This little starter house has much play potential for the child who wants to progress from Happyland/Fisher Price 'dolls' houses to something a bit more fiddly and is an excellent first step into the big world that is Sylvanian families play sets without overcomplicating things and to be fair is a lower-risk option due to the fact it is circa £20.What is great about this house is it can be as little or as much as the child and your budget allows. The rooms that it comes with is pretty much the same as my daughter's Happyland house except it doesn't have a built in bathroom, but still, a kitchen, table, chairs and a bed is more than enough for a child to get going with small world play and to be fair is plenty to stimulate the imagination. However when a child progresses beyond the play potential of the house alone you can then buy room packs or another structure such as the big house Beechwood Mansion or one of the shops etc to attach to the starter home and add additional layers of play but it is still a perfect toy by itself.Yep there are some fiddly bits so be careful if you have under threes or a persistent mouther and the packaging and contents leave a hint of 'if you just buy X' which may encourage pester power whether from the child or you desiring to increase the play value so be aware you may want to remove from the box before gifting if this may be a problem. My 3.5 year old loves small world play but up til now anything more than the basic figures from Sylvanian families has always been just too much due to the dinky pieces. I had been thinking of investing in some pieces for her in preparation for Christmas and her birthday so was delighted to try this perfect first play set.Overall it's an excellent Christmas/birthday gift for the circa 4-6 market (obviously children differ and may be ready before or after this window) who have so far not got involved with Sylvanian families. It has just enough to keep interest, it is comparable to the things you get in Happyland houses so there's plenty for play value until they may decide they want to extend the kit where it is handily compatible. As a mum who wasn't allowed Sylvanian families as a child no doubt there's a little of living vicariously through this set, and the child in me thinks it just as perfect and sweet just as much as my daughter does.

Sylvanian Families is a series of toys that I played with when I was a kid (my mum would buy me a set every Christmas), and I'm pleased to see that the series is still going strong.First things first, I think, for the price, this is good value for money, and the perfect starter set to get your child's Sylvanian Families collection started. The box contains a cosy cottage home; it's sturdy and well-made, comes with a ladder and is split into two floors. The top floor slides out and can be flipped over to reveal a green side which can be used as a garden. Cool idea, but I don't see my daughter doing this often, she'd probably prefer a upstairs in the house, rather than use the panel as a garden.Nine pieces of furniture are provided, with the option of buying extra sets if you wish to decorate your house some more. The furniture fills the home nicely, and whilst 'cosy', there is room for extra items. With a sink and oven, table and chairs, bed, plate and even an omelette to eat, there's plenary of props to stir a child's imagination. It's a shame more types of food aren't included, and also some extra pieces of bedroom furniture (whilst the kitchen is filled out, the bedroom tends to look a bit empty with just a bed). Still, as stated above, you can always buy extra sets.Freya the rabbit is included, and she's a nice sized figure. Again, if you wish, you can buy extra family sets, but to be honest, this box contains everything your child could need.If you decide to expand your collection, the cosy cottage can be used as an extension for other sets. It can be placed over the bakery or corner shop to provide living quarters, and the furniture can be used in the family car to turn it into a camper van.Overall I think this is an excellent product and would make a perfect gift. I think it's a good price for what you get, and with the option to expand is going to provide years of entertainment. Well-made and durable, this is a toy that will last. Highly recommended.

I have bought this starter house several times as I have 3 neices. It is extremely good value for money and an excellent introduction to the Sylvanian Families world - which is lovely for small world play. The quality of the Sylvanian toys is excellent - they are undeniably plastic, but it feels nice and is very robust. This includes the furniture, tiny accessories and the creatures. The inclusion of the furniture and girl rabbit mean that the child immediately has an entire mini world to play with. We have fun decorating too, adding wallpaper, carpets and curtains. If you are handy with needles, you can also easily make little clothes too. You can of course buy furniture separately if you want to add.Note that the chocolate rabbit family are available as individuals with furniture items, or in a family set.If your child is a fan (I have only ever had success with Sylvanian...), this little starter home can be added to other buildings as they grow their collection. The upper floor can be removed to alter the configuration of the house - useful for younger children, who can be less dextrous.I would add that this is not just for the girls. I keep a Sylvanian dolls house for the various small children that visit (and I admit, for me - I quite love it!) and the little boys are fascinated and love to play with it too. The fact that the inhabitants are animals rather than dolls is good - they are cute and appealing as well as being gender and culturally neutral. As a side note, this stuff actually keeps its value. Sylvanian stuff is very collected, and my family have re sold their houses and accessories when they have outgrown them. If you have space, it's worth keeping the boxes in the loft...I thoroughly and confidently recommend this set, which will provide hours and hours of play.

SylvanianAs the description says, this is a “starter home,” meaning it could be a starting point for a collection but it could also be added to an existing collection. It consists of one bunny person and a house and furniture with an upstairs and a downstairs and furniture. A ladder is used to go up and down. Or for the imagining of going up and down. Because the Sylvanian concept is very much about imagination, as is all children’s play.It is my opinion that way too many children’s toys are needlessly ugly and that for some reason we have developed a belief that children should like these ugly objects. A triumph of marketing and crowd control?Well children are so full of wonder and imagination that no doubt they transform whatever they are given. That is why a twig can become a gun, a doll or a river. And children’s play is full of imaginative storytelling, narrative for themselves and others.Amongst all this sea of ugliness, the Sylvanian families are much more attractive. It is made mostly of synthetic materials but that keeps the price down. Bunnies have a long history of charming children, as in Beatrix Potter. Funnily enough, it is the simple faces that lend themselves to imagination. My own daughter and grandchildren have enjoyed good hours of imaginative playing with them. So this will make a fine gift, whether they are already fans or not. This Starter home, like Sylvanian families in general, connects to others, which of course helps with sales but it also makes sense. And you can play with this indoors or out.I am a grandfather and was once a trained early years teacher. I received this for an honest review via Vine voice

This starter set is a great way to begin your collection. It includes a quaint little cottage and some basic furniture, which is a good foundation for building up a bigger collection. The quality is, and always has been, very good. The plastics are not cheap and shiny, they are matt, textured and very realistic.I've collected Sylvanians Families for years, I've got so much in my loft I can barely get through the hatch. It's a wonderfully enduring brand that children love because it's so immersive in the world of the animals in clothes, and one that I love, as an adult, for the nostalgic memories it brings of playing with it myself when I was little.Once you've got this starter set,I'd recommend investing in more family sets of animals and some more buildings so you can start to make a little town. Many sets have been discontinued over the years, but it's possible to get some great vintage sets on the auction websites, and I think it's nice to have a mixture of current sets and also older sets that particularly strike a chord with you. I have the canal boat set for example, which I love, and one of the original wedding chapel sets with the bride, groom, vicar, lovely bridesmaids and of course the cake.Overall, I believe that here's nothing better for helping children use their imaginations and role playing than realistic buildings and animals. These are ideal for children of about 5+. The packaging says 3+, but personally, as there are so many small parts and younger children tend to break so many delicate things, I'd wait till your child is at least 5.5 stars.

This ‘Sylvanian Families Cosy Cottage’ is described as a ‘Starter Home Set’ – and this means more than it is a first home for a growing family – it could be the start of an expensive collection of many many ‘Sylvanian Families’ products. However it could be a stand-alone toy for young children (3 or 4 up to 6 or 7 years old) though it is clearly marketed as being linked to a series of dolls’ house types of structure plus an almost endless variety of figures and accessories. The cottage is 2 storeys with living room/kitchen as ground floor and bedroom above connected by a ladder, and it is complete with furniture, utensils, and a chocolate rabbit figure.Apart from the rabbit clothing and bedspread all is made of plastic but it appears quite robust, and in bright colours it is immediately attractive to youngsters. With a 10½ x 8 inches base and 10½ inches high overall the cottage is a nice size for playing on a table, and it is easy to access as the front is open. The first floor panel can be removed to make a single storey cottage, with the reversible panel used as a patio, garden or carpark. However for extended play it really does need additional items. The product is not cheap and it must be recognised that as a ‘starter’ it is likely to result in future spending – see the colourful accompanying leaflets for dozens of tempting ‘Sylvanian Families’ items, and a small story book to whet children’s appetites – and there’s a ‘Fan Club’ to join! You have been warned!

This is an utterly gorgeous starter set for a Sylvanian Families collector and very reasonably priced. It's described as a starter home but really its just two very small rooms. Don't be disappointed with the size though at they have squeezed a lot of value for money furniture into the rooms. You get a bed with some bedding, a dinner table, 2 dining chairs and a bench, a sink/hob unit and a frying pan and a plate with food and a fork. The house has a ladder to give it a finishing touch. This set also comes with one figure - a white bunny. It's such good value for money (I've said that already!) It says 3+ on the box but a smaller child who is really careful with toys like this might still appreciate it.You know your child best. The box also pictures the house with several sets of furniture (available separately) so you can really cram a lot stuff into this cottage if you want to. It has endless potential. It's also possible to connect the cottage to other houses to create a bigger house. The first floor is detachable and reversible so it can be used as a grass area extension to the front or a ground floor extension. And the ladder can be placed inside the house to the tiny little balcony/alcove by the window. The kitchen furniture is designed to also fit in the seven seater car which is also available separately. This will make a great present for a Sylvanian Families fan. Will please both a seasoned collector and as a first time collector. Buy with confidence.

A good feature of this Sylvanian Families Cosy Cottage Starter Home Set is that you can see exactly what you get from the clear pictures. But it does not stop there. If this is a gift for a child when they open it they can see immediately what they are getting because the rabbit Freya is instantly visible along with her bed and bedroom thanks to the large clear plastic panel on the front of this box.Now don’t under estimate the fact that this box will make an instant impact. If you think that you child will love this type of gift you really are onto a winner with this excellent starter set.The set has the front of the cottage and a bedroom and downstairs dining room. The ten pieces include a bed complete with attractive blanket and pillow,a stove, a table with two chairs and a two seater bench. You also get a frying pan, a plate, a piece of food (that fits the plate and the pan) and a fork for the Rabbit Freya to hold as she eats her delicious looking meal.As this is a starter set you can add the various extra parts as stated and add to the rabbit family (provided you have the bucks)along with the furniture and fittings. The price,at the time of writing, is just under twenty which is reasonable for a toy of this pedigree and quality. The set is super safe, washable and will last for ages.A total winner- great for Christmas presents. Thanks for reading.

Great starter set for the new Sylvanian Families collector. My little one has had hours of fun playing with this and creating scenarios with the rabbits. I bought the Chocolate Rabbit Family as the Cottage set only comes with one rabbit. Unfortunately the Rabbit family set comes with a duplicate of the rabbit you get with the cottage so we now have twins! I also bought the Designer Studio which comes with another Chocolate Rabbit family member which is nice for extending play with extended family. The cottage set comes with a minimum of furniture to get you started and there’s just enough space for this to fit comfortably and allow space to manoeuvre characters to play. You get a range style cooker,a dining table and chairs, some cutlery and crockery and a bunk bed. You can buy extras to supplement but I think it would be a challenge to get anything more fitted in downstairs though there is some space upstairs (e.g. for more beds or a bathroom.Overall a great value starter set.

We got this out this weekend for our small visitors aged two and a half and six. The two year old (a boy) saw it on the table, went straight to it and immediately began to play. He had a lovely time and it kept him busy for ages. The six year old wasn't so bothered at that point but had other things to do. However, the following day, in need of down time, she spent quite a while with the rabbit and some drafted in finger puppets making up stories and 'cooking food' for the guests. Also moving the furniture about. The cupboard under the sink opens to show a drainage pipe and the oven door pulls down. This is a sturdy, attractive well thought out toy for imaginitive play and I can see our two youngsters getting a lot out of it.It's good value for money and with add ons to go with it, I would consider it a worthwhile buy.

This is a rather nice cottage, which comes with one Sylvanian character (chocolate rabbit I am told she is called) and some furniture (table and chairs, bed, cooking area). Its actually rather good for the price which is something I am always a little bit put off by with these toys. Here you get a house, furnished and a character too. Its good value. Economics aside though, the real question is will children enjoy it. Well the two of mine that enjoy Sylvanian Families love this. It sits nicely with their other buildings and characters. The only problem is that when the Sylvanians are out, the lego is in the toy chest, we need a bigger house! So, it certainly hits the spot, the positive reception of my children to this cottage is at a good sign and at this price point, its not too hard on the pocket either.

Sylvanian products are wonderful - not cheap, but perfectly made and great for children who live make believe with quality, tiny items. Do keep the parts away from under 3 year olds. The packaging is perfect - it makes a real "Wow" with Freya the rabbit in key position at the front. There's loads of tiny bits (including food, that fits on a plate and frying pan) - again, keep away from younger siblings.I can imagine this in pride of place position in a child's (most likely girl's) room, age 4 - 7 or so. It's labelled as not for under 3, but the ideal age is a little above that.Makes a stunning Christmas or birthday present. There's enough there to not need to buy extras straight away, but you will, you will...

I was delighted to get this house for my niece's Christmas. Couldn't believe I could get a whole Sylvanian Families house and bits and pieces for just £20. In the 16 or 17 years since I played with Sylvanian Families this set showed they haven't changed: they remain sturdy, nice looking, well designed and well made toys. Rating presentation down a little because there was quite a bit of plastic and there was no need for it. They could easily have had a cardboard outer box without the big viewing window hole and a smaller cardboard inner box containing the figure and the furniture. But purely as a toy: absolutely brilliant, my niece loved it and it was excellent value for money.

In the world of Sylvanian Families this is a total bargain and the packaging makes it a fantastic gift. Great quality and a really good intoriduction to the world of these small animal families. Now here's the catch and here is probably why the manufacturer made the pricing so reasonable . The recipient will want to fill it with sylvanian figures and that will add up as they are not cheap! My daughters loved it and they already had plenty of figures to put in it.So in short great value, excellent quality as always and makes a fantastic present. Depending on your budget you could add some extra characters to the present and it would be a huge success for any young girl!

I bought this as a birthday gift for my daughter (age 5) from her nana (who is allergic to online shopping!).As with all sylvanians family toys the build quality is very high. I think you do pay for that quality too. This set contains a good set of house furniture and house bits to start off a sylvanians home.In hindsight the set is possibly not yet suited to a 5 year old because some of the parts are quite small and she isn't yet very good and keeping things neat and tidy! There is 1 rabbit character in the set, a fridge, desk, chair, telephone table, piano and range of small accessories. It's a good starter gift set for a child getting into sylvanians.
