This is an excellent update / refresh of the classic PC game from 1990. King's Bounty was one of my favorite games for the Amiga "back in the day". KB:TL differs in many ways from the original game, but the core element of turn-based combat on a hex field is pretty much unchanged and is just as entertaining now as it was then. What I Liked:- Fantastic graphics. The art style is vibrant and colorful. The isometric 3D view is well presented and gives a nice sense of depth and topography.- Engaging turn-based tactical combat. Units have varied strengths and skills that require coordination. Balancing out your army with units that are fast (high initiative) vs. ranged attack vs. damage absorbing vs.high movement rate and so on is very satisfying. The game does a good job of forcing you to churn your army and learn different units because a) most units have a limited supply - once you buy them all up you have to switch to something else and b) units do not grow in strength, so while level 1 peasants and swordsmen are fine at the beginning, eventually you will need to switch over to more powerful units to take out the stronger enemies.- The skill tree system is simple, clear, and effective. No wall chart like Civilization 4 is required. You can specialize in troop enhancement or magical power or try to blend both.- Decent spell system. The spells are well differentiated and have a nice mix of flavor between direct damage, unit enhancement, etc. While it isn't as deep or sophisticated as games like Master of Magic, it is quite functional and provides variety and excitement into the combat.- No enemy AI to compete against. While I enjoyed several of the Heroes of Might and Magic games (which were spawned from the original King's Quest game btw) I never cared for the competition element of facing AI controlled heroes who wander the map collecting resources and attacking your troops. It seemed like on lower difficulty levels the AI opponents were just fodder and not much of a challenge, while on harder difficulty levels you could play for 20 hours and then run into an opponent that was so vastly superior to your forces that he wiped you out. In KB the world is static, which is more to my liking. If you come across an army too powerful for you, simply avoid it and come back later after you've gained a few levels and hired stronger units. You don't have to worry about that unit finding your home base and taking you out of the game. What I Didn't Like:- Software isn't stable. Many people have reported crashes and lock-ups with the game. It worked fine for me, and so it might work fine for you too, but be aware that some people have come across serious errors that prevent them from continuing to play the game. One known problem (as of this writing) is that the game crashes a third of the way into it if you have 64-bit Vista. Hopefully they come out with a patch for that.- Graphics glitches. These were minor, but worth mentioning. Water in particular was a problem on my system. Sometimes while rotating the camera when water was on the screen, horizontal planes of light blue would appear and cover up the land beneath them. It was simple to get rid of them (just rotate the view a little more) but they were still annoying. Combat on a beach also had a problem where some units would appear faded out because they had a blue (water colored) overlay on top of them. Again, this is minor but really should have been fixed.- Anemic rulebook. This is my biggest complaint with the game. The instruction manual is way too brief and does not contain anywhere near enough information, and the "tutorial" is laughable. For example, nowhere in the instructions does it tell you how to rotate the camera view. I found it completely by accident and it is something that is critical to know (you press and hold the right mouse button and then move the mouse). The "tips" on the load screens are very informative and fill you in on some of the details that aren't in the manual, but on my system they go by so fast you don't have time to read them.- No unit stat chart is provided. While it is more of an "action RPG" than a deep strategy game, it still would be helpful to have a table with all the unit types available in the game, their stats (attack, defense, initiative, etc.), special abilities, leadership cost, etc. so you can easily compare different units and plan your army accordingly.- Trite storyline & side quests. You expect a decent story in an RPG...even an "action" RPG. The story in KB:TL is strictly passable. The side quests are particularly trite (go get object X from person Y and bring it to me). While this didn't dissuade me from finishing the game, it could have been done better.Anyway, I enjoyed the game and encourage fans of the original King's Bounty, the Heroes of Might & Magic games, the Disciples games, and even Diablo fans to check it out. It has that addictive quality of leveling up your character, finding loot, and fighting increasingly difficult opponents that all of those games share.

When i first started playing this game i felt like i had been burned by a HOMM rip-off. I was upset that i couldn't upgrade any castles or i couldn't tell which creature's turn it was during the battle scenes. But once i started getting in to the game, it started to grow on me, i just had to accept it for what it was. I mean i still think it is a HOMM rip-off to some extent, many of the units look the same and even have the same abilities, for instance, the vampires have the "no enemy retaliation" ability which is exactly like Heroes. I thought not being able to upgrade my castle sucked at first but then i realized it gave me more time to focus on my hero and just do some good old fashion text-based questing. They don't skimp on the text in this game either, be prepared to read some fairly lengthy stories and requests from all the locals. The graphics are very pleasing to the eye, very bright and vibrant! There is a nice variation of terrain too, ranging from marshy swamps to lush forests to snowy peaks. You choose to play as a Warrior, Paladin or Mage each with their strengths and weaknesses. Its a turn-based game where you are tasked with building armies and casting spells to defeat the enemy on a grid based battlefield. If you have played Heroes of Might and Magic 5 then you will be very familiar with this games layout. The only aspect of King's Bounty that is original to the game is the addition of the Spirits of Rage Box that you find early in the game. It contains four powerful spirits which level up with use. They are like the secret weapon of King's Bounty and can deal out some serious damage in time. There are so many quests and different areas to explore, its hard to say how long it would take to complete everything. I think what makes this game fun and addicting is it constantly rewards you with gold and items with every step and every battle, so you always feel like you are advancing quickly. I like to think of this game as a homage to the HOMM series and not a rip-off. Regardless, it is a solid game and for the price its hard to go wrong with all the hours of entertainment it provides.

I am probably part of the minority in that I never played much HoMM, but was a HUGE fan of the Sega Genesis port of Kings Bounty. From that standpoint, what I love the most about the game is that they gave it enough of a modern face lift to make it a contender with today's technology, while keeping the original flare and charm of the original title. The quests are well thought out, and at times quite amusing. The number of unit possibilities is somewhat impressive, although I felt they could have went even farther with the endless possibilities. The interface is quite easy to learn, only clumsy in some of the rotated 3-D angles when attempting movement. The battle mechanics are perfect, and the animations quite well done. The character advancement system works much differently and has been updated to a more familiar skill tree system. The game's faults remain mostly the same as the original title. The most glaring of course is replay value. While there is some replay value in playing with a different one of the three classes or perhaps testing different army structures, the sub quests remain the same, as does the layout of the world. Only placement of resources varies from game to game, which can also be a large factor in harder levels. As personal taste, I would have like to have seen the bounty system with the many villains that were included in the original title. But those seem to have gone by the wayside in lieu of a quest based system. But overall they did an excellent job balancing "grinding" for advancement with quest content.I recommend this game for anyone who was a fan of the original, or for anyone who wants to enjoy a different spin on your typical RPG. The game says teen, but I found that it was appropriate for any age with only pirates mentioning rum as the "drug reference".

I am currently playing my 2nd go-around on this game on hard difficulty as a mage. My first time, I played for about 4 weeks on medium difficulty as a paladin. This is a very fun game for those who "likes to take it easy" when it comes to gaming. I'm more into strolling around and fighting at my leisure than getting my heart pumping or getting myself frigthened when a monster crashed through the wall. This is a very forgiving game, you can make quite a bit of mistakes (even on hard) and still make it through. The premise of the game is you played a character (warrior, paladin, or mage) who has an army of creatures (up to 5 creatures) and go around adventuring and fighting (very much like HOMM).The fight takes place in a chess-board style turn-based match. There's quite a bit strategy to use because you can have spells, different configuration in your army, and creature's unique abilities to use to your advantage. The game runs fine on my last-gen machine (Duo Core E8400 w/ 2GB RAM, ATI 4830). Zero crash in over 2 months of playing! Which is a +1 star right there. I was able to play without internet connection, so that's definitely another plus. There are some small minus though, at least to me ...1) The special Rage ability is a bit underpowered/unbalanced in my opinion. They don't really do that much direct damage (especially Zerlock and Saleem) and don't scale to later part of the game.2) I find that there are some creatures unbalanced. I think level 5 creatures is a bit weak for their cost. And some creatures (Royal Snakes, Evil Beholders, Black Unicorns) are a bit too powerful. At the end of the day, I got the game for 14-bucks with free shipping from Amazon. With the amount of fun I had and the rock-solid stability of this game, I'm giving this a 5-star!

What a great game (if you're into turn based strategy)! The game itself has 2 parts. One mode is exploring several big maps to find things. It is a top down view of your character on a horse. There are treasures to find, monsters roaming around, and people in castles (or just standing around) to talk to. You can travel to several different lands to do quests for people you meet (everyone has their problems), and have one bigset of missions to complete for your king (he needs a lot of problems solved). You can even get married in the game and have babies?!?! What a concept! Don't worry, the baby/married/divorce stuff is just a couple button clicks.Definitely non graphic. The other mode is a combat map broken into hexes with pieces like a chess board. Each piece is a unit with multiple characters in it (10 frost giants, 50 killer plants, 200 pirates, etc...). This part of the game is great if you're into strategy turn based gameplay. If you need a lot of action, you're going to find this part boring. A few friends of mine watching me play actually didn't know how i stayed awake for this part. This game shines because of the variety of lands to explore, and units to command in the strategy mode. Not a lot of movies to watch and complex puzzles to solve, just a lot of exploring and turn based battles! A great bargain at such a low price if you are a strategy/explorer gameplayer. One more thing: the graphics are great, and you'll want a pretty decent graphics card for this one. My 4gb laptop with integrated graphics is a little herky-jerky. My 2gb desktop with a decent graphics card runs it fine, though.

This is a semi-addictive game, where you play of one of three (male) heroes and undertake various quests for the king, and the citizens of your country.I like some elements, such as some of the side stories, but I found the gameplay frustrating at times. The combat can be hard with occasional monster groupings overpowering your hero and forcing him to a. flee or b. suffer through a long combat where you die anyway. No fun. The choice to run and abandon your army seems so cowardly.I was also frustrated not to be able to play a woman, since I am one. Sure I don't mind playing a guy on occasion, but I'd much prefer a choice. Some of the quests were just dumb, or evil, and I just didn't see myself- for instance- murdering someone for a net, or killing a hundred people/animals just because a person refuses to fly a flag over their castle. The quests were just silly, and morally dubious. I would like a way to `opt out' of some of these quests rather than to choose some of the dialog choices which I didn't agree with.Combat can be repetitive and boring, and I wish it could be skipped occasionally especially with some of the more boring monsters.Overall, while it seems like I'm ripping the game... I'm not. I like the game, and I enjoy playing, but I ended up uninstalling, just because I was finding myself fighting, re-purchasing army units, wash repeat. It got boring constantly having to find a source for units.

first off i got the game from 'lakeplacegames' who sold it for a great price. personally i don't like buying games over $20 and target those that are $10 or less. the seller had it at a great price.second off this game is relatively long but fun. I'm not accustom to this sort of game but after playing 'elven legacy' i was hooked. i enjoy this game for the most part. i love the graphics and smoothness of game play.my gripe however is that i feel the game creator could have have added more help in how u r assisted in finding anything in this game for to me that's definitely lacking. i didn't find any assist on the maps to help you find anything.in fact the quests starts stocking up so quickly that you become lost to where u were when something happened that needed solving which affected something else (confusing isn't it)......yea that's this game. maybe i'm missing something in the game that assist, who knows.after playing for a long time i have decided to start over and try to do absolutely 1 quest at a time, which is hard since some quest requires that u do addition quest from different sources that the first quest can be completed.but apart from that i did enjoy this game.

First of all, I've only been playing the demo so far so my review is based on that experience. I've been playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3 almost daily since it came out in 1999 and this is the first turn based strategy game I've played since then that measures up to the fun of HOMM 3 (including HOMM 4 & 5, neither of which I liked). There are more RPG elements in this game than in HOMM 3. You gather quests from various characters, complete the quests and gain experience. Combat is turn based and you can cast spells and use the Rage box, which calls various monsters to your aid for an attack during combat as long as you have enough Rage points. This is very cool with great graphics and can cause massive damage to your enemy, allowing you to turn the tide of battle if your enemy is stronger than you. Graphics are great and gameplay is very intuitive. My only complaint so far is the game has locked up my system a couple of times, but the problem may be on my end so who knows. I highly recommend this game and will be ordering it soon.

Honestly, when I ordered this game, I didn't expect much, but it was dirt cheap and it looked decent on screenshots. I NEVER trust screenshots, but in this case, yeah, I went with my gut feeling. Boy, was I right! In short, this is AWESOME game!It is done in best tradition of Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It reminds me on HOMM 5, although without all that building your cities and stuff.Very nice game, very easy to get hooked up! So far, it ate DOZENS of my free hours while I'm not working, and that means that I basically sleep 2-3 hours a day thanks to this game :).Nice graphics, interesting quests with couple of options how to finish most of them gives you a slight, but appreciated freedom to choose your approach.Long story short, it's worth buying. I don't know what guys with 1 star are talking about, on my laptop with evaluation version of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit it works just fine :). Takes a bit of time to load, but once it does everything else is a breeze. Go for it, folks, it's worth every penny!

I loved King's Quest back in the day...cut my teeth on those Sierra titles and was addicted. Then X-Com came along and took a large portion of my college studying time. Then I was out of gaming for years...got suckered in by Fallout and then ran into this beauty. How had I never heard of this game?!? It costs me less than $10 and I've already wasted more time on it than any in recent memory. I loved the stylized graphics, loved the storyline (it is childish to some extent...and that's why I love it...reminds me of games as a kid), and the battles are fun and doable...there is always someone you can beat and someone you can't until you get stronger...really pushes you to keep playing far into the night. If you are 35+ and remember the great old games, this is a must buy!

and this one is no exception. The beauty of turn based games is you can set there and play strategy on how to win the battle, and what to sacrifice to get that win. This game has a nice story line with it, and the areas you can explore are fun and exciting. My only wish is that the game would have been larger, but then I'm a pig when it comes to gaming universe. If you can still find this game, and if you like to see very pretty graphics, interesting story line, and fairly complex turn based battles play out with all sorts of units ranging from archers to swordsmen to wizards to clerics, then this is the game for you.It really does excite you imagination, assuming you have one of those. And being as this game is older now, it should be darned cheap to buy.

King's Bounty is a really clever, fun, well-executed game. It is beautiful to look at and very addictive. A wonderful cross between RPG and Casual game (because it is easy to learn and (sometimes) relaxing to play). However, so far I've found one BIG bug which has not, apparently, been fixed by a patch yet. After hours and hours of playing, the game suddenly starts crashing due to a DEP (i.e. Data Execution Error) on Vista Ultimate 64. And the game will not run with DEP turned off! I've checked the web and many players are having this problem. But the game is still well worth buying and playing, especially if Katauri/Atari gets this bug fixed.

24.6.2009

As someone who played the original King's Bounty, and every Hero's of Might and Magic in between; I definately enjoyed playing this game. For the $20 price tag, the game has good play time. Took about 30 hours to play through. The audio is repetitive (but what game's audio isn't?), and the graphics are good. You do need a video card that supports shader's v2.0, so that you'll need a video card that is from 2008 or newer.I would recommend downloading the demo if you haven't ever played a HOMM game before, and if you do buy the first thing to do it download the latest patch before playing.

25.2.2010

The is a really fun game! I wish it was longer. They need to make another one. It took me about a month to finish it. I have Windows 7 and it worked fine. The only trouble I had was that sometimes the game would crash during a battle. So be sure to always save before a fight! One other thing, to change the orientation of your view, you need to hold down the right mouse button while moving the mouse. This wasn't in the little instruction booklet and took me a while to figure out. If you're someone who likes Heroes of Might and Magic, I think you'll also like this game. Have fun!

7.12.2008

At first playing I was not too impressed. However after a short while I began to see the depth of play and variety in the game. I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute. It plays perfectly with all options maxed on my older pc{xp}. I quickly tire of the drabness of games like Neverwinter Nights, dark and gloomy gets old quickly. KB is a refreshing change of scenery-colorful and bright. The game is long, varied, and entertaining. After experiencing the disappointment of Fallout 3 (wouldn't play at all) KB is therapy.
