The game looks great - the designers deserve great praise for excellently detailed and carefully designed environments. But the gameplay is a joke, the AI: well, there isn't any, and the story is paper-thin. It's a ripoff.Gameplay.Totally linear - just run and gun. There are plenty of boss fights, but in every single case you will find yourself in a position where you can see him but he can't see you, so you just keep shooting (he won't react) until he's dead. This is because the physics is all wrong. There are plenty of things that fall over or swing round or do other real life stuff, but in real life you can't achieve a situation where you can look down your sights at an enemy but he can't do the same to you.In the world of El Matador, light does not travel in straight lines.AI.As mentioned, if you can find a place where you can just see an enemy then most likely he can't see you at all. If he can't see you, he won't react, not even to 50-odd gunshot wounds in the torso. He won't react if his mate standing in front of him gets shot. In many cases, enemies only become "live" when you have crossed some invisible scripting point - you can shoot them all you like before that and nothing will happen. This all adds up to AI that is about 5 years behind the times.Story.There is one plot twist, and it is a seen-it-all-before tired old cliche. There is no story, there's just a series of tenuously connected missions.Other aspects.Load times are quite long. Even quick saving during games causes an appreciable delay. The game regularly crashes to desktop. It is very short - about half the length of a standard full price PC game. There are 6 missions, divided into separate chapters, but 12 would feel like value for money. This doesn't.Overall.Looks great, plays averagely, over quickly. If you are desperate for a first-person shooter fix (I am, I am!) then it may be worth a try.
