If you are looking for an entry level RC that you can take down to your local RC track, this is not the RC you want. It is a re-issued, vintage, entry level RC kit. It uses entry level 1980's technology, save for a couple upgrades. It is not going to compete or handle like the current RC models. This is essentially a durable hobby grade toy.Nothing should be "missing" from the kit. "Missing" implies that it was supposed to be present with the kit. Tamiya's QA/QC and overall model quality are pretty superb. It is a hobby grade RC kit; meaning it does not include certain items, which is common for most hobby RC kits. The items not included in Grasshopper kit are the transmitter/receiver,battery/charger, servo, standard RC/model tools (hobby knife, small screw drivers, pliers, and file) and paint. It does come with a small hex wrench to fit the various nuts for the kit, but there was at least one nut that was in a position that was difficult to reach/tighten with the included wrench. So you may want to consider grabbing an RC tool kit that has small hex sockets. The kit contents include a small box with all the bags of bolts, washers, nuts, screws and specialty parts (like the transmission gears and grease), a sturdy black resin chassis, a sturdy white resin body/cover, the tires, various injection moulding sprues (the kit pieces that are attached to frames), the decals, and the instructions. The instructions can also be downloaded online at the Tamiya website. Nothing is painted; everything is pretty much either black or white plastic (or metal). You will need to use a hobby knife or plier snips to cut out the kit pieces from the injection moulding sprues. You can either file down the leftover spurs or shave them off with the hobby knife. The kit is easy and fun to assemble. You have some upgrade options, which include a better motor (the Tamiya RS540 seems to be the most popular, but you will also need an 18T pinion gear if you buy the RS540 motor) and sealed bearings. The sealed bearings used for the kit includes one (1) 5x8x2.5 bearing and nine (9) 5x11x4 bearings. It doesn't have to be Tamiya brand bearings (I used Traxxas aftermarket bearings for the 5x8x2.5) and you might have luck with these at your local hobby shop. The bearings are an ideal upgrade since the included "bearings" are pretty much just plastic or metal spacers. The one thing that you will really need to pay attention to when assembling the kit are the wheels. They come in three peices per wheel plus the tire. Once they are put together, they are very hard to take apart without gouging the plastic rims. So make sure the back tire treads are oriented properly and if you decide to paint, you are best off painting each piece separate before you assemble them. Another detail: if you decide to leave the center piece unpainted/white/different color like I did for contrast, be sure to either file the back side of the other two pieces clean or paint both the front and back of the other two pieces, as the back side of the other two pieces are slightly visible when assembled. Finally, you will need to paint the outer edges of the rims; they also show slightly when assembled. If you want the same exact color scheme as the picture on the box, the instructions tell you which Tamiya paint colors to use. TS-26 (Pure White Spray Lacquer) for the main body color. X-18 (semi-gloss black) for the roll cage bars. X-11 (gloss chrome silver) for the body detail. TS-26 (Pure White Spray Lacquer), XF-1 (flat black), XF-2 (flat white), XF-15 (flat flesh), and X-18 (semi-gloss black) for the driver. Alternatively, you can paint the kit whatever colors you want and used some, all, or none of the provided decals. That is the beauty of building the kit yourself :) I found that the local hobby shop was cheaper to buy the paint I wanted than to get Tamiya brand paint online. I went with a mica blue, white, and fluorescent orange color scheme using mainly testors paint. If you plan on doing a bit of detail painting, grab some high quality brushes, otherwise you will be spending a bit of time picking out loose brush hairs from your paint job.You can use pretty much any standard servo, I used the futaba brand. Roughly the same applies to the transmitter and receiver (both of which come together), again I used futaba's brand, the base model 2ch transmitter, which also came with servos. Not many transmitters include servos, just fyi. For the battery, I used the Tenergy 3800mAh combo with the smart charger. After all is said and done, you will be spending about two hundred fifty-ish on this kit.Pros: Fun to build, great quality (vintage) RC kit, pretty simple (less parts to break), durable and easy to use.Cons: A bit pricey, vintage 1980's technology (good and bad), limited upgrades, not a big aftermarket for replacement parts - once Tamiya discontinues it, parts will likely be a bit difficult to obtain.Update: 11/11/14 - It is a fun car to drive around. With the Futaba 2DR AM R162JE and Transmitter, the range is very long, like barely can see the car kind of long. I am really impressed with the battery life. Somewhere in the range of 30-45 minutes with the Tenergy 7.2V 3800mAh battery that I bought. The kids have a lot of fun with it too and while it has taken some damage to the chassis, it is running fine. Both of the headlights have been snapped off and a chunk has been taken out of the tail, but most of the damage is from indoor hazards. I am not a big fan of the battery cover design; it falls off a lot. I think a screw or maybe just some duck tape will work, but I haven't bothered trying yet. The wheels get poor traction on tile and hardwood floors, but do a little better on pavement. Works best on carpet. Steering is good, but due to the rear suspension being fixed instead of independent, it bounces around a lot and flips pretty easy. All in all, I am very happy with the car!I couldn't add a customer photo, so I put the finished car pic on my profile photo.

I remembered this car from when I was a kid. It brought back memories so I purchased it to start RC Hobbying with my kids. One thing I do recommend is to purchase a 540 motor and a pinion gear with more teeth so you can have faster speeds. This is a kit and requires you put it all together. it doesn't come with all you need to run it, so pay attention to that when purchasing so you can buy all needed parts at one time. All in all, I've loved it and ran it with my kids several times. I've made some upgrades to shocks, motor, and the pinion gear as mentioned above, so it performs better now. I purchased both the RS540 Sport Tuned Motor and the Tamiya 9805997 18T Pinion Gear for 540 Motor. This gave me a noticeable increase in speed. I also bought Tamiya CVA Short Shock Unit Set and put those on the back of my car, then doubled up the springs in the front shocks to make them stiffer. After running it a bit the front was sagging, as the springs lost their firmness. The rear shocks will require you to cut out a little bit of the body for them to fit properly at the top. The one "con" I have is the battery cover tends to come off occasionally, but you can zip tie it on. All in all, very nice car that brings back memories of my childhood in the 80's that I'm passing on to my kids. I highly recommend.

I had one of these bought for me back in '84, i was 14 but it was no problem to build. Also you learn a lot about the mechanics of a diff and suspension. As it is only 2wd and has a differential you would think it would get stuck on hills but it was so light all you had to do was keep going and it made it through.Because of the monocoque construction it was possible to totaly splash-proof it, mine went out in the rain often. The front wheel bearings wore out quickly as they were only bronze-phosphor plain bearings so if the new kit hasn't up rated you'll need roller bearings soon.As the motor is only a 380 it will seem slow if you already have something with even a basic 540 but for a beginner this means the battery lasts twice as long and you can practice at slower speeds in smaller areas.A 540 can be fitted easily if you want more speed and mine was uprated and it doubled the speed, again because it was so light. So a great begineers kit that can be built easily and as you learn the driving and mechanics of it can be uprated and improved, think I may have to find an excuse to buy one for my 5 year old!

Living my dream, just 30 years later. Always wanted this, parents never allowed me to get it. Now, just finished building with my 9 yr old. So much fun! Great bonding time. I was tired of buying Legos. It was time to graduate to something else. This kit requires patience for the first time builder. My son had a hard time with the screws, so I had to help. Hardest part is curbing the excitement and making sure the instructions were followed properly. Took about 10 hours to build, excluding paint and decal time. He couldn't wait to drive, so painting and decals will happen later. Our kit did not include an ESC.Purchased one for less than $15 on Amazon.Selected basic transmitter - not sure higher end is necessary.Upgraded bearings right away - didn't even have second thoughts about it.Once he masters the speed, might upgrade motor. But small one is fast enough for first kit build.Happy with purchase.

This is a super fun car and is a super easy build. It can be completed in a day. The included ESC programs easily. I used a Futaba reciever and transmitter and they matched at once. The body and parts are realy durable. It is pretty thick material and I would be shocked if anything broke. I would 100% encourage buyers to upgrade to the bearings set and the Sport Tuned 550 motor. The kit only include plastic spacer type bearings and most of those are installed in the gear box. GET THE SEALED BEARING SET. Build it right the first time. The kit only includes a 380 motor. the Tamiya Sport Tuned 550 motor makes this little car SCREAM!! Dont forget to buy the transmitter and reciever. They are not included. This is a very fun little car. I love it so much I think I will get a kit for my kid to do.

What can you say about this legend? This kit oozes 80's cool and is a blast to drive. It's not refined or sophisticated but it's good fun and while the 380 motor doesn't give blistering top speeds the gearing allows it to get off the line pretty sharpish still and the battery life is excellent! I highly recommend you buy a set of metal bearings and use them to build the car, they will last longer than the standard nylon ones and have much much less friction which means faster speeds and better run times. It's not going to win any races but it's great fun to put together, looks drop dead awesome and is so much fun to bash around.Excellent value too whether you buy ready to run or the bare kit it's a lot of fun for the money!

NOTE, This is a retro re-release! This kit is a ton of fun. I built it with my 6.5 yr old, and it brought back a ton of childhood memories. My son enjoys driving it, and learned more about cars going through the process. He is a little on the young side, which I knew, but for me this was more fun that the 100th lego kit :) We did take it to the local track indoor track. With foam rear tires, it held it's own pretty well in the novice section. It is durable, and still fun to drive, but if you are looking for more of a contender this isn't the kit. Its a great model to learn on, and it is durable enough that it should last fairly well with kids.Especially if you don't go crazy with motor upgrades.

This car is incredible. My son built the first one when he was 11. He's had it for about 4 years. It has been abused and run through everything. And it worked through it all. We just got another so the old one could be a parts car. You won't find this quality at big box stores. Yeah, you gotta buy more than just the car to get it working, but it's worth it. We bought one car in four years. Every other one we got in Big Box stores didn't have the ability to do what this one does or even lasted much past the first 2 weeks. So long as your kids has the ability to build them, this is the car you want.He is the envy of every kid who sees him racing this around and running it all over anykine terrain.

Having owned a grasshopper as a child that my father had built (minus decals and figure) years prior seeing this kit on sale made me want to buy and build one myself with all the decals and figure installed. With the help of my girlfriend we put the chassis together in an evening and decals on the shell. The kit does include the TBLE-02 Brushed/Brushless ESC but requires a servo for steering and radio.I chose to use a trusty Futaba S3003 servo and a cheap 2.4ghz radio.Overall we enjoyed putting this kit together and very satisified with the end result. Not to mention there is something about building a model from a kit that you just don't get with a ready to run RC.

I bought it for my 8 year old son for his birthday and he loves it. I had one when I was a kid and played with it all the time. I have to admit that I'm pretty jealous when he's playing with it.... The batteries seem to last a lot longer than they use to. That was always the drawback when I had mine back in the 80's so I got extra batteries and chargers, but we don't really need them. The battery lasts a pretty long time, starts to fade after about 40 minutes but I'm really impressed at how long they can run on a charge now. You can't go wrong with the Grasshopper, it's just plain childish fun...

Just like the one I had when I was a kid. I bought it to build and give to my 4 year old son in the hopes that he will get into RC, but it brought back so many memories of my childhood that I'm going to be keeping this one in my collection and purchasing another one that we will build together when he gets a little older. The only reason why I'm not giving this 5 stars is that the kit was supposed to include an ESC, which it did not. Still is classic Tamiya with excellent instructions and all parts labeled clearly. What a walk down memory lane!

Same great beginner R/C I remember from the 80's. Needed to purchase the electronics but expected. I went right for the bearing upgrade as well. To make sure the car got good performance from the gears. Excelent intro car. Fun to assemble with my son. Screws were put in by me. Most 10yr old hands wont be strong enough. Rips great on the pavement and hard dirt. Grass not so much. Still can uprade to a bigger motor when skill increases.

This is the most durable and dependable remote control car I have ever had in my life! If you want to play your rc car for a long time then you have to know the mechanic knowledge! Tamiya gives you chance to learn it and also you can easy upgrade your car without any big problem! Tamiya really surprise me for how wonderful the quality is ! Bang your money on Tamiya rc and you will not regret for what you pay for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had one as a kid, now introducing to my kids. The only negative is that it said tgat it came with a speed controller; the one I ordered did not. Disappointing to begin assembling it with my daughter only to tell her we have to wait a few days because a part that was described as being included, was not and had to be ordered.

Great little car. Bought this for my 12 year old son for christmas. However, I had so much fun building it and driving it about I've bought another model for myself. Can't wait for it to turn up. It's fairly quick and very tough. These kit cars are easy to upgrade if you want a bit more power.
