I saw a real cool dude on "Trike Gypsies" wearing one of these style of sun hats. One term I found for them is "Legionaires hats" and tho' some differences this will work just fine. It's to go under a bicycle helmet but I really only bought it for fun with my bicycle touring friends. The bill could be longer to be a better sun shield and to keep rain off the face but it should be ok. I have been using a long billed baseball hat under my bicycle helmet but it gets too hot. I looked at several of these sun shields on the internet and at amazon but all had snaps holding the sides on, bulky pull cords at the rear and in my experience these dig into the head, not comfortable. The construction of the Outdoor Research Sun Runner has it easy and "clean" to feed the helmet strap inside the side curtains and with no bulky material. With the others I didn't want the face shield. Yup, cost more but it's worth it. $21 on amazon but $36 at REI.......This may also be great for the riding mower, it won't blow off like full brim hats and offer ear protection that baseball hats can't do.

Have been using this Sun Hat for slightly over one month, and find it very useful in protecting me from the scorching sun of South Florida days. The hat itself is very comfortable even on my bald head; especially welcome are the mesh material sides which let in breezes to cool you even as you perspire. The "cape" as I call it is adjustable (great feature) and made of a lightweight/comfortable fabric; my only complaint in this regard is that I wish the sun protection level (30) were higher (say 50!), but that would probably make the hat/cape much bulkier & less comfortable. It's a bit pricey for a sun hat, but if you have to spend any significant time in the sun and burn easily (as I do),it is worth the one-time investment. P.S., it is hand-washable and dries really quickly; it also doesn't retain perspiration, so less apt to require frequent washing! Foldable for travel/storage...I'd give it 5 stars if it had a higher sunblock capability.

This is a crazy good hat, at $35 I thought I was just throwing my cash out the window. It provides outstanding protection, including my bald spot on the back. It is remarkable in how cool it, I have at least five other sun hats, each has its own weakness and none of them meet my needs. I wear over the head hearing protection, the absence of the button on the top is critical as the headset over the button is like driving a spike into your skull after about an hour. The brim is perfect size and the dark underside to prevent glare. The loose flap fits well underneath my hearing protection. For what it is worth I have a 8 1/4 hat size, this hat actually fits! I know $35 is a lot to pay for a work or play hat,but if I could trade in all five of my sun hats, plus my twenty plus baseball hats, I would for just one more of these.

I picked this up when my old sun hat died from years of use. I've worn this in the sun only a few times so far, but it is comfortable and does shade your neck and face well. My only complaint is that the bill is very short, a longer bill would shade your face better. But the wrap around neck shield does cover the sides and front of your neck and the lower parts of your face better than other hats that lack this feature, and this is great for places like in a boat where the sun reflection off the water will sunburn you in areas that are normally shaded. The material is light and airy. I would give this hat 5 stars if it had a longer bill, but for the short bill I'm giving it 4. Also the sizes run smallish.I wear a size small motorcycle helmet, but a size medium in this hat is a little on the tight side.

I love this sun hat! It's so versatile!Unlike other sun hats, this one comes with a snap-on cloth so you can wear the hat as a cap (although you do have 2 metallic snaps protruding out in front but that's not much of an issue). This covers my sides and back of my neck well enough to prevent sun burn while hiking. Also helps to keep out the insects/mozzies. With the pull cord in front, it takes away my worry of my hat/cap flying away when the wind gets too strong. In addition to that, usually the visor will interfere when I use my DSLR and I would have to remove my cap, place/attach it somewhere first before I can use my camera. With the pull cord, I could just swing my cap backwards, snap my pictures and pull it back on. So much more convenient!

I got this hat in advance of running the Inca Trail Marathon. Being an Alaskan training at sea-level, I know the sun is going to be both brighter and more intense in Peru at 10,000 feet. This is going to be very needed piece of equipment. The only thing that's a little odd is how you have to thread the hat's velcro adjustment band through the cape when attaching it. It makes the adding or removing the cape more time consuming and cumbersome than is probably necessary. Perhaps some design thought should be given to rolling up or otherwise storing the cape in place. Regarding the white, I realize it'll be harder to keep clean in a dusty environment, but my purpose in buying the white was to get the most reflective surface I could.

As a distance runner in South Florida, I was looking for a hat that would not only shade my head, but also the sides of my face. Health and vanity being my primary motivations, I want to avoid the sunspots and spotty complexion, and risk of Melanoma, that are so easy to acquire down here while exercising outside. This hat exceeded my expectations. The key component is the drawstring under the chin. In breezy conditions (almost always breezy near the water), the sides stay put. The bill is shorter than most, but perfect given the side panels. I like the adjustable band in the back. Today I was out running and a bicyclist did a 180 while in his saddle and yelled - Love the hat! :)

Yes, this is a great running hat for those of use with larger than "normal" hat sizes. The neck flap is easily removable via 2 snaps on top of bill (no I don't run with this feature.) It's well ventilated on the sides and fast drying. Adjustable with velcro on the back. As a reference I wear something around 7 3/4-8 hat size. I have room to spare if needed, and is not too shallow from top to bottom. It stays on my head when I run (a plus for a functional running hat.) It also protects my easily sunburt head. I never had been able to wear a ball style cap before (without a headache), this is great!

I typically drive/walk outdoors 10+ hours a day in an environment where wind is a large factor and the temps range between 32F and 115F. Even on the hotter days the material is very breathable and causes your head to sweat less than normal ball-caps. You can get a pretty snug fit since its %100 nylon so i have less "blow aways" than I had with normal caps. The neck-guard is not stylish in the least, but effective, although tricky the first couple times you try to attach it back to the cap.So far no "threading" on the edges even after wash and it has withstood the elements and a 3 year old.

I love these hats I have 3 of them. And I am hard to fit. Most XL's are too small for me. Only complaint is the Red one Looks more like Pink to me, so I never wear it. (gave it to my wife) But the other two are great! I just rinse them with cold water and wring them out gently and put them right back on in the summer to keep them clean and get a little extra cool down. The sun shields are easily removed and replaced. Best summer hats I have ever owned, hands down! I have worked outside for 35 years if that matters to you. Cheers

Not the most fashionable look, but it works! I hike a lot. This is the only hat that keeps the sun off of my neck and face. I have problems with hyperpigmentation (malasma) around my mouth. If the sun is directly in my face, I pin the curtain together in front to cover my mouth & chin - works great. I measured my head and ordered it by their size chart, it fit great. It also has a Velcro adjustable strap in the back, similar to other baseball caps. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, this is a must have!

Easy to wear all day, fits well, and the sun-cover is fantastic. The only down-side is you look like Lawrence of Arabia (or if bearded and of the right descent, in the wrong place at the wrong time).Update July 2017: While it's still an absolutely amazing hat, after a year of good use, I have to agree with other reviews that the bill is just a bit too short. If OR does an update in the future to fix that, then this would be one of (if not the) best hats for every day and backpacking use.

This hat has fulfilled my desired for sun protection on long walks and hikes. I have never gotten sunburned while wearing it.Pros:-- long cape/side flaps adequately covers my neck and ears-- easy-to-adjust chip strap-- lightweight material and cooling side vents prevent heat build-upSuggestion:-- a metal snap or velcro closure (in addition to the chin strap) would help cover more of one's face, especially the chin and cheeks, and keep the side flaps from blowing upward in the wind

This hat is perfect for many different outdoor pursuits. It gives great sun coverage, stays on in windy conditions, is light & packs in little space. Great for hiking, backpacking, paddling. I also like that the neck flaps are easily detachable & wear the cap alone many times. Had one before & laid it on the trail. When I remembered 15 minutes later and went to retrieve it, it was gone. Ordered this one as soon as I got home.

This is probably one of the best out there! Flap does not irritate ears. Good coverage. Strap in the front is a must if running. Neck flap is removable but this (unneeded) feature creates other issues. Because the neck flap is removable it takes a little longer to put hat on than a regular hat or one with a fixed neck flap. The neck extension flap does have elastic in it which I find irritating (cause headache.)
