Review subjective to cost and my situation.I had ummed and ahhed about this lens over the G (which has the built in focus motor) and decided that for half of the money and the fact i use a D7000, which is a body that has the motor built in required to auto focus this lens, it would be well worth a try. I read lots of reviews, and that doesn't always help as you get bogged down in minor details.at f1.8 and f2.0 this lens can be a little soft and suffer some mild blurring and colour fringing (only really noticeable if you're cropping tight and enlarging the image somewhat), Still useable if you need that extra shutter speed though. It's at f2.2-f5.6 that i've found this lens is incredibly sharp!f2.2 is still a fast shutter speed and a vast improvement over the 5.6 i was most regularly using with the Nikon 18-105 kit lens.don't let reviews put you off, i'm glad i went for this lens! For the money it's incredibly good, incredibly sharp and performs well enough wide open should you need to.And don't get hung up on the aperture. 1.8 might sound awesome, but it's surprising how often you'll reach for a smaller aperture, as a 1.8 can leave a very narrow focus plane. One more thing to mention is if you can't get a sharp image with this lens, it's 99% likely you, not the camera or the lens, no matter how much you like to think you're taking perfect photos. it took me a good few hours shooting to start making the most of this lens, taking some real hash ups along the way.The only reason i would choose the 1.8 G over the 1.8 D is if i had a camera without an internal focus motor.Read full review...

I have a Nikon D70 a wonderful DSLR camera - a great Ebay buy and still available as a GREAT Ebay buy.I have a very useful 22 - 80 zoomy lens - smashing for lots of photos.I checked out http://www.kenrockwell.com/ which is a wonderful advice site for photographers and Ken advised the Nikon Nikkor AF 50 mm F/1.8 D Lens for a prime lens and there are always some for sale on Ebay. Its a film camera lens so the 50mm is more like 75mm on a D70 - so it ain't a wide angle!!I needed a big lump of glass to let in the light for low light photos. I play in a band and wanted photos under ambient light - flash makes Rock'n'Roll look terrible!!This lens is the cheap one - I'd like to have bought the 1.4f but pricey it is.The first time my wife used the camera (she is NOT a photographer)I set it on Programme and turned the f setting to 1.8f - WOW - what great results. With four LED spotlights and the ISO at 1600 we had loads of useable photos with great colour and real mood - JUST WHAT I WANTED!!I have to use the zoom for loads of stuff, the 1.8f has its uses and for some jobs is BRILLIANT - you need one and you need other lenses if you really want to take photographs.Try http://www.kenrockwell.com/ he is full of good advice - leave him a PayPal donation if you use his advice. What's next for me - probably a F5 Nikon - a wonderful film camera for a wonderful Ebay price - have your photos processed straight to CD and away you go on your computer - photos from one of the best cameras EVER!!!!!Read full review...

This classic with a fast maximum aperture is ideal for everyday shooting, perfect in low lighting situations and great for producing images with beautiful background blur (Bokeh).NIKON AF 50mm f/1.8 D is budgetary lens which will be fallen in love even to professional photographers who, for example, use cameras Nikon D3 or D700, thanks to unsurpassed characteristics. This concerns the Nikon Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8 G, (not the ' D ')I wanted a light, quick, sharp, general purpose AF lens. It's quite large for a fifty but I am comparing it to a little pancake, manual 1.8 I used before against which anything is going to seem bulky. It's plenty light enough and the AF is quiet, as the SWM suggests it should be. I like that the actual glass is recessed thus protected to a very useful extent from knocks; it doesn't feel vulnerable whilst being carried without a lens cap.I have only been using it for a short while and already bowled over by the image quality. I cropped into a photo I'd snapped ( a portrait ) quickly against the sun, a moving subject. The razor-sharp definition of strands of hair from the person's head with the sunlight shining through each strand, the colours and the very pleasant diffusion of the bright light behind left me gobsmacked. Further use have only deepened my conviction that this was one heck of a good buy.If you're looking for a quiet 50mm that is plenty fast enough in low light situations, that will do full justice to your own efforts and then some, look no further. You will not be disappointed.Read full review...

Recently bought this Nikon Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8 D Lens from EBay at a very good price and what a bargain it was too. It works perfectly with my Nikon F90X 34mm film slr body, the photos are fantastic razor sharp good colour definition and contrast, a great standard lens,Also being AF/1.8 it's a fantastic lens in low light hand held photography giving you a higher shutter speed which held cut out camera shake in this situation,Also is great on my Nikon D200 digital slr, all the above comments apply too for this cameraExcept of course because the digital image sensor is smaller than 35 mm film, you the crop factor situation that the 50 mm becomes more like a 70mm prime lens,But then it it's goodfor portraits on digital,It's only manual focus on Some of Nikon's newer dslr's like the d40/d40x and d3000/d3100/d3200/5000/d5100/d5200, because this lens does not have the motor for the autofocus built in to it, but you can as I say use it manual focus,I fully recommend this lens first class, I think it's better than the newer version with the built in autofocus motor, it's far better built. Highly recommended buy one.Read full review...

Bought this lens to complement a D7000, the intention being to use it as a portrait and product lens. The build quality is good; high quality plastics used throughout which makes the lens very, very light and extremely nicely balanced on a smaller body. Purchasers should note it doesn't have a built in focusing motor so won't autofocus on a lot of consumer bodies - check compatibility first! On the D7000 this is a simply amazing lens when stopped down to f2.2 or greater. CA and ghosting is pronounced at f1.8 and reduces dramatically as you stop down with it more or less eliminated at f2.2. I've only taken a few dozen images with lens so far but frankly, the image quality is very nearly as good as my old Canon 50mm f1.4.I'm now looking forward to picking up a 35mm AF-D to complement it !Read full review...

A fast 50mm prime lens is an essential bit of kit for every photographer, amateur and proffesional alike. And, is great for portraiture, especialy where you only wish to use natural light. This lens is is great with a max of F/1.8 and works great in manual and auto focus. The focus ring is easy to operate manualy too. It's minimal focus distance is very good and makes this a very versatile lens. I kno wthis is available in a F/1.4 too, but could not justify the extra cash, and have never needed more than this lens offers. There was nothing i did not like about this lens, but users of entry level slr's may find the lack of internal focusing motor a problem. That said, the manual focus of the lens is easy to use and effective.

This little prime lens is a bit like using a box Brownie as it is a fixed focal length lens. It will autofocus with most of the Nikon DSLRs. You can't zoom in and out with it, which took me a couple of minutes to get my head around, but you can change the f/stop to control the depth of field. It has a little slider switch to lock dof to f22 so all shots taken should then be in focus from 0.45m to infinity. I found the results to be sharp and punchy, as with most Nikkor lenses. Where it really scores, if you can't afford a separate macro lens yet, is by adding some good macro filters (mine are Polaroid x1, x2, x4 and x10) to get in really close to capture small details on coins, jewellery, static insects etc.

Fantastic! good condition, great lens, perfect for photographing people, light weight, crisp picture, great in low light.couldnt be happier, its cold outside but I have a warm place in my heart for this lens!like is said fantastic! good condition, great lens, perfect for photographing people, light weight, crisp picture, great in low light.Digital SLR cameras have far more depth-of-field than film cameras.Point-and-shoot cameras, have far more depth-of-field.You can't blur backgrounds as much as you may like.Sharper backgrounds are especially onerous when doing a portrait.Yes, your camera has a face icon that is supposed to blur the background.

This is a top lens and very good for new photographers. It is quite inexpensive and very easy to carry around. The only thing which can be criticized is that it has no Auto Focus feature and it has to be done manually, which if you are a pessimist you mind find it difficult to down. If you are an optimist you should take this as a learning opportunity to train how to perfect manual focusing while shooting. It also does not have a very wide angle view so one has to be diligent and calculate the distance between the camera and object (again another opportunity to learn all about this.) Overall is it a great lens and I highly recommend it.

I bought one of these a few years ago. Its the AD D 50mm f1.8 so will only work on Nikon camera that have a built-in autofocus motor. Some lower cost cameras don't have this so you are better off with an AFS version - which is newer but unfortunately a little more expensive. Both are good but the AFS version is better in terms of quieter focus and maybe slightly sharper at max aperture. Either way the AF D version will work with higher end DX camera such as D300 and D7000 and gives very pleasing results. Some of my best pics are with the 50mm AFD. Just get one once you have checked for compatibility!

Used on a D3200, it is small and light and takes up hardly any space in my bag.It takes super sharp pictures and is great for low light shooting. As it is a fixed focal length you have to think about your shots more than with a zoom lens, which I like as it makes me less complacent with mt shots, it has to be manually focused on my D3200 but I quite enjoy this and it stops me rushing around snapping everything in AF..These are a bargain for the price that they go for.If you are used to a zoom lens then this prime lens might take a bit of getting used to but it is well worth the effort.

7.5.2015

Older style standard lens with superb optical quality, the 'D' series lenses are probably among the best that Nikon made for general use in that they incorporate an aperture ring that allows for independant setting of the 'F' stop without having to rely on the camera doing it as with the newer 'G' lenses. They also have a distance scale that is a great help when focusing in manual mode, a sad omission on the 'G' lenses. Note these lenses cannot be used on some newer Nikon SLR cameras. Being able to set the 'F' stop manually is essential for some types of macro photography.

13.6.2011

The lens in my opinion makes really nice bokeh in the background - film like look with clearly seeing separate bokeh rings, shaped in form of lens aperture (7 blades). Very, very sharp lens. Also the colors is brilliant. This lens works for me much better than Canon's 50mm f1.4 in terms of bokeh and sharpness.Could be slightly bigger size where to hold the hand. When camera try's to focus, focus ring is moving and there is moments when you accidentally hold the focus ring, and that can ruin your shot. Can't imagine better product for the money! Highly recommended!

What can you say, these are cheap as chips, feel well built considering they are pretty much all plastic and give excellent images.Bokeh is fine and the AF is fast enough for most people but is a tad noisy.F1.8 is a bit soft as expected, by 2.8 things are sharpening up nicely and at f8/11 they are excellent.Overall for around £50.00 each these really are great value, a nice little nifty fifty and far cheaper than its replacement version.Note your camera has to have a built in AF motor, there's not one in the lens. These are suitable for both DX and FX cameras.
