Don't only take my word for it... Search Google and you'll see that I am not exaggerating. I use a Late 2013 Mac Pro (the trash can model) and because of its lack of internal hard drive bays, I decided to buy this. Why? Because this supports 10Gb Ethernet and I wanted to be future proofed. I don't need that right now but when I start editing mainly in 4K I will, and I know I'll just be able to pop in a card inside this NAS and get to work, because it has an empty PCI-e expansion slot.It supports 16GB of DDR3 ram, and it's PC12800 so it's fast. There's also a transcoding function that converts weird video formats to H.264 and it's really, really fast. The output files are actually surprisingly good in quality.You can also swap the i3 processor for an i7 if you're feeling adventurous, although that will void the warranty, however adding RAM does not.The media centre function is great, just connect it to the TV via HDMI and use a smartphone app to control it, or you can use a Media Centre remote because the unit has a IR port to recognise remote controls. Did I mention that you can also use an app? Pretty cool. You can also connect one of those multimedia keyboards with integrated trackpads to this and type from your sofa. Nice one!It's entirely made of metal and that's great because it helps to dissipate the heat it generates, which to be honest is negligible. This unit consumes 40W of power on its maximum usage, so it's less than a MacBook Pro 15" just to give you an idea of how efficient it is.I'd love to say a billion things about what it can do but honestly, I don't use half of the functions, however what I use, it does very well. I can consolidade all my Final Cut Pro X library to this and edit over the network over a single 1Gbps connection and it does not stutter. 1080p video and it is smooth like knife through butter.Anyway, this IS worth every single penny. It's not like a computer that you'll be replacing every 3 years, this will last you for ages, it's good to invest in something solid and fast. By the way, this is not the cheapest product, so make sure to check Google Shopping to see prices in other stores. I did not buy mine from Amazon as Dabs had it cheaper when I searched so I got it from them. Posting a review here because I want to stay a TOP 1000 reviewer :P

Supplied with hard drives fully installed. Construction has a good and solid feel. Configuration very easy and GUI has clean appearance. Have connected it to my av receiver by hdmi and to my LAN through home plug. All worked first time. I use the QRemote app to control and make selection on TV screen and this app functions well although it may have a more clunky appearance when compared to some apps. Also it is very worthwhile downloading the xbmc app too so that if you want to select music within that app library you can do so without the need to have tv switched on.Bearing in mind of its location being in my lounge Any concerns regarding possible noise from the drives and cooling fan have proved to be unfounded.My experience is that it generates no more noise than the drives within the likes of Sky, Virgin or freesat boxes.There is one downside in so much as the Qnap does not have an application to be able to connect it to the internet through a VPN provider for that added security - do not be mislead by the vpn network service available as this is purely for you to be able to access the NAS from outside of your LAN. I eventually had this confirmed by Qnap Tech. Support. There was no hint from them that Qnap will be supplying the requisite Qpkg app. anytime soon.The hdmi output and the compatibility with the xbmc programme gave this unit the edge over the Synology range for me. However the lack of VPN connection to providers stopped it from gaining full marks.
