Nikon have been making 50mm lenses for decades and know what they're doing. This is not a new design - it has been around for years - but it remains pin-sharp and with low distortion. But the main feature is its wide f/1.4 aperture. Used with a full-frame camera it gives razor-thin depth of focus and great bokeh; with crop-frame (DX) it can also isolate the subject better than virtually any other lens. The other side of the coin is the light-gathering ability. Paired with a modern Nikon DSLR this lens will let you autofocus in near-dark conditions.Autofocus does require a camera body with a motor-driven screw: you won't be able to use it to autofocus with lower-end Nikon DSLRs,though manual focus will work fine. Manual aperture control is useful - though of course your camera body can override it. And the straight blades mean you can get lovely sunstars if you stop the lens down, something that is very difficult with the rounded blades of later (eg G-series) lenses. All in all, even though this is actually one of Nikon's cheaper full-frame lenses it is highly recommended. If you can't get good, sharp shots with this lens then the fault is probably with you.Read full review...

Nikkor lenses are basically awesome, everyone knows this, but this particular Len is a great solution to the "what prime should I have on my camera, most of the time?".Pin-sharp, excellently fast lens if you want to play with DoF / Bokeh - there is nothing bad to say.
