I have the Fuji XF 18-55 f2.8 to f4 lens - a great little lens and generally pretty sharp throughout its range. Also very light to use.But it doesn't have weather sealing. So when I saw the Fujinon XF16-80mmF4 R OIS WR I got very excited!More range AND weather sealed. But could Fuji defy the laws of physics and combine more range without effecting sharpness? The answer I'm afraid is no.I took a LOT of comparison shots - around the house, in the garden and various other places. I made multiple shots and compared the two lenses. As I'm lazy I only compared at commonly used apertures - for me mostly its f5.6 or f8.At the wide end the old 18-55 was sharper both in the centre and at the edges of the frame.I compared at 18mm vs 16mm and also both set to 18mm.The 18-55 was clearly sharper. However when I compared at the telephoto end ( 55mm vs 55mm ) the differences were much smaller - to the point of really not being important.I re-did my tests a few times and got the same result each time. I even blind tested - not knowing which lens took which image and just picked the best. The best at the wide side was always the 18-55.Don't get me wrong - the 16-80 is not a soft terrible lens. If you are not pixel peeping and had no other lens to compare it to, then I think you'd be perfectly happy with the 16-80.I desperately wanted the new lens to be just as good as the 18-55 and was disappointed slightly when it wasn't

This lens remains sharp across the zoom range and offers excellent optical image stabilisation. Optical quality at the wide end is very good (for a versatile zoom lens) and comes close to the FUJI 16mm 2.8 prime lens (Note: the prime lens offers higher shutter speeds in low light conditions in a very compact form factor) Optical quality at the Telephoto end is excellent and provides good subject isolation for portrait images (Note: Image edges are slightly softer at the wide and tele end, this is to be expected for this type of lens).Other lenses to consider18-55mm F2.8-4 This lens is smaller and less expensive, provides similar optical quality, but has a narrower zoom range and is not weather/dust sealed (I had a live bug get in mine!crawling across the rear of the front element).18-135mm f3.5-5.6 This lens has a wider zoom range (Possibly more suited for travel?) but is also larger and not quite as sharp, throughout the zoom range. To achieve the best quality image, select an Electronic Front Curtain shutter mode, if available (e.g. EF+M+E on the XT3), as with most camera systems micro vibrations (from the Mechanical Shutter) at certain speeds, can sometimes be mistaken for lens softness (more noticeable at the tele end). The EF modes are intended to negate this effect.

OK where to start? Firstly if you go to my Flickr pages there are many examples of images taken with this lens. I have owned the 18-55 f2.8-4 and the 16-55 f2.8 previously to this lens and my findings are as follows...Image quality - at least on a par with the 18-55 in the shared focal ranges, diminishing a little beyond 70mm with a very small drop off in sharpness at 16mm but only in the corners. When pixel peeping the 16-55 is slightly sharper throughout. Bear in mind that to obtain maximum sharpness from the 16-55 you will really need to shoot on a tripod whereas the 16-80 has excellent OIS. Build quality - very good, weather resistant and feels solid.I would say falls between the other two lenses but the trade off with the 16-55 is the increase in weight. OIS - None of course in the 16-55, I would say the 18-55 is good for about 3 stops, I have tested the 16-80 at all focal lengths and find an average of about 5 stops. If you are the lucky owner of a Fuji XT4 then of course you will benefit from it"s built in I S. Value - The best value of the three, especially in kit form.

The lens is super versatile, being able to capture from nice portraits at 80mm/f4 with good subject separation to landscapes at 12mm/f4-f8 and even close ups at 80mm/f4-f8. OIS works great enabling shutter speeds from 1/4 and faster and sharpness is very at center at all focal lengths (check the cat picture). Yes, corners are not super sharp at 12mm/f4 but things improve at f5.6 and f8. Build quality is also great, although I would prefer to have an OIS button. It is my favorite Fuji X lens and the one that made me move totally from m43 to Fuji.

For me this lens has been a great upgrade to the XF18-55mm - it is sharper, has better colour contrast and considerably less CA (if any in most of the time). The stabilization is simply epic and so compensates quite a bit for the F4 nature of the lens. The lens also focuses very quickly and very accurately plus it has nice looking out of focus elements too. Contrary to some peoples reviews I also find the performance to be very good in the 55 to 80 range.
