Short Review:Excellent lens, great value for money; its 2 weaknesses are IS performance and AF in live view mode.Long Review:An excellent all rounder. It may not be the sharpest lens, and I wish it would open to at least f/5.6 at the telephoto end, but the many pluses of this lens make its few shortcomings neglegible. Straight out of the box, I only needed to dial in +2 microadjustment steps at the tele end on my 70D. Construction is robust, weight and dimensions are very well contained, zoom ring is wide, grippy and has just the right amount of tension - the zoom lock is unnecessary (at least for now), and just over a third of a turn makes the lens go from wide to telephoto,so you can zoom in and out quickly in one action. The focus ring is wide enough, although for manual focus the travel is too short making it somewhat difficult to achieve perfect focus. The focus motor is perhaps the weakest point of this lens - there is no full time manual override, although it is quick to focus even in below average lighting on my 70D and surprisingly silent (though audible in videos). The one problem I have encountered is that focusing hunts quite a bit when the lens is used in live view mode, but is very fast and accurate with the AF system. As for image quality, I can sum it up as very good throughout the zoom range. Sharpness is fine wide open, gets even better in general if you stop it down a bit. I have not found CA to be a problem at any focal length, and distortion is no worse than any of my other lenses from Canon, Sigma, Tokina and Tamron. Bokeh is perfectly circular (though difficult to achieve on a lens like this). The other weakness is image stabilization, which while effective, is not as good Canon's, and surprisingly less effective than IS on my other Sigma lens, the 120-400mm (which is significantly older and with a longer telephoto end). This is also more annoying because with an aperture of f/6.3 at the tele end, IS performance becomes more critical. Still overall I am very happy with this lens.

Five Stars because is the best at being what it is. Yes it's a Superzoom and the extensive zoom range is always going to compromise the image slightly. It is the jack of all focal lengths and the master of none (although pretty damn good, especially mid-range). I've had many Canon EOS DSLRS over the years; 350, 500, 650, 7D, 7D MKII and many lenses. For specialist photography a specialist lens is a must. For general do-anything photography this lens is king. Walk about with this lens attached and the photo opportunities abound. This lens extends the limitations with wide landscape at 18mm, close-up (almost macro), through mid-range portrait lengths 30mm-10mm and out to 300mm!!for zoomed out action for wildlife and sports. And all of this at your fingertips within in one single lens! Makes for a great day out. If you grab a RAW image along with the JPEG, then it there is a image that you particularly like then it can be fine-tune tweaked into superb quality using Adobe PS or Lightroom or similar software. The build quality is superb for the cost. I have lenses that cost twice this price that are not as well constructed. The OS (optical image stabilisation is nothing short of awesome!) and the lens comes inclusive with a petal shaped hood. Fine-focus tweaking and firmware updates can be applied by using the Sigma USB-Lens-Dock (sold separately). UI'm using this lens on a Canon EOS 7D MK II and a Canon EOS 100D and it is superb! Real value for money and it makes walk-about/travel photography some much fun. Brilliant!

Admittedly, I purchased mine for £275 from Amazon warehouse so got it for quite a good price. The lens is very well made, smooth to operate, feels very robust and takes great photos. It also comes with a slim hood that you don't really notice when it's on the lens. It's important to remember that this is an all-round lens so there will be some things people won't like. Towards 300mm you get slight vignetting but is easy to fix in Lightroom using the lens profile correction tool. The lens also has some chromatic aberration in bright light but again, can be remedied in Lightroom. The manual focus ring only rotates about a third, so doesnt really give you much control. These things don't really bother me but it's worth mentioning. In my opinion, this lens is a great addition to any kit. It's a lot better than the stock 18-55mm lenses that usually come with canon cameras- so in that respect, you can't go wrong really. This is the lens I use most of the time for its practicality. It allows me to take photos around the city and snap wildlife photos quickly as there's not the need to keep changing lenses all the time. Another thing I really like is the macro facility. You can zoom in to 300mm and focus on something that's approx. 40cm away and take some stunning close up shots of insects.A great addition.

The Sigma 18-300mm lens really suits my needs for capturing the action at 4x4 events. The limited time available to snap the action at the right moment plus the fact that I am also participating, together with the muddy, slippery conditions and at times extreme terrain are not conducive to carrying & swapping round multiple lenses. This is a great compromise - when something worth shooting is going on, I can leap out of my Jeep compose the shot, shoot, and be back on my way with no faffing. The big zoom range/versatility means I can frame the shot as required without having to move away from my own vehicle - which is often not an option. The lense is well constructed, firm and lighter than others of this spec that I have tried. Obviously there is a compromise with having such a large focal range it is more than made up for by sheer convenience. Many of the shots taken using this lense get published - so the quality is more than acceptable for my needs. Examples shots attached.

Shopped around for a Lens that hada wide and zoom quality. The Sigma is stylish and not too heavy - good quality and well made. The lens as you turn it can be a little harder to turn but maybe being new...?I had a LOT of problems with Amazon though, The first lens I bought was on offer with Sigma giving a free close up lens if you claimed. I submitted the claim to be told by Sigma that lens wa sa GRAY IMPORT!!! Amazon did admit this and arranged the lens to be returned abd a new one sent (which was checked by Sigma and okay) BUT after when I complained to Amazon they were less than helpful evemn denying any wrong-doing - good job I had the emails from SIGNA and the online amazon transcript!!!So if you buy its a good idea to check with the makers that your lens is okay - the serial number is all you need and they can check it.

I have a Canon 5D which uses Canon EF lenses. I also have a Canon 7D which uses Canon EF and EF-S lenses. This Sigma lens would seem to be the same as an EF-S type of Lens. It does fit physically and operate on the 5D which is a full frame camera but the picture taken is a bit like looking through a telescope. By that I mean it is a circle in the middle of a black square as shown in picture.Having pointed that out I must say that I am delighted with the lens which I purchased to use on my 7D. It is very light and versatile and easy to use. It is probably not the superb quality of Canon lenses but unless you are a real expert you will be very happy with it. It is much cheaper than a Canon and excellent value for money.Just don't use it on a full frame camera.

Very impressed with this lens. Originally I bought 'Tamron AF 16-300 mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Macro Lens for Canon Camera' - and this is definitely a good lens - but I saw other reviews that seemed to indicate that the Sigma lens was better. I took a risk and bought the Sigma 18-300 lens from Amazon. This is a seriously good lens. I always process my images using DXO before final adjustment and this automatically applies adjustments for any lens issues.I strongly recommend this lens. It is a great compromise and allows you to take just one lens for a full days shooting in varied lighting conditions.I did note that various sites mentioned that this lens is not 100% waterproof - but this has not caused me any issues.

Previously on a Canon crop sensor DSLR I have used a Tamron 16-300 which I loved. This time round based on score in the Photo Plus Canon magazine went for the Sigma 18-300. Ok you loose a little by not going to 16mm, however I believe the optics are better, pin shel and the build quality and feel are better and yet at better price.Auto focu is much much quicker and quieter and whereas I had issues with the Tamron not working well in live view this works really quickly. It’s quite a lump of kit but for travel and general work means I can take only this lens or combine it with a nifty fifty. Prime.

Good quality build, lens has the latest firmware so didn't need to update it with the dock, compared to other lenses seems a bit stiff when adjusting the lens from 18-300 maybe it will improve with use. Big downside is that even from Amazon themselves the product doesn't seems to have been sourced through Sigma UK and so the 3 year extended warranty isn't available nor the free macro lens. Amazon would only say they sourced genuine products so most likely European sourced. WEX Photography supply the Sigma UK supplied lens for £336 but found out after my lens arrived

While this lens is advertised as an 18-300mm lens, it does fall short when comparing to a Canon 75-300mm lens. At maximum zoom, this lens appears to be in the region of 250 mm on the Canon. Adding the TC-1401 to the setup, while it means losing autofocus when using the viewfinder, brings the Sigma up to par with the Canon, but you lose being able to go down to 18mm. So far as actual image quality goes, I can't complain, and is on par, if not better than the Canon. It's certainly not a light lense, but while it is heavier than the Canon, it feels much more robust.

This is a very good all round lens. If you need to travel light with just one lens, then this lens gives a greater range and flexibility than most other lenses. Performance is very good, but there are a few limitations as you would expect with a zoom lens of this range. I find it produces very acceptable results in most conditions . The only fault I have found is the lens hood. It's fit is very poor and loose on the lens, making it too easy for it to accidentally rotate or even fall off, so handle it carefully. Overall I would recommend this lens.

15.6.2016

For such a wide range of focal lengths, there is bound to be a compromise but overall the image quality is high.Autofocus which is aided by HSM is fast and the optical stabiliser ensures sharp pictures even at slow shutter speeds. Some photographers place too much emphasis on picture quality and insist on using prime lenses but they don't realise that for moving subjects,a zoom lens is a necessity. If you take the price, convenience and the above specifications into account, this is a remarkable lens.

I bought this lens to replace my Tamron 18 -200 mm lens which although a reasonably good lens in bright conditions has its limitations. I have taken a number of shots with this lens and the quality has exceeded my expectations and also beats my Canon 18 - 200 mm. The lens itself is well built and feels sturdy but not too heavy. There seems to be very little colour fringing and only some limited distortion (which is easily fixed in photoshop or lightroom). Well done Sigma!!!

6.1.2017

This is an excellent lens. There are some slight issues with some very minor barrel distortion and soft corners but overall this has excellent center sharpness consistent through the zoom range. The image stabilization is excellent for those long shots. The build quality is by far better than anything I have used before. Its quite heavy but solid. The MF/AF, Lock & OS switches are solid and overall its a very impressive lens. Very happy with my purchase.

29.3.2016

i purchased this lens knowing full that it would have limitations over the more expensive lenses. it has however been a very versatile and usable lens. when ever i am out going to work or out for a stroll this is attached to my camera. when i am going out for some serious shots i still take it along, albeit in my bag. Well worth the money, as long as you remember and accept its limitations.I have enclosed a shot taken at 18mm Crop sensor 28mm.
