Unlike so many things these days, this little preamp is built like a tank. Extremely solid, with good quality connectors and switches. I needed a mic-to-balanced line preamp for an application that required it could be used remotely, so battery power was important. This takes 4X 9v batteries and they seem to last a very long time, which is a good thing, because you have to completely unscrew the casing. Subjectively, the preamp sounds very clean, with very low noise. Certainly nothing to complain about. It is also excellent if you need to quickly add another high gain mic input to a mixer that has only some line inputs available. It seems to have a lot of headroom (I had to work hard to make it clip). The RCA outputs also mean it could function as part of a DSLR audio rig. I tested it with a couple of short shotgun mics (Beyer and AT) and it worked very well indeed. Only caveat is that phantom power is +24v rather than a full +48v, but this is usually fine with most such microphones. Summary: Well built, quiet, versatile and sounds very good.

A pretty nice unit in general.Pros:Sturdy case ( all metal ), stepped attenuator for the mic gain, good quality connectors to the back, very good build quality, mic amp is stated as very low noise. All metal film resistors, look like 0.5W Vishays.Cons:Chips inside are NJM4558 which are inferior to many of the newer offerings from Analog Devices, National and Texas Instruments. The LM4562 type has over 20 times less noise and costs $2 more per chip, they could have used it instead. Cheap electrolytic capacitors ( Asia, non Japan ones ) of a brand I hear for the first time. Battery cables on the inside a loose. No USB.

Bought this to allow the use of a DBX 160 compressor prior to my USB interface. For loud signals this will do the job perfectly well and phantom power allows the use of condenser mics. However, on low output mics (such as an SM7B, RE20 or ribbon mic), the noise does start to make its presence felt.Recording vocals say, that are going into a busy mix, it will be excellent. For critical voice-over or classical recording you may need something a little better.

I'm using this with a Rode Procaster Broadcast Dynamic Microphone. On initial set-up without the pre-amp the output was adequate but fairly low when set on maximum gain available. This now is in-line and has added considerable gain and 'oomph' giving me the flexibility to control output to suit.
