This lens wasn't entirely a surprise to me. I had briefly tried one at a Calumet open day and managed sharp test shots in bad light, at very high isos, at 1/20 sec, at the long end, handheld. At the time I thought there must be something wrong with the metadata. It's true, AF was a little slow, although latest firmware has improved matters rather more than I might have expected, but it's image stabiliser is second to none - and I'm familiar with Canon L-series - furthermore it is able to produce far superior results wide-open and isn't demonstrably weak at 200mm, as many similar lenses tend to be. Resolution of fine detail is a shock after years of Canon zooms - an absolute revelation, perilously close to prime lens territory. The lens feels solid and well made: it doesn't slide if you point the camera straight up or down, the zoom ring has the right amount of resistance and the manual focus ring also feels tactile and responsive.Criticism? No focus limiter, which really would have been useful. No facility for a tripod collar - this lens isn't entirely happy hanging off my X-E2 on the tripod; it would be much more balanced and less strained with a collar. The plastic lenshood isn't metal and resists installation, which can be annoying when time is short. The lens isn't especially quiet, but then other Fuji lenses aren't, either. Fuji's new teleconvertor is NOT compatible with this lens, which was something of a disappointment. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the predictive AF is unusable - the one (and only, in my view) area the Canon lenses win by miles - it must be said this, too, is a Fuji failing and is not limited to this lens. If you need speed, an instant and unhesitating lock-on target, then this is NOT for you, but if your photography is less urgent you will find focussing accuracy is in another league.Positives? Small, light, astonishingly affordable, very, very sharp and AF is accurate in a way Canon just isn't. The stabiliser is purest black magic. Usable from wide open to f16 throughout it's range. I have owned a dozen lenses of a similar range over 25 years of photography, not all of them Canon, and I can honestly say this is by far the best.

Just about every review for this lens has been good - tack sharp and good colour rendition and tonal range, like most of the Fujinon glass. It's not inexpensive, but the quality shines out. I have added a couple of test shots, taken at either end of the focal range and at minimum apertures in each case. I cropped the 55mm shot, but it is sharp at f4.5 and with more dof that I thought it would have. At 200mm, f6.5 it is still extremely sharp, with nicely out of focus background and just going out of focus foreground. Of course, sharpness isn't everything and I would say that with portraiture at say, 100mm, you will need to choose your background carefully to ensure that it is out of focus and not distracting, but then, this is not really a portraiture lens, but you could make it work as such with a bit of effort. It is a bit of a compromise, from this point of view, naturally so - compare it with the f4 50-140mm at twice the price and the 90mm and you realise that you are buying a non-specialist lens, but one that is good for a lot of stuff where sharpness is important from landscapes to still life and product type shots. The lens-hood feels a tad flimsy, but fits well and should do its job. The lens construct feels first class and although the f4.5/6.3 is not the fastest in class, I am not in the least bothers since I expect to shoot around f8/11 most of the time. I haven't tested it on shots a 100 metres away which will be another test and one affected by the sort of day it is and atmospheric conditions, because I don't expect to use it for that type of shot, but I might do on holiday or such like, but then the weather is likely to be good. I do want to try out some landscapes though, so this is a test to come: for now, I find this lens nothing less than excellent.

An excellent buy for my Fuji XT1. The focal length range is ideal for me and when you consider that there is an effective "multiplication factor" because of the small sensor on my camera. this is even better. It takes over where my standard 18 -55 mm lens leaves off. I haven't had my lens long, but on first use it seems crisp in operation and just as sharp as my Nikon lenses. It is easy to use and is light and doesn't take up much space in my camera bag. I love it!That said there are a couple of points to mention:1. The maximum aperture ranges from f3.5 to f4.8 so it isn't as fast as some other lenses. To counter-balance this point I would add that the image stabilisation (OIS)is great and the Fuji cameras work well at relatively high ISOs with little noise.2. Again, because of the relatively small maximum aperture, it is more difficult to blur the background than with some other wider-aperture lenses. However coupling it up with a small extension tube should overcome this and help to bring the focus forward too (minimum focus distance is about 6 ft). However don't be tempted by a cheap non-Fuji tube set, as I was initially. (I couldn't get them to fit on this lens so I had to return them and opt for purchasing a Fuji tube instead)Read full review...

Purchased along with 16-55 prior to two week holiday in Tuscany to attend Palio horse race in Siena and take some fast moving images.Swithered between Fuxi XF 50-140, 2.8 and this lens for my Xt-1Read reviews about sharpness and opted for this due to extra 60 mm length and lightness not to mention much cheaper with cash back on two lens purchase.Outstanding clarity images , sharp as a tack ,and great depth of field separation to rival full frame zoomsSo glad I went for this.Slightly stiff zoom (cf other Fuji zooms ) slows action a little but consequently no zoom creep and easy to adjustIt may be lightweight but not in terms of sharpness,I could pick out faces/expressions on very fast moving horse riders and in a crowd of thousands at 300 metres !Balances well with grip on Fuji Xt-1Add it to your lens collection, you won't be disappointed but cannot guarantee you won't want to add the 50-140 also !

When I purchased my XM-1 with 18-55 zoom kit lens, there was an offer where you could apply and get this lens for free direct from Fuji.I thought at the time that it might be useful on occasion for distant subjects, but I have found that it is on the camera much more frequently. The quality of the lens is just superb. On my XM-1 at 1:1 view in Lightroom, the definition is incredible. I've also found it useful for shooting portraits and candids, as you can pull the subject up in the frame without sticking the camera in their face. The build quality is excellent, it all feels very positive and well-made and the production finish is excellent. Naturally, I would have liked a wider aperture,or a constant aperture throughout the zoom range, but it's not been a huge problem. It's an incredible lens, I love it.

There are a few options for mid range telephoto zooms from Fuji but this lens is exceptional. I have owned and used lots of Canon "L" glass including the 70-200 2.3 and the 70-200 f4 and the 300 f4 and 400 f5.6. This Fuji lens is better than all of them, its as sharp, has exceptional colour saturation and micro contrast, the image stabilization is better and its half the price. Build quality is very solid and the lens feels like it will last forever. The only slight negative is that the zoom mechanism is much stiffer than most other lenses i've used but it works and it does not slip. People are obsessed with buying new camera bodies mostly they dont improve your images much, but a lens like this will give you a big step up in image quality.

This is the very first lens that I bought when I switched from my Canon system of many many years, to Fuji. It fits my Fuji X-T1 and X-T3 no problem. The darker of the two images is straight out of the camera (shot in RAW) at ISO3200 and there is a wee bit of noise but not much. The lighter of the two images is after some very basic editing in Lightroom and you can see that the noise is gone. You can see from the venue that the ambient conditions were not ideal and the camera was hand held because no tripods allowed - hence having to use ISO 3200 to get something. It's not the fastest lens but hey, faster = heavier and much more expensive.I have not regretted buying this lens and I would definitely recommend it to others.

Switched to Fuji from Canon kit. Have to say the quality of the images are excellent, auto-focus is fast and the lens feels super solid and well built.Upgraded the Camera (X-T10) and Lens firmware after purchase and I have not suffered any of the auto-focus related issues others mention. I note most of the auto-focus related posts are a few years old 2013 etc. so something positive seems to have changed in that time.Agreed that the plastic lens hood feels a bit cheap and that the lens covers from Fuji are a nightmare especially, i.e. they fall off a the least touch if you have a UV filter screwed in but all that aside I still have to give it 5 because of the images, construction and usability.

All of the Fuji XF lenses are overpriced, compared to the Canon/Nikon DSLR equivalents. Unfortunately, this has to be accepted whilst Fuji are able to maintain their monopoly over lenses available with the XF mount. This lens is no exception, but the performance is very good, and the AF (on an XT-1) is on a par with Canon L performance. Lens hood is a bit fiddly to reverse fit, but due to it's shape and length offers good protection to the lens when out and about. Optically it is fine - and aperture is fast enough for most everyday use, and although a faster aperture would be useful, the weight penalty would be significant for this format.

I also have the XC50-230mm which i also think is very good but this lens has far better OIS making for a much higher percentage of keeper photos. The other improvement is in the colour and contrast, it can be subtle but they are both definitely improved (trees can look surprisingly more lifelike). Lastly the focusing is better probably due to being a brighter lens. Value wise I think the XC50-230mm is 'maybe' better but I am actually happy with them both. The only downside of the XF55-200mm is its weight - it is not quite so grab and go on a whim as the lighter XC version.

Again not purchased from Amazon got mine from Fuji refurbished, using this on both the X E! and XT 1 bodies the auto focus is a little slow on the X E! and not great on the XT but if your not shooting sport then no issue. This lens does shine on the image quality and even though the aperture isn't great the Fuji bodies can handle cranking up the ISO so don't fret too much about it. I have used this for wedding, portrait and street work and am really happy with it, I can't fault it and if you need super fast auto focus you need to sell your Fuji kit and buy a DSLR

This is a truly epic lens. It is certainly the best telephoto zoom I've ever owned, and that includes Canon and Olympus glass. The image quality is outstanding, plus the closest focus distance makes this a usable alternative to a macro for some shots (eg, close ups of insects fro a few feet away). Take a look at this image taken with this lens - and that's why I'd say it's the "bee's kness" http://33.media.tumblr.com/f73859b2d04e497ab868104375c7ff4a/tumblr_nah036TyXp1tjdg5po1_1280.jpg

For me, this lens hits the sweet spot between picture quality, build quality, price, and portability. Images are excellent and the product has a solid, quality feel. Cost is modest (especially if you can take advantage of one of the promotional offers Fujifilm run quite often), and last but not least the lens feels very comfortable to carry on my X-T2 with Fujifilm Vertical Power Booster Grip. (I highly recommend the latter for all X-T2 users anyway.)

Used this lens for a couple of years now. Love it. I have always found it reliable, tough (I often take it up hills/mountains and it copes brilliantly in all kinds of weather) and the images are sharp and crisp, even at 200mm. AF can be a bit slow and frustrating at times but I can easily cope with this, I got plenty of great action shots at my son's school sports day for example. Brilliant lens and at a decent price... relatively.

Fuji have built another winner with the 55-200mm for the X range of cameras. It's got true pro qualities: no distortion, solid build, high resolution, image stabilization, and a pretty quick focus making the mirrorless Fuji X camera range a great lighter weight travel option over my Canon SLR system for all but fast moving wildlife subjects, such as birds, where the Canon continuos focus mode still out performs fuji.
