I've used nothing but this stuff since I discovered it. The polymer holds detail down to the pores of the skin-even in miniature. It can be layered- even baked, baked, and baked again. NEVER dries out or decays when unbaked, so you can go back to something literally YEARS later. I've even accidentally left pieces in for an hour longer than the instructions (I get distracted easily) and even these jet-black over baked items primed and painted without issue.Out the box it's crumbly and breaks easily, but once kneaded and slightly warmed by the hands it becomes perfectly workable like the most expensive clay in the world. When working you can freeze the surface with canned air/air dusteer and brush away 'bobbles'and detritis, and when done you can even use certain rubbing alcohols to smooth out prints and dents.Once baked (or boiled- trust me, popular in the US) it can be carved to very fine detail, sanded, glued (with everything from pva to cyanoacrylate (super glue), drilled. You can build up the internal bulk with ANYTHING, I've used everything from aluminium foil to blocks of wood, Ive layered clay over things to take that shape from plastic to even chocolate- yup the chocolate melted but not before the clay had hardened. It can be stained, varnished, coated, painted with water colours, acrylics, enamel etc. We even had a plate chromed. They do other types of sculpey, in medium and hard versions- these are for those needing the density/ behaviousrs of more traditional clays, they even do an ultralight version which has almost no weight (feels like cork or expanded polystyrene and even floats!Pros:* holds very fine detail even down to pores and fingerprints* can be layered, baked more than once* can be painted with almost anything (check what primer you use-and very cheap and nasty spray paints will NOTcure)* Can be bulked out with almost anything* Can be drilled, sanded, sculped, pinned, glued.Cons* Smells REALLY bad when baked- use lots of ventilation* very easily marked before baking, takes scratches/prints almost too easily- we use armatures and stands to help with this- If youlike to hold your work, you'll need to think about this because the entire thing will be covered in your fingerprints.* The colour is weird, its hard to notice everything you need to smooth out- sometimes when we prime a piece wenotice alot of dinks we should have noticed. They do a grey version, but for some dumb reason it's more expensive.

I am very new to clay modelling, though I had dabbled briefly with air dry clay many years ago. I recently purchased a couple of silicone moulds used mainly for icing sugar work, so was intrigued to see how clay would work. I also purchased a pack of flesh tone Fimo air dry clay and then this Sculpey Polymer Clay in beige that you bake. I love the fact it doesn’t dry out, though it’s pretty hard initially from the box, but it soon softens as you manipulate it with your hands. I dusted my moulds with cornflour then tapped out the excess before putting in the clay, I put my moulds in the freezer for 30 minutes before turning out the clay and baking my clay models on greaseproof paper on an oven tray for 15 minutes at 130 degrees c as per the instructions. They heated up and didn’t burn and went smooth and hard when cold. I found I could sand off the excess when cold too.I honestly didn’t notice a smell and my hands stayed pretty clean (unlike air dry clay). My little clay figures are babies and I’m very happy with the skin tone. I added watercolour paint on the bigger one when cold after baking and added hair using a little super glue gel. I also used the glue to add a clay pacifier to the smaller babies face. Please see my photos. This is a first attempt so not perfect but I’d definitely recommend Sculpey Polymer clay, it looks much smoother than the air dry clay and cleaner to use.

A great product, easy to use, a slightly waxy texture, works really well over fine wire mesh and armature wire. The clay is expensive at over a tenner for 1lb but packing your work out with cheap aluminium foil will keep costs down. When baking the clay dont necessarily bake at the recommended 130c for 15 mins per 6mm of clay. I have found it's better to bake the clay at a lower temperature for a longer time period. When baking, check the clay periodically, even at lower temperature it is possible to burn any protruding thin pieces quite quickly, this isn't a problem if the piece is going to be painted. Remember when removing the clay from the oven, until the clay has cooled down the clay is still flexible, cooling is part of the hardening process. With sculpey it is also possible to add clay to the baked clay, to adhere the soft clay use a thin coat of vaseline. This will take a bit of practice. Also remember that when baked clay is returned to heat it becomes slightly flexible again, but once cooled the clay gets harder each time. Baked clay can be sanded and drilled. I would also think that pieces baked separately (for a large sculpture) could be glued together, I haven't attempted this yet. Most important, because the clay is a polymer, keep away from small children. Always wash your hands before and after handling.

Okay, so confession time. I ordered this once before, and returned it, thinking I'd received the wrong item. Where was the well-known cardboard box that it comes in? Then I ordered a second time thinking I'd get that cardboard box. Alas, I kept getting this strangely plastic-wrapped clay, with a dinosaur figurine, instead of the cardboard box with the seahorse. So I went into research mode. And after looking around and finally contacting the Sculpey company, have some great news: they have improved the packaging so that the clay stays fresh longer. Yes, the clay will feel softer in the new plastic packaging--because the moisture hasn't leached out! Which means it has a longer shelf life, and you're getting the optimal clay texture and hardness scale. It's so much easier to work with, still holds it's shape beautifully, and because it's the proper moisture level, it will last longer in my clay stash without having to do hand-breaking conditioning work (like the cardboard packaging before).Hallelujah! And also, great to be able to order on Amazon, receive it in 2 days over here in the Republic of Ireland, and it's a great price. Very happy :)

This product does exactly what is says on the tin (or in this case, the box). It is a good home modelling/sculpting product, and therefore ideal for arts and crafts projects (even with the kids provided there is proper adult supervision) because it can be hardened in the home oven without the need for a kiln.However.... One thing that this product doesn't say on the box, is that it is not food safe. Even after baking/hardening, this product is still unsafe to be used for making items to hold, store or contain food or drink of any description.I feel this is an important point to make because many people buying this product may have the idea of using it like normal clay without the faff of needing a kiln,to make pots, jars, cups, jugs, bowls etc etc. IT IS NOT SAFE for these types of projects, so please be aware of this.

I am new to using this product, and it warmed up quickly in my hands, and combined easily with Sculpey 3, which is a coloured clay, which I used to make it easier to see the details in the sculpture. It is soft every time I return to continue working into my model, and very easy to sculpt. It takes skill to get surfaces smooth and I currently do not have all the tools, so am using my fingers. After 15mins in the oven at a low temperature it had solidified the first layer of my creature. I thought I would work by building up the layers so not to disturb sections that get easily scratched even with short nails. The dry residue it leaves on your hands and surfaces easily washes off with soap and water.Note: The bulk of the character is made out of aluminium foil,so you use this product sparingly to make it go further!

Always used water based clay in the past but thought I would give Sculpey a try instead. Not disappointed. Arrived next day and well packaged. More firm than water based clay but surprisingly easy to mold/sculpt. The 1lb block will go far if you bulk out you armature with tinfoil. Enjoying not having to keep it wet either. As mentioned in another post, Sculpy doesnt like "shaving" tools - it will shred, but it does capture lots of detail. I am in the process of sculpting a small Matt Smith Dr Who bust and Sculpey has been very good for defining hair and head wrinkles. I haven't baked it yet, but I would definitely buy again.70% rubbing alcohol is also a must for getting rid of lumps and bumps where fingers can't smooth out or reach into small areas.

Easy to manipulate and sculpt. If you're used to regular water based clay, Super Sculpey is different in that it can shred and tear slightly if you pass a tool over the surface too quickly. However the convenience of it not drying out, and not having the faff involved with regular clay certainly outweighs this slight disadvantage. I also like that the final product can be baked without shrinkage. It means you can cast the sculpture without risk that the original will remain undamaged, or react with the mould compound. Do be careful of setting the raw material down on paper, cloth or wood, as the oil can interact with certain materials.

Despite the horrible, twee name, this stuff is great to work with. It's not sticky, it's soft enough to use immediately and it holds its shape very well indeed. Baking in the oven is quick, it doesn't smell and it gets hard enough to be durable. I made some puppet heads and was very pleased indeed with the result. I didn't need an armature. Of course, I would be embarrassed to walk into a shop and ask for "super sculpey, please" for fear of sounding like Shirley Temple, but like all embarrassing purchases, shopping online removes any humiliation.

In my opinion, this is the easiest clay to sculpt with. It is malleable straight from the package, and does not stick to tools as much as others. It also is a great colour for those sculpting the human form - replicating a nice flesh tone.EDIT: Super Sculpey is incredibly soft when worked, so anyone looking for firmer clay ( More heavy handed people, like me) should look elsewhere. I recommend Monster Clay for more professional users.

Love this product. It is easy to use and condition but holds detail quite well. I previously used Fimo but much prefer this. Ordering through Amazon I have only ever been sent clay that is fresh and arrived promptly. The product is quite expensive but competitively priced against other retailers. It is very strong once baked but not very flexible. Smaller, spindly parts require armature core.Had hours of fun with this stuff. Love it!

Super Sculpey is brilliant to work with. Being a polymer clay it doesn't dry out. Do yourself a favour and buy a silicone pastry mat, non-stick and durable working surface, up to a bit of abuse - make sure you don't use any food-stuffs on your clay working accessories though! Bakes well, takes lots of surface detail and you can paint over it really easily.Amazon still has the best prices on this when factoring in delivery costs.

this material i great for the little home projects, however i MUST stress that it is not food safe so DO NOT make anything that would go near food, and i also suggest staying near the clay when you have it in the oven because it can burn very fast especially if the oven is new, don't just go off and wait for the calculated time, i watched mine and checked on it at 5 minute intervals i think that is the best thing to do.

25.4.2013

It is not really clay, more like plasticine which goes hard in the oven. I used for replacing gesso pieces on a Georgian fireplace and it was perfect for the job. You need to knead it until it is warm before it is nicely pliable, and then bake it to harden. The baking times are pretty flexible and it hardens as it cools from the oven. Great product, only downside is that it has the colour of false teeth gums!

This is the second time I've ordered this for my son, he loves it. It's the best price I can find. Takes a bit of working with and warming up in your hands to be pliable enough to use. It's great that it doesn't dry out so you can take your time making whatever you're making. We've read to put tinfoil over it like a tent (so, not touching the clay) when you are baking it and it's worked out well
