The Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is a superb, versatile, all-round lens. The overall build quality is fantastic, as you would expect from an L-series lens, and is a welcomed upgrade to the Mk. I version of this lens.Stretching from 24mm (Medium-wide) to 70mm (short telephoto), the 24-70 f/2.8 lenses are perhaps best known for their workhorse nature. Having one of these in your bag often means you can leave the heavy collection of prime lenses at home on a normal day's shoot; in fact, that's what I've found myself doing more and more with this lens. I can drop this, my 5D Mk III, and a flash into my bag, and be ready for a lot of situations that present themselves, without needing to worry that my images won't be sharp or slightly distorted at the edges. The fastest aperture of this lens, at f/2.8 isn't the best in the lowest of light situations, however, in normal working circumstances this is more than enough for most day-to-day shooting scenarios. At an average of 2 stops slower than most of the primes that the zoom range cuts across, you would expect backgrounds to be slightly sharper than the prime equivalents, however this lens does an excellent job of blurring the background out for portraits and close-up work, whilst still being pin-sharp when you stop it down to f/8 or above for landscape work.At nearly 1kg, this lens is by far not the lightest zoom Canon makes, however the weight is truly reflected in the stunning images you can capture thanks to the glass inside. This may be slightly buffeted by the fact that Canon chose not to build IS of any kind into the lens, opting for a purely optical design, much like its predecessor.. Unlike it's predecessor, this Mk. II version of the lens features a plastic/thin metal construction. Some people may be put off by this, however, I for one am not careful with my lenses and don't treat them like babies, and after 5 months of hard use, there is no physical or visual wear and tear to my lens. The lens hood supplied with my own lens was of the newer-style button release lens hoods. Unlike the Mk.I version, the hood now directly attaches to a bayonet around the outermost lip of the 82mm filter ring. The barrel no longer travels inside the lens hood. This means that Canon used their normal zoom layout of shortest to longest clockwise, however that added protection from knocks and bumps to the barrel is no longer there.Overall, I think that the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is an excellent and versatile lens, well worthy of its L-series designation and pricing.Pros:Nearly prime-quality sharpnessFast maximum aperture for a zoomProfessional build qualityWeather sealingVersatileCons:Slow maximum aperture for ultra-low light workNo IS

PLEASE NOTE: Amazon has lumped together the reviews of the f4 & f2.8 versions of this lens. This review is for the f2.8 version.I would agree that this lens carries a hefty price tag, but you know the price before you buy. This is a brief review about how the lens actually performs in practice, rather than a review of Canon's pricing policy, so that you have some information to weigh up against whatever price tag you are seeing.I've owned the lens for a couple of weeks and have shot 1 wedding with it so far. I was also considering the Tamron 24 - 70 f2.8 VC and was torn between the 2 lenses. My experience with 3rd party lenses has been that when you get a good copy they can be excellent, but I typically go through 2 or 3 copies before I get a keeper. In the end this was what tipped me towards the Canon option. In opting for the Canon over the Tamron, my main concern was that I'd miss shots that I would have caught with the help of the Tamron's VC. In practice, most of the shots that I'm rejecting for technical reasons are down to movement of the subject, rather than the camera - an even wider aperture may have saved the shot, not VC / IS. At this focal length, image stabilisation for photography is a nice feature, but far from essential. If I wanted the lens for video work I would definitely have gone with the Tamron. This lens had a tough act to follow, as I love my Canon 70 - 200 f2.8 IS II, but apart from the obvious - the lesser bokeh & compression that the shorter focal length offers, in most other respects, the quality of the images produced by these two lenses is very comparable as is the focus speed. The 24 - 70 produces images that stand up well against my primes in terms of sharpness, colour and contrast, and this is high praise indeed. I would agree that any 24 - 70 f2.8 is going to be a bit of a 'jack of all trades' lens (some say boring) as compared to a selection of nice super-fast primes, but if you shoot weddings or similar events, this lens is a Godsend.I only have one niggle - yes, the lens hood now locks into place, but if the release button gets pushed accidentally, you then have a very loose hood that drops off easily. I use a Black Rapid strap, and this places the hood release button so that it is between the camera and my body & the hood gets released easily and falls to the floor. If you use a Black Rapid with the camera hanging to your right, put the lens hood on upside down!

First of all, I just want to make potential customers aware that the supplied Canon Lens Hood used to be the EW-83L, but has now been replaced with the EW-83M - The only difference I can see (apart from the L was made in Japan, and the M is made in Taiwan) is that the inner part of the petal is no longer covered with felt, but just blackened plastic. I don't know if the felt caused any optical problems, but I assume it may have if the felt is no longer used ???The lens has nice build quality and is a lovely thing to hold, with a reassuring feel. However, I'm not totally sure about the consistency of this lens' AF accuracy.I have just returned one copy of the lens and had it replaced with one from a completely different batch (now supplied with the EW-83M Lens Hood, as opposed to the EW-83L). The AF inconsistency seems to be the same, so I am fairly confident I don't have a dodgy copy .. So, in conclusion, occasionally when auto focusing but repeatedly pressing the shutter release while trying to focus on the exact same spot, the focus will, on occasion, vary a little, confirmed by the distance scale showing a different distance and a whir of the AF motor. Any comments would be very welcome.

The mark 1 version of this lens was superb, built to last and a great favourite with professionals and enthusiasts. For those reasons I was doubtful about the need to upgrade. However, this lens has shown itself to be a clear improvement over the previous superb mark 1 lens. The lens has been redesigned and the main result in practice for the user is improved sharpness throughout. The lens is very fast to focus and works well in all lighting circumstances within reason. It is now more water and dust proof. It is built to last. The hood is a short wing design which does not offer the front element (with or without a filter)the protection from rain spots which the much longer hood did with the previous model. This is a disadvantage for photographers that have no choice but to work in wet conditions.I have communicated with Canon about this but as the internal action of the lens has been reversed it is not possible to fit a longer hood.Otherwise I would agree with all the reviews that report the improvements of this lens over the mark 1Superb has now become superb plus!Worth every penny for professionals and enthusiasts.

I'm into landscape photography and wanted to upgrade my kit lens as I wasn't happy with the focusing ring when manual focusing. It's far too loose for my liking , so you can never get anything absolutely pin sharp. I always had to take a "I suppose that'll do" approach to focusing on live view using a tripod. No more! This lens is superb. It's also got longer focal length than the 18-55 kit lens which is a bonus. All the focusing is done internally, so you can put a filter on without having to readjust it every time you change focus on a subject.Focusing is a dream on live view using a tripod, you just dial in the focus on the area you want to focus on.I can now absolutely control the focusing manually on a tripod.Autofocus is great when shooting handheld as it's fast, quiet and provides crisp images.IS is a welcome bonus for the price as the lens I was originally looking at cost an additional £1k for IS built in!The £160 cash back from Canon helped me to justify the purchase with my wife as I would have been over budget without it.This is my go-to lens everytime.

I own a few L lenses. Including the 50mm f1.2, the 70-200 mk2 and also the 85mm f1.2. I can tell you that the 24-70 mk2 is my favourite lens of them all. The weight of the lens is superb for all day shooting. The focal length is excellent for most photo's. The image quality is simply stunning! It is impossible to say just how sharp and colourful the images this lens produces are...they are awesome. The bokeh is delicious. When shooting in aiservo mode the focus is breathtaking and the images are all in focus, sharp and beautiful to look at. All the other L lenses I own are awesome but this one is the most practicable. It is a true workhorse lens.If you are considering getting a prime lens or this mk2 version I would say go for this lens as it delivers prime like quality whilst offering a fantastic focal range. 24mm is awesome for taking photo's of buildings, scenery and the 50mm to 70mm range of the lens is superb for portraits etc. 24mm will also get those all important group shots. BEST CANON LENS in my opinion and I own the best of the Canon glass on the market.

This is a fantastic lens for those investing in their first L series lens. Its versatility in it's zoom range of 24-70mm is really useful. The Image Stabilisation (IS) works brilliantly and image is sharp pretty much across the frame. The macro feature is a brilliant feature. I can take portraits, landscapes and some close up photos all with this one lens. It's not strictly macro but it is very close to it.It's aperture is wide open at F/4 so your not going to get a lot of bokeh or background blur in your photos. But again it was than I was expecting especially on my Canon 6D.It's an EF lens so will work on both the Canon crop sensor and full frame camera bodies. It works a treat on my Canon 550D,my Canon 6D and my friends Canon 700D.With the crop sensor camera's you just have to remember that 24-70mm becomes 38-112mmSo an exceptional quality lens that ticks many boxes. It's a little heavy at first but you soon get used to it.

Put it on camera body and its not been off since! Does take getting used to locking button to stop lens creep but it a smart feature. Also don't forget the button pushes up when you turn the lens to macro setting..two for the price of one really. Took it to local sports club and took photos of game and although its not a telephoto. zoomed in the detail is still excellent and very printable. Over the 24-105mm go for 24-70mm, its slightly shorter, with the IS and macro features its a winner. Also comes with a petal style lens hood, and another good point to note is the centre pinch lens cap, no fiddly fingers needed to get cap off. Also came with a nice little lens bag.Don't forget your lens filter glass to protect the quality glass.Buy it, use it and enjoy!Bye

I have a Canon 6D and was initially using a 28-135 lens for general purpose use. I replaced that with the 24-70 f4L IS and am very happy with that decision. The L lens is shorter, better built, feels nicely balanced with the 6D, produces lovely colourful, sharp images and has a useful macro capability. I don't believe that the difference in price between this lens and the 24-70 f2.8 was justified for my purposes. I took advantage of the Canon Spring Cashback and received a refund of £160 which brought the price paid down to a sensible level!I've added a photo taken during the 2015 Bristol Balloon Fiesta of the night glow. This was handheld and demonstrates the excellent Image Stabilisation, sharpness, and the low light performance of the 6D, of course.

I had the Mk1 version of this lens and always found it to be a little soft. I now own the MKII version and it is sharp, really sharp and as sharp any lens you'll ever use. Add a sharpening filter in post and you have the sharpest photos possible. Some people complain about vignetting with this lens- blah. Others bang on about primes- blah. This 24-70 MKII is the best all round, do everything lens there is on the market- period- there is nothing better. Auto focus is as fast as a snipers bullet, everything works the way it's meant to and it makes taking photos easy.My only gripe is that this lens doesn't have IS (Canon has made a mistake by not adding it) but no doubt there will be a MKIII in the future that does.In short, this really is a great lens.

I do feel that Canon missed a trick by not including stabilisation with this lens, I do think it requires it, had it been included, this lens would be the ultimate wide angle zoom on the market.I have lived with this lens for a couple of months now, and as my knowledge of its shortcomings and its many advantages improves, along with my recent purchase of a 5D mk111, and the way they work together, continues to excite me, and has rekindled my love of photography. This pairing of camera and lens seem to work in perfect harmony - all you require is a polariser and some large capacity data storageand you are away! It could make a photographer of me yet.

The major superiority of Canon over any other brands is that you can own these kind of lenses.Canon 24-70 L f2.8 iiPROS1. Sharpness in every focal length and at any focal length2. Beautiful contrast3. Great colors4. Fast AF5. Great control of flares6. Lighter than it could be for this focal length7. Build like a tankCONS1. It's quite silent when focusing but I expected totally silent focus motor(e.g. My Canon ef-s 18-135 3.5/5.6 STM is totally silent when focusing)P.S. It is very important to use cameras MICROADJUSTMENT so you can get the most out from the lens.

One of the sharpest lenses I've ever used, right into the full frame corners is sharp wide open and improves slightly when stopped down. Very low distortion and chromatic aberration is virtually non-existent. Build quality is excellent, and it's not too heavy even for an f/2.8 lens (it's noticeably lighter than it's predecessor). The absolute best standard lens available for a Canon full frame DSLR. The only thing I wish is that Canon would release an IS version, if they do, and it's of the same quality as this, then that is the only reason I would ever swap this lens.

12.4.2015

I have been eager to purchase this lens for sometime, so as Canon had a cash back offer I took the opportunity. I have a Canon 7D and have been using an EF-S 15-85mm IS USM lens. It has been a good quality lens, but the new EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM is just excellent. I haven't put it through its paces yet, but the images I have taken so far are so pin sharp. The addition of a macro option is so useful for me ,as I do a lot of insect photography. The "L" series lenses are worth the extra cost.

Usual Canon L series Quality Lens, Using with Canon 5D mkIII, Purchased to replace my Trusty 24-105mm which was still working perfectly ,The 24-70mm is just that bit lighter & smaller very fast focus & handy Macro feature,A great all rounder, Grab it while the Canon £150 Cashback in operation unlike some companies Canon pay out Promptly !UPDATE 01/03/2018I have now upgraded to 5D mk4, and have sold this lens and returned to my Fav 24-105mm mk1, just missed that extra reach
