To my mind, there is no modern substitute for a decent fountain pen. I used fountain pens at school and then, like most people, went for the convenience of ball-points after starting work. In recent times, I've reverted to fountain pens, and find them such a pleasure to use - it's very much a tactile experience, and the finish you get on your writing is far smoother and clearer than you'll ever achieve with your average Biro. Many fountain pens are also far more attractive and stylish than your cheap throw-away ball-points.So, I was eager to try out this pen from the well-established STABILO brand. I have to admit that as a middle-aged guy, and a traditionalist at heart, this wouldn't have been the style of pen I would immediately be drawn to. However, when I took it out of its wrapping, I could see the attraction it would hold for many. It's a modern design, brightly coloured, and sits nicely in the hand. I could imagine spending many an hour comfortably writing with this implement, because the body has been contoured to give the user a lovely, ergonomic grip. It's also nice to see that STABILO have gone for a medium nib which provides a smooth action on the paper (in my experience, fine nibs can be rather 'scratchy' in comparison). In addition, this takes standard refills, which are readily available, and can prove relatively inexpensive if bought in quantities of 10.So, yeah, this 'trendy' fountain pen almost does come up trumps. However, if I had one criticism it would be the price - it's presently being sold at £20.00, which is well above what I would normally pay for a fountain pen. For many years I have been happily using Parker Vector Fountain Pens (with a medium nib) and they presently cost less than half of this STABILO. In fact I can buy a Parker Vector (in a choice of seven colours) plus a pack of 10 'long' refills and still get change out of £12.50. I'll admit that this STABILO is marginally more comfortable to use, and is of a trendier design to suit a modern environment - so I guess it's a case of where your priorities lie when making your choice. Personally, I'll stick with my Parker Vector. Mind you, if I see one of these STABILO's on 'special offer' I may be tempted.....

***Update***when I received this pen, it was circa £20; it is now a little over £13 (Sept 2020) and even more value than ever....definitely highly recommended. It has been some years since I used a fountain pen but I had always loved them in my earlier days and had used them for many years....that was the older more traditional metal type such as Parker... Seeing this pen listed, I absolutely loved the colour range (I have Purist Blue/black and now desperately want the Berry :) ) but wasn't sure about the plastic element. Having now received the pen and tried it for writing, I am again in love with the fountain pen.Too often nowadays its very rare to physically write something...its all typing...and in my case quick writing with a biro whenever I have made quick notes etc!Due to this I found my handwriting being neglected...whenever I have used a fountain pen, the style of writing is different to that of a biro, makes me focus on my writing and I have to say, using this has put a flourish back into my writing, the curls have reappeared and my writing is more recognisable how it used to be.Writing should be a pleasure and this pen feels like a pleasure...it feels great in the hand and ergonomic (personally I have always had to have the cap on the end of the pen when writing as I don't like the feel of a shorter pen and my writing is better with a long pen).Although made with some kind of plastic, it is not a cheap feeling plastic and the word plastic doesn't do it justice as it feels such quality. The nib of course is stainless steel and is so smooth to write with...as I say it puts the pleasure back in handwriting. I haven't added images as they are included in the listing but this pen is amazing and I will now be writing again thanks to this. I have several Stabilo products and love them all. Highly recommended.

This range of fountain pens from Stabilo come in a variety of designer colour combinations and I received the 'Citrus Chilli' design to review which has a lovely turquoise coloured body with lemon coloured push on lid and a lemon coloured plastic pocket clip. It comes complete with one ink cartridge. The pen measures 20.5cm in length including lid and has a black rubbery ergonomic soft grip area between the nib and the body which makes for more comfortable writing … less likely to cramp.  I will add here that … this fountain pen is fairly chunky and might not be comfortable to hold for a young girl or boy or even for an adult female with smallish hands … Although I have found this pen verycomfortable to write with and I do have fairly small hands. This pen takes international standard sized ink cartridges. This fountain pen has a medium iridium metal nib which writes beautifully without that horrible scratchy feel that can often be the problem with fountain pens at the budget end of the market.  You need to insert the ink cartridge quite firmly and gently squeeze the cartridge to release the ink to the nib. Once the ink is flowing this pen writes very well and smoothly with no snagging, missing ink areas or blobs of ink.I have been using this fountain pen most days for the last couple of weeks and I'm really happy with it. This pen is easily as good as some of the more expensive pens on the market ... all I need now is some blotting paper.

I was a bit disconcerted by this pen when it arrived. At the price I expected it to look, well, pricey! Maybe this is what the kids want today. Good quality that looks cheap and therefore does not stand out. When I sought to use it, it was a different matter entirely. The pen as a pen is outstanding. One difficulty in the past has been ink pens leaking. Firstly there is a little transparent false cartridge to put back in if the pen needs to be carried without a cartridge - in luggage for instance. Great idea, v easy to implement, rarely done in the past. The fresh cartridge inserted with a perfect snug fit and no 'blobbing' onto the nib. The pen is a delight to hold, and makes use of the nib natural. The top is a click fit, a further contributor to leakage prevention, the historic scourge of 'fountain pens'. (NOTE - This is NOT a fountain pen, which were filled by suction from an ink bottle. It is a cartridge pen!)But - just a single small cartridge on a pen at this price point? Cheapskates. It is also well under the old standard size, so less ink too. Great for signing your name on documents in a stylish old-fashioned way. Actually, very good for a letter or an essay, but I see few embracing the look. IF one wants old-fashioned output, why use something that looks like it cost £1? (It probably did - to make.) Mainly suited to quirky graphic artist and PR types!

The modern two tone styling of this pen is an either love or hate thing. It is growing on me as I am more used to more traditional and therefore duller designs. It feels quite light and plastic in the hand and there is a seam running along the body of the pen where it has come out of the mould. The lid attaches firmly with a reassuring click, and posts on the rear when you are using the pen.In use I find it to be very comfortable. I have big hands but can hold this with ease. This is helped by the triangular area where your fingers go which has a flare at the end. It means that you can write with it for a long time without it becoming uncomfortable. The medium nib gives a decent line on the paper without scratching or catching like a fine nib can do. The ink flows well. The only issue I have is that this pen only comes with one very small cartridge. There is even an empty cartridge inside the body of the pen for some reason. I am sure that it would have not cost too much more to include another full cartridge, or to give you a large cartridge with the pen. Refills are not expensive but how about getting a decent one included for the price?Overall though this is a really good modern take on the traditional fountain pen which is comfortable to use writes very well.

This is a really nice fountain pen for one that's designed to be a basic/starter pen. It writes easily and smoothly from the very start, and feels very comfortable to hold - perfect for those trying out their first fountain pen. It takes small universal cartridges, which are easy to insert, and unlike most fountain pens, this one gives a satisfying click once you close it up again, so you don't tighten it too far.It just looks like a standard biro type pen until you take the lid off, which I quite like, as I've had a few light-fingered folk try to 'forget' to give me back my fancier fountain pens before! So this would be perfect if you like a fountain pen to use at work, but don't want to lose an expensive or fancy one.The only criticism I have is the ink in this pen - it's erasable, but what that really means is that it's quite thin and on some more porous types of paper, it will fade quite dramatically within a few hours. A small criticism as it's easy enough to put a better ink cartridge in the pen, and overall this is a great, well priced first fountain pen.

It's been many a year since I've used a fountain pen and I really liked using one again, they just seem nicer to write with for some reason. So this pen is a little on the thick side, but from what I remember most fountain pens are, so people with smaller hands might find it clunkier to use. However I had no issues and found it very comfortable. As to writing itself I found much better than the pens from my childhood. There are no pools of ink building up on the nib and on paper it was smooth to write. Honestly something about them just makes your penmanship appear better, at least in my head it does!So to the design it is rather modern, clean lines with black accents on a base colour. It's not really my style usually but I quite like it. It comes with a standard blue ink cartridge and once I get through that I'll probably switch to black. Being standard cartridge size means that replacements should be easy to get. For the brand and quality of the product I think it's worth the price and would recommend.

This reminded me of schooldays when we were obliged to use ink. Initially from an inkwell and then cartridges came in. My handwriting was atrocious and a fountain pen certainly improved its looks. I loved how this started writing straight away. I recall having to shake the nib a few times in the olden days or squeezing the cartridge, so this was a pleasant surprise.Fountain pens are associated with classy writing and this does look quite 'posh'. The ink flows freely. It is lovely to hold with a nice texture. A lot of though has gone into the design of this pen. It may not look posh, being some kind of brightly coloured plastic but my handwriting has suddenly transformed into the epitome ofelegance and style. This is great for kids wanting to enjoy the pleasures of handwriting.

The fountain pen arrives in sturdy packaging with content visible inside. Opening the package is easy, I opened the fountain pen and took out the empty ink cartridge and inserted the new full cartridge this comes with. The ink flows straight-away, I liked the way the fountain pen handles and how this felt in the hand. Ensure the nib end is facing the surface you with on. I liked the flow and the results this pen produced and think fountain pens are a goof alternative to ball point pens. I do use both. I like the overall design, ergonomic shape how this fits the hand and overall the nice quality of this quite nice fountain pen.I would be pleased to receive this or spend the money on this and thinks this is a very good buy if you are considering this.

The thing I really like about this pen is the shaped barrel where it's held by the fingers. The three flattish areas make it so much easier to hold and makes writing a pleasure. I put the ink cartridge in and it started writing immediately, from past experience this isn't always the case with other pens I've used. The Stabilo folk have designed a trendy looking pen with six colour choices, I was sent the citrus chill which looks a bit garish because of the yellow cap and greenish silver barrel but there are three options that offer the same colour cap and barrel. A couple of critical points: I thought it was a bit expensive compared to other fountain pens on the market and the ink cartridgethat came in the pack could have been the larger size.

I used to use a fountain pen at school all the time and then just abandoned them when I started university and computers took over.Revisiting this bit of nostalgia I can see the difference it makes with my handwriting - letters seem to flow nicer and there is no scrawl. The pen itself is lovely to hold; is lovely and lightweight and thick enough to grasp comfortably. I also really like the contrasting blue and yellow. The ink cartridge was easy to insert and with a gentle squeeze the ink worked its way down the nib. There has been no ink blotches or leakages and I have used it most days.I don't think £19.99 is too expensive for a pen that writes so nicely, feels so comfortable and can be refilled countless times.

If you find that you lose your grip when using fountain pens, this could be quite a good solution. The angled grip means that you keep the nib orientated to the correct position do your writing remains smooth and you'll not cut through the paper. The pen comes with a single disposable blue ink cartridge which filled the reservoir quickly enough to make writing almost immediately possible. Ink flow is clean and the nib is on the smaller side of the medium range. The barrel is brightly coloured and feels very cheap and plasticky but it might be a good starter pen for people who want to learn how to hold and control a fountain pen for general writing, before eventually moving onto something more expensive.

This lovely pen arrives in the package as seen. Easy to get into, not much wasteful packaging. So far so good,The pen itself is a very jazzy lime green kind of colour, and is nicely made.No trouble putting in the ink cartridge, and within a few seconds, your'e ready to write.I don't know what it is, but as soon as I get a real ink pen like this, my writing seems to improve. The ink flows beautifully, and it writes like a dream. I have written a lot with this, and the ink cartridge is still going strong.I knocked off a star, because I think that when paying very nearly £20 for a pen, they could at least throw in a couple of spare ink cartridges, so value for money....not so good.

My nine-year-old daughter had been begging me for a fountain pen since learning how to use one at school and this STABILO is absolutely ideal for her. With a modern colour scheme (citrus chill!) and sleek design, it has a 0.5mm tip, so isn't too spidery or narrow to get a great ink flow that's ideal for everyday use.The cartridges are cheap and easy to replace, and after a week of use I haven't seen any ink blots or spillages, despite being used regularly by a child under the age of ten for her schoolwork. The current price (around £20) seems steep, but the quality is great and we have no complaints about this pen at all.

I didn't have very high hopes for this fountain pen but I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it out. I don't use a pen very often these days when using the keyboard/Dragon or texting, so this gave me a chance to try one out. This looks OK and quite funky. It takes cartridges and comes with one. The nib is nice and fairly fine and the ink glides nicely across the paper and isn't scratchy. I remember using expensive pens in the past and they were very scratchy. The ink flows out well and it makes me want to do swirls and fancy writing!Although it seems to be basic it actually works well and the end result is very good.
