You could be forgiven for thinking that Space Colony is just another SIM game; the cover of the box does have similarities with certain EA products, but in this case, I for one, shall look no further as the two games have a distinctly different vibe to them.... oh and one of them is set on other worlds with aliens and laser beams and all sorts of lovely stuff. When released back in 2003(ish) Space Colony received mix reviews and had to compete with a plethora of other SIMS type games marching on the High Street trying to persuade the 'God-Gamer' to micromanage the lifestyles of the banal and insipid. In many ways, Space Colony was over-looked and, despite being developed and produced by the likes of Gathering,Firefly and Take 2 Interactive it never really got an awful lot of love from the average gamer, which is something of a shame, and let me tell you why (in my opinion, of course...).Space Colony comes from the same production companies as the Stronghold series and shows the same kind of finish and polish with a manual which has had a fair bit of thought put in to it for those that are absolutely fresh off the bus with this kind of game (64 pages of full colour pages, for starters). The premise of the game is simple: Blackwater Industries, an intergalactic company with the moral flexibility and general compassion for its employees reminiscent of a psychopath's chainsaw, has a chain of colonies dotted around the galaxy, each tasked with a different purpose ranging from tourist venue to intensive mining facility, sends out a selection of individuals to sort out the problems the colonies seem to have or to produce enough money / minerals / pharmaceuticals etc. to make it worth Blackwater Industry's while.Enter the Space Cadets: predominantly, the player will be following the well-rounded Venus Jones who happens to be very good at her job and is fairly easy to placate. After that, there's her good freidn Stig who's the local mining expert and bug-splatter, Dean the medical officer (who is incredibly useful on the more difficult missions) and Tami... who's... well... she's got a good heart. Add to that another 16 characters, each with their own idiosyncracies and skill-sets.It's fair to say that any given Colony can become a lively place, to say the least. The game offers a campaign mode which, after basic training, branches off in to two seperate paths - one economical and one that is more perilous and combative. It also has a generic sandbox mode with some basic worlds in which to start a colony with no specific goals or objectives - simply to make the place work. There is a challenges mode whereby a planet with a very specific set of characteristics, some scripted, some incidental, is the setting and a selection of objectives will need to be achieved, sometimes within a specific time-frame.And if that's not enough, then you have the Editor Tool kit IN THE GAME! Not a tacked on addition, but actually part of the program itself - almost as if they knew that they were going to have a one-shot game and the developpers had thought 'well, if it gets a community, they may as well have worlds to pass around to one another.' and lo, they did it. Simple to use, complex to master but with enough fiddling you can, in time, create a vast number of scenarios that can lead from one mission to another, saving the properties of the previous mission and bringing them in to play for the next.Add to this alien viruses, a variety of different alien creatures, a solution for (nearly) every problem and a remarkably stable game engine environment and you have a winning combination (unlike some EA games I'd care to mention...).So why have I given it 4 stars in Fun if it's so darned well thought out?Well, it's a matter of opinion, again, and in some cases it's about micro-managing and balancing certain aspects of the game. Each of your characters has a relationship with all of the others on base, the better they get along with one another the better they work with each other... or if they particularly don't get on, the more likely they are to kick off and get in to a fight... and this is a CONSTANT task. It's easy enough to get folk to sit down and become friends (less so to get them in to actual relationships, though it is entirely possible and an enjoyable challenge to so, at times), just maintaining the relationships whilst in the midsts of a crisis can be somewhat demanding and may put off some players. In conclusion, this game is a bargain for the societal simulator enthusiast, if not for any other reason than it's simply different to all the others. And to those that have not played anything of this kind before it's got quite a range for the new-comer to get stuck in to. Due to its versatility, sturdiness and replayability I'm marking this one highly because it's not pretending to be something its not and does it with a fresh and reasonable sense of humour.8 out of 10... and hey, I actually didn't want to vent ANY of the characters out of an airlock, no matter how much of a jerk they were... GREG! ;)

I bought the game last Friday and havn't stopped playing it since. Its very addictive. The main character is Venus who works for Blackwater Industries. She gets assigned to various worlds with other colonists to either extract minerals, fight aliens or build hotels. There is an easy to learn tutorial and various missions and galactic mode and a very good map and campaign editor which is very simple to use.The graphics are good but its a shame you can't zoom in or out which I find helps if you are building or if you want to see your little people in more detail. You do need a fast processor to run this game (as with most games nowadays). Its ok at the beginning but if you play a large map or there are many characters in the game, especially aliens, the pc tends to slow down a bit. My processor speed is 450 mhz. The game recommends 800 mhz or more. I can play the game but it does slow down in large maps so if you processor speed is less than mine I wouldn't bother. There are some great characters in the game from various countries who have all their own identities, likes, dislikes etc. The voice over for these have been well thought out and some of come out with hilarious comments and thoughts. You can build various items for food, entertainment, health, military, engineering, etc etc. Too many to mention here but all I can say is that its a great game, well thought out, entertaining with many hours of fun.

I've had this game for the past few years. I spotted this one day with it's holographic cover and cheap £4 pricing, liked the look of it & decided to give it a go. I was not disappointed at all.I found this to be one of the best games I've ever had....seriously! (And I don't like many strategy games much past AOE)The graphics may seem a tad outdated by todays standards, but, that's part of the whole charm of it. It goes towards making it funny to watch and makes it easy on the eyes. The game play itself is about as basic as you can get with a strategy and has a very leisurely pace, but, the added twist of the characters having conflicting personalities gives it a twist and even more humour. The missions are good and the sandbox mode is one of the best I've played. For a small price you get a great game that's so addictive, it will win you over in no time. It truly is a hidden gem. Give it a go......

The producers of this have thought long and hard and come up with an excellent game, which mixes personality management, action and a unique atmosphere. You set up a colony on one of the several planets on offer and go about stripping it of all its resouces. Each planet is different- some have aliens on...some don't! I like the open endedness about it, and you can do pretty much what you want. Look out for Nailer- he has to eat and drink every 2 minutes! The characters are great- although I find Slim a bit annoying for some reason- he's just lazy.I like games that mix simulation, adventure, strategy and atmosphere. This does that- and it doesn't take long to load either! It is a sort of 'sims in space'but it offers it's own unique merits too, and in some ways better. If you like The Sims- you will love this!

I ADORE this game!! It came a day earlier than the date quoted to me so Im thrilled! The game is a time management/strategy game and is great for people who like a giggle (some of the things they say are funny). It was ordered as a great quality, but there are several scratches that cause it to skip and repeat very often. The order said it came with a book, but I presume that meant the little thing that comes inside the case. Good thing I have the strategy guide (not like I need it that bad).Highly recommended for those who like problem solving and a bit of sand boxing. You will need to check the post for what it will run on. Dont even try on Windows 10. Im on 7 and it seems to be fine.

If you like the Sims, you'll probably like this too. I've only played once, as I had trouble loading it at first. But once that got sorted, it was interesting to start colonising a new planet and start my sims working in outer space. So far, the characters appear to be pre-set, i.e. you can't custom-build-your-own like you can on some of the Sims games. But they all have vastly differing personalities/appearances/likes and dislikes, so there's plenty of variety to keep you going. My personal faves being the two punky girls(!)I have the feeling I've only scratched the surface of what this game has to offer, but on first impressions it's definitely a keeper.

When I first installed this game I thought, Umm it's the Sims in Space, which isn't too bad. But it takes the best elements of the sims and adds some real time strategy into the mix. Add all of this to the SciFi elements of the game and it ends up being pretty good. After you've finished the training missions you get to choose whether you want to follow the Military missions or the Civilian ones - bepending on which type of player you are it will suit you.A good game, but with a few weaknesses - but they aren't major enough for me to stress them as part of a review.

This game is highly additive just like The Sims......With this game you have to keep a group of neurotic Sims happy in space, after all they don't really want to be there and some are more interested in food, entertainment and shopping then mining for Iron or Silicone....Excellent game with a few opitions on game play to keep you amused....a must have for any Sim gamer.

When I saw this I was sceptical-surely it was just The Sims (which I love) on a different planet?? No way. With unique characters and planets, and all sorts of environments, situations and strategies, Space Colony is an astronomical (in both ways) game which will get you hooked within the first two minsutes. Sims fans, you MUST get this-well worth the money.

Great game - bought on a whim. Had not played for 10 years, but still enjoyable even after all this time as faster processing chips means that the game can be played as it should have been!
