I first played Vienna at the 2016 Games Expo in Birmingham and although it wasn't quite what I was looking for at the time, I remembered it as quite a clever dice game and eventually decided to buy it (so the sales pitch worked eventually!) The objective is to progress through Viennese society. Players take it in turns to place their dice at locations along the road corresponding with the number rolled, so the location and benefit you are looking for might be denied you. Have a Plan B! Strategic placement is key, both to secure an advantage for oneself and deny the opponent. Also, it is not usually possible to travel back up the street (the coach travels one way each turn).Advantages for holding certain locations along the way include adding an extra die to your rolls and adding people to your entourage in the form of character cards that further on score points in the form of symbolic set collection. Some locations cost money so there is also a financial balancing act involved between spending cash and allocating the dice to gain income. There is a handy scoring track around two sides of the board which will be a familiar concept to players of Ticket to Ride, Stone Age, Fresco and many other Euro-games.A nice touch is that the board is double sided for day and night and the artwork is lovely. Each side is otherwise identical. Place names are in the local language but this for me only adds to the flavour and the symbols are language independent. To summarise the game mechanics for gamers, Vienna involves a bit of worker (dice) placement and a bit of set collection and hand management. At first it might feel like a classier version of Yahtzee but it's much more than that. And with this type of game it doesn't matter at all that the theme is completely separate to dice rolling. Highly recommended.

Very re-playable, and a nice combination of strategy and tactics for a very reasonable price. And the artwork is rather nice too. It seems perfectly playable with 2 players, though it is advertised as being for 3-5 players. Although dice are used, the 'luck' element is minimal, as you can plan for poor dice throws by keeping a supply of coins for re-rolls. The theme is being successful in 19th Century Viennese High Society. The objective is to reach a winning total of victory points (stated as 25, though again no reason why you can't play to a higher number for a longer game) by getting yourself into the best places along Vienna's High Street before your opponent does on each round, while collecting special cards which you can use to change your fate or help you accumulate even more victory points. The game mechanic of using your dice (either singly or in pairs) to ensure your carriage stops at the most advantageous venues works well. Not a heavyweight strategy game, but not a lightweight one either.
