I have had the Swiss Champ for decades but to be honest it is too big and heavy to put in your trouser pocket or hang on a belt. This little beauty has all of the tools I use the most but is smaller (narrower)and lighter and as such won't start pulling your trousers down as a result. I now believe this to be the best knife not only in the Swiss Army range but of any comparable manufacturer.Take it on a picnic and the small and large knives are perfect for peeling and slicing and you can open a bottle of plonk or a bottle of beer thanks to the corkscrew and cap lifter. For on the spot maintenance jobs there is a large and a small flat-head screwdriver together with a cross-head one too - thesewill cover most situations and I've used them for situations above what they were probably designed for and they are still perfect. I can't tell you how many times those scissors have come in handy, and the reamer is always being used as a bradle. Admittedly I don't recall using the hook though. In the recess for the corkscrew you will find a tiny hole for adding a pin - together with the supplied tweezers and magnifying glass you'll be able to remove all splinters. Don't forget to buy the tiny screwdriver that inserts into the corkscrew (about £3.00) and then together with the magnifying glass you can make on the spot repairs to your glasses. Really what more do you need?My Swiss champ has proved far more durable than my Leatherman so I expect the Explorer to fair the same, indeed I found a Swiss army knife on a beach once, it was smashed and completely jammed with stones and grit - I freed it up and the blades were still sharp and not a hint of rust was evident, if only other makes were as durable! Buy one and you will be using it more than you would have imagined - this is one purchase you won't regret.

Once a boy scout always a boy scout.....had one of these when I was young and lost it on a camp. Ended "upgrading" to a Leatherman Charge TTi, which is probably the lightest from the full size multitools but over the years it began to feel too bulky and heavy (232g) for everyday carry. Decided to get this Explorer, didn't need to read much on the quality and guarantee on these knives as I was very accustomed to them. Did take me awhile to choose which one would be best and by far this was the best bet. For its size (4 layer, 91mm), weight (105 g) and functionality, I think its one of the best everyday carry knives in the Victorinox range.Yes its missing a saw but in the urban jungle I think the trade off with the magnifying glass is a much better option, both functionally and reduces weight. Also I have a saw on my Leatherman if I'm going camping but to date I think Ive used the magnifying glass much more in the last few weeks compared to the saw on the Leatherman that I've had for 5years. One more important thing, this is one of the few swiss army knives that have a phillips driver at the top of the handle rather than mid way on the back, makes huge difference in the functionality of the screwdriver.Ive also purchased the mini screwdriver (£3) that inserts into the corkscrew and theres a small hole to store a straight pin near the corkscrew hinge so now its closer to the explorer plus (which i can't seem to get here in the UK) with the exception of the ballpoint pen.All in all, its a great knife, razor sharp, easily pocketable and doesn't weigh you down like other knives with more functions (most of which you don't use). Best ever.

The explorer is a perfect blend of functionality and size. I have a few Swiss knives but this is the knife I carry with me all the time. I lost this knife's predecessor and had to replace it.There are 2 flat screwdrivers: one doubles as a tin opener and the other a crown cap opener (very useful!). The larger screwdriver has a wire stiper so you have all you need to wire a plug in this knife. The Phillips head screwdriver is the main reason I bought this knife. It is a good sized head. The magnifying glass is useful too. The focal length is such that you can use it for starting fires - when we have sun.The toothpick is good but not for sharing. The tweezers is a little fiddly but it has its uses.I store my knife in a pouch so the key-ring is not used much by me.The blades and scissors are legendary and I use them a lot. The large blade is good for food preparation - I usually clean the blade under boiling water for hygiene.I have two improvement for Victorinox (and you if you want to spend extra money). Buy the mini screwdriver for glasses etc. It slots into the corkscrew. If you replace the handles with handles from the "Champ" you can have all the benefits of the explorer's size but adding a pen and a pin to you knife. The pen is very useful. The pin - occasionally. The build quality is super - as you would expect from Victorinox.I own a Champ, a CyberTool, a Traveller lite... but the Explorer with the modified handles is the knife I carry. The knife is genuinely pocket sized and is highly recommended.

Recently, my wife purchased for me a birthday present of a Victorinox Swiss Army knife from Amazon. My old "Swiss Army Knife" had been taken from me when I forgot to transfer it into my "Hold Luggage", whilst checking in for a flight from Glasgow to Exeter. I was very sad to lose it as I had had that knife for more years than I care to remember and I kept putting my hand into my pocket for itonly to realise it was no longer there.Indeed it had been my companion and helper through all sorts of situations. I had 'lost' it more than once;(once in my allotment more than 20 years ago, yet when I found it after several weeks out in all weathers, it was, after a clean up and oil, as good as ever!)I indeed had had it so long that the Swiss emblem in white on the red background was completely worn away, yet as long as I kept the blade sharpened it always came up 'trumps'. And the tools on it had many times proved very useful, especially the corkscrew and bottle opener!I'm pleased to say that this new knife - the Explorer - is as good as the old knife with amazingly sharp blades and in addition to all the tools on the 'old one', also has a very handy magnifying glass, which in spite of being only 17mm diameter is extremely effective. And as the eyesight of this 76 year old is not as good as it was years ago, its very useful!WELL DONE VICTORINOX! And thanks Amazon for your usual swift service.

This is the one to get! Some knives are just too small but any more "blades" than on this one and it would be too cumbersome or you may as well get one of those Leatherman jobbies which simply aren't practical to carry everywhere. This one is still pocket sized and mine has had loads of use - the big knife blade is ideal for food purposes (cutting fruit and the like at work), the small knife blade is the best for general cutting- the smaller blade giving a bit more control and power (think of a Stanley knife - big handle/small blade)Another good reason for getting this knife is that it has both flat and Philips screwdrivers - in fact it was the Philips screwdriver that sold it to me!it's had so many uses over the years. Also, you'd be suprised at how often the magnifying glass has come in handy for removing splinters. The other blades will have their uses, even if you dont indulge in a lot of reaming or punch eye hooking!Okay, mine is 12 years old now and I didnt buy it from Amazon but I feel it's an item worthy of a very high recommendation. If I ever lose it, I'd get another one.

One day Victorinox will allow you to custom order your own knife, but until that time arrives, the Explorer will suffice. I'd owned a Champ for over 20 years, but in an attempt to reduce the weight of junk I carry around with me, I wanted a smaller model. Beyond the basic tools, I wanted it to have the scissors, a Phillips head screwdriver and a magnifying glass (until you carry one around, you don't appreciate how often it gets used). The Explorer is the only model that fitted the bill.It is a splendid everyday carry item, and Victorinox build quality is unrivalled. Give it a bit of an oil and a clean each year, run a sharpening stone over the blades if you feel them a bit dull and you'll be passing this to the next generation - unless like me you'll be taking it to the grave, because you never know when it'll be needed....Oh, and if I were to custom order a knife, what would I change? I'd replace the hook thing with the small chisel and then perfection would be attained.Buy one today, at this price you can't go wrong.

having a tonne of swiss army knives (some people like watches I like these!) I bought one on a whim when it was £22 delivered and couldn't resist! this is somewhere close to a swisschamp without the metal file, saw, pliers and that ridiculous fish scaler they insist on putting on the more expensive models, this one is bang on for most uk EDC applications and the scissors are a real knockout in terms of sharpness and accuracy when cutting even fine materials (leatherman take note!). I also really like the phillips driver that comes out 180 degrees to the tool unlike some of the cheaper ones which stop at 90 degrees (personal preference). if you get a good deal on one then buy buy buy!failing that the swiss champ is the most empowering piece of engineering you can shove onto your belt besides the excellent swiss tool (love mine by the way even if it is heavy and not uk legal due to its locking blades :(

This is one of the Victorinox models I consider to be optimal for urban use. It has two knives for everyday cutting purposes that one might need to do. The scissors are really good too for everyday urban use.Other functions such as a dedicated screwdriver might come handy from time to time. The bottle and wine opener can be good if you like to drink. The can opener might come in handy, but I think it's more for people that like to do some camping. Never used the reamer and hook, but I do use the magnifier as well from time to time. This is a very good model for urban use, it can be a little bulky if your work requires you to dress in suits. In that case I think the Climber or other Alox models, such as Alox Cadet or Pioneer might be better for you. There are also the classic range in both regular and Alox finishes, but I think they are too small to be useful :)

I have entitled this review "Lifelong Friend" but that's if you can manage to keep one for that long. I have had several over the years and have managed to lose a number through life's adventures. All Victorinox knives are superb quality and if you're in London (and probably other places too) you can pop into their store in New Bond Street for a free overhaul and "scale" replacement (that's the coloured plastic bit) in a small selection of funky different clear and solid colours. Accept no substitute, buy the best. Do remember, however, not to try to take your "friend" through security control at the airport. As an engineer, general practical guy and carrier of Swiss Army Knives for more than 25 years,I've never considered mine a weapon but I can see how it might be seen differently by some.

I have had several "cheaper" multi-knives in the past and recently treated myself to two different types of Victorinox Swiss Army Knives - the difference is huge. The Victorinox knives are at least ten times better quality than the imitations. The metal is high-quality stainless steel and all of the hinges are very strong. The tweezers and toothpick "click" into place so they will not drop out accidentally. The tools you get are shown in the photo at the top of the page. There are a lot of different types of Victorinox knives, each with different combinations of tools, so make sure you buy one that has the tools you need on it.The keyring attachment is a good idea - I keep mine on a belt chain so that it doesn't get lost /stolen / eaten.

Ordered the product knowing that this is an Explorer version (as shown in the image & product description) not climber (as written in headline).Amazing product quality as expected from the brand. I think it can last for ages if in the right hands. The body is shiny red and you always want to keep it in hand. All tools are brand new and live upto Victorinox fame. The only issue I faced is that the tools are slightly tight to pull out and you have to be careful. However, on reading the leaflet in the product box, they say that it is expected and one needs to immerse the product in hot water and oil it if needed.Amazon doesn't stop to amaze you and the seller did a good job in living up to theexpectations.Overall a very good purchase.

Got this to replace a less well equiped Swiss army knife inadvertently left in my shoulder bag when flying Heathrow to Belfast. (as an aside Heathrow did not appear to have a problem with a penknife if under 4" but Belfast international confiscated it on the return flight and seemed surprised Heathrow let it past). A penknife is not a thing I often use, but I do miss one when its not there. This model is equiped with all manner of useful gadgets (and also some which appear pointless unless you're gutting a whale or sewing a leg back on)so has been used far more than my original. Overall an excellant buy and a great price. Delivery as ever within a few days of order.Recommended, just don't leave it in your bag when flying.

The blades have a nice sharpness to them that lasts which is nice, i don't use the larger blade as often but i was pleasantly surprised to find that after everything i used the smaller blade on it was still sharp! Not sharp enough that i will cut my finger the moment it's placed on my index for example, then again i only need to apply a little sideways pressure and i'm in trouble haha. The magnifying glass has come in handy for a splinter or two and it helps with any text too small for me to read without squinting and moving my face in close and the tweezers have also come in handy, same with the various screwdrivers.Overall it's a decent bit of kit, well worth the money for the usefulness and quality.

This is my first Swiss army knife and i'm very pleased indeed with my purchase. Having done a bit of research on the tools available I chose this one because it's full sized but still compact and due to the magnifying glass. As an expedition medic I suspect I will find this particularly invaluable for splinters and examining injuries in the field. The knife blades and scissors are excellent, so sharp and strong and I've already used the screw drivers, bottle opener and cork screw many times. Couldn't ask for a better model and I must say I love the classic design. The whole knife has such a feeling of quality i'm amazed the price is so reasonable. Thoroughly recommended!

I bought this after buying my leatherman surge multi tool. The leatherman is probably a more capable multi tool, but the Victorinox still gets taken with me 9/10 instead because it's smaller and also conforms to UK knife laws. The knives are sharp, the tool feels very well made. Even though none of the tools lock in place, the design of it means the tools hold in place really when pulled out all the way, which i like a lot.Two blades is great, especially for opening packages where you may not want a big blade that would risk damaging the goods.Would buy again in a heartbeat if lost or stolen.
