Update 2014: If you buy these two classic games directly from Steam all the latest community NewDark engine patches have been applied to Thief 1 & 2 and now all three of these old Thief games run perfectly on my Windows 7 64-bit Intel Quad core gaming PC. Steam's Thief Gold - i.e. 'Thief 1: The Dark Project' from 1998 with extra fan levels - looks pretty good on my 24" Dell monitor. Buying from Steam is slightly easier than finding and adding the patches to these old DVD/CD install versions, although there's only one needed for each game. You can also download the updated Thief I & II games from GOG.com. The games now support HD widescreen resolutions, i.e.1920 x 1080.These new patched versions of Thief 1 & Thief II: The metal age (2000) run under NewDark, a fan-modified version of Thief's Dark Engine. As I far prefer the original gameplay to the 'Thief 1 Gold' included in the other DVD sets and STEAM games, I simply NewDark patched this ancient SoldOut install copy of Thief: The Dark Project and the game now runs superbly under Windows 7 64-bit. Search on-line with the words 'NewDark' and 'Thief 1 and 2' and in the www.ttlg.com forums and elsewhere you can link to download the patches (one for each game, NewDark is at v1.22 as I write). If that's a bit scary, buy the NewDark ready patched STEAM or GOG.com versions. The next game, Thief 3: The Deadly Shadows (2004) has always run fine for me under XP and Windows 7, whether I use an install DVD or download via Steam (although Deadly Shadows still that the odd glide glitch where jump deactivates, but that's overcome by saving and reloading or falling off something). Although I seem to be one of the few, I also loved the 2014 Thief IV reboot Thief (PC DVD) game - nowhere near as good a storyline as Thief 3: Deadly Shadows though. There is now a Thief 3:Deadly Shadows GOLD TFix patch as well that massively speeds up loading times, helps playability and can add in optional fan levels (it works on STEAM installs as well).Original review: I have started replaying these classic old games as my old 1.2GHz Athlon PC with ATI 4x 256Mb AGP graphics card just couldn't handle the action on the newer Thief III: The deadly shadows. Game play in the thief series is pretty unique, you (the thief Garret) must creep around in the shadows, pick locks and pockets, stealing whatever comes your way unseen. You can knock out the odd guard etc. and drag him into the shadows (as if his body is found the alarm will sound). In most cases everything you steal can be sold to buy more weapons at the end of each mission. So no gung-ho charge with a BFG here, as in most cases you will be overpowered and killed (you can fight back but often at heavy cost to your health). The totally convincing stealth aspect is unique to the thief series, and the recreation of a rather surreal medieval Europe (with gothic engines and electric lights) is engrossing. It's a world steeped in dark magic, holy scripts and religious fervour. There are many missions in each game, often in cities or inside mansions, with occasional trips to lost cities and dark caverns (which are a welcome break in the game relieving any feeling of repetition). The game play isn't too hard, unless you decide or are forced never to harm anyone, and you can save anytime for difficult sequences. You do get the odd glitch, like I have never been able to get Thief II: The metal age to run as it says `No game CD in drive', eventually I cured it by putting in the first CD Thief I: The dark project. In this double pack you get one CD with one game on each side. Those with fast modern gaming PC's should definitely also try the latest Thief 3: Deadly Shadows as it has better graphics and even more developed AI and storyline. Not that these games haven't got decent graphics though, they look pretty good if a little sepia toned - no Doom II pixellated images here. Gameplay is atmospheric and goes very creepy when zombies and spiders are about - although you can chill out in the shadows if no-one sees you go there or bumps into you. The Dark Project is probably the best of the two games, with more desolate graveyards, abandoned cathedrals, catacombs and scary zombies, compared to the Age of Metal's infernal Mechanist's machines. The latter has better graphics though and more challenging game-play.These older games here aren't as XP friendly as Thief 3:Deadly shadows though, and may take some work to get running (you must see the Thief forums at [...] but both are available so cheaply in this Thief 1&2 double pack from Amazon at the moment it is hardly much of risk buying them. They seem to have the latest patches already applied. Besides other than the `can't find CD' problem these games have worked faultlessly on my XP Pro PC. So a great pair of games if you have an elderly PC or onboard graphics, and now going for a bargain price.

Played on Windows Vista 64 bit. Run as Admin. Compatability windows 2000. Supports single core machines only. If you have Dual core, then do this: load up the game->press Ctrl/Alt/Del to bring up task manager->Select Processes tab->select "show processes from all users" ok-> right click the game name in the list, and select "set affinity" -> Untick all the boxes, EXCEPT "cpu 0" -> click ok, and you are done, enjoy the game ;0)I remember playing Theif 2 & 3 clearly, but 1 was a bit hazy. I could had sworn i had played it, but having just completed it today via this sold out game pack, it didnt seem a familiar story, after all. However it was still a cracking game for its age i thought.I highly reccomend playing the short tutorial at the begining, just to get your self aquanted with the game. It's a FPS perspective, and you play the role of the Thief(Garret) mentioned in the title. You will need plenty of patience, as it mainly involves sneaking and hiding in the dark, to loot items & complete objectives. There is combat here, but it is usally used as a last resort mainly, and good combat gear(gas mines/arrows etc) are VERY expensive, which proves my point. The gear you buy depends on the amount of loot(converted into gold) you got at the end of the last mission, and it stacks up until you have to spend it on your own gear for the next mission. The overall in game graphics are very good still, likend to Morrowind I would say, maybe better. But the cut scenes are a bit blurry, but you can still see what is going on and it looks good. The missions have varied locations, although the goal is similar as you would expect from the game title.Palying Thief 3 deadly shadows now, and looking forward to Theif 4!

Beware that, even though these games will play under XP with the tweaks suggested by above, recent drivers for nVidia graphics cards (91.31) may render this game unplayable. System Shock 2 is similarly affected, and AVP 1 went the same way a while ago.
