Quake 4, the latest incarnation of the Quake series, combines the graphical beauty of Doom 3, the gripping storyline of Quake 2, the multiplayer of Quake 3: Arena and the original weapons from Quake 1. As a huge fan of Quake 2 myself, I was anxious to get this game preordered as soon as possible, set on the fact that this game would rock.Well, I was right, the game is good, but not good enough to push it on to full marks for me. The game feels alot like a mesh between Doom 3 and Quake 2, although leans a bit too much towards Doom 3. Having said that though, they have taken out alot of the unpopular aspects from Doom 3 and improved on them, for example, torches are now attached to specific weapons rather than as a stand alone weapon. On top of these improvements, ID have taken it upon themselves to add new ideas into the game that make it alot more interesting. Fans of Half-Life 2 may be happy to hear that you can now team up with AI controlled marines who will help you kill enemies and, in the case of medics and techmarines, repair your health and armour. Some techmarines will even upgrade your weaponary, allowing much more flexibility in the way you use your weapons (Heat-seeking Nailgun ammo being one of my favourites). As well as this, the addition of vehicles are especially welcome, although sometimes dull and frustrating. There's even a point when you have your max health, max armour and speed increased in the game, but I'll let you discover why by yourself. ;)I could go on and on about the features Quake 4 has in it, but when it comes down to it, Quake 4 is a very good game, although the special edition is only worth buying if you don't already own Quake 2 and/or it's expansion packs (just buy the normal edition instead). Word of advice though, you may want to give this a miss if you're looking for a new multiplayer experience, want a game that feels totally different to Doom 3 or have a less than amazing PC as this game is a total resource hog.

If, like me, you loved Quake II and it's two expansion packs The Reckoning and Ground Zero on your old Windows 98 PC and were a bit annoyed when you bought your new Windows XP PC and found that they were not compatible (OK, I know that you are supposed to be able to tweak them so that they run on XP, but I couldn't get them to work), you may be interested in the following. The versions of Quake II, The Reckoning and Ground Zero included on this special edition of Quake 4 ...1. Are completely compatible with Windows XP with no tweaking required.2. Install together in one neat install process, rather than having to go through three separate installs.3. Do not require the Quake 4 disc to be in your drive to play once installed.Oh,and this special edition also includes some rather interesting movies about Quake 4.As for the Quake 4 game itself, it is just awesome. Both singleplayer and multiplayer look amazing and run smoothly on my less than top spec PC (AMD Athlon XP 2000+, 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9800XT 256MB) at a resolution of 1280x1024, which is less than I can say for Call of Duty 2 and Battlefield 2.

The action is great, though when you first start, you wanna get straight into it but you can't because of the semi-cinematics.The game overall is too quickly completed - I got it for Christmas and finished it before New year's - and I don't spend a huge amount of time on it.The storyline is amazing, though disjointed from the Quake theme, it is a breath of fresh air. The bosses are innovative and the characters draw you closer to the virtual reality that is Quake 4.To sum-up; it's good, but doesn't last long enough and it needs a wider variety of monsters. Take some tips from Half-Life guys...

This game is great on the PC. On console it was an import and runs much better under Windows. It came with Quake 2 and I don't have to worry about the extra expansions for Quake 2 and this package comes with them, which is the whole reason I got this game. Quake 4 itself has great game play and a classic.
