I have a confession to make: when the first ICEWIND DALE came out I bought maybe the first copy and rushed home to immerse into it. I had just polished off the excellent BALDUR's GATE and the incomparable PLANESCAPE: TORMENT. A day into ICEWIND DALE and I absolutely hated it!The graphics were comparable (all three games share the same engine) and the gameplay was almost identical. The music was excellent and certain tunes stayed with me ever since. The storyline was nothing to complain about - after all, any story set in "the spine of the world" can hardly go wrong! What I did not appreciate was the rushed feeling of a job on an impossible deadline. In order to prolong the duration of the game, much smaller maps were stuffed with a far greater number of powerful foes - and almost nothing could be solved without combat. As a result, what was expected to be an enjoyable experience turned into a chore of endless autopausing, retargeting and constant battling.Having said the above, I must admit that, in hindsight, my complains seem trivial. Little did I know at the time how far into hell greed would drive the gaming industry. Compared to 3-4 hour games, extra charges for essential content, Limited Installations and RootKits (of the likes of StarFORCE and SecuROM), well, games such as the ICEWIND DALE saga stand out as landmarks in PC-gaming history. The expansion (THE HEART OF WINTER) improved things somewhat but the series did not find its stride until the very good ICEWIND DALE II. I remember spending endless hours with the sequel and can compare it to the original BALDUR's GATE.RECOMMENDED.

The first Icewind Dale is basically just making the most of the well used Bioware Infinity Engine and if you've played Planescape Torment or the Baldur's Gates you'll know your way around the controls. Where I think the Icewind Dales fail is the plot. Although making the entire party yourself from scratch is fun and if you're anything like me you'll have thought of a backstory for each character and a reason for the party to be there, there's very little to discover in the game. All of your party are of your own creation so there's no agonising decisions of who to have in your party nor do you learn much from other NPCs in the game. The story is basically something's going down, find out what.Go to this dungeon, clear it out. Go to that tower, retrieve a something. Go to those crypts, kill the boss and so it goes on till your basically just slogging through without really learning or gaining much. The graphics are solid, with paper doll avatars and a rich landscape with impressive magic visuals and the musical score is lovely too.Of course it's still fun, the magic system and the battling is perfect, the gameplay is the best in any RPG i've ever played. But that's because it's Baldur's Gate minus the epic storyline. Basically if you're reading this and you've not played Baldur's Gate, the Tales of the Sword Coast Expansion pack and Baldur's Gate 2 and the Throne of Bhaal (complete with hundreds and hundreds of hours of playing time) then get this

The Baldur's Gate games are my favourite games of all time. Unfortunately none of these games are another Baldur's Gate. The mechanics are the same, same engine, same party based fights and the same D&D rules (or close variants). However the games are light on story and puzzle elements. Your party is left to fight its way through with allot less dialogue to read and a much straighter path to follow. You create the whole party so the banter and relationship mechanics are also reduced. These changes were always the intention of Icewind Dale and it was made clear right through development so I was not disappointed when I played them.It had allot to do with the sharing of resources and talent to create a project using those who had free time during other projects. I do find them inferior to Baldur's Gate but that doesn't stop them from being great fun. It is still a good party based adventure roleplaying game. There are not enough classic roleplaying adventures of this style and although this one isn't on the top of many roleplaying fans lists, it is usually on the list somewhere. Either play this one over other roleplaying games if you are not a fan of large dialogue or prefer the party fighting side of these games, or play this one secondary to the Baldur's Gate series. Either way give it a go.My only disappointment was that the second one was not a much hinted stop gap to Baldur's Gate III.

Just wanted to note a glitch. In many PCs the game just crashes when you try to create or import a character o while editing a biography. This only happens when HoW installed, though. The error was a Microsoft C++ runtime one and my PC is way above the recomended requirements. Too bad I couldnt play the expansion after getting those 3 CDs, I thought. After searching the web for a fix I tried patching both the vanilla game and the expansion and even doewnladed the lattest C++ components. Nothing resulted. It seems many people is getting the same problem but I havent found any good solution yet.The fix is really simple. You only have to install and start a vanilla game and then install HoW and its lattest patch. It will run smoothly as long as you dont try to edit biographies or change the party members after installing HoW.

I bought this because by the time it was released around the year 2000 I never had th chance to buy it.I must say that the game was better than what I expected, but was a little dissapointed by the fact that you cannot safely import your characters from Baldur's Gate 1 & 2; still the game is well designed around the fact of making your new lvl 1 characters and the Infinity engine is put to good use.About the packaging it is very well thought out, it is neat, non-bulky and light. The DVD feature is gladly received by no longer having to swap CDs constantly.All-in-all for this price and the content I definitely recommend this title.

I grew up playing these games on my Grandfather's Windows 98, alongside the Baldur's Gate series as well. The stories for all the aforementioned games, including the three collected here, are all top notch, and that was the reason why I started playing them all in the first place. The graphics may have dated somewhat but the overall experience remains intact. Top stuff :)

I actually like these better than the Baldurs Gate series. They seem more compatible with my pick up and play for half an hour here and there style (once you've completed the initial set up which can take a while depending how concerned you are about your starting stats.)Recommended if you like the D & D type of RPG.

Received this for Christmas - a series which I had not played before, thoroughly enjoyable have put 40 hours into it already! For me this type of game is a touch of nostalgia. Christian

Great condition. Nothing was missing, broken or damaged in any shape or form. The packaging was great and my friend told me to get it for a gift and they really enjoyed it.

This is a great game to add to your collection. Specially now that GemRB (the open source emulator) is getting better. I'm looking forward to play it on my mobile phone!

I can't say anything about the product as I ordered as a favour to a friend and so did not actually open or play it but what I can say is that it arrived in good time.
