I don't like too much mucking around when I buy something, and this worked with minimal fuss. 4 x 4tb red drives, installed and mirrored easily. The software and interface works well and seems quite secure. I had some issues streaming 1080p video smoothly, but a powerline ethernet set sorted that out. Is quiet and quite fast. The usb 3 ports at the back don't always work for me, but the usb 2 at the front always works. I've had this unit on in England and streamed content from it while in Singapore (with a fast connection of course), and it worked like a dream. It looks quite ugly, but I hide it in a cupboard, and it never really gets hot. Just pair it with a good modem. Very happy so far,and Qnap updates the software so only gets better. I use twonky server software for my samsung smart tv and pcs, works usually without a hitch. It retrospect, I think the more expensive model with an HDMI out probably would have been better and more future proof, but I went for the slightly cheaper option.

I like this and want to love it but I just find the web interface too temperamental.Initial set up is easy. The server is very quiet and looks great.I have two 1TB red discs and we use it for the whole family. No problems as a file storage unit accessed through explore but the clever stuff is all accessed from the web interface (control panel)With the default setting this is visible but I lose access every time I set up a new password or change the IP address to static.I suspect the problem is not with the QNAP but I have spent hours / days changing router, web browser and PC firewall settings and all to no avail. This is my third home NAS and It is certainly the best (brilliant build quality)but I am struggling with it.One day I will sort it out and then it might get 5 stars.

Bought this to centralise and provide resilience for my data. Easily installed, powering up takes a while but once there found it on my network easily (goto Win7 Network and Sharing window and click show full map). Required a firmware update immediately but that went smoothly, easy to follow installation screens (Configured mine for RAID 5 so 8.3Tb actually storage). Formatted disks in less than an hour. Standard shares (multimedia, home, downloads, etc already set up. Adding windows security for a work group took a little working out until I realised that ip address patterns work better.Been up and running for 2 weeks now and all is well.

First rate item, full of options I'm not qualified or able to use. it does however what I want it to do.I'd say that it's not a beginners unit at all and needs support from someone to get it to use its features. However, out of the box, plug in one to four hard drives, plug it in, follow the start-up sheet and it goes. I have it on default with 4x3TB WD Red drives on RAID, giving me 8+TB usable space with that one drive built-in hot swap redundancy as safeguard against drive failture.
