So the concept for this is that you are washed ashore in Sweden in the 1980's to find everyone has been pretty much wiped out by robots. No-one knows where they came from, but there is evidence of a sudden evacuation (Notes and audio files for you to follow up to slowly unravel the story). The game can be played single player but is far more fun with friends as a coop open world exploration game. You travel about finding clues as to what happened, looting buildings and vehicles to get weapons, ammo, and a variety of distractionary items (boomboxes, fireworks and such) to aid in your survival against the machines. You can fight head on, or sneak about, distracting enemies, hiding in cover, shooting out lights and such. As well as standard gear and weapons (which come in three states of condition rating) you can get cosmetic clothing to further customize your character (some of which have game effect like bullet/fire resistant or move quietly). For me this game is what Ghost Recon Wildlands should have been like (which was far too busy for my liking). The robots are a big enough threat to add tension, but they are finite in number at each location, and even though they can respawn if you return somewhere, previously defeated robots now appear as damaged and essentially one shots. There are quests, but you can simply explore as you like, and as you go there is also a roleplay element in the form of skill points you can spend to help with things like weapon skills, lockpicking, carry capacity, running and more. The scenery and weather effect graphics are very nice and at times I felt like I was just on a hiking trip around Sweden, forgetting about the robot menace on more than one occasion. The robots themselves move well, and though sometimes they can get stuck on scenery, for the most part their AI was challenging enough. Building interior and vehicle graphics did look a bit dated though, and my biggest grip would probably be the very similar layout and design of the buildings (I think they were all built by the same contactor), as you often felt a sense of deja vu as you looted the same kind of house for the upteenth time. The game does also feel a bit too empty (Almost Fallout 76 empty) as you never find any npc's to speak to (I haven't after about 12 hours play anyways) and notes, audio logs, blood smears and dead soldiers and robots tell the only testament to what has happened. However unlike Fallout 76 because this is a single/coop game, this doesn't impact as much, and coop was particularly fun as we coordinated exploration of farms, and forays to scavenge more ammo and medical kits to assist in our progress in discovering what had happened. The 80's vibe is a nice touch, though I wish the boombox played random real 80's hits when you set it off to divert the robots. All in all something a bit different, and a nicely paced exploration shooter, that will keep you wanting to just check out that one more next farm, military base or town.

Generation Zero's setting (rural Sweden '89) is an original and bold choice which has paid off for team Avalanche Studios who were previously responsible for some AAA titles like Mad Max, Just Cause franchise as well as the more pique Hunter: call of the wild. It is the latter which this game bears most similarities to. The environment in which the game takes place is inspired because it's the definition of the great outdoors; there are beech and spruce forests to meander through, abandoned villages to explore, farms to investigate, hidden underground nuclear bunkers to trespass. You feel like a kid again marching across the countryside as you are encouraged to take directions which are often off the beaten path to watch and plan your strategy of attack against the marauding machines.I prefer playing the single player game but multiplayer certainly adds an extra layer of teamplay. The whole tone of the game too is northern European set low-key, simple and effective in its ability to create an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue with its subtle Scandinavian-noir. Thankfully, all the audio is in Swedish so we can tell we're in the countryside of 80s Sweden. This isn't a Hollywood version of a post apocalyptic world full of brash characters instead we are in the hi-tops of an Swedish everyman. It feels more familiar to a European and its landscape is sharply observed. If you have played so-called 'walking-sims' like dear Esther, Rapture much of the unhurried pacing of this game will be welcome as it doesn't force you to make timely scripted decisions. I bought the collector's edition simply because there is nothing quite like this game on console that I have experienced before except maybe GSC Game World's S.T.A.L.K.E.R but that was on a PC. That brings me to the reasons why I deduced one star: There are not enough survival aspects in this game. There should be things like tinned food to collect to keep our character from getting hungry (there is a lot of walking), hunting for rabbits and other game, bottled water sources from streams to keep thirst away. It would add to the immersion of our character participating in a day-to-day fight for survival and effort put into making her/him stay alive. So much of the character profile design appears to be about how players may choose to dress obviously influenced by trends in battle royale games, and is in particular implemented badly. Nowadays, a distinct identity for Generation Zero is necessary if it is itself to survive in a video game market saturated by endless battle royale and sci-fi games. My hope for Generation Zero is its continual evolution and eventual success as an action-survival sim. Whether it achieves that through the release of quality DLC with further updates to the quantity of strategic choices during battlefield encounters or better survival simulation to improve player experience remains to be seen. 4/5

This is a good game, I bought it knowing it was not a AAA game, and was created without the multi million dollar budgets of other titles, so I didnt expect amazing or awesome. What I did get was a good fun shooter that has elements of suspense for the player, keeping them on the edge, just waiting and expecting that coming attack from wondering foe.I have only played single player and I was a bit worried about the story with this as there had not been too much written about the story line but what I have found was a nice plot which I am still working through with just the right amount of side missions.Graphically the game is stunning with great day/night cycle and weather effects. There are a few let downs as was to be expected though, the copy pasted buildings are a bit of a disappointment and it can be a bit repetitive for some players.Overall I like it and its a game I keep going back to, there has already been one patch from the developers after they have received customer feedback which is a good sign of the developer caring for the product and community. I hope this continues and the game improved over time. I can see good things with this one

I see a lot of negative reviews for this game but am surprised. The visuals are amazing and so far I am enjoying exploring the vast open world and the dynamic weather and day/night cycle. The missions are interesting and guide you further through the world. At first I died a lot or wasted ammo but then I worked out some tactics. It's definitely a stealth strategy game, the enemy AI is aggressive but you can use the environment and buildings to your advantage. Not run into any bugs so far but I think some have been fixed through updates. Have played solo and multiplayer, enjoyed both. I think may be it's one of those love or hate type games like Marmite. Use stealth and evasion tactics to minimize your ammo expenditure.Even areas with a lot of enemy AI sometimes you can time your entry get into a building and take them out in cover. I look forward to any future updates to this game. It's hard to categorise this game so these are words I would use to describe the game 'stealth, strategy, evasion, distraction, realism, survival, scenic, atmospheric, challenging'. I debated buying this for a long time and then when I did I wasn't disappointed at all.

If you like spending much of your time crouched in a bush nervously scanning neighbouring fields through worn binoculars and nursing a handfull of bullets. Then to plot a series of breathless manoeuvres from cobblestone wall to tree to ditch to shed under darkening skies. Then you might well have your mind blown. If you are looking for a faced paced fps then you will be disappointed. It is certainly not for everyone. It is very difficult and slow going especially in solo as i’m playing, there are a few rough edges, the sparse houses all look like they were put together from the same 80’s IKEA catalogue and the AI once alerted is basically psychic.I doubt that I will finish it but even the 15 hours I have played so far have been some of the best on the ps4 this year and well worth the price.Weather effects, lightening, music and audio are all excellent. I haven’t seen any bugs with the game patched up to date.

I've updated my review. Since the major update the terrible graphics glitches and creature clipping issues appear to have been corrected. Game has a significantly different atmosphere but is still brutally hard playing solo. Menu system still doesn't auto group like items into the same slot which, combined with the inability to truly pause the game, makes inventory management, levelling up and reading the log files hard work. Makes sense for a multiplayer focussed title and is similar to other games.

I'm shocked at the price.. shocking no one is buying this game it's so different to anything I have ever played. It's set in the 80 s but feels it's set in the future... because of these annoying but fun robots to shut down .. with vintage weapons... Music fits lovely with the game also... I'm only playing in single mode. Which is stupid hard.. but loads of fun sneaking around in the dark.. so much to look at places to go things to collect.. I love it myself..

This came to a surprise that this game is truly fantastic, not only is the gameplay smooth but also the graphics are truly wonderful - one of the best graphics I've seen on the PS4 and its not even a triple A title. This game is not perfect but the developers have made it clear that they will be updating this game frequently (already has a patch already)The map is huge, there is multiplayer, tons to loot and player customization - give it a go!

We love this game. Open World Shooter With stealth. A slower paced shooter than most which we like. The Enemy Are Killer Robots and the AI is good once spotted run or fight. Search for weapons/first aid/upgrades..A Large open world To Explore Set In 1980s Sweden so older type weapons. A new game in the genre which is good.Graphics & Sound are average and under £30 so very pleased with this game..8/10...
