First off, the basic Fluxx game mechanic is a 4-star game. It's fun, trivially easy to teach and not too frustrating for the players. But in its "beer and pretzel" silliness are mechanics that let it sometimes get bogged down or too weird.Pros:It's very easy to play, even for beginners--starting with a single "draw one, play one" rule. It's silly fun with half the cards changing the rules or the goals of play.It scales well from 2 to many playersIt is somewhat replayableNormal games are about 15 minutes.Cons:It's hard to use very much strategyIt's HIGHLY variable in length. One game can be a 3-card laydown win.Others are an hour or more. It's good for about 3-4 games before you're moving on to other things. The "Pirate Fluxx" deck is a stand-alone game which has the same basic pros and cons, while being marginally more fun than the basic game. It contains a full deck of cards specific to Pirates, and introduces new concepts along with the new theme. A few key cards of note:The Captain's Hat, adds bragging rights to the game and a few play variations. The "talk like a pirate" card is fun, though gets silly after a while. Two new creepers are interesting, easily gotten rid of, and add a bit of variation to playThe "Plunder" card introduces significant card swapping among players. If you've played Fluxx before, or want a safe first time purchase, it's worthwhile. It won't make the sole basis of a 4 hour game night, but is a good filler.Of the theme decks I've played so far (Original, Monty Python, Zombie, Pirates) Pirates is my favorite.

If you've ever played a turn-based multiplayer computer game, the old style games would have you waiting for the next player to take their turn before you could do anything. This was kinda of a bummer as it could be a long wait because there were so many decisions to make. That is the same here.because the rules keep changing some players are taking a while to catch up with the rule changes and then re-read their cards to know what to do next. . . .unlike card games like Dominion, where you can memorize the cards and play without paying much attention.Other than that, our family of six (ages 9-over 40) really like this game.Everyone has a chance to win. It's difficult to apply a lot of strategy because things keep changing so fast. Our games yesterday took over 1hr the first time, because kids kept goofing off and not trying to win but just wanted to play through the various cards. The next two games took less than 20 minutes each.We like that all of us can play and that we can play more than one session, when paying attention to the goal.OVERALL: If players can keep up with the rule changes and figure out what's in their hand, it becomes a fast game you can play several times in one sit down. No single person has an advantage as you can counter the moves of others and hope your draw of the cards is the right combination. We like it a lot!

I bought this card game after playing it at a friends house and all of us (students) thoroughly enjoyed it. The concept behind the fluxx games is really good. As the game progresses you can add new rules including picking up or playing a different number of cards per turn or imposing a hand or keeper limit. It means you can play the game over and over and it changes every time, so it doesn't get boring. This is the only version I have played, and I find it works very well. If the other variations work as well it is a very good game. The cards here are all pirate themed (parrot, captain's hat, plunder and booty keepers for example) and there is even a talk like a pirate card. The only down side I can think of is occasionally,if you have really bad luck, the game can become a little one sided. There are certain cards which give you an advantage and if you collect enough of them it can be quite difficult for the other person to beat you.Despite that, more often than not this doesn't happen and we've played this game many times since it was bought. In terms of delivery, it arrived quickly and in good condition. No complaints.

This is a great addition to the Fluxx series. This one has to be one of my favorites as I've played most of them through friends. They're one of those games that are easy to pick up and play. They do have a small learning curve and a bit of getting used to, but new players can jump right in and play with seasoned Fluxx veterans. We all felt that a common theme in this deck was screwing over your friends as is the way of a pirate! There are one or two cards that did get a little annoying although they are all in good fun and don't need to be performed, although they do offer advantages if they do. The "Talk Like a Pirate" card one one of these cards. When it was first in play it was quite amusing to see how people reacted to it,but over time people grew tired of it and would almost talk less as a result (so they would still get the bonus cards). This was easily solved by omitting the card from the next few rounds of play. All-in-all the game is great fun and if you've played any of the other Fluxx games you'll feel right at home.

This game is a great addition to the FLUXX family. It's fast, it's easy, and it makes your friends put on bad pirate accents! If you are already familiar with previous Fluxx editions, this game makes the play a little faster, with the added abilities of plundering other people's keepers and creepers that move from player to player on every turn, adding a fun new dynamic to game play. It's especially fun to shuffle this together with other FLUXX games and still play seamlessly. For example, pair this with Zombie Fluxx and see how your friends handle talking like a pirate zombie! If you are not already familiar with Fluxx this is a great way to start. The rules are simple, and laid out in front of every player at all times. There is an element of bluff in this game, and it's best to try to load your hand in such a way to have multiple ways to win. This is an excellent party game, because people can jump in or leave at any time, without a break in the game play. And it is just FUN!

I am actually using this game in my counseling group with younger students to help them with their rigidness and dealing with the unexpected. The students love it and it has been great in getting them to be more flexible with their thinking. We play it with teams which makes it a little bit easier for them to understand and speeds up playing time. I play as my own team so I am able to have a little bit of control in changing things up. With your immature students expect them to point out that FLUXX sounds an awful like a certain four letter word they can't say. Actually, I thought the same thing when I first came across the game. The students love the pirate theme idea.We use a toy parrot to set in front of them if they get the captain card because, then we don't have to worry about head lice with a hat.The students really get a kick out of having me call them the captain. Their favorite card is the talk like a pirate card, because I have the worst pirate accent.

For those who know of Fluxx, this is another fine way to change things. For those new to this game, Fluxx is an ever-changing goal-based card game. You have five (5) basic card types: Keepers (things that lead to you winning the game), Creepers (things that, generally, stop you from winning the game), Actions (follow what the card says), New Rules (the basic rules are: at the start of your turn, draw one card and then play one card from you hand), and Goals (a combination of things you need to win the game). The most exciting part about this game is that you never know what could happen. The game could be over in a few minutes or go on forever, all depending upon the cards drawn, played, and rules at any given moment.Pirate Fluxx is another fine installment in the Fluxx family. You will find hilarious pirate-based Keepers, Creepers, Actions, Rules, and Goals in this game. If you like the original game or any of the others, you will love this game. Enjoy!

While I've not personally played all version of Fluxx, the format to playing is all the same. Some minor strategy with a lot of randomized gameplay thrown in. Classic and Pirate Fluxx have been the two I've played with my significant other and friends. Pirate Fluxx is definitely themed appropriately and is slightly humorous, but more generic than I feel it could have been. There are certain cards that cross the 4th wall, forcing you to talk like a pirate or address a player as captain which I find to be a bit too cheesy, but for younger or more casual players, that'll be fun to do for a few times.Overall gameplay can either go quick, or drag on a long time depending on how the stack ends up.I've played games that have burned through near the entire deck with two players which gets boring and tedious to deal with, but most games are pleasant.

I really liked the original Fluxx. My wife, not so much. I enjoy the variety of game play that Fluxx offers - with its ever changing rules and goals. I decided to pick up Pirate Fluxx after reading all the great reviews. I'm glad I did. For family night I busted this card game out with my three boys. I was a little reluctant at first because my youngest son is only 6, but he picked it up quickly with just a little coaching. We all liked the pirate theme, and some of the fun nuances ("That's Captain ___ to you!!"). Although not a favorite game for my wife, she succumbs to the frequent barrage of requests to play Pirate Fluxx with the boys. I actually like this version better than the original as it even introduces Creepers and Surprise cards. If you like Fluxx, you should enjoy this pirate version too.

Love this version of Fluxx. We've played the original, zombie, star and oz Fluxx games and enjoyed them all. The pirate version has all the usual characteristics including creepers. Love the talk like a pirate rule and the plundering adds more mayhem. We are massive game players with hundreds of games for adults and children. Fluxx is certainly up there with the best games we have for a more general group and have successfully played with children as young as 7. It's good fun and certainly not too serious or challenging (although can become a bit crazy!). We often play as a warm up for a games evening. It tends to be fairly quick but we have had games last over 30mins on the odd occasion!Of the versions we've played this is my favourite, but my partner prefers Zombie Fluxx.

I chose this game because I was looking for a quick 2-player game. This game is easy to learn (all you have to do is read the cards), but there is an advantage to being familiar with the cards.Pirate Fluxx requires equal parts skill and luck, which makes it a good game for families where players have differing skill levels. While dramatic Action cards mean anything could happen on any turn, the ability to choose the order in which your cards are played allows you to devise potentially winning strategies. The pirate theme for this game is cute, but I will say that the card that rewards you for talking like a pirate is quite hated in my household.Overall, this game is well worth the money and great for roadtrips or those irritating half-hour waits before dinner is ready.

My friends and I like this version of Fluxx the most out of all of the ones we've played - I also have the Zombie and Stoner editions. You can play Fluxx over and over because of how dynamic and varying the game is. An earlier reviewer said that there isn't opportunity for strategy - not true at all; if you play enough times you can work out what people are planning to do, not to mention the variety of cards that can really be a disadvantage to others. In general, Fluxx (any version) is an amazing game that always changes, but the reason we like this Fluxx the most is because this edition holds "Surprise" cards; you might not understand what this means if you've never played Fluxx before buttrust us veteran Fluxxers - its a complete game-changer!

We (my family) all love Fluxx games. I bought this version for my kid sister so that she could have one of her own. This version of Fluxx is fun for a quick simple game. It's themed really well and the variations caused by the Captain's hat and the plundering make it fun as while. Personally I like Cthulhu and Zombie Fluxx more, as there are more creepers, by Pirate Fluxx is a welcome addition to our collection.Overall, if you want a fun version of Fluxx to introduce someone to the game (either younger player or inexperienced player), this is a good one to do so.Pros: Theme, unique cards, easy to play for beginners, talk like a pirate card is fun.Cons: A little on the simple side.

I have not, and probably will not ever play this game. I bought it for my boys (11 and 12 years of age), so I will let the 11yo tell you what he thinks:It's an awesome game, everything about it, except at times it can get a little dull when the only cards that are being drawn are goal cards. As to the question of durability, they're cards ... they bend. (He also went on a tangent about the divided box they come in being a pain in the you know what ... I'm just surprised they aren't being stored in a zip baggie yet, and that half the cards aren't lost, so in my opinion, this is progress, LOL!)

I've played regular Fluxx and I actually bought that one first. I am so happy that I bought the pirate edition. I haven't played it yet, but I opened up the package and looked through the cards as soon as I got it and after reading the first few cards, I was already excited! The cards are obviously pirate themed and they are hilarious. There's even a "Captain" Keeper that makes everyone who's playing call you captain! This game is great to play with a family or even just your friends.. I would recommend this game to EVERYONE, its that good. Love it, love it, love it!
