In one of my favourite books about doing art with children, a primary teacher mentions something her father used to say: the family was too poor to buy anything but the best quality. There are cases when this is absolutely true, and these pens offer a great example of "You get what you pay for". £21.00 (at time of writing) for 14 pens initially looks like a considerable expense for children's art materials, but if you have ever been tempted by those massive packs of skinny felt tips at the pound shop, you will understand the frustrations of false economy!Stabilo obviously pay a lot of attention to the design details of their products and how to make them as child friendly as possible.Hence these pens are chunky and triangular to encourage proper grip and suit smaller hands. However the triangular cross section also means the pens won't roll off the table. Lids snap on with an audible click and can click onto the end of the pen whilst it is in use, all of which should hopefully amount to fewer stray pens and missing lids! The colours are vibrant and the ink is good quality and lasts well, the colour range encompassing all the basics: brown, black, peach, pink, red, orange, yellow, light and dark greens, light and dark blues, and purple. The nibs are similar to a Sharpie so with practice it's possible to get relatively fine detail as well as easily filling in larger areas of colour. Best of all though, is that the nibs are retractable. For reasons unknown to me, virtually every child I have ever done art with has, at one time or another, found it necessary to repeatedly pound their marker pens onto the paper with great force, usually rendering the tips of said pens unusable. Stabilo have sorted this problem by making the nibs retractable, so if a child pushes them into the pen, they will simply spring back once the pressure is removed. The perfect solution and one that makes the pens much more durable and long-lasting.If the higher price point means it's not realistically possible to buy these for everyday use, if you have a child who loves drawing with pens, these are worth buying even to set aside for special projects. They really will pay for themselves with hours of creativity!

I'm a big fan of the Stabilo children's range. They have been cleverly designed, I suspect with much research into child physical and intellectual development regarding both fine motor and artistic expression (scribbles to mandalas etc theory) as the whole range offers colouring media for each stage throughout the progression from the heavy handed scratch up to detailed drawing and colouring in.This set from the Scribbi range is perfect for the toddler who is beginning to move beyond light handed chicken scratch scribbles to colouring with force as their hands strengthen and fine motor skills are developing. What this often means is smashed in colouring pens and crayons as if they've taken a nose dive off the Eiffel Tower,it's hard for children to understand the degrees of pressure until a bit later both physically and intellectually as they develop coontextual awareness of natural forces that they themselves apply and experience which is why saying 'go gently' inevitably doesn't work.These pens are designed to relieve frustration both for parents in damaged pens and child in not being able to 'go gently' and the frustration of disappearing pens when they want the green they smushed beyond use yesterday for example. Each pen has a thick nib suitable for the artistic skills and development that happens during the heavy handed stage but each nib retracts with pressure meaning no more smashed nibs.The triangle shape of the pen barrel is in addition perfect for this stage as the target development group are still in the 'fist' hold stage and this offers better grip and control of the pen for both the littlest hands to older users too.These really are excellent, my now 3 year old wrecked her set of crayola pipsqueaks at that stage I wish they'd had these around then! At least with her younger sister I won't worry she's going to ruin her big sister's pens with these on hand.From a development point of view these would also be excellent for users with reduced fine motor skills due to muscular or developmental conditions as the grip is excellent and the same principle of lack of control over pressure is solved by this design.

Lately I have been doing a lot of art therapy type of colouring ... I find it relaxing and therapeutic especially when I am feeling stressed or sad. The only problem is with this form of relaxation is that you get through a lot of colouring pens and pencils. So when I had the chance to review these felt tip pens from Stabilo I jumped at the chance.The pens come in an attractive pack which has a colourful picture on the front of children playing, which makes these pens very attractive to children.There are fourteen felt tip pens in all, in a good selection of colours including:• Peach / Pink• Purple / Red• Yellow / Orange• Light green / Dark green• Light blue / Dark blue• Light brown /Dark brown• Grey / BlackThese felt tip pens are washable and non toxic (which is great if you want to let your kids colour with them) they colour beautifully and the colours are a good representation of the colours shown on the barrels of the pens. These are fairly fat tipped pens (1.5mm to 2mm) so colouring a large area is not really a problem, they are also superb for outlining or for doing some of the clever shading techniques that are often used in art therapy colouring.A great feature of these pens are the almost indestructible spring loaded nib ... This is brilliant if you have young children who have a habit of stabbing the paper with the felt tip pen nib which usually ends up with the nib disappearing into the barrel never to be seen again. All of my children did this which really frustrated me and them when they then couldn't colour/scribble with them. This feature aims to prevent this happening.These pens are of a standard length and the barrels are triple sided which help with grip.I really like the fact that you can actually put the lid onto the bottom of the pen when colouring, so no lost lids.I have used these felt tipped pens for a few weeks now and they seem to be lasting well with none of them running out of ink ... so far.

Stabilo is, for me, synonymous with quality and these pens are no exception. Any parent, teacher, or childcare worker can tell you how quickly children get through felt pens. Sure, you can buy the cheap version from the pound shop every week, but at £7.38 (at time of writing review) these will actually stand up to some abuse.So if you work with children or if your little one is an aspiring artist, it may well be worth splashing out on these pens which are both satisfying to use and also designed to be durable even at the mercy of little hands.Lots of thought has clearly gone into the design of these. The 8 colours included will cover most basic drawing needs. The barrel is chunky and triangular,which is much easier for young children to grasp and encourages the correct grip which they will need to develop for holding finer pencils etc later on. The ink gives really vibrant, satisfying colour, and the nibs are similar to a sharpie so offer a good compromise between offering lots of coverage quick and getting reasonably fine lines with lighter pressure. The ink is easily washed out of clothing at 30 degrees, which will be a great boon to parents. And of course, best of all, the nibs are cleverly designed to retract under too much pressure. As someone who teaches art to children, I have wasted hours of my life begging them not to hammer the paper with their pens - now Stabilo have come along and solved the problem for me! If I'd had these years ago perhaps I could have added a week onto my life!!Altogether, this means these pens are the ideal drawing instrument for children, indeed the only thing missing now is a clever design that forces them to return caps to pens and pens to storage containers after use! But that might be beyond even Stabilo's capabilities....

This pack of 14 Triangular Felt Tips came in cardboard packaging, with an accordion like inset tray. You can pull this out, for children to use, but it is not that easy to get back into the box and they will probably need an adult to help. The pens are triangular, which helps promote the correct grip, but they are chunky and quite long, so not really ideal for very small hands. My three year old nephew found these a little difficult to use (including taking the lids on and off, as they do have an audible ‘snap’) and, actually, it was my ten year old daughter who found them the easiest to use.That said, these are excellent quality, which is probably reflected in the price.The nibs are rounded and the colours bright and the lids fit on the end of the pen while you are using them. If your child tends to be a little forceful when colouring and presses the nib down too hard, do not worry. These pens have a retractable, spring nib. Press this down and it just comes back again, without breaking. This is perfect for children who do break felt tips easily.Overall, the ink quality and the nibs are the best things about these pens. Although I like triangular pens and pencils, these are a little chunky for small hands. The packaging is not great either, especially for the price. I would have liked a tin, perhaps, to keep the pens together. However, they were a big hit with my daughter, who can never have enough colouring pens, pencils or stationary generally.

very impressed with these pens. Even more impressed is my six-year-old daughter who (on occasion) struggles to hold conventional round pens and pencils correctly. I've purchased various other manufacturers' triangular pens and pencils and when she uses them (when) my daughter's tripod grip (have a Google) is spot on and she is much more adept and accurate with the triangular shape.Anyway; she absolutely adores these pens. They really put the ink out and quickly fill large colouring spaces (typical of young children's colouring books / shapes); with care it's possible to get a streak-free background wash.Of course one of the best features of these pens is the spring-loaded tip.Press as hard as you like (and my daughter does) and the tip will not be damaged ... when it reaches its tipping / pressure point the nib just retracts ... how clever and how obvious once someone has thought of it (well done Stabilo) .. and when the pressure's off the nib returns and the colouring can continue,Did I mention that the colours wash out at 30 degrees ... what a bonus if one's child is wearing nice clothes.So anything not to like? Wellllllll ... please can someone design a pen that reminds children (somehow) to put the cap back on the pen ...I try to monitor this but somehow I still find dried up pens because the lid has been left off (or not clicked on properly). Other than that I have to say these pens are really great at colouring in!

The packaging clearly indicates that these felt tip pens are for children. But if they did a different design for the card in the front of the transparent pack Stabilo could easily aim them at artists.Swan-Stabilo (the Swan bit is just referred to in the logo now, not in the name) are a German brand who have retained a sense of quality in their products. And it's nice to open this set of felt tips which are presented in a simple but effective wrapping. When you open them up four pens stick to one side of the pack and four stick to the other.You can easily arrange the pens methodically by colour, which might be a good test for your children to see if they are colour blind.Obviously it's not a scientific test but it might be insightful.It wasn't obvious from the packing what the nibs would be like despite the picture on the front. These are bigger than normal pens with a triangular cross section that makes it easy for little hands to hold them. But the picture on the front makes it look like they may be a more standard size. It turns out that the nibs are the same size as a Sharpie, so quite broad. They're good for colouring in big blocks of colour.But the main difference over a Sharpie is that the ink in these Stabilo pens is washable which means I guess that they're not really for adults. Because adults like to think everything they do is permanent and will live through the ages.

These pens really are very cleverly designed. At first glance, they have the familiar look of Stabilo pens. I use the grown-up fine liners and these are chunkier, triangular versions with the same recognisable white stripes. The colours are a nice selection - pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, brown and black. Whilst this isn't as wide a selection as you might get with a larger pack of pens, you will find that there aren't many things that can't be coloured in with this basic set. The triangular shape makes it easier for little hands to hold properly and the pens themselves give a lovely vibrant colour and have decently thick nibs to help younger children colour more evenly.Superwashable pens are also a great innovation in pens and we've been buying them for a few years now as my younger daughter had a habit of accidentally colouring in her clothes whilst colouring in in the car!However, there is much more to these pens than just nice pens - the secret weapon is a joy to behold! Retractable nibs. I can't count the number of pens that my children have destroyed, particularly my younger daughter, by colouring too intently and pushing the nibs into the pen or splaying the nib by being too forceful with her "dotting". The retractable nib makes these pens almost destructible!

The pens are part of a great range from stabilo, and we have previously had the Cappi pens before, where the lids are kept on a string and the pens are in a loop necklace. These pens come in a plastic pack with individual holes to slot each pen into. There are only eight felt tip pens in the pack, but a good selection of colours (the light pink is good for faces, but could there have been a darker pink too?).I loved that they are not round but are triangular, and so don't roll off table tops (great for travelling on planes, trains etc!!).These felt tip pens are washable and non toxic (standard for kids pens these days, though we haven't tested how good they are at washing out!!)They are easy to handle and have good coverage. The nib is a good size but is also able to outline an edge, which makes them suitable for young children as well as older brothers and sisters, and good for doing mindfulness drawings too.The real selling point of these pens is the spring loaded nib ... We have lost a tonne of cheaper pens by the youngest pushing too hard on the paper so that the fibre nib is pushed up the barrel. Very frustrating for the older child who then wants to use that colour and can't. Anyway, problem solved!!!

This wonderful set of felt tip pens are what you buy for your kids as a reward, or for yourself if you use them - they are remarkably good quality, and not the sort of thing you buy in the supermarket! The 14 pens are basically triangular in design, but with well rounded corners, so that they fit in the hand really well. The body of each pen is coloured the same as the ink, and the removable cap fastened on the other end of the pen securely when I use, so it can easily be replaced when you finish. The cap is round, but with a flat side so that if on the pen it stops it rolling off the desk. The bullet tips are very strong, and deliver a consistency of ink across the page - you can make the ink wider by pressing,but I would suggest that in most cases the top is engineered to deliver just about the right mount of ink. With a few unusual could, like a flesh colour and grey, there are the usual suspects too - black, blue, light blue, green, pale green, brown and pale brown, yellow, orange, red, purple and pink.Really good quality pens that if looked after will last and last - really good value.

I can find little to fault with these pens. The packaging is appealing and simple to open. The choice of colours is a good starting point for new artists. Drawing with them feels very comfortable - the ink flows well and the colour output on paper is vivid without blotting. As stated on the product overview, the pens themselves do feel light to handle, and the triangular shape makes them better to grip. The nibs are also big and chunky, for nice thick lines.While I dislike jamming pens forcefully onto the paper (it just feels wrong!), I tried it for the sake of testing out the spring-nib feature and it's very responsive. The nib retracts back into the pen and returns when the pen is raised from the paper.This is a handy feature for children who colour in a bit too enthusiastically. It only works if the pen is pushed onto the paper when held straight, while I tend to colour at an angle. But most kids colour holding the pen straight down, so this little addition will help lessen wear on their art equipment.

I ordered these for my own hobby/craft use, rather than for children, though it appears they’re primarily intended for youngsters.The main selling point is their retractable tips, which are good if your children customarily destroy tips by pressing too hard. The attached photos show how far the tip can be pressed in – it was fine again afterwards. I assume, however, that they will still dry out if the lids aren’t properly replaced, so don’t think that they’ll last forever.The other feature that parents will probably appreciate is the super washable ink, which is easy to remove from hands and (I assume) clothes, though I don’t know for how long this remains the case. Personally, I found this a bit annoying.I used these to mark some foam that I intended to cut but then, even though I left it a while, the ink kept coming off the foam onto my fingers. This could be useful if you only want temporary marking of something, but it did mean I got ink all over my hands, even if it did wash off easily.

STABILO Trio Scribbi Triangular Felt Tip Pen - Assorted Colours (Pack of 14)The pens.These are felt tip pens and come in a colourful presentation box.Quality.As expected at the price they are excellent quality and well made. The felt nibs are well sculptured and very strong – after three weeks of use they are still intact even though two four year olds have done their best to destroy them.The ink is non-toxic and very bright. The nibs are spring loaded so that they absorb punishment from little hands. The ink is water soluble and does wash out of clothes on a normal wash.Using.These two have been using these for the last three weeks and all the pens are still working perfectly.There is also an associated colouring app you can download and print designs from which can then be coloured in.Overall.These are expensive but they do last a long time and will put up with a lot of abuse. Also the ink lasts a long time so I suppose they are quite good value for money in the long run.
