High RollerA wonderful sample of no fewer than 12 Gelocity pens were received for review courtesy of Vine and Bic.Some days, or so it seems, I must sign prescriptions by the thousand. For sure, there never seems to be an end to them and each time I venture into the office between surgeries and visits I see that the box, containing them, has filled again. Certainly we have at least a dozen laser printers churning them out all day long and it’s also true to say that tomorrow there will be more to sign than yesterday. As you might expect, prescription paper is tricky stuff. It’s bright green, has a finish on its surface and is ciphered for security reasons.It used to give off an irritating odour but this has diminished since they were introduced some years ago.We are encouraged to sign of course in indelible ink, usually black but blue is also permitted. I remember one of my colleagues having his bag stolen some years ago with a full prescription pad inside and the police asked him to sign in bright green for a month so that they could perhaps detect fraudulent ones coming through.These pens are perfect for the prescription slog. They have an attractive appearance with the nice white swirly line set against the blue body of the pen in two grades of plastic one, clear and the other more gel like so as to enhance the comfort in one’s hand.The gel ink flows without hesitation or complaint. It doesn’t skip run, bleed or smudge unless one is very quick and deliberately rubs the surface as soon as the ink has gone down whereupon, on some papers, one might witness a small amount of smudging but certainly not enough to void the prescription.More importantly still, the whole thing works beautifully and with minimum effort from the wielder. If one is signing perhaps one letter then of course this is an inconsequential attribute but try signing a thousand pages of prescriptions and I can assure you that you will notice the effort required.I must confess to really liking the Bic biro in fine in blue or black as this seems to just get on with it as I like to say. For this reason I was keen to try the Bic Gelocity and I can confirm that these are just as easy to use and also put down a slightly wider and hence more easily read ‘signature’ as one writes.I must also confess to being one of these obsessive people (I was going to use another word here!) who does things like write down gas and electricity readings and standing orders and things. I used to do this on a spreadsheet but I quite like using my nice Oxford Black n’ Red book so that I can refer to it at a moment’s notice. For this I like to use the Staedtler triplus fineliner which comes in a collection of colours though I tend to use just the black. The advantage of these is that they are very fine-tipped (0.3mm) and perfect for my manually entered rows of figures.Another excellent gel pen is the Pentel Energel with a tip of 0.7 mm like these Bic and I suspect the refills with them both are interchangeable.So, in conclusion an excellent gel pen that I am delighted with. It is perfect for high volume use unlike the Fineliner, I suspect, would not be suitable for signing prescriptions by the many hundreds.As an added bonus our two girls were home this weekend, one is a junior doctor and is working nights all this week and the other in IT has some tricky meetings this week. Both were looking miserable but brightened visibly when I offered each of them a couple of these to try – simple pleasures! So, next time you pick up your prescription take a look at the sweeping signature and wonder how many hundreds of others were in the same batch! Many thanks.

Duncurin has been running up these wonderful Gel-ocity quick dry gel pens from BiC. Of course the BiC company prowess with the sphere of the biro and writing implements generally knows no bounds.These are lovely tactile pens and they fit nicely and comfortably within the hand. I was fortunate to review some standard blue ones some months ago and this is a sample pack containing no fewer than 13 colours.Just as I found with the blue ones the gel ink goes down reliably and without hesitation nor blobbing, spluttering or untidiness that can obviously sometimes ruin hours of careful work. Colours are wonderful and I particularly liked the nuanced pastel shades which offer wonderful range and variety.Please note too that they go on reliably and are generally resistant to smudging. Please note if one is using high grade paper perhaps with a sheen or finished/glazed surface that is perhaps not as absorbent as ‘bog-standard’ paper then some smudging may occur as drying time is prolonged under such conditions. For the main aim of setting down one’s fact and figure on standard paper of no special quality then they work perfectly and exactly in the manner described.Colours are solid, even and reliable. They give an even colour rather than say a graded colour that one might wish to apply with art work. These pens are designed more for colour keyed drawing and also for lines of fact and figure where it is important not to get the colours or the legends confused. I tend to use them to keep my manual ledgers up to date – much preferring to sit with this on my knee rather than use a spreadhseet and I can then see at a glance how much my humble savings have lost and colour/highlight them accordingly! I also like them for diagrams to do with my various hobbies and I will attach a suitable one where these pens came into their own.The other point is that the ‘nib’ size is 0.7mm. This is perfect for most uses as it will apply solid lines of unequivocal colour quickly and easily. For those who need really fine work then a competing manufacturer offers similar ones with a nib size of 0.3 mm.Lastly, my two adult girls love the adult colouring books and for these we’d advise more pencil crayons so as to build more shaded nuanced colours rather than these gel markers. Bic's gel pens are such fluid writers they make writing by hand a joy. In their new condition they come with a tiny plastic sphere covering the nib. This protector has to be removed before you can write with the pens. It comes off easily - just use a fingernail to snap it off. I can imagine there are people wondering why their pens won't write, afraid to snap off this tiny sphere, thinking it part of the pen's nib mechanism. It isn't. Once that's off, the pens write beautifully from the first stroke on paper. The flow of ink gel is smooth and continuous, unlike ball-point biros. Make a point of retracting the nib when you're not using the pen - this stops the ink gel from drying out,thereby increasing the life of your pen. The pens are well designed in terms of outer material too: the contoured rubber is ergonomically perfect for gripping and has a non-slip quality (unlike plastic biros) which makes writing an altogether more pleasing experience. The A5 notebook is the classic style - plain white paper inside a hard outer case to which is attached an elastic strap for keeping the pad securely closed when you're not using it. Excellent design. The pens alone are worth the cost of the set, as they are fantastic. The notebook is a welcome bonus. If you do a lot of writing by hand, you can't go wrong with Bic gel pens.

Arguably a bit plasticky compared to other brands, they are nevertheless quality pens, with a smooth mechanism, comfortable grip and a functional shirt clip.The 0.7 mm points deliver a medium line, which is great for note taking. This pen set would make an excellent gift, either to a friend or relative or to yourself. What's to like about it? Just about everything:- The colours are bold and bright.- The pens are comfortable to hold - not too thin and with a rubberised coating that helps to stop them slipping in the hand. Their 0.7mm tip size is good for most writing purposes.- Each pen's tip is protected by a clear plastic covering, like a tiny ball. Before first use, you knock the ball off with a fingernail and the pen writes perfectly. There's no running-in needed.- If you store the pen upright or on its side it writes straight away. If you keep it tip uppermost it may take an inch or so's use before the ink starts flowing properly.- The ink is dry within five seconds.It'll still smudge quite a lot if you rub it immediately after writing, and a bit after three seconds, but after that it's perfectly dry and won't smear.The box and its liner are made of lightweight materials and aren't particularly solid, but they do an OK job of keeping the set together. If you don't need the box, Bic do an alternative pen set without one that represents better value. All the same, I'm happy to give these pens five stars.

OK, so for starters, the notebook is not lined, it’s plain. It’s also pretty basic with a thin cover that just has a half-fold outer leaf and a simple elasticated band. It is a bit misleading that the images on the Amazon product page shows a ring-bound notebook and mentioned in numerous places that it is ‘lined’, but I can assure you it is neither of those things.Once that’s out the way, you get two gel pens which are nice to write with, although I do have a couple of irks in that depending how low you hold your pen you might find the ridge where the rubber grip drops-off towards the nib a bit irritating, and the shirt clip position basically dictates the only way round that you can hold the pen,as you need to have the clip facing outwards so as not to foul your hand. Both points are fairly minor and might not affect everybody.Overall, two decent gel pens and a pad make for a decent set. It doesn’t present that well as it comes in a fairly flimsy outer, and BIC need to rework the Amazon product page as it is materially incorrect to infer that the notebook is lined when it isn’t.

These light, easy to use, vibrant coloured pens are very good indeed. As a left-hander, I often have problems with my hand smudging ink as I move across the page, but - as they claim - the gel ink is dry so quickly that there is literally no chance to smudge it. The range of ten colours provided are very pleasant (apart from the lime green!) and it's a handy set to have should you need to colour code any work, calendars or suchlike. My only issue with the set is the value for money issue - at the current Amazon price of £20, this works out at £2 per pen and, frankly, I probably wouldn't walk into a stationers and buy a single pen for that price.Although the environmentalist in me thinks that single use pens should probably be a lot more expensive than they are the moment to discourage the use of them, the fact that these gel pens are quite pricey means that if you compare them with the other rival brands on the market, they do seem rather expensive. It's a good quality product, though; I'm just not sure it's good enough to justify the cost, even with the metal presentation pack.

This set of gel colours from BIC are a great thing to have in your desk drawer for providing some interest to your note-taking or commentary. They come in a handy-yet-basic metal tin which shows them all off and you have to pick off the little plastic bobble that covers the nib before you first use them, but they have so far proved to be consistent and reliable performers.One thing I will say is that they are a fairly picky layout - in that you can only really hold them in one aspect, with the clip facing out and the two grooved finger grips on either side. As such you can just pick them up and write instantly, you do have to make adjustments to your grip to get it right before you start.The other thing is that the base of the rubbery grip area does drop off quite sharply, so if you tend to grip your pen quite close to the tip of the pen, you might find them a little bit inflexible.For a price of c. £20 (at time of review) that feels rather steep for 10 gel pens, but if you happen upon them at a good price and don’t mind the grip positioning, they are a decent offering.

This is a good quality set of 10 colourful Bic brand gel pens. They boast being quick dry, but don't seem to dry any quicker than most gel pens to be honest, so I think that is just a marketing ploy to make them more appealing. They have a standard size nib and are great for creative or artistic writing... ideal for a diary or poetry writer. They are not really suiatble for colouring to be honest, as they are more writing pens.They are very stylish in design and come in a tin... the tin has a see through plastic lid, so you can see all the colours, but I think it is a bit impractical as it is quite a large tin. I'd rather just put them in a pencil case to save space.I do think they are very expensive at just under £20...other reviewers seem to think they are good value at £2 a pen, but I think that is extortionate to be honest, as you can buy other brands of gel pens for a lot less these days. I'd still find them expensive at £10, but it would be more reasonable. I don't think they are good value at their current price at all, so I would shop around for better deals.

At first I thought I had a duff set of pens because every one I selected just wouldn't write. Then I discovered that each pen has a little blob of dried ink at the tip that needed to be plucked off before it would write.Then I found that they did live up to their description and were comfortable to hold and easy to write with having a smooth roller ball.These are conventional pens with a click action retractor and a shirt clip although I would be loathe to carry one in the pocket of my shirt with the risk of a very colourful leak. They are designed for writing not colouring.The colour selection is black, bright green, light green, bright blue, light blue, purple, mauve, pink,red and orange.The tin box is flimsy and not much good for anything else and if you want to remove the sticker from the transparent lid be prepared to use Sticky Stuff Remover but it won't come off cleanly.A great set for people like me who like writing different events in different colours on their calendar.

This is a good set of pens that have a good finish. I attach a picture my 8-year-old did with these pens of the world to try and show this.There are 10-coloured pens - black, light green, dark green, light blue, dark blue, pink, red, light purple, dark purple and orange. Maybe it is missing yellow but those 10 colours seem to have most bases covered. The pens have a non-slip grip and a push button top to get the pen out. They feel sturdy and look nice.They come in a nice presentation tin box. This means they look impressive as a set or as a gift and also perhaps give the child a bit more of a sense of ownership over them than if they were just in a cardboard box or plastic wallet.However I feel the packaging is a bit unnecessary and the pens maybe could have been in a more simple packet with a bit of a smaller price in consequence. But if my daughter looks after these pens because of the box then I take that back.

A nice writing set, good for a gift or for use. The A5 writing pad has covers which appear to be stiff card, laminated with a blue plastic, the stiff card would have been perfectly adequate. There is an elasticated band acting as a closure. The covers are keeping safe 100 pages of A5, white UNLINED, reasonable quality paper, despite the blurb stating it has 'black lines'.The pens are comfortable in use with a full length grip, no half measures here, the grip extends 10 cm along the 12 cm barrel and finishes just below the pocket grip, the end of the barrel terminates with a button for retraction or extension of the .07mm 'nib' which delivers the deep black or vivid blue quick drying ink which is in gel form.At just a penny short of £10,this feels on the expensive side, hence I feel with the unnecessary plastic, a lack of lines on the paper and the price, its very nice but it only gets 4 stars from me.

First impressions are a decent set of pens in a nice presentation tin. You get ten colours (black, two green, two blue, two purple, pink, red, orange) but no yellow. The tip size is 0.7 but they give a clean line and no sense of smear, which surprised me as I prefer to buy narrower tips in general.The ink flows well, the colours are solid and contrast well. I also never got a smudge or smear. No idea how long the ink would last but for the money (~£20) it seems like a reasonable investment. The pens feel solid though not expensive. I did worry the nib might wobble but so far, so good.If you look around you can get more of the same (it seems) pens for slightly less money, so the tin itself is pushing the price up.Experience tells me the tin won't survive and pens will scatted in various places before long, so if this is you, think again about this packaging. The pens themselves are fine though.

This was a nice surprise, a retro-packaged writing set, but with modern technology gel pens that are quick drying and a pleasure to use. The pens are described as being a medium nib, but to me, they were nearer fineliners. Not too fine, though, and perfect for handwriting.Unlike some gel pens, these are quick-drying, so are suitable for left-handers, whose fingers move across, and smudge their writing. They are slightly rubberised, and have a contoured barrel for a really comfortable grip. Ideal for any lengthy note-taking sessions.The notebook has unruled pages, so is useful for drawing as well as making notes. It's got inner folded covers, so can be used to bookmark pages. The paper isn't very thick ,but that also means this isn't a bulky notebook. The covers look plastic, but are in fact, heavyweight card.A nice gift for a student, to wish them well for the new academic year.

My pen of choice for journalling is a Uniball Signo DX (0.38). The only thing I don't like about them is that they have a cap and not a click mechanism - which has meant that on occasions I've been trying to get the ink off clothes or bedding.Although these have a thicker tip than I would choose at 0.7 they do write beautifully and I love the push-click mechanism. The colour selection is good - although I could have lived without the pink and orange ones.Any other Uniball Signo fans might want to know that the Purple in this set is very close to the Lavender Black in the UB range and the Turquoise is an almost exact match for the sky blue.They come tipped with one of those silicone-y sealersso that they don't leak in transit or dry out in storage so be sure to be prepared to remove it before first use.The metal tin is a nice touch if you plan to give them as a gift
