Fungi is an excellent 2-player card game. The theme revolves around collecting and cooking mushrooms. The artwork is simply fantastic - and for some of the mushrooms there is both a daytime version and a nighttime version. The game initially plays as a set collection game - taking turns collecting sets of the same type of mushroom from a common pool of cards into a basket. Collecting extra baskets allows for collecting more mushrooms. Then, with careful hand management, it becomes possible to "cook" sets of cards in a frying pan - gaining extra points by playing larger sets with butter and / or cider. Warning: if you like mushrooms cooked in butter, playing this game will make you hungry! There are some lovely twists to the game play, such as the occurrence of poisonous mushrooms and the extra value nighttime versions of the mushrooms. In addition, it is possible to sell mushrooms for "sticks" that can then be spent to allow a player greater choice when picking mushrooms from the forest floor. All in all a great 2-player set collecting game that plays in under half an hour and is very transportable (c. 100 playing cards). The theme is excellent and the game mechanics really work with the theme. Why not 5 stars? Well, the cards have the mushroom's name in Latin but the rules use the common name! This very minor issue is also slightly off-putting for the kids who have no idea why the Latin names are "so complicated". Still, they got over that after a few games by simply matching cards to sets based on artwork alone.

This is a great card game that travels well and doesn't need a huge area to play. Set up takes a couple of minutes and depending on the order the cards play out , game time takes 15-30mins. Some times it flows and seems like a series of simple choices with a bit of stratagy , others games every descision feels like it could be a win or lose choice. But all games require thought, there is a lil luck but by and large you feel like its your good or bad play that will determin the out come. What makes this game different is that you get to see at least 8 of the cards that are in play that you or your opponent could pick up on thier go , and your decisions in the action phase effect what they with have to choose from in thier next couple of goes, and conversely they do to. Its a balance between what benefits you and what might benefit them and is it the risk / reward worth it. There is a great balance of collecting, building, and interaction, do you hold out for a bigger score, do you score low but often do you sabotage thier game! All rolled up in some of the most beautiful artwork and theming printed on good quality cards.Once you have learned it and how to play , it really only takes 5 mins to teach someone else.Simple ideas, lots of decisions per game, its not perfect but few games are.Alsoif you like 2 player card games that take a bit of planning and have good theming look out for Trambahn.

I’m not a lover of cards games, and so being a games collector (now having more than 700 in my collection!) for once, did not really purchase this intending to play, but for the beautiful artwork, and theme; I LOVE anything to do with mushrooms or toadstools. An unusual theme this for a game anyway, but having had it several months, decided impulsively to just have a go at reading the rules the other day and having a go at playing - am I glad that I did! This has turned out to be one of the very best card games we can remember playing! At first, one can be forgiven for thinking the rules are very complicated – and there a lot of things to remember, however, they do supply cards so players at a glance can see what choice they have on their turn, as there are no less than five different actions they may perform – but only one of them, and even if it is to their disadvantage to so!As always in these types of games; it can seem a little pricey for what is really a pack of cards (no other playing pieces at all) but do not let this put you off, as this will grow on you! (no pun intended!)We love it, and since starting to play, have found it rather addictive, and have played so far each day since! Having so many games in my collection to play, this is a first for us!Great game that is also educational.

English / German game. Mushroom cards have the Latin names of the mushrooms on. English and German rules included in the box. This is exactly the same game as "Morels" just "Fungi" is a different name plus newer artwork. The "sticks" and the "pans" are represented in Fungi as playing cards whereas in Morels they are tokens.. However they have exactly the same quantity and actions. To be honest Fungi is better in my opinion because there are no fiddly pieces to loose if you take it on holiday or traveling ect. This is an excellent 2 player game. On first inspection you might think its mind boggling however its extremely simple. The rule make sense however I found a fab YouTube vid called "Morels"by Solo Mclaughin which explains it simply plus does a play through of the game. Once I watched the vid, it was obvious at what a simple game this actually is. Basically you collect cards of a certain variety of mushrooms. You can pick up other ingredients for bonus points. You then fry in a pan to collect the points. Very simple once you start playing. Very addictive Game. Stunning artwork on the cards. One of mine and my husbands top games. Worth buying.

Game info: You and your opponent are walking through the forest collecting mushrooms. You can only hold 8 at a time, unless you get lucky and find a basket and increase your capacity by 2 (or unlucky and find a poisonous mushroom that forces you to lose half of your mushroom capacity for one round). Once you have at least 3 mushrooms of the same kind, you can cook them up in your frying pan (if you have one) to earn points. If you have 4 or more of the same kind, you can add butter for more points. Five or more and you can add cider for even more points. Once you reach the end of the forest, you add up all of your points and whoever has the most is the winner.

I had a chance to buy this for my girlfriend at the recent UK Games Expo. It's a really delightful little two player strategy game with some beautiful artwork depicting various forest scenes. We both love it.There is a pool of eight cards in the middle of the table that represents deep forest, and there is a card showing a pair of feet on a forest floor. This card is laid horizontally in front of the first two cards of the pool, this represents what mushrooms you can immediately find. Then you can acquire 'stick' cards to spend in order to get to the cards further down the line, ergo finding rarer mushrooms in deep forest.Highly recommended!

Fungi is a wonderful two-player game! The premise sounds a little odd, but is completely engaging once you start playing. There's a nice amount of strategy (you do need to plan ahead!) and not too much luck involved (beyond the order of the card pile), but the game itself is quite short (about half an hour) and compact and is easy to play while travelling. The artwork is completely striking and the attention to detail is amazing (the night cards have, for example, little night animals nibbling the mushrooms). It's easy to learn and fun to play, though I recommend using the alternative forest path layout recommended in the instructions!

It can be hard to find 2 player games which are fun, easy to play, quick to set up and have a lot of replay value. Fungi completely nails it. (I played the US version, Morels)It's a light strategy game where you "forage" for and cook mushrooms, while avoiding the poisonous ones. The mechanics are super simple and the limitations placed on some of your actions - such as limits to how many cards you can hold - make the decision processes tricky. All this leads to really top replayability. After buying it myself, I've bought a few copies for other gaming couples I know. It's a great gift for your nerdy friends :)

This is a good 2 player card game.It works on the idea of set collection, with hand management. You're searching for mushrooms in the forest and you're looking to cook (not literally!) sets of cards to get flavour points. There's an interesting discard pile setup and a little bit of push your luck involved with this too. This game isn't easy to just pick up and play, there's a little learning curve, but it's not heavy. It's quite enjoyable once you figure out how to play properly and use all the cards.Good sneaky part, at the end, to do a little bit of maths too, for points totaling.

A wonderful card game for when you only have one other person to play with. I love the thematic play style of the cards moving down the 'path' into the player's reach (unless you have stick cards to trek further!) and eventually into the discard pile. Once you have picked enough mushrooms you want to cook them up in a pan, hopefully with butter or cider to wrack up the taste score. The art work is beautiful too. I would highly recommend this game to anyone.

This is an excellent 2-player game. The art is gorgeous and you do feel like you're in the middle of the forest collecting those delicious mooshrooms! It's very easy to learn and teach. You'll definetely need sleeves though since the cards are very fragile and after only two plays they started to peel from the sides. And once you sleeve them they barely fit the box (I didn't sleeve the sticks since you don't shuffle those).

Fungi is one of my favourite two player games. It took a couple of plays to really get the feel for this game, but my wife and I have played it countless times since. It seems like a light, simple card game at first, but it's also a tricky, deep strategy game that's really fun to play. Each turn you have to re-evaluate your position and make decisions that are often trade offs and sometimes gambles.

Fantastic, enthralling game that is very fast paced. Great subject matter too! Who knew that mushroom gathering could be so competitive!?The instructions are a little complicated at first, which could be down to the translation, but after a 'dummy run' through the game, it was fairly straight forward. It is painful to see the cider and the butter all disappearing into the decaying forest though!

4.3.2018

Whilst looking for two-player games this was recommended. It's a clever little card game (based on set-collection and hand management). It is a game that requires a little learning curve but offers plenty of repeatability with the added bonus of not taking too long. This game also has some strategy but isn't anywhere near as complex as some card games can be. It's a good game to take on holiday.

A super fun, easy to learn game with beautiful artwork and a unique theme. This is the European version of Morels. As far as I can tell, the only differences are in the artwork which is better in this game), the card size, the mushroom names being in Latin, and one small rules clarification. Since this version is cheaper, I'd recommend it (though it's not compatible with the Morels expansion).
