I have used a variety of lenses of the years ranging from 55-250 kit lens from Canon, the 28-135 EF and some L series lenses such as the 100 L macro, 100-400 L and 400 L prime. I will compare the Tamron to these.Build / constructionThe Tamron feels solid, the plastic is higher quality than the Canon 28-135 by far, and does not creak or creep. Has a lens barrel lock and smooth but firm feel to the focus and zoom rings. Plastic hood included and secures into place with a solid click. The lens cap is better than Canon's, having centre pinch ability. This does not feel quite as good as my metal 100-400 or 400 f/5.6, but many other 24-70 lenses are also mostly or all plastic.Autofocus & VCMuch testing has been done on the autofocus speed, and after seeing some reviews online I was worried this might be a tad slower than some L glass. Not so. As far as I can tell without measuring, the autofocus is as fast and near silent. That said, very fast moving subjects are probably not this lenses' strongest point. The VC (Vibration Control) seems to work very well indeed. Noticeably good. I can take a useable shot at 70mm and only 1/6 sec. Impressive VC. It also is very quiet.Image qualityThe big issue. Well despite the online video reviews clearly showing the Canon 24-70 II as being sharper in the corners and with less distortion, the reality for most people this seems like a non-issue. This lens to me seems sharp and works well even wide open at f2.8. I have uploaded an example shot which has had only very minor editing. Of course it is sharper when stopped down, but they all are. Image quality to me compared to kit lenses, the Canon 28-135 and Canon 100-400 L is very good indeed. Close inspection of certain areas of bokeh, namely lights, produces an onion ring effect, which is not too pleasing. This is a fairly minor effect though and overall not a huge issue. Why buy?I considered among other things the following points:1) Buying non-Canon lens. I had never done so before and was worried about quality2) Buying the 24-105 f4.0 from Canon3) Buying the 24-70 f2.8 II from CanonConclusions:1) In this case buying non-Canon has not been an issue, the Tamron is high quality.2) At the time of this review the Canon 24-105 is about the same price as the Tamron but it is only F4.0. Bear in mind f/2.8 lets in TWICE the light of f/4.0.3) The Canon 24-70 f2.8 II is about a thousand pounds more expensive than the Tamron. It also does not have I.S. A 70mm lens without I.S sounds like something I don't want. I.S also help a lot if you video.Pros:- The only 24-70 f2.8 lens with VC (IS)- Great price compared to others- Five year European warranty when you register online- Great overall image and build qualityCons:- Onion ring effect with certain out of focus areas- Focus speed tad down on the more expensive Canon 24-70 f2.8 II- More distortion and vignetting than the Canon 24-70 f2.8 IINeutral:- Zoom ring goes in the opposite direction to that of Canon, if you are used to that- Overall a large and fairly heavy lensI will update the review in due course if anything changes, but so far the Tamron is an impressive lens, and all things considered about the best 24-70 about.***UPDATE AFTER TWO YEARS***Everything I said in the review still stands. Great lens, my most used by far and has worked for thousands of shots and lots of situations without fault.Saved myself a nice grand over the Canon and am very happy with the decision.

It took me a LONG time to decide which standard 2.8 zoom to go for. Over the past year I've looked at Canon's 17-55 (I shoot a 7d), Mark 1 24-70L, Sigma's 17-50 and Tamron's 17-50 vc - all in great detail! I finally decided to go with this lens based on sample images, video reviews, the ability to move to full frame in the future without selling all my gear, and ultimately the price. I am not disappointed. Sure I loose out on the wide end in respect to the 17-** lenses but over the last couple of years shooting weddings I've only ever really needed wider for huge group shots, in which case i just switch to a sigma 10-20. I've used Canon L lenses in the past and love their build quality but this Tamron did not disappoint!I'd even say that the barrel that extends seems even sturdier than that of the Canon 24-105.I've currently had 2 days shooting with this lens and Image quality is fantastic! Sure, wide open it's not as pin sharp as my Canon 60mm 2.8 macro, but considering I'm comparing a zoom to a prime I knew this would be the case. All in all i'm very happy with this lens. Bang for your buck it's a no brainer (weather sealing and (IS) VC... Yes please!) I know a few people criticize it for being excessively heavy, but i think it's spot on. The zoom ring isn't a fluid as that of the Canon L lenses and overall i guess it's just not as refined, but again I feel this Tamron has a very reassuring and positive action to it and considering Mark 1 24-70Ls still sell for around £1000 it's still a damn sight cheaper.I hope somewhere in this mess of ramblings there is a fair review and explanation of why I chose this over the competition. I do wish I could have found a shop less than 150 miles away that sold this lens and would have let me try it out first but it wouldn't have changed the outcome. This is a cracking lens and it seems bad copies are a rarity (The first one delivered to me is the one I'm keeping) so my advice would be to buy in confidence and enjoy!

I compared the Tamron 24-70 at 24mm with the 2 different Nikon lenses, one being the 14-24 2.8 at 24 mm and found some differences. The simple test consisted of shooting at focusing charts from a tripod. Initially the Tamron was noticeably sharper than the Nikon. Only after I fined tuned the focus (D600) and the Nikon lens, did the focus exceed the Tamron. Not sure what would have happened if I fine tuned the Tamron. I also compared the Nikon 50mm 1.4g against the Tamron and found them to be about equal in terms of sharpness, with the Tamron being slightly sharper. The Tamron seems incredibly sharp! The image stabilization is very handy too. The Nikon 14-24 was noticeably better built then the Tamron, but the Tamron seemed much better built then the Nikon 50 1.4g.Real world use of the lens is a bit of a different story. Climbing a small mountain at dusk enabled a chance to see what the lens could do outside. The saturation, color accuracy and contrast in the Nikon was simply fantastic. The images from the Nikon 14-24 just look amazing! Though the Tamron was tack sharp, and produced very good images, it lacked that indefinable quality of ??? After tweaking the images from the Tamron in PS, it still lagged the Nikon on over all image quality. Perhaps this test is unfair as the Nikon costs at least 50% more.Over all, the Tamron is a very impressive, quality piece of glass. For the money, it is unbeatable value. I plan on keeping it as a walk around lens for a good while to come.Update:Switched the Nikon 14-24 and it is sharper than the Tamron at 24mm.

Got a Nikon D750 and wanted a general purpose lens. Nikon's stuff is very expensive and reviews put the Tamron as basically equal to Nikon's offerings. Had two copies of this Tamron. The first was utter pants with residual aspherical aberrations - shifting focus with f-stops. It could not focus accurately at 70mm f2.8 and bigger f-stops gave no increase in dof - so no correction. At 24mm f2.8 it was really very good but less so as the focal length increased but again increasing the f-stop gave no more dof - likely shifting infront of or behind. Obviously something quite wrong there. Focus issues for zoom lenses are hard to fix.Whatever, Amazon was very good and sent another lens as a replacement. The second lens was quite different. It focused very well at 70mm f2.8 but not so well at 24mm f2.8 but stopping down to f4 was fine - there's a slight front focus at 24mm f2.8. So ovrall a much better lensI also have a D7100 and a DX 16-85mm Nikon lens and these issues are non-existent - it is very sharp from 16-85 VR wide open. Price of progress!!The Tamron lens has a 5 year warranty so things should be put right over time if they occur. It seems a very well made lens with good quality plastics. The specs are very good too. It has VR which is very handy in this range and which Nikon would want 3x the price for.

The killer of Canon EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM for sure. The picture clarity, color saturation and bokeh are superb. This is the best 'walk-around' for the 5D MKIII, the 24-70mm focal length is ideal, fast f2.8 and VC seals the package. In fact, I sold the Canon 24-105 for the Tamron without regret, relieved that I am no longer in possession of that 'dead weight.' The Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L II IS USM carries on seamlessly following the Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD. Combined with VC, 6yr warranty and great price, I believe the Tamron leads the 24-70 class.Update: I remembered the major con; a $1,300/- lens that does not come with a case ?!!My equipment:Canon 5D MkIIISony A7R + Metabones Mark IIISonyFE 55mm f/1.8 Sonnar T*Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L IICanon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USMCanon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USMCanon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM MacroCanon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fish-Eye USMTamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USDSigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM ARTSigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM ARTSigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSMKenko 2.0X PRO 300 Teleconverter DGXRokinon/Samyang 500/1000mm F6.3 MirrorCanon Speedlite 580EX II FlashCanon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite FlashCanon Angle Finder C

I was looking for a wide angle lens primarily for some creative street shooting and after a good deal of research I chose this, based on reviews. It has turned out to be a great selection. Build quality us very good, the angle really is fantastic on my cropped sensor, and the image quality is very impressive - generally sharp and it picks up low levels of light very well. Blur is easy to achieve. The small zoom range is enough to tweak the framing of your shot (if you want range this is not the option for you) and the consistent f. makes it simple to operate. I find the size and weight to be spot on for making it feel quality, yet being comfortable to carry round all day.On a recent trip this ended up being on my camera more often than not - over more expensive general purpose lenses, which I didn't expect when I brought it. Well worth a go.

Just can't praise this lens enough.Moved up to this price bracket for a lens to go with my Canon EOS 6D.Won't go into the technical details as they are covered by professionals in the various photo web/magazine reviews.I chose this lens based on the various reviews and its price, it does not disappoint.Sharp, quite focusing and quick. The f2.8 lens lets in lots of light and gives great shallow depth of field when used appropriately.Manual focusing is also nice and smooth without too much rotation from one extreme to the other. One smal criticism is the lens hood, which is a bit tough to get on and off. I wouldn't knock off any points for this though.

Fantastic lens. Very sharp throughout. Sturdy and a bit heavy which feels just perfect in hands. Compared to the Canon f2.8 24-70 counterpart it is great value for money. Razor sharp images... can get a bit soft round the edges at the widest of angles. Noticeable vignetting at around 2.8 but nothing that cannot be fixed in Lightroom. In fact, I don't even notice it as lens profile correct is automatically applied during the import process. It's worth noting that this is the only lens in this class with image stabilisation. And you won't believe how handy it is until you try it. Definitely recommended.

Great lens. The VC works very well, well-built and very nice sharpness. The focus is ok, not as fast as the Nikon version specially in low-light situation, but the other aspects makes this lens a winner for me.One of the main reasons that made me buy this lens was the VC since I work also with Video and have shaky hands. Trust me, it makes a huge difference.I'm very happy with it. It suits well for working in difficult situations where we need the "zoom", the extra-stops of light and sharpness, and for me it's a great add-on using it side by side with my Prime lenses.

22.8.2016

An extremely sharp lens. With a great zoom range. The F2.8 aperture gives great out of focus backgrounds. Good for portraits as well as Street photography. This Lens stays on my camera most of the time. It's sometimes struggles to grab focus in very low light situations. But when it does you can guarantee that the image will be sharp. If you're looking for a wide angle Lens with low distortion I would definitely recommend. The weathersealing allows me to be confident when using this in the rain.

5.9.2015

This lens is sharp, contrasty, well built, focuses fast with its HSM motor, has a good 5 year warranty, and produces great ouptut. There's really nothing to dislike about it. Even wide open I have found it almost matches prime lens IQ. The 24mm end is surprisingly good too. You need to stop down to get ultimate sharpness but then that is to be expected at 24mm. Highly recommended !

18.4.2014

Very nearly as good optically as the Canon 24-70 L II, for a grand less. And it's dust-sealed and stabilised. Bokeh is very natural-looking in my view, and the VC system is quiet and effective. This is what Tamron can achieve when they produce a lens designed to take on the big guys. Highly recommended. My only moan - that 82mm circular polariser's not going to come cheap.

22.5.2014

I like this lens it is good and sharp in centre wide open and sharp everywhere stopped down. The VC stabilization seems very effective. The lens is a similar size and weight to the Nikon 24 120 f4 it replaces but alas requires large 82mm filters.Tamron seem confident enough in it to offer a five year guarantee. Thanks to Amazon for the best UK price.

25.4.2019

I really want to like this lens, and I do for the most part. But when I shoot wide open at 2.8, it’s very soft focus and the bokeh in places looks like when you blink and have a double-wet look. Not the normal bokeh look. I’m just gonna send it to Jessops to touch up. If I shoot at 3 or higher it’s really great. A great indoor lens i’ll be using lots
