I bought this lock after my last bike was stolen. I had been using just a cheap Halford's D lock to bind my front wheel and frame. A thief saw to it in about twenty minutes and was soon out and about on my bike. I was looking for something which I could carry with me, but which was very high security.First of all, I have had no problems with theft. Thieves seem to know how hard it is to break a Krytonite New York, because having spoken to other cyclists, they agree that there are rarely signs of applied force on their locks. Someone has tried to cut into mine, and got maybe three millimeters in before giving up. I feel completely confident leaving my bike locked up all day using just this and a cheap mini-lock on a busy street in the centre of London. It's easy to use, too. The bracket fits into the frame of the lock either way around, so you never have to fuss when you're in a hurry to hit the road on a cold night, and the key fits into the lock both ways too, in case you're stupid or have stubby fingers (both of which are true of me). The lock comes with three keys, the main one of which has a bright blue light attached. I've never really had any use for the light, and it's exceptionally blue, but it's quite strong for a little bulb, so if you're trying to see where your lock is in a dark alley, I can imagine it would be of help.I cycle to work every day, and back, with a backpack containing a laptop, charger, two or three books, a light mini-lock and this monster. It's a heavy pack, but I am not considering replacing the lock. I don't mind carrying it. I'm 6'0", male and in good shape, but I can imagine that for someone else, that kind of load would be a burden. If you're worried about the lock's weight, see if you can handle one before buying, because it's exceptionally heavy.

I bought this somewhere else, but it says M18 on the packaging, as pictured.Physical size:As other reviewers have mentioned, this is a heavy lock, putting it on my kitchen scale, it showed up around 2.65kg, so I have no intention of carrying it with me on my commute, instead will be leaving it in the bike shed. This the M18 model has a 18mm thick shackle compared to he older New York Standard Lock which has 16mm thick shackle. This costs a fair bit more, but I will feel better knowing it *should* provide better protections. The Lock:My lock came with 3 keys, 1 of which has a little LED torch on it, 2 others are just single standard keys. The keys themselves are computer cut, which means you cannot duplicated by the local key-cutters.There is a little plastic sliding door on the lock to cover the key hole, not sure how effective that is on stopping water getting in, but it's better than nothing. The keys come with a paper tag to remind users to make sure the key is always fully inserted into the lock before you turn it, from what I'm reading online, there are a lot of incidents where keys have snapped inside the locks. I don't know if that's a safety feature to make it harder to pick the locks, but it's definitely something to be mindful of when using the lock.Dimensions:I measured the internal dimensions to be 10" x 4" (approx 25.4cm x 10xm), which was enough to lock both wheels and the frame of my Brompton all in one go.The outside of the U shackle is around 5.5 wide the whole lock is around 12.5" long. The lock barrel 6.5" wide. Probably easier to look at the attached photos. All in all, I'm happy it fits my bike, and the thickness of the shackle hopefully will be enough to slow down would be thieves and deter the less determined lot.

Had my eye on this lock for so time in view of my wife and I expecting delivery of our electric bikes and always looking for the best price. Then earlier in the week, Amazon suddenly offers it for just £59.99, amazing what a bargain for this piece of engineering.Immediately ordered two. Arrived by click and collect in just four days and on opening the box was quite intimidated by the size of them. In the flesh they are larger than the illustration on the website. Be careful not to strain your wrist. ?Curious to check the weight and surprised to discover only 2.7 kg and not the 5 kg mentioned in a number of reviews. The Kryptonite website states 2.5 kg.Yes it is too heavy for the Lycra clad enthusiasts with bikes able to lift with one finger. The overall size will allow us to lock each bike either side of a town centre or busy car park designated cycle post. In effect, the two locks will span both bike frames. A double whammy that most certainly will deter any dumb brain thief from attempting to steal our large investment. Will take advantage of the Kryptonite initial one year anti-theft offer which will replace each bike up to the value of £2,500 if the lock fails to prevent theft subject to terms and conditions. Thereafter will probably need to look at insurance? So don't be put off by it's weight as you commute or venture because it's dimensions are born to instill confidence that your bike will always be there on your return. Hail to the TITAN!.

This is truly a massive piece of ironwork - I pity the would be bike thief who puts his liberty at risk in a futile attempt to crack it. As other reviewers have pointed out, it is very heavy, probably the heaviest shackle lock I've come across. GOOD! I say. One to keep at home for locking the bike securely to the wall of the house. The shackle is quite long for a single bike, so be careful to use as much of its length as possible. One of the main attractions for me was that it doesn't have a metal clip attached to the shackle for a bike mounting bracket, as I find these can scratch the bike's paintwork. Typical Kryptonite build quality (i.e. well made)and a nice blue LED light on the master key so you can run around pretending to be a police car, or whatever it's meant for.The main body will collect rainwater inside if you leave it out in the elements and the ends of the shackle will rust slightly - this is in common with all similar locks, so live with it.I recommend this lock if you value your steed.

Since purchasing a new bike costing £1300 I figured I'd need a more sturdy lock to go with my other D-lock I already own. The lock itself is very heavy, weighing about 2.5kg but as I keep it in my rucksack this doesn't bother me too much. If you do own an expensive bike that is light I would not reccommend attaching this beast to your frame as it will almost double the weight! You get three keys with it which is handy, some have mentioned they're quite flimsy which I can see but if you're careful this shouldn't be too much of an issue. One thing I do like about it, is that it is an excellent detterant due to it's size and bulkyness and also the whole outside of the lock is covered in a rubberouter layer which really helps to ensure you don't chip the paint off your bike when attaching it in awkward angles.I would reccommend this lock but due to it's shear weight I have knocked off a star. But I suppose this is something you have to accept to have piece of mind.

An excellent lock but seriously heavy compared to my last lock, which probably just shows how inadequate my last lock was. Also on the box it seems to state that it is more designed for motorbikes and scooters, so I really hope they are not able to steal my little pushbike locked up with this thing. Luckily this lock fits into my luggage rack on the rear of my bike so I don't have to carry it in my bag, this might be a different review if I did. However all that said, I feel completely happy leaving my bike locked up with this piece of kit in central London and have had no incidents or attempts to steal this as far as I can tell.Great that the U fits into the lock in any orientation as this always annoys me on the inferior type of lock where it has to go in only one way. Key and mechanism feels solid, although my lock does not fit snugly when secured and rattles when in transit. Not sure if this is normal but not a major thing.

Having had my bike stolen recently I realised how inadequate my shielded cable lock was after thieves bolt cut it. While no lock is infallible the M18 is extremely robust, as the weight of it will testify. Not a lock to carry round with you on your bike though, far too heavy. It comes with 3 keys, one of which has a light which is handy in the poorly lit basement bike cage at work. Care needs to be taken with the key though as unlike the lock itself they feel like they could break in the lock if not used with care. I thought that the lock carried insurance if my bike was stolen whilst locked with it. Beware this only applies to purchases in the US as far as I can see.Overall a very sturdy lock which gives confidence and looks like it will will resist most determined attacks and deter theft of opportunity. The price from Amazon was fantastic being almost half the RRP.

If you are the kind of person that obsesses over every gram you carry on your bike then this is not the lock for you. When you put it with a Kryptonite cable you're looking at carrying a good 3 kilos with you! It doesn't even come with a frame mount, because no bike would have the room for the thing. But, if like me you carry a backpack with you most of the time it's fine. The bar is considerably longer than the Evolution Series I own. This is kind of a mixed blessing as you can get it locked to things I couldn't before but also leaves it a bit more vulnerable to bars and car jacks etc. That said, I feel very safe leaving my bike with this thing locked to it.Maybe not for everyday use due to it's weight but if I'm going to be leaving my bike for an extended period or in an unsafe place like a train station, I'll bring this along for good piece of mind.

A bike enthusiast told me if you buy [sold secure] gold you know your bike is going to stay still. I have no doubts that the bike is safe.I store mine in the bike shed on the rafters as it is indeed very heavy although not impossible in panniers to transport.Used at an angle to go through my rear wheel, downtube and bike stand vertical post it is an immense deterent. a kryptonite 10mm cable is used to secure the front wheel to the system.the key requires caution. direct pressure to ensure the teeth (of the key) remain in the lock and avoid the snapping described in other reviews especially other lock models is essential. From a design point of view it will not allow rotation so a thief would need to cut both sides.I understand that this takes over five minutues of angle grinding from a brief internet search on the lock.

What can I say? This thing is big ,heavy and solid. The photo's really don't show how impressive this thing is yet it still fits in a standard rucksack without any hassle so carrying it not really a problem. It's big enough to fit round pretty much any frame with room for a lamp-post but not so large as to allow room to get much leverage to try and force it open, like any lock it will give in to attack with a grinder but it needs to be cut twice as the lock mechanism holds the shackle firmly at both ends meaning most would-be thieves will look elsewhere , to be honest I suspect it would be quicker to cut through the lamp-post!! The rubber coating is tough and thick enough to take most knocks while the illuminated key is a nice touch (you get 3 keys too) the distinctive logo is a pretty good deterrent on its own.

Having had 2 bikes stolen (mine + my son's) from a busy town centre shopping area when locked with a "light" cable lock in broad daylight. I decided that it was better late than never and not wanting the replacement bikes to go the same way I decided to look at the options. This lock has good reviews and a high security rating. It is very heavy and although I believe that if a thief really wants your bike they will find a way to take it, this is about the best deterrent you can buy & the yellow end bar makes it clear the bike is locked securely. I also use a thick Kryptonite cable to secure the wheels and then clamp the frame to an immovable object. So far I am very happy ,any "casual" thief will look elsewhere, buying the best means there will be other easier options for the light fingered.

It's very heavy, hence why it doesn't come with a bracket. Also as the U is 18mm in diameter, it won't fit the Kryptonite shackles available. But it fits in a reasonable size backpack. Feels very strong, hopefully it'll do it's job protecting my e-bike. The one I received had Sold Secure Gold ratings for 2017 (motorbike) and 2018 (bicycle) so I guess it's the latest version (The "Kryptonite" font on the yellow plastic is different to the picture, but identical to that on the Kryptonite website). Seller was Amazon in my case, sterling service as always. If I had to pick a flaw, it would be that the sold secure labels were peeling off out of the box. These labels are a deterrent so it's important they stay visible,in my book.

Six weeks ago, my motorcycle as well as our bicycle seats were stolen from the brightly lit and CCTV covered back alleyway behind our house. We decided to get serious about our push-bike security, because our transport are bikes that are super-expensive dutch cargobikes. We could not put them in our back yard, as it is the size of a matchbox. This lock was the answer: it is a MASSIVE deterrent, totally uncuttable with anything short of high voltage power tools. When combined with a really good ground anchor, well...I sleep well at night about those bikes.Strongly recommended, and very much worth the money.Don't bother with cheaper security items: that is what my motorcycle was locked with!

Reassuringly huge and heavy. Unlike the other Kryptonite d-locks doesn't come with a frame clamp, presumably because the stress would bend your tubing and anyway it wouldn't fit into the main triangle of a normal bike unless you'd taken out the pump and bottle cages. The kind of thing you'd wrap round the caterpillar tracks to lock up your Chieftain tank. Would be quicker and easier for the thief to cut away the bike rack; even then so long as the lock went through a wheel and the frame thus preventing it being ridden your bike would still be safe because it would be too heavy to cart away.I had a New York 3000 before this and that was a pussy in comparison. Irony, it got stolen.

This is a very expensive and very heavy lock. It's certainly going to offer you a great degree of comfort in knowing that your bike will be secure, however you would not really want to carry this when you are cycling. It's more suited to leaving it at your destination/at work ready for you to use each day whilst you leave your bike unattended for long periods... If you are comfortable leaving such an expensive lock over night. I also have the less significant Kryptonite 'Evolution' bike lock which is a lot lighter by comparison and I feel that it offers me the security I need for spontaneous stops on bike rides and it satisfys the requirements of my insurance.
