Purchased this lens to go with my Sony NEX-5RL as the 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 lens that came with it just couldn't get up and personal with your subjects, even when using manual mode.At first I was a little hesitant about splashing out quite a bit of money on another lens, however I wanted those close-up shots and the reviews had been very positive, so I went for it and I've gotta say this is the best thing I've purchased for my camera so far!I noticed straight away the benefits of having this lens, it allowed me to automatically focus on subjects much closer than the 16mm allowed me too, and even more so through manual control for focusing exactly where you want it,with sharp results.Though the description suggests this lens is good for "Close-ups, Insects/plants & jewellery", it doesn't limit it to just these as I've taken some decent scenic shots and photos of my friends too.One thing I almost forgot to mention is that this lens supports 49mm filters (my original lens was 40.5, so I had to repurchase the different size).► I've included a video which shows an unboxing and photo examples, but please bare in mind I had to upload it in 360p quality as 720p made the video exceed the 100MB video limit... So the photo quality wont be at it's highest.

Takes some really nice macro images if you have the patience for it. You really need to use a tripod to get the best results and this can be difficult when trying to photograph insects or anything that’s close to the ground. The lack of stabilisation means things have to be very still or the results will be blurry. Taking photos of flowers when they are moving in the wind leads to blurry pictures. So like I say you need patience to get good results. You can get the lens really close to your subject with this lens and it still focuses but the results do get quite soft at the edges of your subject. It can only seem to focus on the middle of the object at close range. This is perhaps just the way any lens works at this range,I’m not an expert on lenses. It works quite well as a general purpose lens as well. I’ve taken some good pictures of the kids in the garden for example. It’s really small and lightweight so a good addition to your kit. It’s an excellent lens considering the price.

This lens could easily be over looked by those seeking a fast lens or those requiring image stabilisation or confused by its macro capabilities. But let me in on a well kept secret; this lens is awesome.First off the f3.5 might seem a little on the slow side but consider that this is usual territory for lenes of this price range. Additionally, if you are using the capabilities of macro side then you usually have to stop down the lens in any case (this is essential with all macro photograhy). But why stop at just its macro trick. This lens is fully capable of taking some superbly sharp general photographs. Infact there are lab reports detailing it's fantastic resolution abilities. But as to be expected Pros would counter with its low corner sharpness. For me, this has not been an issue.Check out Flickr if you remain to be convinced. I for one am still enchanted by this gem.

This is a lovely macro lens for the Sony Nex system. It takes superb macro pictures which are lovely and sharp in the centre. It can soften slightly towards the edges.Focus is quiet ( and for a macro lens) reasonably quick. 30mm is short for a macro but also wider than normal, providing you can get close to your subject you can take remarkable shots. There is no image stabilisation in this lens but being small and light it is easy to hand hold.Price wise no other macro lens can come close.Cons? Well as it is a macro it is a wee bit slow to focus compared to an ordinary prime lens and while it will take general shots and portraits its doe not excel at these - macro is where it shines.

As a macro lens it is very good, however you have to get close to the object, however all other native E-mount macros cost a lot more. This lens is not stabilised so if your not steady you may find a mono or tripod useful.Where the 30 mm may not be perfect for Macro use, it doubles up as a nice 30mm Prime where on an APS-C camera such as the NEX 3/5/7 or Alpha 5000/6000 this equates to 45 mm which is a good focal length for "walking around"For the price you can not complain and with £30.00 cash back atm is even betterBoth photos were taking on the Alpha 5000 camera, one macro, one a normal shot

This lens is an excellent addition to your e-mount lens collection. Can take beautiful ultra close-up pictures and videos with precise auto and manual focusing. It provides a very shallow depth of field isolating a minute plane of focus whilst up as close as you can go to your subject, which almost touches your lens glass!!! Great buy for art enthusiasts and filmmakers alike. Just don't accidentally squash the insects when you get in close!!! Andreas

I've gathered some lovely shots with this awesome lens, as I'm a big fan of insect photography, its probably best for 'still' shots, but if your patient you will capture that little bugs face ;-) i suppose its not ideal for insects because the autofocus can sometimes take its time, but like i said, i am patient, and the quality that this lens can produce is superb.I have 6 lenses for the Sony NEX 5 and this one gets a lot of use, love it.

I have taken a few great shots with this little guy. I initially felt bad for making the purchase but the macro shots you get with this is just amazing. Although it is F 3.5, for macro you need to go at least F8-11 for any decent shots. The only issue i have had with this is 30mm (45mm in 35mm equivalent) is not sufficient if you want to take any insect shots. The alternative being 90mm cost £900+ so i guess this will have to do.

For the money this macro is not that bad only thing it does suffer from is very slow auto focus especially when using it as a macro. Picture quality is pretty good and the sharps are not to bad a slight vignette on the edge but on the whole recommendable for a lens of the cost. Will say use it on manual unless you are going to use it for portraits or landscapes as even for it's focal range its sluggish.

When compared with my old Canon 100 macro lens this one is dwarf. It is a little shorter than the kit lens. Decently sharp even wide open. The only real downside is the horrible manual focus. Like the kit lens it can pretty much only be used as an auto focus lens.If you want a macro lens that matches the size and weight of the nex cameras you can do no better. Buy with confidence.

Good lens for the money yielding good macro results close up and building up on the Sony Nex system range making this the best Mirrorless system out there; if you compare the no of good cameras and lenses against competitors like M/43, Canon and Nikon who were complacent and late to the market C&N thus missing the boat and difficult for these 2 win any sizable market

I don’t know how to use a Macro Lens, I even started taking photos using the wrong settings on the camera and only realised at the end of the day. A catastrophe.., I was sure the photos would be completely ruined. They were brilliant. I managed to get so close and take photos of flowers and insects like never before, with the wrong settings. Amazing value for money.

I have bought many lens but this is one of my favourites. It is very sharp, light but well built and a good standard focal length. The macro capability is what makes it special. Only disadvantage small aperture but with sensors handling high ISO values now not a problem. Also macro needs small apertures for depth of field. Also GREAT value

Really sharp lens for the money. F/3.5 isn't an issue for macro. It's light when matched with my a6000 making it great for hand holding out stretch when trying to catch that perfect, in focus insect. AF is incredibly quick but for 1/1 macro you have to get really close.

Fantastic I read many reviews on this lens so was quite excited waiting for the lens to arrive. It's just like everybody said in the reviews a extremely light weight lens and a very good little macro lens.I would highly recommend to my friends.x
