The Zuiko 50mm F2 is one of two macro lenses in the Olympus 4/3 range, compared to the Zuiko 35mm F3.5 the 50mm lens has a slightly longer focal length, wider aperture and better build quality which importantly means the lens is weather sealed when used with the Olympus E-1 or E-3.The lens itself is relatively small as you'd expect for a prime of this type although it's slightly heavier than it looks and certainly feels well built. The design is simple with the only control on the lens being the focus ring which like most of the Zuiko Digital lenses is a focus by wire (turning this ring tells the AF motors to move rather than directly moving the lens). A focus range indicator is the only other item on the lens, this simply shows what range the camera is focussed on which is handy for working with minimum focus in macro shooting. There is a small lens hood which can be reversed for storage on the lens. On the 4/3 format the 50mm focal length equates to about 100mm.In terms of pure image quality the ZD 50mm is outstanding, it's incredibly sharp all across the frame and is well regarded by many people. Although the 100mm equivalent focal length is a bit long as a walk around lens, combined with the F2 aperture it makes for an excellent portrait lens. Although it lacks the convenience of a zoom which I have to admit I generally prefer, the 50mm is just about always in my bag - it's so small and light that it can easily tuck into a corner without being noticed and there's been a few times where it's saved me when I've been shooting very low light concerts. I've always eyed up the 35-100mm F2 lens as it would give me the quality of the 50mm but the flexibility of the zoom however the 35-100 lens is too much in terms of size, weight and cost so the 50mm stays with me. Its weathersealing has proved itself, I ended up shooting a wedding outside for the afternoon which unfortunately (and unsurprisingly in Scotland) rained the whole time. The E-1 and 50mm never missed a beat the whole time. You might be wondering why not five stars, unfortunately while the 50mm is a versatile lens it's very much 'a jack of all trades, master of none'. As a macro lens it is only 1:2, only with the EX-25 macro extension can it reach 1:1. The 50mm lens doesn't give much working distance which means you need to have the lens close to whatever you are trying to photograph which can be tricky when shooting insects. The ring flash oddly doesn't fit the 50mm without a surprisingly pricey step down ring.As a non-macro lens, the focus speed and hunting of the 50mm lens can be somewhat troublesome as Olympus didn't fit any sort of focus limiter to the lens. This means if the camera misses focus it will move all the way through to the macro range and back again which is relatively slow due the lens being a macro lens. A simple focus limiter would stop the lens returning to the macro range which would reduce the problem although as long you make sure you choose a contrasty subject this can generally be avoided especially with the E-3.Sigma do offer some macro lenses, particularly the 150mm stands out which does have a focus limiter however despite my comments above I do like the 50mm lens - the image quality is superb and while it makes some concessions it is still a good all round lens and the small size and weight means it's easy to carry around. I highly recommend this lens, while I've bought a variety of different ones this remains one of my favourites.John

I have a Panasonic DMC-L1 DSLR camera which has a four-thirds mount which came packaged with a great Leica 14-50mm lens. This lens is great but even the best lenses can't cope brilliantly with every photo opportunity that is thrown at it (especially with my photographic skills!) However Panasonic aren't exactly throwing a multitude of Leica lenses onto the market - I have been waiting for their latest offering (14-150mm)to hit the UK market for nearly 6 months now since its launch but to no avail so I looked around for other four-third mount lenses that might be compatible with my camera.I wanted a good quality lens that wouldn't break the bank. I needed a more powerful zoom lens and also a 'portrait'lens and I chose this lens to fill the 'portrait' lens gap in my collection and so far I haven't been disappointed. The lens has a satisfyingly chunky weight to it without going overboard and it fitted easily onto my camera. It focuses quickly on the subject and gives me a good clear image - my attempts at using it at a recent surprise 70th birthday party with just the inbuilt camera flash resulted in several fairly flattering shots which may mean I avoid the lynching mob I normally face.I've also used some low cost magnifying lenses which I also bought on Ebay with the lens and have managed to take several creditable close-up shots of some still-life garden 'arrangements'.The lens was supplied by a very professional eBayer - the product was packaged well and delivered really quickly, the overall experience has been very good indeed.Read full review...

I genuinely believe that during the era of the four thirds system, Olympus produced some of finest digital zoom lenses ever made. This particular prime lens however is in my opinion at least as good as any of them. It is sharp at every aperture and renders fantastic colour. This is even true when the lens is used in conjunction with a Panasonic micro four thirds camera, although with the earliest of those you will have no option but to manually focus. No bad thing in itself anyway when precise focus is genuinely critical and a good electronic viewfinder is available. As a macro lens, it is at least as effective as the Tamron 90mm f2.8, which I also possess. However, the results are rather less clinical and far more beautiful and unlike the Tamron, it effectively doubles up as a superb portrait lens. The only thing that stops the lens being perfect is the focusing noise, whether you choose auto or 'by the wire' manual focus. This is noticeably loud on occasions and anyone sitting for a portrait ought to be warned in advance, because it can be rather disconcerting. To the uninitiated user it sometimes feels as though you are damaging the internal focus mechanism, but there really isn't anything to worry about. So whether you are a four thirds or micro four thirds photographer and interested in the best image quality you can achieve for macro or portraits, this is a superb choice. Disregard the noise if you can and simply enjoy the results, which will make you feel that your photography has moved up to a higher level.

For me this lens is just about optically perfect. Images from it are crystal clear, extremely detailed and free from distortion. Its fairly small and coupled with my E420 I feel I have an extremely lightweight yet powerful system at my disposal. The diameter of it's barrel is actually smaller than the kit lenses and I've found this allows me to be a little more incognito when taking photos. It's officially a macro lens but I use it mostly for portraits and close-up shots of food and other objects.I feel that this is one of the best photographic investments I've made. At the end of the day its a tool but as a fixed focal lens it has forced me to think more about composition than my kit lenses. After becoming familiar with its focal length I've learned to "see" the shot before taking it rather than zooming around and trying to find something. The focal length can prove a little too narrow at times but I appreciate having some limitations as it forces me to be creative rather than snapping away at everything.Focusing speed and hunting has been raised as issues with this lens. However, I found given reasonable light it performs on par with the kit lenses. The 50mm length gives it a 35mm equivalent view of 100mm, which allows you to photograph people comfortably without being in their faces or too distant.Overall, if you're like to get close to your subjects and own an Four Thirds camera than this lens is a must.

This lens falls in the "Pro" category of the Olympus 4/3rd lenses and fits all 4/3rd Olympus and other 4/3 Cameras.Being 50mm it translates to 100mm in 4/3rd terms. It is an f.2.0 lens, so is very bright. 4/3 lenses have better depth of field at lower f stops, so you can shoot at lower values and still get reasonable depth of field. The lens gives very sharp images, and for it's price it is the true gem in the range.I love everything about this lens, build quality, the fact that it is, dust and showerproof (like the E-3 Camera).I went away from Olympus to other brands, but I felt I was paying so much for camera and lenses, that didn't give as good results. So I came back to Olympus using eBay.The first item I bought, as you have guessed, was the 'Little Gem".I hadn't even bought a camera at that time, other than the fact, I have an Olympus E-1, that I love to bits and would never sell. The lens went straight on to the E-1, for "testing" purposes. Bearing in mind the E-1 is only 5 megapixels I got some great macro shots straight away. Sharp and detailed. This was a great find on eBay and had been well looked after. You will never regret buying one if you have a 4/3rd Camera.Gem of a Macro lens. Generally an all round lens, even for everyday use.Read full review...

When I decided to purchase an Olympus E3 about two years ago, I also decided to buy only `Pro' lenses. At the time, the 50mm f2 macro was on my wish list, but took me over my budget. My intention was to wait for a good price, but every time I looked, the price had gone up. I toyed for a while with the 35mm f3.5, and even tried it out, but it just didn't feel right, and the focal length was really too short for portrait work.Eventually, I saw the f2 lens offered on Amazon at a realistic reduction and jumped in. How glad I am that I took the plunge, the second I attached the lens to my camera it just looked and felt right, and it performs as well as it feels. The f2 maximum aperture gives a bright viewfinder image and the picture quality is stunning. My main reason for wanting it was as a portrait lens, and as that it is incredible. I have never really got into macro photography, but putting this lens through its paces has added an extra dimension to my photography.I think this is going to be my favourite lens.

I wanted a lens to replace my once very expensive, but now long out of date, huge and heavy, 90mm Elicar macro. Twenty years and more ago that was superb, but despite being remarkably small and light, the Olympus 50mm f2 ED macro lens gives a similar view, and with AF and modern lens technology, as far as I can tell, performs at an even higher level. It is really well built (in Japan - and you don't often see that these days!) Pictures are razor-sharp and distortion-free corner to corner. It was only having used this lens, stopped down, on a solid tripod, that I fully appreciated the extreme powers of resolution of which the E-3 camera is capable. The 50/f2 also makes a brilliant portrait lens, with very useful depth-of-field, but don't expect any soft focus flattery!

I've only owned this lens for a short while, less than two weeks. Consequently the "newness" hasn't worn off yet, and may be influencing my opinion. From the results I've seen so far the Olympus Digital 50mm F2 Macro lives up to its reputation of being extremely sharp, with good contrast. The lens seems quite small in comparison with the 11-22 or 14-54, neither of which are particularly large lenses. The quality of construction is obvious, both from its external appearance, and from the solid feel of the lens in the hand. Bokeh is good, with out of focus backgrounds easily achieved at F2. I have read reviews where the bokeh is criticized for coloured fringing, but to date I haven't experienced this on images I've taken with this lens.

This lens is a small, well built lens, with a 50mm focal length (equivalent to 100mm in a full frame camera), giving sharp pictures when used on my Olympus e-620. The sharpness, coupled with the F2 aperture it makes it a very good portrait lens.My two grumbles with the lens are that it feels a little "long" for general "walking about". I actually find myself stepping back on occasions when using the lens, which is a little strange. My other grumble would be that the lens has to work sometimes when focusing. This can be linked to the lack of a focus range limiter switch, as the lens has a habit of working its' way through the entire distance range if it doesn't immediatel focus. All this said,it's till a very good lens.

This is a truly great lens from Olympus Zuiko. Its very compact and light and delivers stunning optical performance. I have been missing a great prime lens since I went digital. My old favourite used to be a Canon FD 100mm f1.8 and this is very similar. Its superb at portraits and gives a lovely creamy bokeh and its also great at macro. It does take longer to focus than a standard zoom, and its a bit louder but it does have a lot of travel, especially if it has to goo the full focus range. It really is a classic.

A lovely lens, so glad I purchased it when I did as it costs a lot more now - which surprises me! Super clarity, heavier than I expected. Lovely macro and portraits. Tried it as a walk-around lens but was frustrated not to be able to zoom as I can with the brilliant ED 12-60mm lens I purchased with my Olympus 620. I just love Olympus cameras!

5.12.2013

A super lens for portraits or macro for flowers, small objects.Olympus seem to be falling out of favour, probably because their lenses are really expensive - this one is £700 listed on their website - I paid £200 on ebay. A lot of people are changing and selling off their kit, so bargains are there quite often on ebay.

3.2.2012

It's a little bit heavy, though that is expected. Good build quality. Superb image quality. I've been using this for more than three years now for my E-620 and I'm not disappointed.

31.3.2008

This is super lens, it's fast and crisp edge to edge. As a micro lens it's stunning. but I also use it for portrait and still life work, at which it shines too. A great buy.

A great lens when combined with the E 620. Good for distant landscape, portrait and Macro. I have 4 other lenses and this is the one I leave on the camera.
