The Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole Game is based off both the book series by Kathryn Lasky and the film of the same name. As I'm sure you know, this a combat aerial flight game where you take to the skies as a Guardian of Ga'Hoole.Your Character:In this game you play as the owl, Shard, who's often put down because his father famously betrayed the Great Tree. When you begin the game, you can decide what species Shard will be: Barn, Spotted, Grey Grey or Horned. Each owl has its own qualities. For instance, Spotted owls are fast, but weak, while barn owls have lots of health. There are four game slots, so you can have one for each species of owl. :)Missions:The game consists of 27 missions, two of which can't be replayed. These missions are spread out over five worlds: The Great Ga'Hoole Tree, the desert Kuneer, the forest kingdom of Tyto, the Glauxian brotherhood Retreat (books only) and the scrublands of the Beaks. There are five missions per world, apart from the Ga'Hoole Tree which only has three, including the two none-repayable ones. You can earn bronze, silver or gold medals depending on how you preformed in the missions. Most of them have you complete the mission in a certain time, but some ask you to be a guard. There are also Bonus Missions, unlocked after completing a world. Here you will find extra mini missions for you play. Earning gold in all of them earns you an extra life. The missions are great, but I feel restricted. There are only 25 missions for you to replay, and they all very similar. More missions = more fun.Collectables:After you complete all the missions in a world, you can fly around it freely in a Bonus Mission. Dotted around each world are scrolls. Find them, and you unlock concept art. Looking for the scrolls is good fun. There is also a radar that pops up when you're close to one, so you don't have to rely on luck. Some scrolls are well hidden, and require a better search. All in the name of fun, believe me, looking for scrolls is enjoyable, and there's a feeling of pride when you find one without help. You can also collect money called "Shinies". Oh dear. Now we can tell that this is a film-game. They look and move like film-game money. These can be used to by battle sets, as well as giving you Prowess (energy) when it's collected during missions. The bad thing about it is that, once you've bought every battleset, you "Shinies" can only be used to earn you Prowess during missions. But still, your Money on Hand score still rises. But there's nothing for you to spend your "Shinies" on.Wingmen:As well as controlling Shard the Killer-Owl, you have three wingmen, which must be unlocked, at your disposal. At your command they will fight an enemy until death. You get all your wingmen within the first five levels, however, and I personally think it would have been better to have it more spread out.Language:If you haven't read the books, some language won't make sense. For your benefit, here's a small glossary.Tytos - Owls in the Family on Tytonidae, in other words, Barn Owls.Flintmops - a punishment. Owls assigned flintmops have to give some of their freetime into helping around the Great Tree, like when Shard lights the Lanterns.Moon blinking - brain washingRacdrops - a curse.St. Agolious - canyons were owlets are moon blinked, ruled by the Pure Ones in the film.Chaw - a group of Guardians who to certain tasks, i.e, a search and rescue chaw. (Ezelryb pronounces it "charr".Story:Since film games generally follow the same plot as the films they're based on, you would expect the same here. But I applaud Krome Studios for doing the oppiste. The story line hardly looks at Soren and his band. Instead, it focuses on Shard, a young Guardian in training. Although in the film and books it's Soren how puts an end to the malicious Pure Ones, it is in fact Shard who takes up this challenge. It pleases me that the makers have taken the tale and twisted into a funny shape to make this game a little different. The storyline is actually good. Admittedly, it isn't the best as missions don't seem to link to each other to well. many do, but seem to be more "stand-alone". I feel cutscenes should have helped interlock the missions to help the game flow more.Combat:Ah, battle. One thing I love in a game. Thankfully, it's almost impossible to get stuck on this game as the fighting is easy to pick up. Unfortunately, it is a little TOO easy. This game is certainly not challenging. I warn you. But this does make an easy game for children and teenagers who don't feel like hardcore Call of Duty.As for actual moves, there are seven different ways of attacking enemies, including sending your wingmen out to get one and throwing burning coals. I admit it isn't many, but more would be too confusing. I have the game on Wii, and the makers have taken advantage of every single button on the remote. More moves means reusing buttons. Seven is perfect thank you very much.Another thing I like about the combat is that it isn't, how should I put it, "woofy-toofy". We're not talking Disney were a character bounces along and defeats an enemy by tempting them with a cake and then throwing it in their face. Okay, so it's not blood and gore, but it's not light-hearted slap-stick either. In addition, the fighting isn't unrealistic. In games like the Legend of Spyro you can get your characters to perform classy Kun fu. Nice. But it doesn't work with owls. Krome Studios must have realised this, because they made the right decision to have the owls in this game fight (a bit) like real birds. Well okay, birds don't wear armour and throw coals, but it's as realistic as you can possibly get for a game like this. The only thing that is a little "kun fu-y" is when Shard does a little somersault when he attacks. Not a problem though, it doesn't ruin your play. Also, the dodging is a bit rubbish in this game. When an enemy flies in to attack you, you can dodge. But when you've locked on to an enemy in reach. when try to attack them, they won't dodge as you fly AT them, but when you press the attack button. This makes me go insane, and the makers really weren't thinking when they did this.Lastly, I agree with other players that this game can get repetitive. When I first got the game, I couldn't stop playing it. I loved it. Now I only go on it every now and again. All but one mission includes combat. Some missions may give you different tasks, but fighting always come in somewhere. This doesn't stop the game from being fun though. In a way, the repetition is good; it stops you spending hours of your life playing it.Characters and voice acting:Film and book characters appear in the game, like Ezelryb, Borron - who's only really mentioned - and even Soren himself. Film-only character Allomere is here too, all set up with a posh accent. If you've read the books you will also be happy to see Streak again. He's good a charming charcter in the game, and I like him.Other characters have been especially made up for the game. The most important of these made up owls is Parzival. He's there from the start, and, although he isn't vital to the game, the player can really take a feel for him. Okay, so I didn't remember his name until the second time I played the game, but whatever. The player can take a liking to him alongside the other characters in the game. The characters are great; they've got their own personality and role in the game. But there is one thing that drives me into a flurry. The books are quite clearly state that Tyto forest is the home of Tyto owls, barn owls. Since aspects of the game are based off the books, I don't understand how this could have been overlooked. If Tyto is the home of barn owls, then why are there horned owls there? It makes me cringe. The snow-capped land of the Glauxian Retreat is high in the frozen north, and yet there are only barn owls there. Shouldn't they be snowies? The species of owl in this game are highly limited. Only Ezelryb has any uniquely about his look.As I said at the start, Shard has no species, you choose it when you start a game. I think this is an excellent idea. You have different qualities to play with and one character with lots of skins. The only downhill is that the horned owl and the barn owl look quite similar. The game could be much improved with a snowy owl instead. The voice acting in this game is terrible. I won't lie to you. I don't recognise them and the actors aren't listed either in the credits or manual, so their obviously not house-hold names. The actors also attempt the Australian accent in the game. Fine, the film has Australian actors, and actually IS Australian I think. But, come on, I do a better accent then that and I'm awful. Someone who's never heard an Australian accent could do better. The main character, Shard, is without doubt the worst. Some characters, like an owl called Bryony, are half-decent, at least. But Shard . . . let's not go there. Better actors needed? Defiantly.Graphics and cutscenes:It may not be Dragon Age or Avatar, but the game graphics are not bad. Shard flies quiet realistically - very important, a poorly flying creature in a flight simulator is like having a voice couch who can't sing. Completely against the point. the actually flying itself is also pretty good, like how Shard will slow when he ascents and speeds up when he dives. In battle you can also see feathers go everywhere when you strike an owl, or splinters of wood go flying when you destroy a catapult. A nice touch with some realism. At then end of the film, while the credits are rolling, you can see the whole story again in the form of little animated puppets dancing as Owl City sings his To the Sky (great song, download it). The cutscenes which act as little fillers-in to the story, as told by Ezelryb, in the game are based off this. Other cutscenes are just normal. And unlike some games, which like to have their characters repeat all their moves while they're talking in a cutscene, this game doesn't do that. Thank Glaux.Enjoyment factor:This game IS fun. The freedom of the flight, done splendidly in this game, brings players back for more. As do the missions and combat, all fun. It's sad to say the game is repetitive, but as a game played once in a while, this doesn't matter. What brings me back to this game is not just the flight (which I love!) but it's also because I've developed my own ideas. As you play, you will discover tactics in battle. Some render you untouched on the battlefield, while some help you defeat an enemy in seconds. I've also discovered that catapults can actually hurt each other. Here's a tip: Behind inside a catapult via the back entrance and wait for the other catapults to destroy it. It takes practice, and it only works with some catapults (works a treat in the Tyto Bombing Bonus Mission) but it adds to the fun.In conclusion - if you're still reading this, that is - I strongly recommend this game to fans of the film or books and aerial combat. If you're more of a World of Warfare person, then this game might be a bit easy for you. Play the game from time to time, and you won't grow bored with it.This game has everything it needs to be a smash hit. The makers just didn't put it all together as well as they could. It's got the right ingredients, with the wrong method. Thanks for reading!

Hi I bought this game for my 8 yr old son after he had seen the movie. As soon as he realised that a game was available his requests for me to buy it for him were relentless. When he finally got the game, my next battle was restricting his play time on the game.I have never played the game but if my sons' opinion is anything to go by then I would give the game 10 out of 10.

Bought the game to entertain 13year old grand daughter and it worked well. The graphics are good and the flying looks fun and was interesting to follow the story.Far better than all the other wii games I have bought for her.Where the monsters are, frog and the princess and Alice.

This game is a great game for any lovers of the film or owls. The controls are great and you feel like you are really flying. The game is relitivly short however, but there are mini games you can play. Over all a good game and a good buy.

Bought for my 10yr old daughter for Xmas and she loves it. The flying feels quite real and she loves animals, so enjoys playing as an owl. I paid less than six quid, so feel its pretty good value, even if its quite short or repetitive.
