The Waterman Graduate Allure Ballpoint Pen was an interesting item to review. The pen comes in a basic cardboard box; reflecting its price. The body of my pen has a (somewhat matte) black lacquer finish. Mainly its a nice finish as its warm to the touch unlike an anodised metal would be. The finish is very good; its uniform over the pen and doesn't show any blemishes or spots. The contrasts nicely with the bright clip and the centre band. The first time I used it I was surprised to find it uses a push mechanism rather than a twist one. The body does unscrew to let you replace the cartridge. It came with a medium point blue. Its easy to pop them out and put one back in.The pen itself is quite lightweight; and its easy to write with it.The Waterman biro cartridge has a nice friction to slow you down and a fresh cartridge leaves a good constant ink trail. When I write notes in a meeting over using my tablet or keyboard its about the visceral elements the one I find the most satisfying is screwing the cap or the biro element back in on after using it. The click action; whilst quick loses some of that sensation; and personally I think it feels cheaper. In terms of note taking it works just fine; my writing looks good and the thickness works for general note taking. The Graduate Allure is also a bit thin between the fingers to my tastes; its about a centimetre across and I just find a thicker pen results in better writing.Neither of my nieces would have an issue received a Waterman Graduate Allure Ballpoint Pen as a gift. It feels special writing with it over a standard biro. If you need a small pen to slip in a travel wallet or a handbag (don't get the black one so you can find it) it will work just fine.

My love for a nice pen was actually sparked off by Waterman decades ago when I won a fountain pen and pencil set in a raffle as a young teenager. I used that set all the time at school and all these years later I still have it in its original box. So I was delighted to be offered a new Waterman's ballpoint pen to test. The pen is slim and sleek and feels nice in the hand. You push the top down to expose the point to write with, I thought it was a twist at first but it isn't, you then click it down again to make it retract. The ink is blue, which is not so easy to find as black seems to be more popular, so I like that this is different to the norm; of course, when it needs a refill you can choose what colour you want if you want a change. It writes smoothly and doesn't drag on the paper, it would be easier on the hand if you have a lot of writing to do, I would say for exams but you need black ink for exams. It comes in a nice box which would make it a perfect gift for someone, like me, who likes a nice pen or for someone who does a lot of writing. I've included a photograph of the new one alongside my old one so that you can see how robust this make of pen is, you are buying a quality pen that if you take good care of will last a life-time.

This review is for the Waterman ballpoint. I was delighted to be offered this pen to try. I’m a bit of a pen nut and have far more pens than I care to count. I prefer fountain pens, but use a ballpoint for day to day stuff. I have a couple of vintage Waterman ballpoints. One is over 30 years old and still looks like new even though I use it regularly. This pen is beautifully presented in an elegant gift box, so it would make a wonderful present. It’s very plain in design; and that’s what makes it look and feel like a classic. With a metal barrel, there’s a little weight to the body of the pen, but it’s well balanced. The clip is silver coloured metal, looks strong and again has clean lines that complement the overall look of the pen. It’s simple but looks and feels like the quality it is. I’m pleased to note that the pens under this brand are still manufactured in France. It looks like their standards are being maintained and this pen will last a lifetime. I think it’s excellent value. As for writing, the ink flow to the ballpoint is smooth and continuous. No blobs and no break in ink whilst writing. It’s a pen to treasure and I love it.

Sometimes with an inexpensive pen, you do not get the inflow you need, for example when first putting the pen to the paper. There is no such problem with this pen. It writes instantly on contact with the paper even after being carried in your pocket for a day. What I rather dislike is that the pen has the instant quick writing capability of a dry ink pen, and so it does not shape your writing in quite the same way as a more expensive pen might. Having said that, I vastly prefer this pen to a dry ink pen and will use it for every day use without hesitation. Incidentally, it is a cartridge pen, so will not refill in a classic fountain pen sort of way because it has no ink sack. But lots of us prefer both systems- I do, I mean its easy to carry a spare cartridge around than a jar of ink!- and have pens that cater for both systems. This pen is slimline and very light, the barrel fits securely to the nib holder and so really suitable for a woman to use.It is also quite elegant. The nib itself is stainless steel, so quite strong and likely to last a long time.

In an era of word processing and e-mail, the art of writing is being lost and, when we do write, it’s frequently with cheap, badly designed ball pens, often picked up free of charge and thrown away when the ink runs out.Open the box to reveal the slim matt black body, trimmed with a silver coloured clip and band, and you have to be impressed. Also included is one long ink cartridge. The pen, which has a medium width nib. is pleasantly weighted and sits well balanced in the hand.Well-presented writing should not just be for the benefit of the recipient, it should be a source of pleasure and satisfaction to the writer. Although some talented people can write beautifully with almost anything, for most of us a well-designed, good quality, writing implement is of great benefit. Although not of the very highest quality, the Graduate Allure Fountain Pen is undoubtedly extremely good value for the modest priceThis pen is presented in an attractive gift box which, if purchased as a present would surely impress the recipient.

This pen is, it must be said, very impressive. It's a simply exquisite ballpoint pen in any degree. To begin with, it's packaged beautifully, in a luscious blue Waterman box, and therein a foam backing. The pen is slim, which makes it really nice and comfortable to hold in the hand; this piece is truly ergonomic. The mechanism to extend the pen nib is by clicking down on the top - which feels far nicer than sliding the top half from side to side. The pen glides over any kind of paper or surface easily, and the ink doesn't jam or bunch up. It's graceful, feeling even sophisticated just to write with it, and looks very sleek. The only downside is the price, and the reason for awarding it 4 out of 5 stars. It's been crafted very nicely, true, and feels a bespoke piece. But is it worth £20? I don't quite believe so.Nevertheless, a fantastic pen that I use on a day-to-day basis. Do recommend if you're in the market for a nice pen, but don't care largely about the pricetag.

I used to use a fountain pen a lot, many years ago, for more formal documents before the steady slide into the evil of ballpoints (all that plastic, its evil now you know, disposable plastic, up there with kicking horses and writing rude words on steamed up bus windows). I thought Id try one out, see if I still enjoyed using them and lo and behold I did, something about the way the ink flows and the resulting look of your writing, even the shape of the letters that gives fountain pen writing a distinct and classy look, great for signatures, and a lovely scratchy noise...mmmm.This pen ticked all the boxes, great ink flow, well balanced shaft (stop giggling), no slippage, no leaks and it looks very nice, good quality pen I will use for more important letters, maybe the umpteen I write to Cliff Richard each year asking when he intends to retire. I might buy a quill next, never tried one of them, might improve my hobby of Elizabethan historical drama writing,

This pen is suitable as celebratory gift but it is functional rather than glamorous. It shape should be suitable for personalisation. It would be preferable if the box had a lift of top rather than a slider. I am pleased that Watermans have not used any plastic wrapping. The pen has a simple cylindrical shape which makes it look quite plain. It also lack the length of more expensive pens, so is less suitable for large hands. The surface of the pen does have a good feel to it. The clip is strong and durable. It is the inner workings the pen that makes it worthwhile. The pen is light to unscrew and gently tightens securely. The supplied long blue cartridge is easy to load. Ink flows smoothly from the nib, with no mess. Appreciably better than a budget fountain pen.Whilst I am not wowed by this particular pen, I do recommend introducing young people to the high quality of the Waterman range at an early opportunity.

This is a ballpoint pen. It's a lovely pen and I use mine constantly. It's not as smooth as a rollerball, but you don't have to worry about ink smudge. I use both. I use my ballpoint for writing notes for courses and my journal and for any longer writing that requires speed, whilst I use my rollerball for occasional notes and reminders etc. that are less likely to smudge. Personally, I love this pen. It is beautiful, comfortable, well made, and writes well. As long as you are aware that it is a ballpoint and will not write/flow in the same manner as a rollerball or gel pen, I can't see anyone not loving this pen. It is also one of the prettiest that I own. It is really classy looking.I think my only grumble would be that it comes with blue ink initially and you don't have the option to order with black ink. If you want black, you have to buy extra refills in black and swap the inks over.

up until now I've been a Parker Vector user as I didn't want to spend money on a writing style I may not like, a few month in and still not wanting to spend silly money I opted for the Waterman Allure as an introduction to a little quality and it doesn't disappoint! I didn't appreciate how scratchy my budget pen was until the Waterman arrived and it has a nice weight to it to suggest a pen far more valuable than it is. I've opted for the matt black and only time will tell how scratch resistant the paint work is, but the black and silver details again suggest a pen twice it's value. The supplied waterman ink is a richer colour than what I've previously used and flows nicely with the Allure's 'f'nib, revers writing is a nice fine line, while normal writing leans more on the medium side but a real pleasure to use. I may have just become a Waterman fanboy!

I love to write with a fountain pen having always used one at school, many years ago!! This is a nice pen, and comes in an attractive box, so is ideal to give for a gift. I have had fountain pens before which were made by a well known pen brand, and found there pens to feel much more heavier than this one. I'm still undecided whether that is a good thing or bad, as the heavier pen had more of a quality feel, but this pen is much easier to hold and write with as it is lighter. The pen does write lovely and the nib flows across the page without any scratching. It uses the larger ink cartridges, but does only come with one, which is a shame as it does mean you will need to buy new cartridges straight away.At less than £20, this is a good value pen, but I would have liked at least another one cartridge as well!

EDIT: the ink was Diamine Imperial Blue :)Excellent smooth writing experience, even when writing upside-down it delivers a non scratchy EF stroke similar to a Pilot 78G+. So far the only other pen I tried that you can write upside down is Sailor Lecoule. When writing normally it is a medium wet nib which gives you a nice little feedback. Although it says M nib in product listing, the pen I received has F engraved at the bottom of the nib. Anyway it's slightly thicker than a Lamy Safari F, Sailor Lecoule MF, and Pilot Urban Retro pop M nib.For the price it is a pen worth getting, and I am using a Jinhao universal ink converter with no problem at the moment.

I really enjoy writing with fountain pens. I have a collection of Vintage ones and a couple of contemporary ones too. This type of pen uses ink cartridges. Less messy than refilling from an ink bottle. The pen has a smooth writing nib that really does flow over the paper as you write. The nib is a Fine size. One that I prefer to write with. It is a steel nib and the size is clearly marked on it.It looks good too. Black with silver chrome band and clip.A good pen for anyone beginning ro write with a fountain pen.Easy to use and not at all messyWill make a fine Gift and does come packed in a gift box. Or buy it for yourself as an everyday pen.

Waterman Allure Fountain Pen | Red Lacquer | Fine Nib | Blue Ink | Gift BoxIf you are looking for an inexpensive fountain pen then this is ideal. Writes smoothly on the page, nib glides does not dig into the paper. Stylish looking, light weight. I have several colour versions which I use with corresponding ink colours eg. Black barrel colour with black ink therefore I know which colour ink will write but you can obviously use which ever colour ink in the pen. The converter is simple to fill and also works well with either the converter or ink cartridge fitted. Ink flow is continuous steady flow to nib.
