I almost turned off the PC in disgust after about an hour of firsst playing this game but on my second session I "got it" and had a blast with it.I've seen it described as a mixture of Diablo and Baldur's Gate but I think it's closest spiritual ancestor is Divine Divinity, which may well be another game you never heard of (and not to be confused with the sequel Beyond Divinity which I thought was a monotonous difficult to control mess).First thing you need to get your head around is the attunements system. These are essentially powerups which are unlocked by your equipment. So, for instance, a sword may unlock a poison bonus simply by being used a certain amount in combat but a ring may require you to be using a particular elemental power and not wearing armor, thus broadly splitting attunements into melee, magic and ranged. If you aren't regularly swapping out equipment to unlock attunements then you should be.Second thing to get your head around is that this ISN'T Diablo. The combat is going to get you killed if you just try to go toe to toe with opponents, especially on anything much harder than the Easy setting (and there's even a Very Easy setting). As a heavy warrior I found myself on more than one occasion running screaming while blasting things with a wand. When combat gets tough it can be helful to slip into the Dreamworld, which is the mystical dimension. The dreamworld and the real world look more or less the same but there are different creatures in each so you have to be careful or you'll be hopping out of the frying pan into the fire.Combat isn't particularly deep and I never unlocked as much of the magic system as I could have (although I don't think it was a very deep system either) but overall I found it a pretty entertaining experience. It's one of those quirky non-Hollywood storylines that you get from European developers with sarcastic conversations the norm. If you must have a thoroughly triple-A experience from every game you buy then I'd maybe think twice. There are some user interface flaws that make it a little rough around the edges, particularly the inventory system, and it badly needed a better map but if you can live with that then I think you'll have a fine time.
