I haven't played a breath of fire game since II on the Wii Virtual Console, or the (Admittedly rather rubbish) quintequel on the PS2, Dragon Quarter. Not that I needed much exposition anyway - I am aware that the only things connecting this series is a blue haired boy called Ryu who can turn into a dragon, a girl with wings called Nina who obviously becomes Ryu's love interest, a slight religious and/or philosophical subtext, and in the case of the first few games, laughably bad translation (Apparently, Breath of Fire was the game which coined Gamespot's bad translation demerit phrase "Heart is Crunchy").Having played the (Really rare) pc version of BoF IV for a while, I have to admit, even on the PC, I'm still impressed. The sprites are rather blurry on the PC, but the combination of 3D backgrounds and 2D sprites is still great to look at, even today. I've also heard some people complain about the PC version having a number of cutscene-freezing glitches, but at time of writing, I haven't come across any. Maybe it's the pc I'm using...Lastly, the biggest problem I have with the PC version is that half the controls are hidden away - special abilities on the overworld, for example, are triggered using not only the V key, but also the Escape key, of all things. I haven't seen the Escape key being used for such an essential task since the PC version of Sonic 3. The biggest problem is that I actually had to look on the internet to find out how to quit the game (Although it's really simple once you do know). However, all of these are fairly minor flaws in an otherwise fantastic game - the combat is fast-paced, and fantastic to look at, especially when Ryu transforms, and the story provides just enough intrigue to keep you ploughing on through the story. Get the PS1 or the PC version, because it honestly doesn't matter which, although it's worth remembering that the PC version is miles more rare (At least in Europe, but more so in America, as it was never released on the PC in America).Overall, highly recommended.(PS, if you're getting the PC version, F9 quits the game. Just so you know.)

Being a massive fan of the breath of fire series, i made it my mission to get all of them, and when i saw this game selling for such a great price i had to have it.The game itself is great, if you like Breath of fire 3 then its more of the same (though a few different abilities thrown in there, and a slightly different art style). It has a cast of quirky characters and cool spells (including a combo system that stacks up spells for massive damage)and switches between Ryu and Fou-lou, who is massively awesome, if not a little bit emo. There are some problems with it though:1. the controls. They seem a bit clunky and difficult, but perhaps this is just me; i'm used to portable gaming, where the directional buttons give seamless 8 directional movement with the least amount of coaxing. It makes it more that slightly annoying when you're trying to chase after someone and you keep getting stuck on walls.2. The PC version is slightly buggy. My copy keeps bugging out in the same place; the crane minigame is therefore impossible to beat because it gives me 0 seconds to complete it, as opposed to a couple minutes. This might just be my own version though.these are the main reasons why i can't give it 5/5 for everything, since i can't complete it, and the controls handle like an elephant on a unicycle.Besides this, its a fun game, though frustrating. Its a good addition to my collection anyway.
