I've been a Cluedo fan for many years and have lots of editions of the game. This new edition is the one announced earlier this year when the demise of Mrs White made the national news. Great publicity! The new character is the bright purple-themed Dr Orchid, a younger woman with hints of an ethnic background. I do think that Cluedo is ageing well and appealing to a wider audience, especially in these days of more sophisticated Euro-style games. It has added more sophisticated game mechanics without changing the game too much and at the same time appeals to younger gamers with trendier-looking characters.Positives first: The board art. Wow. This edition celebrates the return of the classic board layout and classic rooms. There are no patios, spas, swimming pools or observatories here, and the art is possibly the best ever. The corridors are plain, as they should be, and the room art is highly detailed and attractive. The board doesn't look gaudy or cluttered at all, so top marks for that. It looks very classy.Player tokens are unique and detailed, not cartoonish, and an improvement on recent versions but not the best we've ever seen. I only wish they were a bit heavier and more substantial. They're a huge improvement on the laughable 2001 monolith slabs from 'Discover The Secrets' but not as good as the painted figures from the green-boxed Parker edition of around 15 years ago.The clue card mechanic works well. Whenever a 1 is rolled on a die (a magnifying glass icon), the player draws a clue card and follows the instructions. These cards cause minor things to happen, most of them requiring the player with a specified card to reveal it and keep it face up on the table for all to see. This has the effect of speeding up the game somewhat as cards are revealed more quickly. Some of the cards do have silly names however, such as DUM DUUUM DUUUUUUM! This mechanic can be ignored and the rulebook suggests not using the cards if players want to play a classic game. What I like about it is that it doesn't change the board in any way; there are no unsightly clue spaces dotted around for players to land on as there were in previous recent editions. The clue card mechanic uses only the dice. The rulebook is detailed and very much an improvement. It includes suggestions such as recording who the player has shown cards to and which cards have been shown by which player; these are things only advanced players would consider. A nice touch is a note regarding the 'reopening of the mansion'; a reference to the returning classic board layout. There are other hints and tips in the book which impressed me. On the last pages are the now obligatory character biographies which add a bit of flavour. There are some minor bad points. A Wrench! Classic rooms might be back but the classic spanner is gone. In terms of the game piece it's been gone for some time so at least the name and picture on the card now matches the piece. Also, the characters seem to get younger with each edition - is this really necessary? Colonel Mustard is now the only character who looks over 30. The others look like they should be in a Twilight movie. Mrs Peacock looks barely old enough to be married. This might be a little off-putting for older groups, but at least the classic names are back, albeit without Mrs White. This is probably a good compromise; older players will recognise the names while younger players will identify with the images and won't care that the names have been around for decades.I wish the cards were better quality. Older Waddingtons editions had proper cards of playing-card quality that could last for years but there is no plastic coating or linen effect here. They're also a bit on the small side. The designs aren't too bad but I'd prefer images that aren't so cartoony. The room cards do look very classy, but I don't like the large font.Overall, this is probably the best version of the modern classic game for the last 15 years. It is certainly an improvement over Discover The Secrets and the previous one with all the connected rooms and the garage. But it's still not as good as the last two Waddingtons-branded editions from the 1990s.

We actually own several versions of this game, from the very first UK edition put out by Waddingtons to a travel edition made in the 2000's, various spin off versions , to the 2012 edition, and now this one. This one is basically an update to the looks of the game, with the novelty of a new character being added after retiring Mrs. White. Other than the character being a differnt person, the only difference the character change makes is nostalgic. The look of the board likewise has changed, though I wouldn't quite call it an update. Instead, the mansion returns the the classic layout without the fancy additions added to later versions. The art is lovely, with lots of rich detail tot eh rooms while the corridors are nice and plain, giving it a very classy feel. Sadly, the characters all seem to have aged in reverse again, with Col. Mustard being the only person who looks past his 20's, but no older than 30 something (what a young age to have become a colonel!) and the rest looking like they stepped from a movie aimed at the youth market (age wise they could be peers for the cast of Scooby Doo, Twilight, Divergent, etc). This version still has the Clue action cards, so if you liked that version of the rules, you can use them, or ignore them and simply play by the original rules. The Clue action card version of the game is different from before, with no card spaces on the board; getting a card depends solely on a specific roll of the dice (rolling a magnifying glass which is depicted on one side instead of a number). As for card quality, all of the cards, action cards and the traditional game cards, are smaller than they used to be and are not as good quality. The stock is not as robust and the finish is poorer, no plastic coating to help protect them from hand oils and spills nor any linen finish or anything like that. The cards are also smaller and the images a bit cartoonish compared to previous editions and some of the font choices are questionable presentation-wise.Having sat down a played this several times now with the kids, I asked their opinion. They enjoyed it well enough that they'd like to keep it at the caravan to play (they play the travel one in the car on long journeys), but say that they much prefer playing the original version (this one:

This is the 'Classic' Cluedo game which has been updated with …• New box cover artwork• Stunning new artwork on the game board• New Character - Dr. Orchid• Updated game character pieces• New clue cardsThe box contains:• Gameboard• 6 Plastic character pieces• 6 Weapons• 6 Character cards• 6 Weapon cards• 9 Room cards• 29 Clue cards• 1 Envelope• Pad of detective notebook sheets• 2 Dice• Instruction bookletAlthough the quality of the character pieces (made from thin plastic) and the weapon pieces (cheap metal and plastic) leave a lot to be desired, the rest of the game is great. I love the new artwork which is bright, colourful and well drawn, the cards are good quality and are also bright and colourful. The board is made from good quality thick card.Gameplay is as addictive as it always has been and I actually love the new clue cards, they really add another dimension to the game. Basically these twenty nine cards come into play after the role of the two dice. On each of the dice one of the sides shows a magnifying glass. If on your turn you throw the dice and one of the dice show falls with the magnifying glass is showing on the top, you take one of the clue cards, read it out and do what it says.An example of a clue card is :** All players reveal one card from their hand **As you can see, a clue card can be very helpful towards winning the game.I have always loved playing Cluedo and this version of the game is just as much fun as the original. It is suitable for two to six players and for ages 8 plus, our eleven year old daughter and our teenage boys have all enjoyed playing this game and I can see that this will become another favourite game to play over the Christmas period or on rainy days.

Cluedo has been a family favourite game in our house for some years -- well, other than a two or three year period when it was banned, following an altercation after a game in which, accidentally, three rooms were put in the envelope, rather than one suspect, one weapon and one room. It's gone down in family history that the murder was carried out by the study, in the lounge, using the ballroom. Angry words were exchanged.Anyway, this is the same Cluedo there has always been, with two changes. The first one is cosmetic only, in that Mrs White has been sacked, to be replaced by Dr Orchid. Obviously this makes no change at all to the gameplay. The more striking change in that,in an obvious attempt to speed up gameplay, there are now a number of cards which are kept facedown on the board whilst playing. One side of the dice is now a magnifying glass picture, and if you roll this, then you get to pick a card -- which will ask you (or somebody else) to do something that will help solve the mystery. At first I was unsure about this, but it does rather move the game along when it happens, which is good.We really like this, and especially the imrpovement with the 'clue cards'. I see that some other reviewers have commented on the quality of the set; well, it's all okay. Obviously there are more expensive versions that have better quality pieces, etc, but if you just want a standard version of the (slightly changed) game that you can play with the family, this is perfect. Good stuff, and I'm sure we'll be finding it out again at Christmas.

The premise of the game is timeless, Agatha Christie's Miss Marple crossed with Hercule Poirot - much of the gist of it already installed in the nation's psyche. Running out of the notepads often means the boxed game is abandoned, although they are available to buy again. Playing with the family sharpens up memory skills, encourages lots of laughter and sleuthing, keeps the family around the table together instead of off in their rooms staring at screens, clicking and typing; always a better idea, especially over winter holidays. Paying attention to children (it's suggested they should be from 8 up) and being present with them, is a gift they treasure. This updated set, made in China, has a sturdy foldaway board, boring moulded figures in the required different colours, dressed accordingly to their pictures, to identify them - they look as if they have fallen out of a cornflake packet really. The weapons are slightly heavier and more impressive, being light metal and plastic. The cards are thick enough and the illustrations are good, although the characters look as if they live in the US. The dicey are weighty and of good quality. The one tear off pad of necessary check sheets (Detective notebook sheets) is ok; the directions for play are written in good English, with many helpful tips. In this country Hasbro is based in Middlesex which makes it feel like a UK product. Altogether it has picked up on the popular idea of Murder Mystery Weekend house parties rather well. All in all I rather like this latest incarnation of Cluedo.

About a year ago, I picked up a classic version of Cluedo in a charity shop and introduced my daughters to one of my favourite board games. They fell in love with it immediately, although my eldest soon worked out a few game tactics which eluded the younger which made the game slightly imbalanced. We played it regularly until one of the cards got ripped and another disappeared between one games night and another and it has been resigned to the back of the cupboard ever since. This new, tweaked version is a little different from the game I know and love, but it's not all necessarily bad. I personally find it a little weird playing any form of Cluedo without Mrs White, but that is the reality - the old housekeeper having been usurped by Dr Orchid, a female scientist, who is much younger and more glamorous, but not necessarily better - personally I always quite liked the idea of a murderous old cook putting down her rolling pin for the candlestick....One of the new tweaks is the introduction of Clue cards, which is a fun and unpredictable element of the game, which when someone rolls the dice and it shows a magnifying glass, then a clue card will give an instruction, e.g. the person with a specific card must show everyone else the card. This spices up the game play a little and my younger daughter loves it, but you don't have to use the cards if you don't want to - you can play the standard version (although we haven't as yet, as the cards are a hit!)

I love this game. Everyone and anyone can play it and it always gets quite competitive with each player trying to work out the mystery but also outfox other players. I like trying to lead people into the wrong direction, although sometimes this can get complicated. One thing that I don't remember from my original version is the bonus cards. The dice have question marks on them, and when rolled, the player must pick up a card this then has an action on it like "Rev Green has been very quiet, the person holding the Rev Green card must reveal it and place it upturned in front of the board". Another change is that Mrs White the housekeeper has gone, replaced by the mysterious Dr Orchid,I quite liked this change. All other characters remain the same, although they have little plastic figurines instead of the traditional counters. The figurines seem a bit fragile - my Mrs Peacock is bent over, almost horizontal out of the box. I would have preferred them to be more robust, but as long as you look after them, they should be ok.The board has been revised, although the rooms are the same, they have look a lot fancier to the version I had twenty years ago which was very plain. Doesn't affect gameplay, and it is still the classic it has always been. The bonus cards are a great addition, but you can also play without them if you want.Overall I highly recommend this updated version of Cluedo to anyone. It hasn't changed that much and is still great fun.

I actually like this game, as I did the original, and I quite like the modernisation of it too. Yes Mrs White has left the building to be replaced by Dr Orchid, but the story is that she supposedly raised Dr Orchid hence the legitimate 'exchange' in characters. Yes the characters are younger, but that doesn't really matter as it's all about the game play. With so many new versions of this game available (Downton Abbey; Harry Potter; Simpsons; Game of Thrones), it is nice to play one that is as close to the original as can be. The rooms and board layout are the same as the original, so too is pretty much everything else (I can only imagine what weapons Harry Potter has). One of the main differences for original fans is that Miss Scarlet no longer starts the game, instead you have a roll a dice, highest player goes first.Whilst the original was perfect during its initial release in 1949, a revamp to bring in a professional female character (a Chinese plant toxicologist) does dramatically move the game into the 21st century and may prove too much for lovers of the original. Gone is the essence of the upstairs/downstairs feeling, instead you are left with a large creepy house filled with suspense (maybe there is something to the Downton Abbey version after all).Overall this is still an excellent game that provides hours of fun and entertainment, it's just lost a little of the grand stateliness that it had before.

As a child I always found this game difficult to understand ... quite what was required was beyond me. Then about twenty years' later I met with a couple of friends who absolutely loved it; I finally got the gist but ... well it was only OK.Moving on several years I have two daughters aged six and nine (and a wife), and they have absolutely LOVED this game. Do note that the recommended minimum age is six. I think that's about right as my youngest wanted to know rather a lot about "what's murder?" It's not too difficult to get around but be aware. The girls really liked the characters and made links with Scooby Doo characters ("Mystery Incorporated") which is a favourite of theirs. The game is easy enough to set out (there's no pencils in my set ... is there supposed to be? ... I really miss them!) and actually the rules are straightforwards (clearly my six-year-old is brighter than I was at nine-ish) and easy to understand. We liked the new (to me) clue feature that speeds the game up, but it does not have to be used. The artwork on the board is really impressive, the quality of the cards, characters and notebooks less so, but with care they're fine?Anything not to like? Well beyond the quality of a couple of items I'd say not really. The note books are a little small for my youngest daughter (so I made some A4 ones using a spreadsheet ... and did I mention pencils?

I have played Cluedo where, as in Father Ted, no cards were put in the envelope, which made for an interesting night. I collect Cluedo (as well as Monoploy and classic board game variants in general) so compared this against the standard Cluedo's of old. Nothing much changed for years in this manor house murder mystery until they started cashing in with themed variants, and I'm not really convinced anything needed to change now, unless this is designed for a generation of people with short attention spans who want to get the game over quickly rather it's secondary use of just getting a family or group of friends around a table for a couple of hours chewing the fat and interacting at a social level. They've changed one of the characters, added some cards and to be honest the overall effect is minimal. It's still a good game to play and still will cause people to sit around the table and interact, I just don't see why they necessarily needed to change it. If you want to play a different version of Cluedo, like with Monopoly, I'd go for one of the variants: like the Sherlock Holmes Edition. If you want to play the classic version buy the classic version. This isn't bad - I would have bought it had I not received a review copy as I do collect board games, but my personal choice is that I just prefer the original.

My original version of the game has long since bitten the dust (well it was bought in the 1970s) and I have been pestering the other half for us to get a new version. Unfortunately neither he or my adult son really like the game so they were reluctant but I made an executive decision and purchased it anyway.Delivery was within 23 hours of placing my order and the game arrived with all pieces intact and no damage. The first thing I noticed was the removal of Mrs White and the modificiations to gameplay. The second thing was that neither my husband or son actually knew how to play it - ah, so it's not that you don't like it it's that you don't get it.When I explained it was a lighter version of 221B Baker Street they were on board.Gameplay took about 40 minutes but 10 of those were probably me explaining again what you did when you entered a room. We didn't use the clue cards and if you rolled the symbol we treated it as a one and played to the traditional rules. Nice to see that the murder weapons were still diecast but I have no idea why the rope is now a lump of plastic instead of a tiny bit of knotted twine - might just have to replace that when I find some string.Good nostalgic game that we did enjoy playing and will play again!

The board game can be set up within minutes, the instructions being just 4 pages, for two players/teams or more. The winner being able to deduce the three key aspects of who committed the murder, in which room and with what weapon. Luck can play a part but largely the ability lies with those who ask effective questions. In comparison to the original version, the board is now pictorial with detail in each room, even though the weapons become camouflaged. This version enables faster games due to reaching the next room quicker by using the total thrown on two dice and the introduction of ‘clue cards’ forces players to reveal clues during their moves.Playing pieces show greater detail than before but suggest they could be out of a Christmas cracker, even the rope is now plastic! The rules do add that the original game can be played without using the ‘clue cards’.The design implies aiming at a younger audience, the relegation of ‘old’ Mrs White and introduction of Dr Orchid. There are biopics of the six characters, all thirty-somethings, the descriptions tempt players to match themselves to the characters. Most enjoyable to play with additions to create quicker games, just what Dr Black, the victim, would want!

I had never played Cluedo before although obviously I knew of the game...so in reviewing this it gave me a chance to play the game I had always fancied playing but never had the opportunity to.I googled to find some images of how an older classic version of the board would have looked and they have certainly brightened it up a bit for a modern player. The character Mrs White has been replaced by Doctor Orchid which is a good thing as although it's a quintessentially British game it's nice to add some international flavour to the game.I played this game with my niece (aged 9) and my nephew (aged 13) the latter being the age he was, was a bit dubious about playing it but enjoyed it more than he thought he would. It made a change from killing things with his x-box lol. Bonus cards have been added to speed the game play up a bit. If you roll the dice and it lands on 1 or rather a magnifying glass, then you have to pick up a card which requests either you or another player do something to help along solving the mystery. The best thing about it all is that it gets families sitting around a table/carpet whatever and talking and interacting with each other as opposed to swiping smart phones.

We have the previous version of Cluedo which contains famous(?) Mrs White. A friend played the game at our place and totally loves it, so we decided to get her a set for Christmas. That is when I realised Hasbro came out with the new 2016 version of the game.I spotted few differences to the previous set:1) In the set I have, everyone start from the middle of the board (unless you get summoned to a room before your term). In the new set, everyone starts from the edge of the mansion.2) The "question mark tiles" are removed from the board. The set now has special dices to determine if players should draw a "special cards"3) Mrs White is replaced by Ms Orchid4) Characters look more lively in the new set.5)Some rooms (i.e. ball room, dining room) have more entrances now, might make them easier to get to.I haven't play the new set myself (it is a gift to someone), but as far as I can tell, it will be as fun as the previous version. Unless you must have a specific version, I will recommend the cheaper one (this is cheaper than the previous version at the time of purchase)

There are a small number of culturally iconic board games that everyone had heard of and most have played at least once in their lifetimes, and Cluedo is in the premier league of such fame. This is a nice set. Jazzed up from the early set that was kept in the cupboard along with Monopoly, Scrabble and Snakes & Ladders. The pieces do not feel as solid and substantial as the ones I remember, but that could well be a false memory, it was a long time ago, and that set is now lost and has now passed into history. Not sure I approve of the change in characters, this is after all, a game that has inspired a thousand, or feels like it, mystery thriller films of that name and copycat novels, and some things and names should surely remain sacred, no matter how interesting or updated they may appear to be.A very good price for a game that will be pulled out of the family cupboard again and again over the decades, and I would argue, a must have in any family home.
