Firstly, I didnt buy my lens here, I should have and I'll explain later why.I have a nikon d4 and owned the nikkor 70-200 f4. This tamron lens was my little lockdown gift to myself and an *upgrade* to that f4 lens.I watched all the big reviews on youtube about this lens, even got a reply from the biggest name in online photography and everyone loves this lens so I bought it. Very excited.I'm a dog walker and take photos of dogs, especially action shots. I took the lens out into the garden for a test and threw the ball for my dogs and I could see instantly this lens was just lagging a little in focus speed, not much, I could capture action shots but it just missed way too many. In too many shots, the focus was half way down the dog or hitting the dogs tail, it was lagging as if it was just always one step behind the action. Dogs are hard to photograph especially when running at camera but my nikkor 70-200 f4 could track a lot better and I got way more keepers. So I messed with the settings took it out dog walking for the whole week and took thousands of photos. Yip, just a hair to slow to autfocus, which became frustrating. Taking good actions shots is hard enough but I was missing shots that would have been amazing keepers if I had another lens on it. For the first time ever I managed to fill up a 64gb memory card on just one day, I was taking so many photos cause I was missing so many, and no, it wasnt my lack of skills or using wrong camera settings. After 8 years of dog action photogaphy I have nailed the settings and my skills. But I did get some keepers, but I should have got 2-3 times the amount of keepers for the amount of pics I took.I tried it on low light, again just playing and it blew me away. It could focus and take pictures of things I couldn't see with my own eyes - that dark. The VC is incredible. I could photo things in the dark that were black to my eye and they would come out in colour and tack sharp. The low light ability of this lens is incredible, its also very sharp at 2.8 which is great too after owning the 80-200 af-d in the past which was always too soft at that aperture. This lens also has a fantastic close-up focus, there is a puppy photo attached to this review and she is sitting near my feet, I was amazed I could focus on her being so close. So why should you buy yours here? Cause I shoppped for the lens on google shopping and bought the cheapest one, but it was grey market and the thing is, they dont really want them back if you dont like it nor does it have the tamron warranty. You are basically buying "as seen" which is a bit shady. I mean its great way of saving money but they will try to resist your offer to send it back, they dont want it back. Anyway after some hassle, they took it back and I bought a second hand nikkon 70-200 2.8 v2. Not any better image wise, but the tracking and AF is a little faster and thats all that matters to me. It seems identical to the f4 in everyway (photowise and af speed) but with the extra 2.8f.So my opinion is this: As a general 70-200 2.8 lens this tamron is the best lens you can get, but it's not a dedicated action lens, it can get some sharp action photos but misses too many. For a similar price the nikkor 70-200 f4 is better for sports and probably the best lens you can get for the price if you shooting outdoors, but if you need that 2.8 then the nikkor 70-200 2.8 is your lens but no better than the f4 for images, af speed and also a lot heavier.Hope this review helps some people, cause I wish more reviews I watched focused on the action and af speed more than they did.

I also have the 24-70 f2.8 G2 but spent time reading various reviews to conclude this was the best value for money. The Nikon 70-200 f2.8 is around £1000 more, but if shown images from both lenses, I doubt if you could tell which came from which lens without looking at the EXIF data. For those unfamiliar with f2.8 lenses yes, they are bigger and thus heavier, if you don't like that either buy something else or go to the gym. The lens has a fairly well made solid feel to it & quite well balanced on my D750.The positive points for me in no particular order are:1. Price, good as it is, the Nikon was just too expensive.2. Image quality is outstanding. It does go a bit softer at 2.8 but so do most lenses3.Arca swiss clamp - no adaptor plate required as Nikon can't supply what customers want & you have to spend more on plates etc.4. Internal focus, nothing moves so the lens does not pump air when zoomed.5. Fits on Tamrons TAP console so you can firmware update if necessary.6. Works very well on Dx providing 105-300mm equivalent focal length.7. Bokeh is really very good at all focal lengths, it varies slightly through the zoom but looks great to me.8. Its 'weather sealed' Im slightly pessimistic here and always take a poly bag for if it rains, but some sealing is better than none.9. It has VC in 3 settings, Ive left it on 1 for now, the VC on my 24-70 f2.8 works very well, its a bit early to tell how good it is, but Ive taken shots at 1/15th and they look good to me.10. Tamrons 5 year world wide warranty. Finally, if you have an older Nikon camera check it will work with the lens at tamron.eu/lenses/sp-70-200mm-f28-di-vc-usd-g2/ you have to add the www bit as Amazon dont like linksThe trivial things that could do better:1. The lens cap is a tad plasticky - another 50 pence spent and it would feel a lot more solid2. The lens clamp ring - this works perfectly well but just feels like it could be better, again a few pounds spent would make an improvement. To sum up: Tamron have done a great job in providing an affordable 70-200 f2.8 lens that makes really great images on your Fx or Dx camera. The sample image is a 100% crop exported to .JPG - Amazon have silly tiny file size limts which I request amazon remove limits for photographers, 30Mb file sizes are not uncommon.

I bought this lens based on several reviews, which were super-positive.My experience is that the focus may need to be fine-tuned with the Tap-In Console, as my copy was not in focus at 200mm wide open at distances around 20m.Otherwise the lens is from factory very sharp - specially around 135mm, where similar lenses are usually weaker. At 200mm wide open it is a little softer, but still very good and better than the old Nikkor 70-200 VR1. Stopped down just to 3,5 it provides excellent sharpness. Compared to many competing lenses, this one is sharp across the whole frame and not in the center only, as my previous Nikkor VR1.The optical stabilizer is maybe the best I have ever met. It is incredible!I can take sharp images at 200mm with shutter set just to 1/25s. It may be even less depending on how steady You are. It is also completely quiet (including focusing), so it can be used for video with sound. The build quality is excellent and I have nothing to complain about. I would maybe appreciate a better plastic for the lens hood, as I have the feeling this may break easily. As this was the first time for me to have a lens with this layout of the focusing and zoom rings, I was quite confused for some time and I missed some shots at the beginnig just because I pulled the wrong ring. But I got used to it and I feel as comfortable with it as with the previous lens. This is the same case like with the latest Nikkor FL lens, which has the same layout.Regarding the size, it is a little shorter than the Nikkor VR1, so happily I can fit it in one of my camera bags, where the old Nikkor would not fit.The autofocus is super-fast and accurate.I am also looking forward to try the teleconverter as it seems to be rated very well in all the reviews. So from my side I can recommend this lens.Read full review...

I bought this lens thinking that because it was a good £1000 cheaper than the Nikon equivalent, it was going to have flaws in build quality and image quality...i have to say that it exceeded every expectation. After watching heaps of online review videos, I came to the conclusion that I should stop wasting time, and just buy it.The build quality is solid, the only thing that I would personally change is the plastic switches for the auto/manual focus...thats it. It has a really good weight to it, the metal body is amazing and the weather sealing mount is a bonus. The image quality is ridiculous for the price!!! If you are a pixel peeper, you wont be disappointed at all!its tack sharp even wide open at F2.8 throughout the entire focal range.Auto focus works quickly and efficiently, portraits are done with ease, but the continuous focusing on fast moving objects can sometimes be missed. And the VC in the lens is spectacular, not a single issue with that at all.If you are a really keen enthusiast then please PLEASE buy this lens, you will not be disappointing at all! considering the price compared to the Nikon, you honesty wont regret it. The photo iv attached was taken with natural light and minimal editing.Im happy to answer any question anyone has about the lens!

Had this lens for a few weeks now and having used various others in the same focal length category (the previous Tamron version, Nikon's VR2 and the latest Nikon), it beats them all for quality versus price. I was always happy with the original Tamron, and was about to buy it when the G2 was announced. My only minor gripe I have with it is if I have my camera attached to a sling strap at my side with the lens on, the switches to adjust VC mode and AF/MF mode seem to get knocked sometimes, but that is minor and can be worked around by either keeping the tripod collar on and shifted around the lens slightly, or covering that section of the lens with tape or similar. This won't be an issue if you carry the camera/lens any other way I expect. The image quality is stellar, the lens focuses extremely fast and seems more accurate at focusing than even Nikon's latest 70-200.And the VC... the VC! It's easily the best vibration control I've seen on a lens so far.Build quality is fantastic, and feels well weighted in the hands. I use this with a Nikon D750 and the balancing is fine.If you're considering it, I'd recommend this lens to anyone.

Stunning! Focus, tack sharp. Vibration reduction, amazing. Sharpest lens I own, all the others are Nikon and this is streets ahead on every metric. I can’t believe that this is the price it is at less than half the price of the Nikon. I have always used Nikon lenses, if I am in the market again I will definitely be looking at Tamron. Update: Disaster strikes, dropped the lens from height of one metre. Minor damage to filter ring everything else OK. So its tough! Sent it to Tamron repair and it took a little while for the part to arrive but once it had arrived from Germany the boys at Intro 2000 repaired and next day shipped the lens back to me. Cost of repair was reasonable,5 year warrantee unaffected and the lens is still the sharpest lens I own with the best VC I have ever seen. Just makes me want to say even more how very pleased I am with this lens. Brilliant piece of kit for the money and built like a brick .... shed!!

Good lens, definitely needed the Tap-in console, which I already had for the 150 - 600 G2, as I needed several adjustments for my D7200. Great image quality once adjusted, fast focus. Best results for clarity at F8 but acceptable at F2.8. Don't really use it beyond F10 but no diffraction issues upto F10.The foot is very small, can't get my fingers through it for carrying. Rotation smoothness is ok for the foot, not great can feel a bit gritty.Switches are awful and positioned badly, I tend to attach a sling strap for carrying and with the foot in the best position, to enable bringing the camera up to my eye, the switches are against my body as I walk and tend to get knocked out of my preferred settings. The switches are also obscured by the foot when in my alternate position. So quick fire is poor due to having to check the switches every time you try to take some shots.

Great lens for the money, well made and feels solid. The VC works well, better than the VR On my old Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR version one lens it replaced.Image wise its very sharp but it did need a little AF fine tuning to get it to that point. All in its a decent lens for the money and is every bit as good as the original Nikon f2.8 70-200 lens but with less vignetting on an FX body and a tad faster AF.If your after a decent lens in this class but do not want to brealk the bank its definately worth looking at.I now have the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC Di, the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 reviewed above and a Tamron 150-600mm f5.6-6.3 VC version 2 and really rate them all as super value for your money.

3.5.2017

Don't hesitate buy this lens it is amazing. The Optical Image Stabilisation is nothing short of a miracle and allows hand holding even in low light. And yes it is as sharp as a razor.Only downsides are the switches are slightly raised and I often find they have moved to a setting I don't want. And the matt finish is prone to marks but some far these have come off with a damp cloth. It is also very heavy so I use 2 straps one for the camera and one for the lens, so little weight is on the camera lens mount.Well down Tamron a winner at half the price of the new Nikon version.

Weddings - Portraits - Events - Used for over a year without fault. For the cost of one Nikon you can get the G2 70-200 and 24-70.Sweaty technical types will and have taken great pleasure in pointing out the differences between this and the Nikon, and everything they say is right... but genuinley for the price and quality you wont notice. And more importantly your customers/friends/family wont care. The build quality is brilliant, vc is great in low light and everything is very easy to get used to on the lens.I definitely recommend it.

24.7.2019

Superb value when you compare to Nikon equivalent that is double the price. Build quality is great, it has a nice balanced weight to it but most importantly images are very sharp, it really does take image quality to the next level if you're coming from kit lenses or cheaper alternatives. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this. The option of the Tamron Tap-In console puts your mind at rest to fix any auto-focus issues (no issues with my lens) and also ensure future compatability.

14.6.2018

The zoom ring was initially a bit stiffer than I'd like it, but it got loosen after a day of use. I hate that the zoom ring is outside. I'd prefer it to be on the place of the focus ring. It is heavy bastard. Nevertheless the previous two cons it is very very sharp (shooting on Nikon D750). Really fast auto focus. I could manage to create sharp image @80mm on 1/3 sec with closed aperture, so for me the VC is pretty good. Overall I love it. It produces beautiful images.

1.7.2019

Best lense purchase what I’ve ever made. The auto focus is outstanding and accurate. Very sharp and bring the quality what NIKON 70-200 does. I would say this is very competitive to Nikon but a £1200 cheaper. I’m very happy with it so far. My only concern is I’m curious how long it’s gonna last, if it’s built from good quality, premium parts not. Anyway there is 5 years of warranty which also a good thing.Although I do recommend it! Make a huge difference.

30.10.2017

This is my first ‘real’ lens and the difference it’s made to my photos is immense. Fast, accurate focus. Great image quality. Amazing VC.Also think it looks much cooler than the Nikon and Canon equivalents. Sturdy too.As others have noted the switches can be changed inadvertently when using a sling. I get around this by covering them with some black electrical tape, folded over at the end to make a little tab for easy access. It’s hardly noticeable.

19.4.2018

Build quality, lens feel and image quality are excellent. The stabilisation is great and really noticeable. Only bug bear would be that you have to remove the lens hood to reach the zoom ring but definitely not a deal breaker. First time I have moved away from Canon lenses and definitely has me convinced to consider more in the future
