Amazon lumps multiple versions of OXO compost bins under one listing, so just to be clear, this review is for the "new" 1.75 gallon size. One of the things I was wondering prior to purchasing was whether the 3 gallon Bio Bags would be too big. In my opinion, they are not. They are oversized, but I like the fact that this gives you enough excess bag to tie closed. I've uploaded a pic showing how much excess there will be when the bin is filled. The bin also has bag management holes (one in the front and one in the back) for stuffing the excess bag material. Once the removable lid base is in place, it hides the bag from being visible from the outside. Both of these features also keep the bag from being drawn into the bin.(I hate when that happens!)The other standout in my book is the lid. Sure, when needed for extended periods, it will stay open when fully opened and upright. But often times, I just want to throw a small item in now and then, so I like the fact that the lid design allows for quick and easy one-handed operation. I could have a peel in hand and I can use that same hand, by simply extending a knuckle, to lift up on the cover's overhanging tab (illustrated in one of my pics). This is something I didn’t know I needed before we got this, so I thought it was worth pointing out. Also, I think that the lid's smooth operation contributes to this ease. We’ve also previously had a Zero Waste Together compost bin, but what I like about the OXO over that one is that the OXO:- has excess bag management (again, bag doesn't fall/get dragged into the bin)- doesn't have holes in the lid- doesn't have a latch (one less thing to deal with)Note that the Zero Waste bin does, however, include brackets to hang the bin if that’s what you’re looking to do. We were using it as a countertop bin and never took to it.Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase. And I hope you found this review helpful.

Our council requires out to separate food waste for composting so we started with a cooking pot with a compost bag and then quickly realised a bin is a better long term solution. We found plenty of kitchen top compost bins but chose the OXO one due to our past positive experience with the brand and this bin's specific features. The bin is big enough to hold two days of food waste for a family of 5, easy to flip open and close and the lid stays open on its own. Compost bags fit under the rim of the lid so when you shut it, the ugly green compost bag does not show. This may seem like a small detail but it really helps - no mess inside, and no unsightly bin bag edges outside. We always remove the lid,tie the bag up and carry the bin outside to dispose of the bag. Cleaning of the bin is also very easy and quick, no edges and corners to deal with, just wipe with a soft sponge and let it air dry.Smell - the bin is not air tight but the lid design closes snuggly and we never had issues with leaking food smell. That being said, we change our bin every other day. If we have raw meat or seafood waste then we take out the bin that same day.In terms of colour, we choose white because it looks cleaner and doesn't show scratches as much. The grey in the pictures of the ad made the item look old and show scuffs and scrapes much more. This is the perfect kitchen top compost bin for our family of 5, good size but not bulky. Looks nice, easy to use and easy to clean. We pay a bit more for the OXO items but we find that they just work well and last a long time.

I bought this for a replacement for my council compost bin, as that kept being really smelly, hard to clean and my cats used to get into itThis is a really nice little bin, it has a removable lid so you can carry any waste directly to an outside bin and not worry about messing around opening up lidThe lid when closed is not 'secure' as in a seal, but is stable enough that my cats can't smell any food and havent attempted getting into it at allThe green inside plastic is easy to clean, just needs a wipe down, or a small amount of water to soak inside it if you have tough debris left overI would have given it 5 stars but I had to get a replacement, as I fully immersed it in water overnight to get rid of some old debris left over, and by the morning, the bin had taken on water as there wasnt a waterproof seal between the green inner and white outer plastic, luckily amazon replaced it with no problems, but I won't be doing that again! If i had known I wouldnt have done it, but nothing on the instructions warned against it

Perfect. Looks great, hygienic but stylish, and just the right size for a kitchen counter. Made of solid materials, very well put together and the detachable lid is a clever bit of design as it's easy to clean.A 5 litre compost bag fits in nicely, just fold it over the top (this is a good thing, as you don't want the bag slipping in!). Alternatively you could just do away with the compost bag, as it's small enough to carry out with it's little handle and to into your garden waste bin, then rise out.Doesn't let out smells at all. But then, it's small so you have to empty it often which in my mind is more desirable than having compost sitting around for ages in the kitchen.Don't be put off by the lack of colour choices either.I nearly didn't buy this because I wanted something blue. However, now that I have it in my kitchen, it looks great. Compost bags are green and to be honest, green is the only appropriate colour accent for this particular product.

I bought this bin to sit on my worktop and hold all our used teabags, to stop the need for us to keep carrying said teabags all the way over to the main bin on the other side of the kitchen! The OXO bin looks great, with a nice rounded shape, a lovely glossy white finish and a pop of bright green colour when you open the lid. It works really well - the lid opens and shuts smoothly, and the smooth interior means that when you want to empty the contents into the recycling bin or onto the compost heap, everything slides out easily. It's really simple to clean, requiring just a quick rinse out, and it doesn't start to smell even when it's had old food scraps or teabags in for a few days. The onlynegative to this bin is that it's slightly larger than I'd like and can be quite conspicuous on the worktop. But overall, I'm really pleased with both its design and function.

After a few years of my worktop being denigrated by the presence of the council issued food bin id had enough and my middle class values could stand it no more. We needed an upgrade. This was in the running with the Joseph Joseph one but that just seemed too small. Council bin is 5 litres. This one is 6 plus but still a very similar size. The lip in the top nicely guides a d hides the compost bags if you use them. The little holes on the rim are good. Not described but useful to tuck the excess bag into. Once the lid goes on it gets hidden nicely. The lid has a nice friction and will go to the vertical but no further. It will happily stay where you leave it too meaning you can prop open at any angle.Lid and bag rim are both removable and nice TK see that the main caddy is dishwasher safe. Our worktop is happy again as are my middle class sensibilities ?

I bought this to replace an old metal bucket I had been using and this is so much easier to keep clean. I do think they should include the measurements though, as it is much smaller than I thought it would be at just 17cm high and 17cm wide so I usually have to empty it twice a day (a family of four).I also think it would be better if it had a sealed lid as the smells still escape and you have to make sure the handle is pushed behind the bin otherwise you can't open the lid.On the plus side it doesn't take up much room on the kitchen side and looks neat and tidy. Keeping it clean is very easy as the thick plastic is so smooth so I just wash it out, which only takes a minute, and dry it with a piece of kitchen roll.Since buying it a couple of weeks ago the price has been reduced from £15 to £9 which now makes it good value for money.

We bought this after moving to an area which doesn't yet provide composting/refuse bins. Having always used the utilitarian offering from the council before, this is lovely! It is white, so isn't too obvious in our light coloured kitchen, the lid stays up nicely, and it is very easy to wash out. I haven't managed to pick up the composting bags I always used inside before, so just put our food waste directly in. In the paste, this has been difficult, but there is a completely smooth, corner and crevice-free, interior which is very easy to wash out and dry out - no 'moats' for water or smelly liquid to gather in. Elected for a plastic bin rather than a more expensive enamelled or steel one on the basis it would be much easier to keep clean.Very pleased with this buy.

Have been using this bin since February as I wanted something that looked good but would contain any nasty smells and be easy to clean. This compost bin is well made; the inside is completely smooth and easy to clean as no seams or corners for waste to get trapped in. The lid also detaches easily but when closed provides an airtight seal.I do use it with the compost bags as it makes clean up easier but would be perfectly fine to use without. If using compost bags I would advise using a slightly larger size so that you can tie them tightly around the edge otherwise they are prone to slipping down.My only complaint is that it would be nice if it was available in different colours to match existing decor. All in all excellent value for money.

We bought this bin after looking at many alternatives and we are very happy with it. It's the ideal size for sitting on the surface next to the sink and it also looks stylish. The fact that it is entirely made of plastic means that it will never go rusty and the easily removable lid makes cleaning simple. I personally, can see no reason for putting a plastic bag in it when it is so easy to wipe out after use. The size is just right for us, not too big, so waste is not sitting in it for days. We've had no problems with smell because we empty it regularly. There has been some slight staining, presumably from the tea bags my wife insists on putting in it, but this does not affect the performance of the bin.I would strongly recommend it.

We have been serious composers for years, sometimes it still disturbs me how much food we throw away! But at least when you compost you know it's going back to creating nutrients for future plants and not adding to landfill :-)We've always used the carbon filter type of caddy previously, but still found we got unpleasant smells and fruit flies even when emptying frequently. This model is great and works with an airtight seal rather than a filter. It has a decent enough capacity and doesn't take up too much space by the sink. It's also easy to clean. We usually just give it a wipe out, but it does claim to be dishwasher safe. And the best bit?The lid stays open on its own for easy scraping of veg peelings.Recommended!

... but it is an order of magnitude better than the local authority provided flimsy contraption that seemed to attract/retain all many of disgusting grimness irrespective of the regularity of cleaning it. This is hassle free, even without liners. Manky partially composted scraps swiftly slide from this container rather than oozing slowly from each nook and crevice in other receptacles because this has been CLEVERLY DESIGNED by someone who had the brains to realise that a smooth, crevice-free surface would prove easier to empty and clean. Also goes in the dishwasher so can be properly sanitised as required. Worth the price for the build-quality, ease of use and time-saving.I also happen to like the colours.

I've actually been using this on our top floor for night time nappy changes, as I refused to pay lots of money on an actual nappy bin and the expensive cassettes which constantly need replacing. It's just the right size to fit on the bathroom counter, although I also tried it out on the floor and can easily flick it open and closed with my foot. The lid can stay up if you are putting in a few things and I can get quite a lot of nappies on before it needs emptying.Even in this hot weather it doesnt let out any smell and it is really easy to empty.Only thing I've noticed is that the plastic is static and attracts every little bit of fluff or dust, but the bin is easy enough to clean inside and out.

I replaced my larger Council Food Waste Bin with on of these. The Council one was much larger but it was impossible to clean and often had black mould growing in it recesses and because of it's design it hard to put in the dishwasher. This is much better, the fact it does not hold as much does not bother me because it means I just need to empty it more into the outside Food Waste bin they also provide, not having left over food hanging around the kitchen is also better, no smells or fruit flies. The fact the lid removes completely from the bin means it's really easy to put in the dishwasher.I've now bought a second one to use for our own compostable items.

Fantastic compost bucket. Not too large. So very easy to clean with the completely smooth interior and minimal shaping on the outside for the lid. Easy to empty but would recommend removing the lid first or you may end up head first in your outside compost bin fishing it out on a cold wet night, which totally didn’t happen to me!Another surprisingly simple but appreciated element is the ease with which you can open the lid with one hand and have it stay open.Probably wouldn’t recommend if you have inquisitive younger cats who I would imagine could easily get in, but my fella is too old for jumping up to the counter top so not an issue for me.
