I ordered the Macintosh version from Amazon last week, and it arrived, and I have been playing it since! What can I say? It's superb! Runs well on my 20" 2.4ghz 3GB RAM iMac with a basic ATI Radeon HD2400 128MB Vram card - and is flawless. Hasn't crashed once, is slick and smooth!Includes Barbarian Invasion and is thus a bargain price! As for the game itself, one can play it strictly on a strategic 'map' level, where you move units around a la Civilisation, or you can play it with strategic as well as tactical elements so that you're able to play every battle, zoom in and out, control individual units, and command the battlefield. The game is excellent, probably the best of its type on the Macintosh, the level of detail is fantastic, troops can rout, or beserk, you can deploy them in a number of ways, and use your skills as a battlefield commander to try different strategies, using a multitude of unit types including cavalry, ballistas and catapults. The warfare ranges from besieging forts, taking pallisades, storming buildings, to battle on the planes involving cavalry and fast skirmish units. You are able to play individual historical battles and create your own, along with the Barbarian Invasion options for different more later unit types and thus a more complex battlefield. The strategic game, if one plays it solely is also great, engrossing and gives great satisfaction when one wins it!All in all, for lovers of strategy games a la civilisation, tactical battlefield/wargames, history buffs, fans of Close Combat games, and blood thirsty tyrant wannabe's alike!Excellent graphics and detail, in men, armour, buildings, forts, and landscapes, the sound too is excellent with battle cries, commands, animal noises, clash of steel and fire! All in all 10/10 one of the best games I've ever played!

This is an excellent port over to the Mac. The game runs seamlessly on my 2010 MacBook Pro (2.4 Ghz, 4GB memory with Snow Leopard). None of the problems listed in other reviews happen on my machine. The graphics are very good although I usually have the camera high up over the battlefield anyway when playing. When you do zoom in for the smaller battles the graphics are very well done. From a true wargaming point of view perhaps the units could be more varied in their colours (some of the Roman infantry units look remarkably similar) but this is being quite picky. For sheer enjoyment it really delivers. The tactical element is strong with unit placement important in order to win battles.Occasionally the AI is quite stupid (sending out lone cavalry units to attack an army) but other times quite sneaky in the way it ably uses other cavalry to hit your archer units and skirmishers. The Imperial Campaign contains a number of good siege battles. I don't usually like sieges but in Rome Total War they are nicely done and it is easy to move troops and towers around. The tension rises as you try to storm the city after taking casualties with just a handful of troops! There are a large number of factions with assorted units such as elephants, pigs, cataphracts, chariots and many others. On the GameRanger site you can play online and it is great fun.I have just started Barbarian Invasion. It is not on the RTW main menu, but if you click on the Feral menu options that pop up (choose 'about') when you click on the icon to start the game you can play Barbarian Invasion. Some people have had problems finding this.In short, well worth buying.

Having thoroughly enjoyed this game on PC it was the one game I hoped one day would be produced for mac. I ordered it June '09 and waited patiently while one release date after another came and went...and now it has arrived. I have played for about 2 hours and the port to mac appears seemless and the game runs perfectly on an intel imac 2.8GHz 4GB Ram - But beware it does not run on non-intel macs. Slightly surprised at the optimum resolution settings which are not set at 1920x1200 which is the display res for the 24" screen there'll be a technical reason for that no doubt - but it looks ok. The controls are pretty much the same as the PC version and I found no dificulty with in-game controls.Forthose not familiar with the total war series these are the best real time strategy games I've ever seen - combining a nice level of politics, diplomacy and battle tactics with lovely(although now looking just a little dated) graphics - more sophisticated than the average game with an historical backdrop that's interesting but might give a serious historian the hump (its's only a game after all) but there's no silly gimmickery here to distract you from your attempts to rule the world. Although an old(ish) game now it holds its own and has a lot of playing time in it. Highly recommended and a fantastic addition to the growing number of mac games.

I am not really into game playing and if I am we have a Wii, however, I purchased this game following reading a review in a Mac magazine. It really is a very good game and has kept me occupied for hours, long after the last call of "God, are you going to come to bed", and that perhaps is one of the drawbacks, combined with the fact that it does take an age to load up on my imac each time I want to use it. No fault of the Mac, just the program. Game play is excellent, although really accurate mouse clicks are required or your troops etc do not respond. Game play is smooth and the AI is relatively good (no AI is perfect). The resulting battles are fought smoothly and even when a quick outcome is requested, the decisions made are relatively fair.Overall, the game is good and well worth the asking price. I can't give it 5 stars though as whilst it is not bad at all, I do believe it could be improved upon and the loading time is an absolute pain. Other than that, recommended.

I've been a fan of this game since it came out, more so even than Medieval 2 and subsequent games in the series, and the only problem I had with my new Mac was the lack of games, specifically this game. It's an excellent transfer from Windows to OSX, both games work pretty much flawlessly and it's as much fun as ever. Modding potential is limited simply because most of the modding community work on Windows (unsurprisingly) but Europa Barbarorum works well, and the website explains how to install it even if you have no previous experience in installing mods on a Mac (like me). The game did crash once when I was running EB and the music can get stuck during an EB battle, but that's not really part of the product anyway so don't base an opinion on that.Added bonus - it arrived the morning after I ordered it, despite choosing standard delivery which could have taken up to 12 days. Whether this is standard for these guys I don't know, but I certainly have no complaints!

My son (even tho he's younger than the game recommends) plays Rome all the the time - he's absolutely hooked! Though I guess it helps that he's just done ancient Rome at school and did get totally absorbed. Personally, I wish I had the time to sit and learn it because the game looks wonderful, the gameplay is fantastic (or rather the battles are) and even I've learnt something along the way. Unfortunately, I think I'd need a couple of weeks to master it - it is pretty complex with many different layers and controls. For my son, he needed just a couple of minutes and he was off - within an afternoon, he'd invaded most of northern Italy! Which is where the educational aspects come in.Yes it's violent (what's better than sending a bunch of burning pigs into a castle's wooden gates!) but the game is based on facts and there's a story to the whole thing. If you know your ancient Rome from school, it will actually make it more enjoyable I think. In all, a great purchase.

My son sent me an amazon gift voucher for my birthday and I knew I wanted a couple of books but that left some money over. I looked at games for the Mac and discovered this new title for the Mac. Since receiving it I have played nearly every day. In the first game you play as one of the major Roman families helping Rome defend itself and extend it's territories. The aim is to eventually become Emperor. Interest and problems are that you need family members to govern your towns and command your armies, and these members are born, die , or are killed in battle, meaning you often do not have a big enough family for further expansion. The towns need to be developed to provide men and money for your armies and navies. The Senate asks you to perform missions that sometimes conflict with your own interests so do you comply or risk their wrath? A major interest of the game is that you can fight battles and watch your troops move and fight.

This game is brilliant; one of the best games I have ever played. Considering it was released in 2004 and is 11 years old that's saying something. It's highly addictive and offers endless gameplay. Help your dynasty to conquer the world of ancient Rome. Take over your rivals cities by brute force and diplomacy. Make deals for trade, form alliances with ancient civilizations, or wipe them from the face of the earth. Build a mighty army with countless different legions, crush your foes and manage and maintain your own kingdom. The possibilities are endless in this game. Would highly recommend. Graphics do look a little dated but in no way detracts from what is a very sophisticated and highly enjoyable & playable game.Love it!

Question to everyone here, I love this game and have already completed it several times with different factions that is Rome total war version. Have also done the Barbarian expansion part as well. I love it all so well worth buying. One major question is that I played this on my old PC (then new) and remember that you could get a console menu to enter cheats or script to change the game to make it more fun. I can not see a way of getting a console menu opening in this Mac version. Does anyone know how to open the console menu and do the old cheats still work for this version???Js

Rome: Total War is a great game I have only played on PCs, and I long for it to come out on mac because my family have macs. In the campaign, you have to handle the economy and growth of your civilization. Build temples to please the people, build sewers to stop disease, or build a barracks to train soldiers. I like these many options and also think that the environment and other pictures used in Rome: Total War are visually appealing. In battles, use real time strategies to defeat your enemies, losing as few men as possible while the odds are against you.

I always loved this game and then when I threw my old Computer away and got my Imac I missed playing this game a lot.I am so happy that it came out for mac, this is just the best of the Total War Series and every collector or enthusiastic gamer should own this.It is the perfect Strategy Game anyone could imagine and you will love it when buying it.This is a must buy for everyone who owns a mac and is interested in Strategy Games.

I have had this game before on the PC and it is brilliant. On the Mac the mouse controls do not work well enough to play the game and I have had to uninstall it. I have tried every type of control device, wireless mouse, USB mouse, and wireless pad, all of them are the same. Unless I am missing something this game is not worth buying until this problem is sorted.

The mac version of this classic game is virtually idential to the PC - nothing's changed. Game retains its slight clunkiness (its not that smooth, even on a high end machine), but generally a sure bet.WORTH NOTING - if playing over LAN in multiplayer, this mac version is NOT compatible with the earlier PC version.

What a great game this is, if your a total war fan then this is defiitely a must have, it runs smoothly on my Mac Laptop which is over 3.5 years old so I wouldn't be to worried about it "lagging". Just make sure your laptop has the right specs for it! Many happy hours spent on this!
