I recently acquired my first digital camera as a replacement for my old faithful 35mm SLR. The bridge camera I decided on has a lot of good qualities but, even on its' lowest setting, I found it didn't give me the 1:1 macro I use for wildlife and natural history photography.(which the old Tamron 90mm macro lens managed perfectly). The close-up filter is a bit of a compromise but, so far, it seems to work perfectly. The glass and build quality is everything you'd expect from Hoya, with good detail on larger insect subjects and a nice, crisp image. The only minor gripe I have is that the filter is quite deep (close to 10mm) so you can't stack it with, say,a polarising filter or another close-up filter to increase the magnification without creating a vignette around your subject. All the same, I'm happy.

I bought this close up filter as it increases the magnification ratio of my 105mm macro lens from 1:1.07 to 1:1.51.The area of view is therefore halved with this lens.It works well and retains auto focus function and, crucially, camera aperture control. The latter is important as my macro lens has no aperture ring so Nikon extension tubes are not an option. The camera, with my 105mm lens, focuses between 270mm to 550mm (and 510mm at infinity) from the sensor plane. The close up lens is well constructed and in combination with the macro gives best resolution at F29 but falls away rapidly at smaller apertures due to diffraction effects. If you can't use extension tubes this could be a useful additionfor macro work and is very easy to use.

I bought this close-up filter as a simpler alternative to extension tubes for occasional macro photography; so far I have used it for shots of small models and for photographing old slides and negatives, with results easily good enough for my purposes. Attached to a Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 Macro lens on a Nikon D7100, it produces images without any noticeable distortion with the lens zoomed to 250mm and allows me to get to about 6" from my subject. At the time of purchase the filter cost £25 and I feel that this was money well spent.

If you want to do some macro photography and do not want to invest in a specialised macro lens, this is the item for you. Being Hoya, it's exceptionally good. I'm delighted with it. Easily transported, it is a great addition to my kit.

This close up lens is excellent. Crisp sharp images that can be printed on A3 photo paper and still as sharp as a pin.
