery powered trains. We have three different models and it is the same for all of them. Of kids play with them, then power will get used. Rechargeable batteries are a good idea! The trick this train has, that most of the other battery trains don't have is that the off-switch also frees the wheels - meaning that when not in use with the battery, your child can still push it along like a normal train. The other battery trains can't do this without damaging their motor. Worth it for this feature alone, never mind the noise and the lights.Highly recommended.

Bought this for my daughters extensive wooden railway collection - she can make some rather large looping tracks! Works well with some good sound effects and lights, not too annoying :) It is just about powerful to get up the bridges even pulling some carriages... Only downside is the power saving is quite aggressive so it manages half a lap of a large track and stops - then needs a nudge to get it going again. The feature of a little switch to make it freewheel is much needed as they get bored watching it go on its own and want to run it around the track by hand - so at this point you can release the power from the wheels so it is not broken by being forced around.

This was bought as a present for my 2 year old son. Whilst made of plastic, it is made to Brio's usual high standards. The three buttons (forward, stop, backward) on the top are easy for little fingers to use and the sounds and lights are good as well. On the underside is a little button which will cut off the motor when the train runs over a special "stop" track section. It's powerful enough to tow all 5 trucks that we have over the standard Brio bridges and faster than the other (bigjigs) electric engine that we have. I've already added the Big Green Locomotive (the same this in a different colour) to his wishlist for Christmas :).Highly recommended.

Mighty Red is a great little locomotive which can battle up hills with multiple carriages, traverse cross roads, turntables and generally difficut track, self righting as it goes. Rechargable batteries are a must, but this is a great little buy - so good that after my daughter was given one of her 3rd birthday, we gave one to my niece for christmas.Whatsmore it makes the train set so much more fun for the Mums and Dads. We now have competitions to see who can build the most challenging track for Red to cross; normally whilst my daughter sits in the middle somewhere dropping cattle and passengers on the line to see if Red can get past them!

we've just started building our brio railway set and this was one of the first trains we bought; having had a couple of other trains since then this one is the best for two year olds. it's very sturdy and takes a lot of abuse. forward back and stop and large chunky buttons, great for little fingers. there's also a free-wheel switch so they can push it along without forcing it. makes great choo choo noises and stops after 20 mins when your little ones have forgotten about it and gone off to play with something else! we've had other battery trains by brio but they don't match this one. a must-have.

The mighty red action loco has proved a great addition to my son's train set. It has added a new dimension. Previously the set consisted of push along trains - the addition of batteries has changed everything! In response to concerns in earlier reviews:I had no problems with the battery compartment, it's held in place with one screw and seems very secure. The engine is able to climb our bridges from the Tesco and Bigjig range (but only on it's own, not with carriages attached). We don't have any Brio bridges so can't comment on whether it makes it over or not.Overall a fun product.

This little train was purchased for my 2 year old's ikea train set, cos at nearly 8 months pregnant I was tired of getting down on the floor to help him push his wooden trains around the track. This is an amazing item, is v easy for him to operate on his own cos of the nice big buttons, it makes a great noise, and it turns itself off after 5 minutes, so even if he loses interest I know I don't have to bend down to stop it! The dog has had a little carry of it around in her mouth, the cats like to bat it off the track as it comes past and still it survives. Am v impressed.

This is my son's new favourite train. I also bought the car transporter carriage which matches this really well and have become my sons new favourite train. He is almost four, and it was his favourite Christmas present. I think we'll get lots of mileage from it yet.I read reviews about it being hard to change the batteries - well its a small train, small battery compartment. But its the same small screw driver that I use to change batteries in all my kids toys. It's just not a major problem but I can imagine tricky for some people.

We have had this toy for about 9 years and it is still running strong. It has been trodden on by parents and thrown in toddler rage and the only damage is that it no longer copes with bridges very well. The best feature by far is that it turns itself off after a while of not being touched, this saves the batteries which do last a lot longer than the other trains we have.My toddler loves seeing the lights coming through a tunnel and plays with it for hours and hours.I'm going to get it in another colour for Christmas.

Much better than the other battery-operated engine (that came with our first starter set). That had a fiddly switch at the top whereas this has simple big buttons for forward, reverse and stop (much better for our two year old!). It even has a switch to change into push-along mode and has little trouble coping with slopes and longer trains (unlike UK rail companies my daughter likes nothing better than to load on the carriages!). Be aware you'll need two (AAA) batteries but this just makes it stronger and last longer.

These engines runs on ordinary batteries which seem to go on for ever! They can pull a large number ofcarriages and negotiate the slopes up onto bridges. My 3year old grandson has had so much fun with his that we bought him another to complicate his routing and provide the opportunity for races off track!A thousand times better that the old mechanical toys and of course in a different world from his firstpush trains.I can thoroughly recommend these locos for for ages 3 to 73!!Brio 33223 mighty Red Action Loco

We recently bought this lovely little loco to make our grown up children's old Brio set exciting for grandchildren: already loved by 20 month old train fan, who, like her grandparents, is entranced by the sounds it makes and its lovely little lights. Practicalities: changing batteries definitely a job for adult with a screwdriver, so no danger to tinies. We're running it on rechargeable batteries which seem to be holding up well. The loco maintains the Brio 'feel' and is excellent value for money.

I think some of the other reviews said that this engine didn't pull much weight and used up its batteries very quickly. We haven't found either of those problems. It will happily pull 4-6 wagons and has no problem with little bridges and slopes. The buttons are easy to operate - my 3-yr-old got the hang of them very quickly. The only slightly fiddly thing is getting the battery in (you have to unscrew a screw inside the chimney) but once we'd cracked that it has been no problem.

My grandson loves this little engine, it runs well on rechargeable batteries (usually 2 or 3 days of play on one charge) & plods happily round the track (or across the floor on occasions) pulling several wagons. Standard throw away batteries only lasted about a day, so I would advise investing in rechargeable ones. It is not brilliant in reverse as it tends to slip when going up a slope.Other than that I would recommend it to anyone - a great addition to any wooden trainset!
