This is the dual core model in the new AM1 socket, which is designed to offer a cost effective solution, lower power consumption, and potential for small form factors.AM1 boards are available for around £20 and up making your basic board and CPU cost with this processor at under £50 which is good value. Due to the low TDP of just 25W, there is also potential for passive CPU cooling (subject to an oversized heat-sink and good case ventilation) You do get a small heat-sink and fan, the CPU is quite a cool one though so doesn't require a larger unitPerformance wise it scores around 1025 in passmark (a general benchmark for real world CPU tasks, which I find useful as a rough guide),roughly on a par with older CPU's like the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3400+, and Intel Core2 Duo T5670 1.80GHz, despite the slower 1.45GHz clock speed (newer technology can match the older processors performance with lower thermals and power consumption) The AMD APU Sempron 3850 Quad core scores around 1750 in passmark so it's a decent step up in raw CPU ability if you need it.That's good enough for day to day use, and with the on-board R3 graphics (128 cores @ 400 MHz) capable of playing back HD media files without stuttering, also a bit of light gaming is possible. Don't expect breakneck speed with this CPU, there are other quad core offerings available at a higher price if you want a bit more fire power. It's worth pointing out a modern budget desktop PC will have more processing performance, at a higher cost. The idea here is cheap, low power drain, small, and "good enough" for normal day to day tasks. Esp suited to a small compact media PCIf you are doing more intensive work, or want a gaming rig on a budget, then the AMD A series processors (FM2) are quite a good bet. Or look at the Athlon 5350 & 5150, both offer improved performance closer to a normal super budget desktop CPU.I've built a few of these for office pc's, and home pc's where high end performance isn't required. The range is quite limited at the moment, though I'm sure over time more boards and processor variations will turn up. This model supports DDR 3 1333 ramA decent processor, esp if you are updating from a dated single core desktop pc (like an older Pentium 4 for example) and require something basic but adequate, with minimal wallet impact.

I hate being the discording voice, but it must be said: the item is supposed to come with two safety grips which hold the CPU's fan to the motherboard. In my case, it came with only ONE. Yes, just ONE. According to the manual, there MUST BE TWO (2) of these pieces in order to install the fan. So, now my CPU is lifted from one side as I don't have anything to hold it with into the motherboard. And I ask myself, and the people who sold this to me, the following question: What am I suppose to do now? Press the lifted corner with my fingers? Or perhaps SPEND MORE MONEY IN ORDER TO BUY THAT SECURITY GRIP, IF I CAN EVEN FIND IT. Will you give me the gas money I need in order to go to God knows how many stores before I can purchase this missing piece. You know, the one YOU WHERE SUPPOSE TO SEND ME WITH THIS ORDER.UPDATE 30/3/2015After contacting customer support, I received an explendid service and help, which in the end solved my problem. Amazon Customer Service DOES work. I feel very happy and pleased with how they managed this situation, and also how fast they responded me. (It took only a day perhaps). Now, for the item. This APU is very quiet and fast for day to day PC usage: college projects, surfing the web... nothing drastic. Easy to install, (plug and play if you may); the instructions are clear and easy to follow. The price/quality ratio is about right. You get your money's worth. Aside form the inconvinience of the missing piece, so far I'd say that I highly recommend it.

If you want a cheap and I mean cheap new PC where all you do is surf the web, word process and a bit of media stuff, then this CPU may be for you. It ain't at all fast, but it is good enough to do the above. I have been testing it on an ASUS AM1 board (ITX) with 4Gbs of RAM 3 hard drives running Ubuntu 14.04... Not fast, but quick enough. I have been testing with file copying from NAS to NAS and it holds it own...Overall, for a basic new system this will do the job, cheaper than Intels offerings by a wide margin, low powered too.. Its OK!Update....Now tested it with windows 8.. It is quick with windows 8, updated it to 8.1 and there is no slow down. For a bargain dual core CPU doing the mundane taks of web surfing, word processing, NAS serving, looks as though this is going to hard to beat!

Good APU for basic Office/Home media, made a small home media PC with this APU and an Asus mATX motherboard with 4gb of Ram.. Runs Windows 7 64bit quite well, not as good as the Sempron 3850 quad core which is only a few pounds more. Plays HD 720p videos smoothly, but won't play 1080p videos. Good value for money though @ £21.99.

Cheap, works great with HTPC,I would have been mad if I bought a more expensive processor,it does the job, simples.

Processor does what it's supposed to do, run smoothly. Even clocked at 1.45 ghz it can still run many programs.
