It's hard to say whether putting everything together or driving it around is more fun. I actually really enjoyed reading through the instructions, finding the parts for each step, and building the main components for this truck. The instructions are very clear, and broken apart into smaller, manageable steps. From start to finish, It took me about 20 hours in total, broken apart across a few days, to get the truck assembled, painted, and running. About 6 of those hours were just working on the body and outer details, though. This kit contains no electronics, so you'll need to provide the following:* Radio system (transmitter and receiver)* Steering Servo* Electronic Speed Control (ESC)* Battery and charger (plus batteries for the transmitter)You'll also need a Phillips-head screwdriver, paint for the body, and I'd recommend some CA glue for the tires.I outfitted my Lunch Box with a Hobbywing WP-1060 Brushed ESC, a 27T Axial motor, a Traxxas 2076 servo, and the cheapest FlySky radio system I could find that didn't look ridiculous. It's worth noting that if you're going to run with a LiPo battery, you will need to modify the battery compartment to make it fit. I took a dremel to a small plastic area, and now I can fit a soft-case battery in there no problem. It will not fit a hard-cased Duratrax battery without *really* forcing it in there, which just seems like a bad idea. With this setup, I can blip the throttle to make it wheelie, or I can ease into the throttle to get it bounding across the field. I've seem videos of people putting super-fast brushless motors in these things, which seems kind of... silly. Either way, I absolutely recommend gluing the tires into place, because even at regular speeds, a few sharp turns and they start to roll off the rims. All around, a really enjoyable build, and lots of fun to drive. It's not graceful by any means, but by keeping the battery down low, and having a wide stance, it really doesn't tip over as often as you may think.

Me and my 6 year old assembled this baby up within a day. Thats one day faster than assembling the Hotshot. It was so simple to put together, we had it running in no time.Slide the battery in, turn on the remote, then turn on the unit and the Lunchbox does its signature wheelies whenever you throttle it up fast. But dont expect it to turn as long as the front end is up, its something one has to think about before having the unit do this specially if there is an obstruction close ahead. The 540 motor is just right for this unit. Give it a faster motor, the vehilce wont be able to handle the turns too well which is what happened to my daughter who gave the newly painted pink body a couple of scratches on the top side of the cover. But its all good, its all fun. Teaches her self control in easing up on the throttle and turns. Speaking of turns, with the big tires, the turning radius is much wider than the buggies, of course. Ample space is needed to negotiate good turns. Done at a slower-than-max speeds, the Lunchbox can do drifts and 180 turn arounds...just make sure you cement glue the tires to the wheels first. If i only had the money when i was a kid, i would have gotten one of these...after getting the AE RC10.

Tamiya RCs are not for the plug and playstation generation. Having seen the other reviews here I have to say that ofcourse they dont come with RC, battery and charger, they never have done. They also take hours to build and require ongoing tinkering and repair to keep them going. BUT stop bleating, THAT is the whole fun of it. As a 37 year old dad who loved Tamiya as a kid, I have introduced my children to it and they love this van. It goes like a rocket, is simple to keep going and gives hours of pleasure to all of us. You will end up buying loads of batteries, spare parts and inevitably more trucks / cars. But even with the more expensive and fancier 4x4 trucks, this is still more fun, faster and more durable. The kids learn far more building and repairing and tinkering then just pulling a ready to run cheap RC from a box. Enjoy! this is great.

This is my first ever rc car and I have really enjoyed building it. For anyone who is wondering this comes as a complete build it yourself kit, it does not take long to build as I built it in around 4 nights and I wasn't rushing and I am a complete novice. In addition to buying this kit you will also need to buy a transmitter, receiver, servo, esc, battery and battery charger. All this came to just short of the cost of the car again, I think it was about £155 all in.There are also various parts available to upgrade the car, you can buy new bearings, suspension, motors etc. So you should get plenty of use out of this thing. The car itself goes really quickly and the kids and I have enjoyed thrashingit around the woods.Highly recommended

This is a real fun kit to build. However, this kit is not a completed ready to play car straight out of the box so you will need to assemble it.You will need to buy the electronics separately. I heard that you may get a electronic speed control (ESC) in the kit but it depends where you get it from. When I bought my kit from Amazon, the source was directly from Japan and mine didn't come with one so be sure to read the packaging carefully before you buy your electronics.Overall, I was very satisfied with my purchase and I would recommend this kit to anyone who wants to own a this classic remote control van from Tamiya.

VLB is probably one of my favorites hands down . I'm a Tamiya fan now , can't wait to buy another. I planned to make her a shelf queen but what's the fun in that?! I put the RX in a left over RX box from an Axial build, vented the tires because they filled up with water. I run it in wet snowy conditions no problem. The ESC and motor it came with get the job done well, pops wheelies all day on 2s lipo. I personally haven't had great longevity with brushed motors so when this one goes out I'll replace with a brushless, the provided ESC does brushless also.Highly recommend.

I got this item yesturday, I opened it only to find that it doesnt come with controller, car charger or battery pack.(I realised after buying it says in the ad that you need this but i never saw it!) So only buy if your willing to pay almost the same amount of money again to buy charger, controller etc. Also the instructions to build it are VERY long and complicate!!!But other than that I am sure its a good car.i ment to rated durability 3 star by mistake, i dont have a clue how reliable it is cos i sent it back.

Bought this for my daughter and she LOVES it. Kit was super easy to put together. The Lunchbox is extremely durable. My daughter, who is only 7, has extremely limited driving skills. She runs the vehicle into sidewalks and walls at full speed and nothing has broken so far. It's a great way to introduce your kids to RC cars because it is fun and whimsical and most of all, can handle all kinds of abuse without falling apart. There's something about the Luncbox that puts a goofy smile on your face when you drive it.

i got this kit in the early 80s when stationed in Japan. is was a great build and great fun to drive. I found it by accident on Amazon. Was very excited so i ordered one, i brought back a lot of awesome memories of my fellow Airmen and I racing these trucks on any patch of dirt we can. Love Tamiya products. Looking forrward to getting the other Tamiya cars I had back then( Monster Beetle, Clod Buster and Midnight Pumpkin)!

I haven't recieved mine as of this review but i have had one in the past, got my first one in 1987 and I loved it, not hard to assemble i put my first one together when i was 11. Got this one for me and my 6 yr old son to put together, these are way more durable than anything you but at Walmart, you will have to purchase the radio seperately but if you are looking for a rc that will last years then this is a great choice!

This was a fun, pretty simple build, but it has some design problems that you'll probably struggle with. The front shock towers need to be screwed in deep and once (else they strip/come out while racing and you can attempt an epoxy repair). Also the tires are always coming off the rims. The servo saver broke on me once and I had to use the included extra.Still, crazy fun to build and use. You should still buy it! :-)

Ok, I was excited to see this kit for sale at such a good price. I remember the crazy antics of my original Lunch Box, and can't wait to get this RC running. Upon inspection of the re release of this model I was happy to see Tamiya is still producing high quality RC kits. This kit took about 2 hours to build, and everything fit well. This would make an excellent first RC for a young enthusiast to build with a parent.

Everything about this kit is just perfect. I built this same model 20 years ago when I was little and it brought back lot of memories when I started building it again last christmas for my nephew. The parts are really durable (my nephew drove the car straight to side walk at full speed few times), and doing wheelie is just so much fun. Love Tamiya's stuff. Thinking about getting FJ40 for myself.

Good first build for a 12 year old. He needed help at the beginning but was able to finish it up all by himself. Fun truck, fast. There are a lot better trucks out there if you want to race, but this is a good one to start with and learn on. Fairly simple with a solid rear axle but it has a real differential.Bought from seller TOY SHOP JAPAN HOBBYONE and it didn't come with a speed control.

18.5.2016

If you change the shocks to settle this little truck down, you have missed the point, and should have bought something else. Tamiya built this to bounce all over the place, and that's what makes it so fun to drive. Definitely scrap the plastic bushings for some good sealed bearings, during the build. Neighbor kids love this way more than any of my other RCs.
