I love the lens, if you need the extra reach on a full frame camera, you should 100% buy it. I have enclosed one image, and a cropped part of the same whole image to show the quality this lens can deliver. Remember this is pushing the extremes of hand held photography and camera shake is a fact of life at 400mm - so you have to tame it. Using a lens wide open usually means you're not getting its best image quality, so it is best to stop down one stop, and push up the ISO to 800 or 1600 - modern cameras can produce good quality at these settings, and it frees you to get into the 1/400th or faster shutter speed area. Note also the VC works well, around three stops. The lens also has a number of weather seals fitted,so if I should get caught in the rain, hopefully it will survive (same goes for dust and grit blowing in the air). I am very happy, except, I made the mistake of buying from a grey importer - I discovered this too late to return the lens, and now I am stuck with it, and no warranty. I am also excluded by Tamron from downloading updates to the firmware, and the tap in console will not function with it regarding these updates (though it will let me adjust focus etc, not that I have needed to). Tamron UK won't touch my lens with a bargepole simply because I didn't get it from the UK importer and pay nearly £150 more for it, which is a shame, but it is my fault. I wish Tamron would address this and perhaps charge a registration fee to make amends - but now, if my lens fails, I can't see me ever getting it repaired on warranty. Let us hope their quality is as good as everyone says and it never needs to go into the shop. I wish I could turn the clock back and buy from Amazon, but as these are renowned for quality and durability, maybe it will be ok in the long run. To be fair, I can't remember ever sending a lens away for any repairs anyway.Buy one, for sure, but if you can, get it from someone who offers the 5 year warranty direct with Tamron, so you know it's covered! This I added to the review in early December 2019 - The lens continues to work as a new lens, superb images, and no problems - Tamrons' newer lenses are really good qualiy whereas Sigma have a bit of a bad reputation for reliability, though the macro 105mm I owned was never a problem. I think with the price of own brand glass, this needs thinking about - Certainly, this 100-400mm is definitely as good as the Nikon 80-400mm which I have owned, so my long term view is, very happy, even though I lost the 5 yr warranty by a mistaken grey import purchase, I cannot complain in the slightest.

Bought for birding, compressed landscapes, some astro/lunar/solar - with a Canon 760D. And with a price imperative. After many YT vids., concur that image stabilisation is good, but falters at the far end (400mm [640mm FF]) when hand-held. On a tripod at full stretch, no problem. Back-button and auto-focus - again, no problems, and performs as expected.Manual zooming and focusing are low-geared and smooth. Control rings are wide and ribbed for good grip...Low light issues should be well-known: maximum aperture @ 400mm (640 FF) is F6.3 and likely to incur high ISO if a high shutter speed is desired. But then I suspect anyone buying this lens ought to know what they're getting into with these parameters.Such a focal length is new to me,and there is a learning curve, particularly travelling fast and light hand-held. But this is a fun lens to use, and performs (for me) better than expected given its price range. When I've hit focus (getting better), image quality has been exceptional - even to see crystal-clear background reflections in a gull's eye at 10m. That's what I mean by fun to use.Although early days yet, I'm impressed by the solid build quality and functionality of this lens.

Love it so far - only have prime lenses but this one seems just as good quality . Tried it on my 6d immediately and loving the results . Only knocked a star off because I need to spend another £109 for a tripod mount. I’ve had my eye on the canon L series 100-400 for ages and just couldn’t justify the cost for what is just a hobby really so compromised on this instead . So excited to get out and shoot more images with it !Update - had this lens a little while now and it’s fantastic . Can’t believe there are only two reviews here . I bought the tripod mount (needed ) too. Perfect lens for getting up a bit closer and so sharp.Nearly a year on and this is my fave lens - I have a canon 70-200 llens and quite honestly apart from the lower apature of the l lens needed in some situations I don’t see a difference in quality of the photos. I use this all the time - check out my photos from a birds of prey show....

I've had this a few weeks now and I'm extremely delighted with the results. Using it on my Canon 60D, making it 160-640mm effective, presents new challenges, such as focusing and image shake. The Vibration Control works extremely well. It seems to be jerky but very few of my images show signs of shake. I can quite happily use half the focal length for shutter speed. Focusing at such extreme focal lengths is new challenge and find using a mono-pod or tripod with live view gives excellent results. Auto-focus doesn't work so well and usually needs fine-tuning, but I suspect this is down to the ageing abilities of my 60D (and probably the ageing of my eyes!!!). Highly recommended.

Amazing lens. Use it on an APSC camera giving the equivalent of 150-600mm. Quite weighty if using it all day. Sadly the lens mount ring is a separate item and needed, along with a monopod or tripod. Despite this, I can’t praise this lens enough.UpdateHad feedback from Tamron when I registered the lens for the 5 year warranty. They informed me this is a grey import so not eligible. Disappointed with Amazon and the seller. I still think this is a great lens and I’m pleased with the quality of the photos, and maybe I should’ve guessed it was a grey import by the price. I’m not saying don’t buy but be aware

I've used many lenses of similar size and focal length, and for me at least this one hits the target perfectly.I wanted a lens that wasn't too heavy, this one is lighter than the Canon 400mm F5.6L, It has a closer focusing ability that will be very handy me in spring and summer, The AF is fast and accurate, plus the VC, (their version of Canon's IS) is superb! The images I'm getting so far are just what I was looking for. The 5 year warranty is also very welcome.I've included a couple of shots taken with the lens on my 7D.

If you check out the reviews it can be seen there is only the Canon mark II for competition. Yes it is sharper but it is not just cost, this is smaller and walking around all day is ok with this not the canon. Super sharp with very good vc it can be fine tuned with the tap in console. This is a keeper and one of the constant user lenses for so many days ot, two bodies with a wide angle zoom and this, sorted.

I used this lens on safari in Africa. The lens is much lighter than canon equivalent. Focus was quick and overall I was pleased with the images I got. I did plan to sell it when I returned home but decided to keep it and have used it numerous times since. Overall a very good option for outdoor use, good quality, sharp images and nice to use. Thank you Tamron

Been thinking about buying the Canon 100-400 but just couldnt justify spending the money wanted for the Canon. So opted for the Tamron and so pleased i did, i use this for aviation photography and the results are superb also its a very nice looking lens and well made. Would recommend..

Great lens and worth every penny. Virtually no sound from the focus.solid feel to the body and well layed out.love the manual focus override. Great quality of pictures on my Nikon d5300.dont find it too heavy can carry all morning with no bother.

I purchased the lens a few months ago, i use for aircraft photography, it is sharp, superb quality, light weight and very well made, nothing I can find to say in any negative way , worth every penny.

Used the lens at an air show 'out of the box' the day after receipt. VERY impressed at the results Only gripe is that the zoom ring works the reverse way to genuine Canon lenses.

30.3.2019

As good as the Canon 100-400 but half the price and a lot lighter. Focus will hunt at the 400mm end and f/6.3. Fully recommend this lens for Canon EOS.

Very happy with the performance of this lens, image stabilisation is excellent, all of the photos were taken hand held.
