Cheap turntables, what's wrong with them:Marketing specs proudly boast about standard features such as 'Moving Magnet Cartridge' 33 and 45 speed, belt drive etc (The equivalent of car manufacturer stating wheels and clutch as a unique selling point).Poor alignment of cartridge/stylus, wobbly platter. Tinny sound. Excessive weight of stylus on records to get even a vaguely acceptable sound that sadly increases the speed of record wear. It's availability in retail environments not traditionally associated with hi-fi. You could go on and on...As such it would be easy to dismiss this turntable based on its Marketing superlatives and low price, perhaps making an assumption that it shares many of the other poor qualities of the Crosley,Ion, GPO and Steepletone turntables. I know I did. However; my meagre budget, my previously wasting money on 2nd hand 80s decks that didn't work as the ebay seller described combined with the 4 out of 5 review of the Lenco in 'What Hi Fi' magazine made me willing to give this Lenco a chance.I'm glad I did. The turntable may have a plastic lightweight chassis yet it is well built and surprisingly robust, it's cartridge is properly aligned (checked it with an alignment protractor), it has a full size platter that doesn't wobble, it may not have user adjustable counterweight but does have a factory built one that is appropriate for the cartridge weight.Furthermore the lack of anti skate dial doesn't mean that it lacks such a feature, I deliberately placed an old unwanted record on to the Lenco, dropped the stylus with the stylus guard on so it would just rest on the record: No movement from the tone arm at all! Suggesting anti skate is in effect. So off to a good start already for such a cheap deck. The sound is very good, even better when I swapped the included conical stylus for an elliptical one. I have heard better sounding Turntables at other peoples houses, yet these cost considerably more. Infact, the Lenco punches above its weight regarding sound quality at this price. Buttons and other controls are responsive too. I haven't tested the USB recording function, but I'm impressed enough based on performance as a basic turntable.Well worth the money. Some important notes:This turntable features a built in pre amp so it can be connected to any device with RCA inputs (those red and white things!) or a 3.5 mm input if you use an RCA to 3.5mm cable or adapter. Devices such as: Sound Bar, Powered Speakers, Amp with aux line inputs, Micro system hi fi with aux inputs, Computer. The pre amp can't be switched off/bypassed so DO NOT connect it to an older stereo amp using the amps phono inputs. Use the aux/tape/cd/tuner etc line inputs instead.Replacement styli appear to be few and far between if you search specifically for Lenco L 85. What isn't mentioned anywhere in internet land (that I can see) is that the stylus for Sanyo ST 09 or ST 09D cartridge is what you are looking for, you will also find this stylus if you type 'stylus for the Bush MTT1' here. The elliptical upgrade is also available here on Amazon.

After having no usable turntable for more than 5 years, I took the chance and ordered this record player from Look Again after seeing very a favourable 4/5 review in What Hifi Sound and Vision magazine. After lengthy supply delays and a generous 15% discount (from £110), I finally received the Lenco l-85 (not to be confused with the Lenco l85, which is a much older model). The build quality for such a low priced player is excellent, it's weighty, doesn't feel like a toy, and the hinges on the lid are dampend so the lid doesn't open or close with a jolt. The arm feels balanced and settles down in the groove with an audible through the speaker, satisfying sound.Setup was a cinch as the arm's anti skating mechanism is factory set,the belt was still in place around the motor and needed no manual placement as it suggests it may need in the instruction book. The preamp is on by default and can't be turned off. If you wish to use it without, you would need to directly connect the wires from the arm to the output sockets at the back, as this is how standard turntables are built.Sound wise, the audio quality at this price level is remarkable, though not the last word when compared to the likes of the Rega P3 or the Pro-Ject RPM1, these give you a lot more finesse and the subtlety you'd expect from more expensive turntables. Having said that, bass is tight and the timing is spot on, and the upper levels have range and presence that make listening to the Lenco and pleasure. An album such as Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast is a notoriously flat affair with the dynamic range, but the Lenco manages to massage out of it every nuance you'd expect from a heavy metal album, the fast drums and rhythmic bass, though lacking in dynamics, can be heard with clarity and followed very easily, while the trio of lead guitars can be distinguished separately as Bruce Dickinson's screaming voice has presence over the music and not sounding pushed to back and lost in a cacophony of noise.I would suggest not using the supplied interconnects, buying a pair of interconnects that are designed to improve the quality over the bundled cable is always a wise investment, and a pair of QED Profile (£22.95 1m) or the Chord Company C-Line (£35 0.5m) would open up the sound of your vinyl for a greater listening experience. At this price level, there really is very little to fault about the Lenco, and if you're looking for an introduction into the world of vinyl, you could do much worse (mentioning the Crosley Cruiser to an enthusiast, or any Crosley, would break their skin out in a cold sweat), but you really can't do much better for the price.Oh, and it records to USB too. I didn't mention it before as i won't be using the feature so i have nothing to say on the subject.

first of all, i didn't buy this from amazon. i got it from a high street retailer as a replacement for another turntable model that was faulty.i really like the look of it. nice and bold colour (i have the red variant). the clear cover is fantastic. a lot of other models don't allow you to close the cover when the record is spinning and some do but don't let you watch it spin (as silly as it sounds i know).the main thing of course is the sound. compared to my previous, and faulty, turntable (a crosley) i would say it sounds much better. everything just sounds much clearer. i have it connected to these speakers:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-51MF1610AA003-GigaWorks-Multimedia-Technology/dp/B001IZZ2PE/thisturntable doesn't connect to speakers via a 3.5mm jack so i had to buy an adapter but i don't feel that it affects the quality of sound. i intend to buy a new set of speakers specifically for the turntable. also, the turntable does not have built in speakers just so you know! as for the usb/recording feature i can't say anything about that as i haven't used it and have no need for it. if you're looking for a good cheap turntable then this is it. beware of going cheaper and of course there are better models out there but for a beginner, like myself, i think this is a great place to start.

I am a vinyl veteran and recently invested in a good quality Pro-Ject turntable. My 13 year old daughter has also caught the vinyl bug and has been buying Gorillaz and Blur vinyl with any pocket money she's saved. We decided Santa should bring her a turntable and CD/amplifier system for her Christmas. She'd seen this turntable in HMV and had made her interest know. After reading reviews and watching YouTube videos we decided this was a good choice. It certainly was. This turntable looks magnificent but, more importantly, it sounds superb. Up and running in seconds and with the inbuilt preamp switched on the sound is top notch with plenty volume. The USB recording hasn't been used yet but,if anything, I'm the one who is excited about that prospect! This turntable performs to a level not far behind my Pro-Ject which is praise indeed.

Overall extremely happy with this purchase. Great sound quality, and very easy to transport from room to room (or to another house entirely). Great value for the money. Unlike other turntables at this price range, this will not damage records, and sound comes out crisp and clear. Notably, you need to hook up speakers to this, or it won't play at all. The only complaint I have is about shipping-- this was shipped in its original box, meaning when my husband brought it into the house, he knew exactly what it was (it was his birthday gift). Be careful if this is a gift-- tick the gift option, and hope for the best that your surprise won't be ruined.

Very attractive product. Easy to use and great sound. My only quibble is that it needs to be clear in the description that you will need to buy separately a phono to mini jack lead to plug this into an external speaker. I feel that the description needs to spell out the fact that external speakers are required for this turntable to be used.
