This lens seems to be something of a 'marmite' lens amongst the Fuji community online, with detractors mocking it as too big and heavy (hence why some on DPReview call it 'the brick'), and fans calling it 'a bag of primes'. With such hyperbole it is hard to cut through the opinion and get to the fact of the matter about just how good or bad this lens is. I have been a Fuji X shooter ever since the X-E1 and have now tested this lens on my X-E2 and X-T1 quite comprehensively. Other lenses I own or have owned, and which I can compare it to, include the 18-55 zoom and the 14, 23 1.4, 35 1.4 and 56 1.2 Fuji primes. Let's get one thing out of the way right now - yes this lens is quite large and fairly heavy, compared to the much more compact and lighter 18-55 lens. Now that 18-55 lens quite rightly is regarded very highly, because it is excellent - arguably the best 'kit' zoom lens offered on any system - a good copy is sharp, has decent bokeh, is built really well, and the in-lens stabilisation is good for maybe 3-4 stops, so it's overall a great lens. Why then go for this bigger, heavier and more expensive lens, which does not include image stabilisation? Well the 24-70 f2.8 lens is a staple for most serious/pro shooters on full frame, and this lens provides a 24 - 82.5mm full frame equivalent focal length range. Having a fast f2.8 lens allows you to shoot at lower ISO speeds in darker environments, compared to a slower zoom like the 18-55. It also allows greater flexibility in creating those shallow depth of field shots with nice bokeh (bakground blur). I can confirm that the bokeh on this lens is generally excellent - very good for portraits actually, even though it is not as stellar as the bokeh on the star portrait lenses in the Fuji line up, such as the 56mm 1.2 or 90mm f2. I can also confirm that the resolution of this lens when shot wide open is excellent - even at the 55mm end I find it good enough for professional portrait work, with superb resolution, good bokeh, and an overall pleasing image rendition. The lens renders quite a hight contrast image (rather like some Zeiss lenses), with slightly cooler colours than some of the primes such as the 35mm f1.4. Both the wide and tele ends offer excellent resolution and although the corners suffer a bit wide open at the wide end, they still hold a decent amount of resolution. In comparison to the 24-70 f2.8 full frame lenses I have used on Canon, Nikon and Sony systems, this lens holds up very well in terms of resolution and bokeh in my view. Build is excellent overall, and includes weather sealing. The aperture ring has an excellent, solid feel to it, better actually than some of the aperture rings on some Fuji prime lenses, and the zoom ring is nicely dampened. In terms of weight and size it remains significantly smaller than any similar full frame lens. It balances well on an X-T1 or X-T2 but even better if you add a battery grip. Balance on an X-E model, in my view, is not so great, as it is front heavy in that scenario. Overall, easy to recommend this lens as a single lens solution for a photo day trip or vacation, or as I use it, for pro work as well, when you don't necessarily want to carry a bag of lenses. AF on this lens is near totally silent and very fast (and accurate) especially with the X-Pro 2, X-T1 and X-T2. One final issue to consider - does it suffer because it has no OIS ? I can handhold this lens (at the wide end) down to about 1/15 and get decent shots, lower than that I get too much camera shake. I am generally quite well practiced at handholding large lenses but my 48 year-old hands are not as steady as they once were. So generally I would say it doesn't suffer too badly for not having OIS, especially when you consider it's f2.8, so quite fast. Just take a little time to practice with it and you should be fine. Would I get this lens instead of Fuji primes? No, for me, part of the joy of the Fuji X system is the sublime primes like the 14, 16, the 56 .2 etc - they have character and are wonderful. But for times when you don't want to carry lots of lenses, then this is a great substitute, and it does not involve much compromise when it comes to IQ, if any.CAPSULE SUMMARY:-PROS:- Excellent build, good AF, excellent manual aperture ring, good resolution, even at f2.8, nice contrast, smaller than full frame equivalents, very useful walkaround focal length range.CONS:- Expensive (?) - in comparison to the Fuji 18-55, but not necessarily in comparison to comparable offerings from Canon or Nikon, no OIS (optical image stabilisation), bigger and heavier than Fuji 18-55 and Fuji primes in the same focal length range. With regards to the lack of OIS, note there are strong rumours that a new Fuji X-T body is coming maybe 2018 with in-body stabilisation, so this weakness could be a moot point when that happens.

I LOVE this lens. It's now my main walk around, go-to all rounder, and it's stunning - image quality, handling, and build wise. I also have the 18-55 so I'm well aware of the differences between the two. I wasnt sure about buying this lens after reading all the comments about how big and heavy it is, but frankly if you value image quality over versatility and can afford the extra, the choice is a no brainer. In terms of size its considerably lighter than the Nikon 17-55 I used with DSLRs, and I dont find its size the issue others make out. It is quite a wide lens, but I find that makes it nicer to hold when shooting - it just feels good and, well, solid. (Slight caveat - I do have big hands). The lack of OIS isn't a deal breaker for me either although it would be a nice option. The fixed 2.8 aperture goes some way to cancel the need out, but then that's why this lens is the size it is. I've found that the difference in image quality between the 18-55 and the 16-55 is visible - even without pixel peeping - this lens is sharper at low apertures and exhibits better contrast in most lighting situations. It's truly a professional grade lens and feels reassuringly like it wont let you down.I always find one lens in my kit that stays on the camera most of the time, and the 16-55 is it. Overall I'd say if you were choosing between the 18-55 and the 16-55 and you value image quality over versatility, it's no contest.

I moved from the Nikon to the Fujifilm system. In the past I have had a chequered history with standard zooms. I owned the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 which cost a lot but was, in my opinion, overated - not in sharpness, but build quality. In my ownership it was in for repair on numerous occasions having 2 x zoom mechanisams replaced. It also let me down on a number of occasions prior to neededing repairs. This put me off standard zooms but this 16-55mm Fujfilm (24-85mm approx, if it was full frame) seems to be built very well and despite it smaller size (compared to the Nikon) has a re-assuringly robost feeling.I have used this on a Fujifilm X-H1 with which is balances very well and with the X-H1's built in OIS/IBIS you have an extremely versitile setup.I will admit though, when I put it on my X-T1, it did feel a bit out of place - that camera works much better with smaller lenses like the 35mm f/2 (which I have also reviewed).Time will tell on the build quality, but as for image quality - here's a lens you can use at f/2.8 with confidence - you do not need to stop down. It's very sharp. The zoom ring is easy to use and it focuses fast enough to use constant focusing on fast moving subjects on the X-H1 - one of the few XF lenses which will do this in my experience.Overall 5 out 5, but will try to review again in a few months so I can comment on longevity.

ive been a fuji shooter for the past 5 years and after buying all the F2 lenses i bought the fuji xf16-55 mm lens and ive have used it now for a few years now for weddings and personal usage like holidays etc and my conclusion is that most people say it is just too heavy!! Well dnt forget it is a red badge zoom lens its way better made than nikon or cannon plastic lenses, this is a pro lens. I find it produces very similar image quality as my prime lens, at 16mm focal length its way sharper than any prime lens but as you zoom the image quality suffers a bit but still nearly matches the best primes!! This is a must have zoom lens for travel and where we carnt use our feet to zoom using prime lenses, way better than fuji kit lens xf18-55,this lens is wr with a constant aperture of 2.8 which is great for low light, great lens buy this and the fuji XF23mm as your compact kit, thats all you need, and update your camera software before you mount any lens. google .....optical limits fuji. There you can see the mtf charts yourself that this zoom leñs is the sharpest lens at 16mm of all.. yes it has no ois stabalisation but keep your shutter speed no less than 1/60th second then all your images will be tack sharp like mine ive shown.

Fantastic quality lens, purchased priory to two week holiday in Tuscany: produced outstanding landscapes despite strong light dynamics. Most used lens amongst Fuji 10-24, 27, 35mm & 55-200 zoom.Clarity and brightness rivals best of best primes and zooms i.e. Nikon 24-70 imhoBuild quality outstanding though heavier than other Fuji lenses but I am used to a Nikon D800, 24-70 combo so it is lightweight by comparison.Battery grip is recommended to balance out (as well address shorter battery life in CSC's)Low light performance great did not miss OIS function.Fast auto focus and very accurate.Combination with XT1 is outstanding and produces better and more usable out of camera images especially inlow light at 6400 iso.Buy one

Firstly, if you’ve come from DSLRs this lens is not big or heavy. Yes, compared to other Fuji lenses it’s bigger but it’s still very reasonably sized for a constant fast aperture.Secondly, the image quality is amazing - it effectively replaces a number of Fuji primes and is certianly an improvement on the 18-55mm.Finally, the autofocus is very fast and much improved over the kit lens. The eye and face detect work incredibly well with this lens and the autofocus speed in low light is great.Overall, I think that if you’ve come from an SLR set up the lens size won’t bother you but the image quality and performance are incredible.

When you get the picture right this lens is amazing BUT the lack of Image Stabilisation is a disappointment. This lens will get far better pictures than the other Fuji zooms outdoors or in good light as you will be able to shoot fast. When the light drops I now just use my primes as the weight of the lens combined with no OIS means it is not the ideal lens. All the same when it does hot the mark the shots are so sharp you could cut yourself on them.

This lens is a masterpiece. I have never seen anything like it. I have owned almost all the systems in the past with several lenses. The construction of this lens is unbelievable. Heavy yes, but the performance is like carrying all the equivalent prime lenses with you in one bag. I sold the 14/2.8, 18/2, 27/2.8,35/1.4,56/1.2 and I only kept this guy and the 90/2, in my opinion the best 2 Fujinon lenses. With the new 24mp sensor it will be amazing.

In terms of image quality this lens is nothing short of amazing. After only one day with it I have no problem in saying that this is the best Fuji X lens I've ever used. It's almost as sharp as my 35mm f/1.4 and 56mm f1.2 for me Fuji's crispest lens and that sharpness is right across the frame from corner to corner, it's truly an amazing lens!

1.3.2019

Amazing lens! If you have a fujifilm camera this is a no brainier! Sooooo sharp! Just look at the picture I’ve added, yes it’s a bit expensive but you get what you pay for. I use this for video as well and it performs excellent, very quiet autofocus, and snappy!

26.4.2017

Absolute best fuji lens anyone who says theres not much difference between this and the 18-55 2.8-f4 are kidding themselves and its cheap when you think all the lenses it covers

3.3.2018

I absolutely love this lens. Versatile focal length with sharpness throughout. A tad heavy, but without it I would have to carry at least 3 prime lenses to cover the range.

23.10.2015

Awesome lens. Absolutely fantastic. Coupled it up with a Fuji X-T1, what a combination. I'm one happy snapper!t quality lens

22.5.2018

Outstanding lens, made even better buying via Amazon as you can usually get a Fuji rebate. Thumbs up to Amazon and Fuji

30.7.2019

I use this lens and the 50-140mm and I can't see me ever needing or wanting any other lenses ever again. Superb lens.
