When Halo finally arrived on the PC, it had its work cut out. Firstly it had to soothe the hurt feelings of PC gamers slighted by its ‘treachery’. Secondly, first person shooter standards are far higher in PC gaming than they are in console land. Thirdly, a little spit and polish aside, the game was already three years old before it came to the PC – making it practically middle-aged by gaming standards. How would it cope? This game – as the title suggests – is a genuine evolution of its genre.Though this is not immediately obvious from the first few scenes. We start off on board the space ship Pillar of Autumn (such a nice name) which is attacked and boarded by an enemy known as the Covenant, who are intent on destroying it and everyone on board. Once the opening scenes explaining the plot and a thinly disguised tutorial level are out of the way, you will find yourself wandering through corridors (a first person shooter staple) encountering several local skirmishes between Covenant and human forces as you go. It’s solid enough but, as I have said, fairly straight forward. The game really begins in earnest when you go down to the Halo itself. It is here, in Halo’s open spaces where the AI is free to do its stuff, that you realise you are not playing just another shooter. One of the main features of Halo’s combat is its use of vehicles. Its selection of small and large, land and air, alien and human vehicles are a key factor in the dynamic, occasionally epic nature of the battles you must fight. The Warthog is probably the most well known of the vehicles. This is the light reconnaissance vehicle used by your troops. Its three barrelled mounted machine gun cuts a swath through infantry, but its, shall we say, ‘enthusiastic’ suspension means that it is prone to rolling over when sharp manoeuvring is required. But Halo is not simply an average shooter with a vehicle gimmick tacked on. Most of the time, you are have to negotiate the enemy on foot. Bungie have made sure that each element of this experience pulls its weight. Each weapon has its benefits and its drawbacks. In addition to your standard issue weapons, you will be able to acquire many other types of weapons from the battlefields of Halo; both alien and human. Human weapons include assault rifles, sniper rifles, shotguns, rocket launchers and fragmentation grenades. Covenant weapons that can be procured include plasma grenades, plasma handguns and rifles, which over heat and temporarily lock up with sustained fire (a game play balancing trick to compensate for not having to reload them, I suspect). If the player were able to acquire all these weapons, he/she would become an unstoppable cannonball of death about half way through the game. To prevent this, Bungie have limited the player to just two firearms and four of each type of grenade at any one time. This frequently left me agonising over which to take and which to leave behind. You need a rapid fire small arm for all the foot soldiers you meet, of course, but what should the second weapon be? Do you take the rocket launcher to deal swiftly with any big boys you might encounter? Or do you take the sniper rifle to thin out their numbers before you move in?This is something you have to really think about before paying serious attention to your battle plan. One of the reasons for this is the game’s saving system. Unfortunately for those PC gamers whose index finger is always hovering around the F5 key, there is no quick save. Instead, the game awards you with a checkpoint; usually when you reach a certain point in the game but sometimes when you have cleared an area of the enemy. Some people might complain about this being a relic of its console origins, but it is more than that. The fact that you cannot simply fire off a couple of rounds, hide behind a rock, quick save and repeat means that you have to think more about what you are doing and the possible consequences of any tactical mistakes you make. Besides, Halo is generous with its checkpoints; you will never find yourself having to repeat more than just the last few minutes, and the organic nature of the combat means that no two battles are ever the same anyway – even if it is the ‘same’ battle as the one you just croaked in.Another interesting tweak is the shields of your personal body armour. If left alone (i.e. you are not taking any damage) they will recharge themselves. The good thing about this is that you will never find yourself in a situation where you are half dead with no shields and progress is virtually impossible. The fact that you can always enter a field of combat with a full shield means that you always have a fighting chance.Halo: Combat Evolved is a truly superb game, one by which others of its genre will be measured. It is a must for all fans of first person shooters and even worth a try for those who aren’t. Even my own brother, who had always despised shooters, was singing its praises in the end.If there is one area in which Halo might disappoint, it’s the technical details. Whilst there are always some people who experience problems installing and running games, Halo seems to have caused more than its fair share of nervous breakdowns regarding sluggish performance and other miscellaneous technical issues; awakening painful memories of GTAIII. Even so, most people, providing they are realistic when it comes to scaling to game’s graphics options, should be able to run this game perfectly well and enjoy the elements that make Halo: Combat Evolved what it is.Play Halo, you won’t be disappointed. I promise.

So first off, I've never played the XBox version of Halo. No, really! With this in mind, I'm reviewing the game from a PC only perspective and not comparing it to it's XBox counterpart, although I'm told the single player story is identical. The first thing that comes to your attention when playing halo is the sense of involvement you get (this is re-enforced later by the solid team AI for your marine friends). You start off on a fatally wounded spaceship with things going off all around you, alarms sounding, explosions - you get the picture. Despite the way this situation has the potential to be confusing, you are guided through it by the voice of the ship's computer/tactical advisor program, which you are carrying and trying to get off the ship. This ensures new players are not overwhelmed.Throughout the portions of the game I have played so far, the story remains just as involving and well presented - often prompted along by your little helper you're carrying.Next is the vehicle combat. Virtually unheard of on the PC, it's fundamental to Halo. It's not thrown in as a cheap gimmick for one small section of a level, it is fully integrated with the game and works extremely well - especially when coupled with the very good team AI (some vehicles carry passengers and have gun turrets etc). The vehicle control system, while unusual, is no trouble once you've adapted to it and it too works surprisingly well.Standard combat is just as fun, and this is not a game where you have to watch your ammo to any great degree. You can spray firepower any which way, and when you run out of ammo, drop your current weapon and swap it for the one carried by the enemy you just shot.Graphically, Halo is still impressive despite being a few years old now. There is lots of detail and special effects, including some impressive bump-mapping effects from your torch. As graphics hardware has moved on somewhat since the game was originally released, the game will play on pretty much any machine that's around 2 years old and still manage to look fantastic. The game's sounds also impress and there has been plenty of attention to detail here too, down to members of you squad commenting "nice shot!" as you pick off targets from a sniper position.Network multiplay is also great fun, with the many vehicles and weapons to be had across sprawling landscapes making this a unique style of multiplayer combat on the PC.All in all, from what I've seen Halo fully deserves it's staggering reputation. How it stacks up against the XBox version I don't know, but viewed alone as a PC game it is simply brilliant.

Whilst Halo: Combat Evolved is undoubtedly action-packed, with possibly one of the best and most immersive story lines around, there are some flaws which mar an otherwise enjoyable game. One of the most obvious and oft repeated is the graphics - even with a high-end computer, Halo's graphics have serious issues with some of the most common graphics cards. Even on the lowest settings, the most visual and intense sequences become jerky and almost unplayable, with the player having to fire almost blindly and hope.Another problem is that of the weaponry. The main weapon, the assault rifle, is frustratingly inaccurate, effective at close to medium-close ranges only. The damage rating is also fairly low, meaning that even on Normal setting it takes almost an entire clip to drop the shields of an Elite, often leaving you reloading at the exact moment when you want to be dropping him. Anything above Normal and you may as well chuck the AR at the first opportunity and pick up a plasma weapon. The second major issue is repetitiveness. Whilst the first few levels are varied and unpredictable, the further you get into the game - especially when the Flood appear - gameplay becomes incredibly predictable: round a corner, shoot the Flood, reload, round another similar corner, shoot more Flood, reload etc. Levels such as the Library were the bane of my existence. Evidently the game designers had run out of ideas by this stage and were simply hoping the player wouldn't notice.I realise I've been rather negative here, but there are problems. I felt it deserved 4 stars because, flaws aside, there's a lot to enjoy here. It doesn't get much better than roaring across the countryside in levels such as Flawless Cowboy and The Silent Cartographer in a Warthog, with a UNSC Marine firing the chaingun at hapless Grunts, cracking an Elite over the back of the head with your rifle, or strafing runs in a Banshee. The other characters are well thought out, with marines providing some fire support or simply distracting a Shade turret from you. Cortana is an almost constant presence, providing intel updates and helpful advice. All in all, a good game, but if you really want to experience it, buy broadband for the multiplayer, or an Xbox.

Having never played Halo before, I was coming to it with no idea how good, or not, it would be. While installing one of the first impressions I had was that it looked well put together, being fairly bug free and stable does tend to be a benefit of console conversions. After some time install completed with no problems.Straight into the game, and a fairly length cut scene began. The story was set and some minutes later, you are given full control of your character. Pretty much all the story telling after this point is done as you go, with full control of your character remaining. This gave a better feeling of involvement then having to sit through helplessly as the CD churns the next scene out.The story wasn't anything amazing, but the acting and pacing was pretty good, though the main character seemed a little lifeless at times, maybe to be expected of a 'semi-cyborg'.The weapons look and sound reasonable, but the console conversion shows here, the aiming reticule is huge and it doesn't take a lot of effort to make contact with your target. The melee ability on weapons is a lot of fun, though not very useful unless your reloading. The vehicles are wierd to drive/fly at first, with the steering being controlled with the mouse and not the cursor keys. After you get the hang of it they are easy to use and one of the best parts of the game, especially in multiplayer.Music & sound is faultless throughout, with the music being exceptional, getting you in the mood for the chapter and providing a nice break from the silence, sometimes lengthy in the game.Overall, Halo is a pretty mindless shooter, there are no puzzle elements and the AI while showing impressive intelligence is still basic fodder. Halo isn't meant to be a serious shooter and there is a comic feel to the game, especially with some of the 'lesser' creatures. If you want an old style, but very fun shooter there isn't much out there to rival it. In its basic form its average, but when you include the vehicles, story telling, comic elements and impressive soundtrack it becomes far above average, if not anything ground breaking.

First impressions of this game were dissapointing. I'd never played the X-Box version & so I couldn't make any direct compariasons. The combat felt far from evolved, The weapons seemed puny & your charachter slow & sluggish (Even with the mouse sensitivity set to max!). It all seemed very like Unreal 2 & it was not hard to see how the X-Box original had influenced that appaling game. Things improved when the 'Warthog' jeep made it's first appearance & by this time I was getting to grips with the combat system which proofed to work very well - The shield idea was fantastic & often forced you into cover when things got a bit on top.Only being able to carry two weapons also seemed a bit lame at first but this turned out to add to the combat rather than detract from it. Graphics are excellent but the repetition of some of the enviroments became very dull after a while & fighting your way through room after room of the same backgrounds became a real chore (At some points I was convinced I was running round in circles!). Enemy A.I. was okay but far from the best seen in this type of game. The enemies became repetative after the first few levels until 'the flood' made an appearance but wave after wave of these Zombie like parasites soon became a chore also. Overall though this was an enjoyable game that could have been fantastic (maybe) if it had not been a direct port from the X-box version. The game has a polished feel even though it is lacking in some area's & since Steam threw a spanner in the works of the on-line Half Life community the multiplayer mode in Halo has been very refreshing with the ease at which you can get on-line & into a game. With 32 people playing one of the many & excellent multiplayer maps Halo is a blast & is almost worth buying for this element alone (Providing the maps are not populated with annoying Team killers!).

I've seen some pretty negative reviews about this product, so thought I'd put in my thoughts. Most of the complaints about this game revolve around the fact that it plays slowly. Perhaps those reviewers need to update their equipment some more? I've got this running on a P4 2.66, 512RAM, nVidia GeForce 4 with broadband, and it runs like a dream at 800x600. The only slowdowns I've experienced is when I've also got too many Windows apps running in the background, and that's just my own dumb fault for trying that.I'd agree with a reviewer on one point: The solo play does feel a little "doomish" at times, with around a million monsters gagging for your blood, all rushing at you at once. Having said that,Halo really gets you hooked from the start. It has a training mission to get you up and running - but a training mission with a twist that whips you straight into the game, seamlessly. I loved that. Plus you're not alone in the game - other human NPCs are there, too, controlled by AI and designed to work with you (kind of!). But hey - to hell with solo play, I say!I bought this game for multiplayer - and there, this game rocks. Capture The Flag (CTF) mode on multiplayer is brilliant: Up to 16 players on 2 teams, with a fleet of 5 different vehicles, flamethrowers, sniper rifles, and hand-held rocket launchers make this PC multiplayer version a whole lot of chaotic fun! Weeks after playing this, I'm still hooked.I'd challenge some of the reviewers below to perhaps re-think their system set-up. If they're expecting Half-Life 2 or Unreal 2004 to run better than Halo does now on their machine, they're perhaps due for a particular kind of upgrade themselves. My advice - if your machine is up to spec, this game will keep you busy for days to come. If only real life was this much fun!

A lot of people have talked a lot of trash about Halo lets first get one thing straight if you have only the minimum spec pc or slightly above you're going to be dissapointed, this game places a heavy demand on a pc. As people seem to like to throw around pc specs i dont see why i should be any different, 3.2GhZ P4, 1Gb PC3200 ram, 160Gb SATA 150 drive, GeForce 5600 personal cinema graphics. Now that graphics card is by no means cutting edge in fact its pretty lousy and is getting shortly replaced with a 6800 Ultra but the game runs fine at 800x600 with most of the detail turned down but certainly not as far as it will go, and no its NOT as good as the X-BOX version which ive played along with Halo2 which is even better (which i own). Now we've got the whole X-BOX V PC thing out of the way let me say this - Halo is a quality game with lastability i'm still playing it in Feb 2005 and stil enjoying it. The game has a loose plot which is credibe enough although am i the only person who finds Cortana's whining a little irritating at times? but its basically a run round and kill everything kind of game - and you know what that makes for a damn good game in my estimation! The best thing though has to be online play, arm yourself with broadband and kiss your friends goodbye, the online element takes it all to a whole new level, 16player deathmatches are the mutts and keep me at the PC all night on a regular basis - which my less than happy employer will atest to - ahem. So is Halo a good game? - Absolutely, is it as good as the X-BOX version - Absolutely not, get yourself some decent kit and enjoy, whinging because you get slowdown on some 2600 Athlon with 256Meg of ram is pointless.

Despite this game's age I thought that considering the hype the series had achieved I had better try it out. Starting at the very beginning with this Halo: Combat Evolved. I was not dissapointed. First of all despite being a port of a hugely successful X-box game I do not think he game loses anything in transition. The mouse and keyboard work as well as any game pad, and a few little extras are added in Multiplayer mode such as the fuel rod gun and the flamethrower. The only downside in this respect is the omission of the co-op mode but this pales in comparison to the game's good points.Halo is great fun from start to finish; the story is engaging, and the levels offering a variety of challenges with 343 Guilty Spark a fantastic example of game design creating the right level of atmosphere. Graphically this game isn't exactly phenomenal but one must bear in mind the game is now pretty old, and for me they more than suffice. What truly makes this game great for me is its on-line multiplayer capacity. The server's even now are very popular and you will always get a game no matter what time of day. Multiplayer gameplay is great fun and the variety of levels ensures players do not get complacent or too comfortable in a particular level. There can be some issues with the balance of the weaponry, for example the pistol is remarkably effective, but in this respect the weapons are far more realistic than in the games sequels (i.e. the shotgun). All in all I had great fun with this game and I still am. Its playability is fantastic, and if you get bored you can download the custom edition for free and expand your experience with a host of custom content!!

Well, where to start. I own this game on the x-box, so barring any big changes this review sould be accurate. Starting with the technical stuff, I think this game has it all. The visuals are stunning, with alien blood splatters, trees, water and backgrounds created with maximum attention and care, also quite amazing is the interaction of the aliens and marines with each other. The aliens alert their comrades to your prescence, or run away when faced with adversity. The marines also cry so many phrases familiar to anybody who has watched a vietnam war film. On the PC I can but dream of what this game will be like, with increased graphics power. The sound also is awesome, with a decent sound card and speakers it should blow you away. With all this attention to graphical deail it would be easy to think the gameplay has been sacrificed, however this is not the case at all, the story is fantastic and the cutscenes seamlessly link the action together (Of which there is plenty).Perhaps the best way to illustrate how good a game this is, is to say that when Microsoft saw the x-box version of Halo they were so impressed they bought the company. I would reccomend that anyone buy this game, it offers a large amount of enjoyment in single player and doesn't end too quickly like some games. Also the multiplayer aspect is fantastic, either cooperating with a buddy to complete the single player game or battling your mates in a huge variety of deathmatch, ctf type games. My view is to buy, buy, buy and enjoy a cracker of a game. I have yet to meet anyone who is not impressed by this game. Buy it and you will see why.

This is the ultimate first person shooter and the excuse i needed to take the plunge and buy an X box and i was Not dissapointed!.First let me start with the graphics! they are fantastic from the characters to the scenery to the laser blasts and explosions!they all drag you into this game which at times seems like an interactive scifi film (a high budget one at that). Then there is the great A.I of your team mates that work well and give you covering fire etc and really make you feel like your part of a team of rock hard marines!.The enemies are a joy and so good to look at its almost a shame to blast them!(yea right!)they also have great A.I and react to everything you do.Then there is the fantastic vehicles the best being the warthog jeep with a gunning postion on the back and also a passenger seat (that you can also shoot from).I could talk forever about this fantastic game but here are a few of the highlights for me!......1)When you manage to get a sticky grenade to stick to an aliens head and they run around in terror before exploding and bounicing of the walls, floor, and celing.2)zooming around the island in the Warthog jeep with my marine buddys shooting and running down anything in our way!.3)Watching one of my marine buddys taking out a bad guy then yelling at him to get up so he can kill him again. So i beg you if you like computer games you must play this! its worth buying an xbox just to play it (especially now they have dropped the price) you will not be dissapointed! then after you have enjoyed it wet your pants at the thought of Halo 2!!! woohoo

as soon as the game is started you notice a planet with a ringworld orbiting as the centre of the cameras attention, it becomes apparent after you start the campaign mode why. humans have come out into space to locate the covenant and instead find a ring world with covenant cruisers trailing the human ship and force it to crash on the ring world, inbetween this incident however, when the attack is started an order was given to thaw a mysterious person encased in a encounter suit capable of keeping the occupant inside alive even in the vacuum of space, they call this genetically enhanced person Master Chief.during the attack the covenant board the ship with firefights going off, shortly after the order was given to abandon ship.down on the planet after a botched and rough landing, the master chief with the AI known as Cortana escape covenant forces who are investigating the crashed pods condition and if any survivors made it after the landings. soon enough however it becomes clear the covenant are just as curious about this ringworld as the humans are and find several control structures that are the key to understanding why this ringworld exists. inevitably though a new threat emerges and is contained after some major fighting from human to covenant, from covenant to this new race that was discovered, and while this threat was contained it appeared the ringworld itself was built to stop this threat from destroying every living thing capable of spawning more of itself.in the end the ringworld was destroyed before it really destroyed everything.

I know, I know, you just bought a new PC with nVidia graphics and expected Halo to play well, and it doesn't. The answer is simple. Halo is a pure Direct X9 game. You MUST HAVE Direct X9 hardware acceleration or this game will play like a injured lamb. What is Direct X9 I hear you say? - Its the new version of Microsoft's 3D graphics software library, incorporating some pretty amazing new effects, and of course, increased demand on hardware.Direct X9 can be simulated in software by cards without DX9 hardware support, but it will make the speed of the game unbearably slow. Its like your video card has to constantly translate to another language while producing those dazzling new DX9 effects.ALL nVidia cards, including the mighty GeForce4 5900 Ultra DO NOT have DX9 support!!!! This makes the GF4 5900 and its lower spec companions USELESS for ALL upcoming DX9 games. TAKE IT BACK TO THE SHOP AND DEMAND A REFUND!!! What's more, nVidia won't tell you this, they just give you 'as it was meant to be seen' and other marketing bull - yeh right. The solution is simple. Buy a Radeon 9600 (or above if you can afford it). Only Radeon 9600's, 9700's and 9800's have full Direct X9 hardware acceleration. These cards make games like Halo run perfectly. What's more, the 9600 is only about £100 these days and it canes anything nVidia has to offer for DX9 games. What's that? That's too expensive? Sell your nVidia card on eBay and put the money towards a 9600 Pro. Trust me, you won't regret it, and you will be able to play upcoming DX9 games!!!...

This game has to be one of the best games in the world the graphics are outstanding , gameplay is awesome and just the way it is its brilliant.Bad points :There are bad points to it though. Like on the x box version you cant go online and play other people which is kinda bad but you can play with a friend and one other bad thing is the fact if your in the middle of a game and you wanna or have to stop playing yur never quite sure if your saved or not b cos you cant go to a save menu it does it by its self so if you turn it off when you come back you might have to start the level all over again !Good points :The aliens in this game just look so realistic there are so many levels so you cant just complete it in a week the never play it again you'll keep coming back to play it.Its like its got a grasp on you.The game is so easy to play ( but not 'some' of the levels )whether you have the p.c version or the x box version it is still has got really simple controls. Whether you like 'beat 'em up' games driving games or shooting games this game has driving in futuristic vehichiles it has loads of weapons some futuristic some ones we have now. whatever type of gamer you'll love this game and just wait till halo 2 comes out (november)then you'll be excited.p.c version : The p.c version I would say is better b cos you can go online there are more weapons and vehicles but even on a top spec p.c it may slip up.My advise get it now !!!!!!!!!!

I am sure that you do not need me to go over why this is such a good game. However, i shall have a go. i will be brief.Halo is without a doubt one of the best games (top 5) i have ever played. For instance, even now, after getting the ps3 and completing resistance fall of man, I still think that halo is by no means outdated.O, how i love playing through the levels on legendary in co-op mode, and the sensation you get when you see two hunters at the end of the corridor.I love the frantic driving at the end of the maw and the satisfction you get when completing it with one second left of the clock. Also, when playing on the level halo, when you are faced with multiple dropships.Halo has provided me with some of my greatist gaming memories and i urge you, if you have not already, buy this game. You will not regret it.In conclusion, i will give it a score.Graphics: 9.5. Great visuals. getting slightly basic now, but some of the corridors set in the alien ships look outstanding.Sound: 10. wow. This soundtrack has to be one of best in any game. ( nearly as good as deus ex and mgs.)Gameplay: 10. In a word, fabulous. From driving frantically to shooting the crap out of everything that's not human. It is incredibleLipespan: 9.5. This game will last you a fairly long time. The campaign will last about 12 hours and add to that a terrific online service...In conclusion, i give the game 9.8 out of 10.

This is one of a new generation of PC games that will once again trash the graphical capabilities of all the current consoles. Halo is set in outer space where an elite human force battle against equally elite but rather psycotic aliens. As if the aliens werent bad enough, a new breed of foreign lifeforms known as the 'flood' are threatening to take over the universe. In desperation to stop them and to gain control, both the humans and the aliens battle for control of Halo, a mystical weapon that while beautiful, is capable of detroying the whole Galaxy.Single player missions are quite varied and make for some great play and the graphics, so long as you have a decent machine, are gorgeous and dream like. However I found that many missions are very similar and i nearly lost faith in the game before I completed it.HOWEVER!!!!! This has to be the best game I have ever played online!!! Apart from Medal of Honour!!! Seriously it is worth the money just for this!!! Fantastic team play driving an amarda of land based and flying machines, while the infantry can be just as deadly with plasma launchers and rocket launchers. The game is worth the money just for single player, which as I say did let the game down somewhat. But complete the game to hone your skills, then go online, and you can kiss goodbye to your social life!!! ----- 4 stars, only let down by a slightly tiresome at times, single player mode.
