Fountain pens with fine italic nibs aren't easy to find unless you pay humungous amounts for a Parker, or Cross pen. I use a fountain pen all the time and after losing a favourite pen some years ago, I moved to Sheaffer. This new range of pens isn't up there with the best or most expensive - but that's quite OK as they are still superb value and work faultlessly. I've fitted mine with the piston converter which makes them even better. As a bonus, if you have an old style Sheaffer, the converter doesn't quite fit inside the outer barrel, but if you carefully cut off the upper segment of the 'turner', down to the first part where it broadens out,it then fits without hassle.I repeat - and in deliberate opposition to those who have tried to rubbish these pens with their 1 star reviews - for the money you get a thoroughly excellent and reliable pen which writes smoothly. If you want really top quality then pay a top price. For everyday use, these new Sheaffers are unbeatable if you want an italic nib.As my photo shows, I also have the same model with a medium nib. This is as good, but my preference is for the fine which is what I'd suggest you try first unless you actually go in for calligraphy, in which case the broad is probably an excellent buy . . . but that's just a guess as I've not tried one and base that opinion on my experience of the fine.

I bought this after visiting amazon looking for ink refills for a Sheaffer Calligraphy kit I bought 15 years ago and which I use for writing cards on Birthdays and at Christmas. A pack of ten refill cartridges would have cost me £10 while I got this whole set for £9.99. This set contains twenty refill cartridges (which is what I was looking for) as well as three pens, an instruction book and a small pad of paper, so I effectively got the three pens and the paper and ten extra cartridges for free. What's not to like. For a beginner this would be an ideal set to try out calligraphy to see if you would like it before committing maybe more money and starting off a new hobby.The pens are not great quality but they do feel nice in my hand and the nibs seem to write well. The nib sizes are roughly 1mm, 2mm and 3mm italic nibs. A tip when you throw away the packaging - there are ten cartridges on the front of the packaging and ten more on the back where you can't see them.

I wanted to get back into calligraphy and writing with a fountain pen. So after spending the good part of the day, decided on this one partly because it was cheap and I have never had a problem with Sheaffer pens.Loved the colour (so no one at work can walk off with it - colour would stick out!), I struggled a couple of minutes to put the cartridge in and get the ink flowing. I found the pen not heavy to write with especially as I press down quite heavy when using a ballpoint. I thought the medium nib was thick compared to other medium nibs I've used in the past.Because I have fallen in love with this one, I decided to get the fine nib and yes I know it would have been cheaper to buy them in a set rather than separately but they're here now.One thing I will mention,I find when I'm using the pen with the black ink, it scratches, but my other pen with the blue ink writes smoothly.Overall I'm pleased with my purchases.

Inexpensive but smooth and a delight to use! My previous fountain pen was a very expensive Parker Centenniel that I have used for many years, but is now retired through age concerns, but is almost equalled by this excellent Shaeffer. That is why I've already purchased another 3 or 4 to make sure I'm never without one, wherever I'm working.

Brilliant!! Great set, easy to use and refill.plenty of ink (20 refills various colours).includes excellent book with tips and different font examples, history and posture positions + advice for left handed people. All so included is a practice pad.

I bought this as a present, so I am just going on looks. It seemed good value for money and was an attractive lime green colour. The recipient was very pleased with it. Now I am considering buying another for myself.

They write very well, however they have holes in the sides which are uncomfortable when held, in turn it makes them difficult to hold and use I wouldn't suggest them for beginners for that reason.

Really impressed with this set. When I opened the box, there were extra cartridges, a calligraphy for beginners book and also a booklet of tracing paper. Hopefully it writes well too!
