This is an economical choice as a standard wide-angle prime lens for a Nikon 35mm SLR that can accept type D lenses. It focusses rapidly without taxing the battery very much, and, as a prime lens, gives far better resolution and colour than any zoom lens can hope to. As far as shutter speed is concerned, its f2.8 effectively matches a 50mm f2, since the wider angle means you can comfortably hand-hold at 1/30 while a 50mm would require 1/60. I have quite a nice collection of Nikkor lenses. This is one of the best. And also one of the best-kept secrets.This lens seems to get very little respect in the Nikon community but I've never understood why. The photos it takes on my D200 are sharp (even wide open) and have good contrast. Better still, the photos just have a really beautiful look to them. Hard to put your finger on exactly why.I find that 28mm is a really useful focal length on DX cameras. It certainly couldn't be described as wide. Just marginally wider than normal.Obviously the results of a good fixed focal length lens like this are always going to be in a different league to consumer-priced zoom lenses.

What an amazing little lens! Very light and compact, so I can take it with me anywhere and not frighten others with the larger 18-200 I usually have. Also, its field of view is similar to my eyes' ( on a DX camera, not full frame ), so I can use it at relatively close range, e.g. when in a room with friends. My 50mm- f1.8, by contrast, has too narrow a field of view and I need longer distances to get a group of people in the shot. Autofocus is fast, and low-light performance is satisfactory, given the 2.8 aperture.Overall very happy with this purhase!

Mainly intended for use with a D810 but also used on a recently re-activated F3. On the D810 the results are what I would expect as this lens has a larger aperture than the zoom I normally use, so the shallower DOF is useful. On the F3 this gives me a wider angle than the 35mm I have been using for many years. Not strictly a Macro lens but focusses well at about 10 inches (25cm) and so is close to being a Macro. All in all an excellent lens and the ability to use it with Film is a good reason to go for the D version instead of a G.

Although this is relatively cheap, it's light and offers the traditional Nikon metal build quality, producing warm, saturated images of old. I briefly owned a new 20mm 1.8/G which I bought earlier this year from Amazon and returned it due to dreadful lack of sharpness, lack of contrast and plasticky build quality. This 28mm is actually a much better and cheaper lens (albeit less wide, of course). Recommended.

really really nice lense. does just what it has to do.. great optics , easy to use.... no brainer... amazon price and service superb. Auto focus is perfect ( cheaper makes often have inconsistant AF on 28mm lenses ). RECOMMENDED.

Lens in better condition than expected like new and a very good price very pleased with the results good skin tone sharp used it on a wedding last Saturday

i used this lens with Nikon d3s,and very much like this combination,the lens is very good and handy no problems at all.
